Does anyone know if there is an online transcription of Resurrection Cemetery? I am looking for John Conklin 1798-1887. He is listed on www.findagrave.com as being buried there, but a nice lady who volunteered to take a photo of his headstone for me says that the cemetery does not have a record of him. Can anyone help me?

I'm looking for a sexton or somebody who has knowledge of the section locations at Prairie Mound Cemetery, Oregon. The Sons of Union Veterans of the Civil War burial database indicates that LaFayette Munsell is buried in "Section I, Lot 36".
http://www.suvcwdb.org/home/records.php?action=view&id=2...

I visited but was unable to locate the stone. However, there were quite a few older stones that were damaged and/or unreadable in the area I believe were he might've been interred.

LaFayette Munsell (aka La Fayette Munsell) was my 3rd-G Grand Uncle. He was directly involved with "Old Abe", the war eagle, according to his obituary.
http://www.lohr-genealogy.com/getperson.php?personID=I1521&a...

www.Lohr-Genealogy.com

Baker Bike Shop

Wisconsin State Journal (Madison, Wisconsin)
February 20, 1944

Before Autos, City Was "Bike Crazy," Used Wheels for Business, Pleasure

Left to right: James Baker, Dexter Baker, Jay Baker, William "Pickeral Billy" Dunn. In the doorway: Paul Fish, Fred R. Cummings, assistant city auditor, was employed at the Baker shop but was out at the time the picture was taken.

Before Autos, City Was bicycle "Crazy."

Bike establishments did a rush business as hundreds of adults and children rode wheels. Not only were the bicycles used to ride to and from work but they served as transportation for pleasure trips, especially during the weekend.

The above picture taken about 45 years ago [1899], shows one of the bike shops which was housed in a landmark that stood on the site of the federal building grounds facing S. Pinckney st. It was operated by Baker Bros. who, like the other bike shops, did a landoffice business.

At one time the Bakers manufactured bicycles but in later years they devoted their entire time to selling several makes and also to repair wheels. To the left in the picture stands James Baker, father of the Baker boys. Next ot him stand his sons Dexter and Jay, and the end man is the late, Wiliam Dunn, better known in those days as "Pickeral Billy," one of the city's first mail carriers.

Cummings Worked There
Fred R. Cummings, now assistant city auditor, was employed in the Baker bike shop during summer months. At the time the picture was taken he was out of the shop.

Paul Fish stood in the doorway, just behind Dexter.

At the corner of S. Pinckney and E. Doty sts. stood the brick building which housed the furniture store of James Fisher. After the Fishers had vacated the building, the Haney Buggy Co. established its business in the place. Next door stood the two-story structure which was the home of the Baker bike shop.

After the death of Mr. Fisher, his widow lived over the bicycle shop for a number of years.

Adjacent to the Bakers were two blacksmith shops. In the pioneer days of Madison Zachary Ramsdale operated one of the shops.

Donovan Had One
Before he studied law the late Judge Anthony Donovan of the municipal court also ran one of the shops. Judge Donovan studied his law books every opportunity he had during working hours. Soon after he had begun the practice of law, he was elected judge of the municipal, now superior court.

Named For Grandfather
Dexter Baker was given his first name in honor of his grandfather, Dexter Curtis, one of the city's early manufacturers whose old home, now owned by C. A. Field, opposite St. Patrick's church on E. Main st., still stands. Mrs. James Baker was a daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Curtis. An Uncle of Dexter Baker, Wiliam D. Curtis, who served Madison as Mayor continued to operator the Dexter Curtis Co. after he died. The company also had a branch shop in England and and office in Paris.

It appears that "Pickeral Billy" Dunn had just called for his bicycle at the shop when the photographer came along. Dunn acquired the nickname of "Pickeral Billy" because he always knew where to catch pickerel in Lake Mendota.

Showed President How
When Pres. Grover Cleveland visited Madison in 1886 Billy took him on a fishing expedition on Mendota and showed him how to catch pickerel. The president and his wife were guests of Col. and Mrs. William F. Vilas at the Vilas home on E. Gilman st. The city was beautifully decorated in honor of the presidential party. On each corner of Capital Square was built an arch. As the presidential party drove through under the arches, school children, standing on top dropped flowers on Mr. and Mrs. Cleveland.

The Maennerchor went to the Vilas home one night and serenaded Cleveland and his wife. Cleveland appeared on the front porch express his appreciation and told the singers that he was an associate member of the Buffalo, N.Y. Liederkranz.

Col. Vilas also added that at one time he had been an associate member of the Maennerchor. Col. Vilas was postmaster general during one term of Cleveland's administration and a United States senator during the term.

Forecast Weather, Too
"Pickerel Billy" was one of the proudest men in the city after his successful fishing trip with the president. After his retirement from the mail service Billy was appointed bailiff of the United States court. Not only was Billy and expert fisherman but he also was a pretty good weather forecaster. he usually watched for the prevailing winds at each season's change and then forecast what the weather would be for the next three months.

Baker Bros. opened up their first bike shop in the basement of the old Brown block, the present site of the First National bank. When the business required use of larger quarters they moved to the S. Pinckney st. store. Before going in to business for themselves the brothers were employed in the Warner bike shop, in the building now being used for storage by Wolff, Kubly and Hirsig, E. Main and S. Butler sts.

Bike Races Held

When bicycle riding was the craze in Madison bike races used to be held with Sun Prairie as the starting point and Wisconsin ave. and E. Johnson st. the finishing spot. Hundreds of people used to gather on Wisconsin ave. to watch the finish and cheer the winners.

There were many bike shops in Madison when the Bakers were in business. Among others besides the Bakers running shops were Ben W. Park and his father, W. J. Park; Harry Hull, and Louis F. Schoelkopf. Then the auto first came into being Schoelkpopf took over the Ford agency. Many Madisonians who used to enjoy themselves on bikes, acquired motor cars and for a number of years the bike business was not so flourishing as in the old days.

But They're Back
Since gasoline rationing went into effect the bicycles came into their own again.

Traffic Capt. H. J. Morris said that during the first year of bicycle licensing, 7,000 wheels were registered with his department. So far this year only 6,060 licenses have been issued.

"I think we will have about 800 less licenses this year than last," said Morris. "Last year we also licensed the bicycles owned by Blooming Grove residents. This year the township issues its own licenses."

Many workers now use bikes to travel to and from their places of work, because of gas rationing and over crowding of buses during certain periods of the day.
Ella or Ellen French?

I am looking to find if there are any descendants of a Ella French or Ellen French. In the obit for her father Nelson Ferguson, it lists her as living in Madison, Wisconsin in June of 1909. It is thought she was born abt. 1857 in either Waushara or Adams County Wisconsin to Nelson and Christina (Morse) Ferguson. She was the oldest of their six children together. According to her father's obit I learned that she had married into the French family and was living in Madison. I have no information if she had children and descendants living today. I am a descendant of her brother Lester. Their mother died about 1871 and not much has passed down to Lester's descendants on their mother Christina. He was only six so probably could not remember much. As the oldest daughter and 14 I am hoping that some oral traditions might have passed down in her descendants if she had any. Or a photograph of what she looked like. I have a a couple pictures of Nelson and one group photo of all the children in 1892. I hope there is someone out there who I can come in contact that is one of her descendants.

Thanks,
Thomas Clayton Ferguson III

He and Teresa moved back to Wisconsin, to Dane County, and then I lose track of Owen. I need his death date. I have Teresa's death date as 1976, but I believe he died long before here.
WI Vital Records Fee Increase

Good morning,
I recently traveled to several county courthouses in Wisconsin from out of state and was shocked at the recent fee increase in vital records copying. For those who don't know, the fee for a certified or uncertified photocopy of a vital record (birth, death, marriage) has risen to $20 in WI.

Yes, viewing these records is still free but I guess I like having copies of the record itself.

I understand that there should be a fee when a certified copy is requested by mail since it takes a certain amount of time and effort for a county employee to locate, copy, certify and mail this document off.

But I took time off from work to personally visit 3 different courthouses in the state on a weekday. I was willing to do the copying myself and even pay a small fee to do so but $20 when it took absolutely no time from a county employee seems steep. I was also willing to scan it myself with my own equipment, thereby not using any county resources whatsoever but of course this is against the rules . The $20 fee struck me as outrageous. These are public records and I was not looking for certified copies.

Do others feel the same way? Who should I write in the WI state government concerning this issue?

I apologize if this is the wrong place to bring this up. If so please direct me to where it should go.

Sister of my grandma gave birth to a daughter out of wedlock late 1930's early 1940's, and gave her up for adoption according to family lore. I found in the birth index this date written in, and then blacked out, and the birth record is not found in the general files. Makes me suspect the girl was adopted, and believe she could be the daughter of my grandma's sister. Most of the family of that generation is deceased, but as the family genealogist, I would like to solve this mystery. Let me know if you recognize this info.THANKS!!

Photo Request - Calvary Lutheran Chapel, UW Madison Campus

I have a somewhat unusual request...my parents 40th wedding anniversary is this month and I am working on a photographic retrospective of their life together. They were married at Calvary Lutheran Chapel on the UW Madison campus. It is my understanding that the chapel building presently in use is not the same building that was there in 1968 when they married. Is this true? I am in search of photos of that building and, in a perfect world, photos of the interior, particularly the sanctuary/altar. I have tried contacting the church office but that , unfortunately, has not been successful. Can anyone please refer me to an alternate source? I have until mid-September to get this project done, but you all know how hard it can be to chase down some of the more elusive elements of our genealogy, even if they are only 40 yrs old!

Your help is greatly appreciated!

Lynn in NYC

Milo Campbell was the son of harvey Campbell of Dane County.
I could track them in the census until 1880. In 1880 I could only find a Joseph Campbell in Dakota Territory.

Hello,

I am trying to find information on a Norwegian family that settled in Blue Mounds, Wisconsin sometime in the mid 1800's, or so. Their family name was Torhaug/Thorhaug. They lived in Blue Mounds for quite some time, but at least part of the family moved in March or April 1902 to Sheridan County, North Dakota. Some years later they moved again to Prince Albert, Saskatchewan, Canada and settled land there. Some of the family member's names were Otto O. Thorhaug, Sarah Thorhaug, Ole N. Thorhaug, Andrew Thorhaug, Alma Thorhaug, Horace Thorhaug, and at least three other members, if not more. Any help would be sincerely appreciated. Thanks.

Unusual Lookup request

I'm asking for assistance with a look up.

The request is unusual in that the name is not associated with Dane County, WI.
I have found that a copy of a book with information on my ancestors is in the State Historical Society library, 816 State St. Madison, WI 53706. It is only 1 of three copies I've found to exist. The others are the Library of Congress collection & Library of Virginia. My being on the west coast this make all three very inaccessible to me & help in doing a look up would be appreciated

The book is "Eppes, Epps, Epes genealogy & history & related families" by Allison Finney Epps. Library Call #: CS71 E623 1974.

I'm seeking the details of the deaths of James John Finney and his wife Flora Ann Wood.
James died in Mexico and I'd like to get the specifics. Flora died the same year as James in Mason, Mason County, Texas.

Some information on this couple, although I now to be with major errors is at: http://members.dslextreme.com/users/ecrtree/ed%20group%20she...

I am unable to provide the exact page numbers, but the book is indexed and with a small investment in time the data should be findable.

So anyone in Dane county looking for an unusual lookup opportunity please contact me. I’ll provide all possible background to assist.

Thanks if advance for reading the post and even considering the request.
Ed at treefolk@dslextreme.com

Rouse Family of Dane Co., WI bet. 1845-1900

Sorry this message is a bit long but I am looking for any information that will help me break through a brick wall on my Rouse family. I am looking for ANY Rouses that were in Dane County, between 1845-1900). I am trying to find siblings of:

My 4th great-grandfather Paschal Peola Rouse (Also known from censuses as Pascal, Paschal P. and P. P. Rouse) b: abt. 1828 in Amherst, NY D: June 1, 1894 in Winona, Minnesota. Buried in Richland Center Cemetery, Richland Center, WI.

Paschal, according to census records was in Madison in 1850 & 1855, then Mazomanie in 1860 & 1870. In 1878 he was in Richland Center, Richland Co., WI when his wife Helen died and was still there in 1880. In the 1890 Veteran's census he is living in Winona, Minnesota and was there in 1894 when he died.

Paschal's first marriage in 1853 to Helen Hayes does not list his parents. According to his 2nd marriage to Frances was born in Amherst, NY to Gilbert and Emma Rouse. I haven't nailed a yeardate for his birth as we believe it was anywhere from 1819-1828 (We believe closer to 1828 as census' have pointed to this as far as his age goes). Between 1840 and 1850 Paschal moved to Dane Co., WI from NY.

Emily A. (Rouse) Foote. Emily is listed as "daughter of
Gilbert Rouse, of Williamsville, N. Y." in a biography on her husband William H. Foote; they had a daughter named Emma M. Emily & William were married in Dane County in 1848. They lived in Madison, Dane Co., WI in the 1850 census before moving on to Iowa.

There may be another sibling named Henry F. Rouse (B: Abt. 1825 in NY), who lived in both Mazomanie and Madison at around the same times that Paschal did. I also have Paschal & Henry F. Rouse as having served in the same two companies during the Civil War:
Paschal enlisted in the Union Army in November 22, 1861 as a Private in Company M of the 3rd Wisconsin Calvary then on September 20, 1864 he enlisted in the Union Army as a 1st Sergent in Company G of the 1st Wisconsin Heavy Artillery.
Henry F. Rouse enlisted in the Union Army in October 12, 1861 as a Captain in Company M of the 3rd Wisconsin Calvary then on October 25, 1864 he enlisted in the Union Army as a Captain in Company G of the 1st Wisconsin Heavy Artillery.
I have Paschal's Civil War Pension Records but it does not state anything about his family, Henry is mentioned in his records once, but they are hard to read and I cannot tell if a relationship is given. I have yet to get Henry's pension records.

In Henry's household in the 1850 census (Madison, WI) is a William Rouse (B: Abt. 1822 in NY) along with an Emily and Mary McInster all living with him. William is most likely a brother to Henry.

In the 1855 Wisconsin State Census there are 5 Rouses living in Dane County, WI. They are:
C. M. Rouse
Casper Rouse
Henry F. Rouse (This is the Henry mentioned above)
Pascall Rouse (This is my Paschal)
Sem. S.* Rouse
I do not know who the other Rouses are or anything about them yet.

I will take any help I can get unravelling this mystery as I have almost ran out of ideas. I do have additional information on Paschal's children and a little bit more on Henry F. Rouse and Emily A. (Rouse) Foote's descendants if needed. Paschal's children were all born in Madison in the 1850's (Clarence, Ernest, William and Rose), I do not have most of the birth certificates though. I have only been able to prove my 3rd great-grandfather's birth (Clarence). I also have a little extra information on Gilbert that may or may not help. I appreciate your time and any help that can be given. Thank you very much.

Sincerely,
Chi (Rouse) Benedict

Wife of Professor William Francis Allen, 1884 News Article

I am not related, but ran across this item I thought someone who is might appreciate. It is a news article in a Montana paper about in incident in Yellowstone National Park (which has its own "Grand Canyon").

Livingstone Enterprise, August 4, 1884
The wife of Prof. Wm. Allen, of Madison, Wisc., while at the Grand Canyon, was attacked and fearfully bitten by wild beasts. Her two sons came to her assistance, and with much difficulty succeeded in rescuing her. They had no arms with them, having been informed at the Mammoth Hot Springs Post Office that hunting in the Park was strictly prohibited. She was terribly bitten on her hands and face before the insatiable blood-suckers could be choked or smoked off. Mrs. Allen is highly indignant at the secretary's order prohibiting the killing of animals in the National Park. She declares they ought to be shot, no matter how enchanting their song may be. These were the only wild beasts she encountered during her tour in teh Park. When she comes again she gives fair notice that she will come armed to teh teeth, and will kill every blood-sucking bird or beast of prey, unless the assistants are on hand to furnish them with food sufficient to amuse them while she is tending to her own business.

I am still trying to find out info. about my Mom's side of the Family. I have very little to go on. She died in 1969, when I was just two years old. I have her marriage cert., which lists her Parent's names as Hallick Braaten, and Selma (Simmons) Braaten. I was also told that my Mom had a Brother name David. I think that he might have lived in MN, but I don't know for sure about that either. I have no other info. ANYTHING that anyone could do to help me would be appreciated. I have requested her death cert., but I am sure that it will just list the same names once again. I am trying to get dates, and places. I was told once that my Mom grew up in Deerfield, WI (Dane). I do not know if this is true either. Maybe Hallick and Selma are buried in Deerfield, but where? How many places are there? Probably a lot. Both of my Parents are buried in what was (or is-not sure?) called Forest Hills. I know where they are buried. I have a lot of info. about my Dad's side of his Family, but not my Mom's. I will keep searching. I am doing this not only for myself, but for my Daughter. Thanks for the help, if you can give me any.

FULTON and mother of James T., William S., Albert, Elvira, Ellen S., Alfred, Franklin, Edward E., Arthur and 3 other children according to a census report indicating she had 12 children. Those unknown three may have died in infancy.

I am specifically looking for an obituary. I believe she died in Madison, Dane County, Wisconsin, but am not certain. She lived most of her life in Exeter, Green County, Wisconsin. She does show up in the 1900 US Census living in Madison with her daughter Elvira TORGERSON, but is mentioned in the 1896 obituary of her mother Marinda LOVELAND SILVER as being too frail to attend.

I believe she may have passed away in 1905 living in Madison, Dane County, Wisconsin living with her daughter Elvira TORGERSON.
Married Betsy (can't seem to find maiden name), They had children, |Peter O. born 1968m, son John (no birth info), son Chris (1873-1932-my grandfather who married Abbie Turner BAKKEN-ANDERSON) and a daughter in 1929 was listed only as a Mrs. Frank BERGSTROM of Evansville, MN. DNK if Peter and Betsy were married in Primrose, or, they farmed in Chaffey, ND and could have married anywhere in WI for that matter. I need to know the names of Luthern Churches in Primrose in the 1860's...searching for possible relatives...where are the newspaper articles of that time listed? Are there any relatives in Primrose that match the above? Many Peterson's listed on the deeds of that county...on Internet. Can't match as yet.
POTTER FAMILY

I am trying to locate history on the Benjamin POTTER family who resided in Oneida County until about 1840. Benjamin POTTER born late 1700's possibly Oneida Co. NY,and wife Polly CLEVELAND born about 1805 Oneida Co NY. About 1845 they moved to WI and eventually settled in Dane Co. WI. I am sure they had more than one child born in Oneida Co. NY but I have only one that I know for certain and that was Jerome Bertram POTTER born 1826 in Oneida Co and married Amanda TRUESDELL who was born 1829 maybe in Oneida Co. They married 1849 in Oneida Co.I believe that Benjamin and Polly POTTER are buried some where in Dane Co. Jerome POTTER and wife went on to Juneau County and farmed and are buried in Juneau Co. I have not been able to find Benjamin POTTER wife in the Dane County WI census but son Jerome Potter's obit from Juneau Co. states Benjamin and Polly lived in Dane Co. Most of the above info that I do have was found in family trees with Ancestry.com. If anyone has any history or knowledge of this family, please contact me.
I am looking for information regarding Daniel Lincoln, who was Adjutant in the 11th Wisconsin Infantry Civil War Regiment. His residence is listed as Madison and the dates I have found are (rank from) Sept. 10, 1861 to (resigned) Jul. 28, 1863.

I am hoping to find information that might tell me whether he is the same Daniel Lincoln who was my G-G-G-Grandmother's brother. All I know about him is that he was born in NY about 1831 and was living in Granville, Milwaukee Co., WI at the time of the 1850 census. I have been able to find no other information about him.

If anyone has any info, PLEASE email me! Any help will be greatly appreciated!

Hi, I am looking for some missing puzzle pieces by the last name Gunhus and Bower (or Bowerman or Aakhus). Family History has them as remaining in Dane County while the other siblings ventured off to Goodhue County, Minnesota. I tracked down some Gunhus' in Wisconsin but they don't know the names of their great-grandparents so at this time I can not connect them to my tree.

Help in finding record of Margaret Griffin

I ama searching for any record for Margaret Griffin. She was born in Clare Ireland 7 Jan 1860. She came to America and to Lyndon WI in 1867 with her father and siblings. I have very little information about Margaret even though I have had good luck with the siblings. Just recently I was sent some family tree information written in the 1950's that says Margaret died in Madison WI in 1910. I would appreciate if someone who has access to WI death records might be able to find one for Margaret. If I could find a death record perhaps I could find an obituary and learn more. I do not believe Margaret ever married so her name would be Margaret Griffin. Any help would be appreciated.
