Zebulon Pike's visit in 1808

Any family history buffs?
According to Pike's diary of his visit to Prairie du Chein en 1808, he met with Joseph Rolette, a french-canadian trader, Henry M. Fisher, also in the fur trade, and a John Woods. Also Mr Fraser a clerk and his employer.
According to the Minnesota Historical society, John Woods was a pro British trader who left Prairie du Chein before the 1812 war broke out, and went to Michigan. Henry Fisher was also worried about the war and left with some of his sons, about the same time.
According to Reentmeisters, Jean Dubois was a trader from Michigan....born 1755 to Ignace Dubois and T. Campion. The Reentmeisters' book places Jean Dubois at Prairie du Chein, before 1800. They also claim that Dubois was drowned with his boss/(uncle?) Campion in 1791 or 92. The Jesuit priest records that Jean Dubois was saved from that accident.
I am looking for any information about these people.
I cannot prove that Jean Dubois and John Woods were the same person.....or that they weren't.
At that day the traders were an elite class. Rolette had a part Sioux wife who was a Dubois. Fisher also had a part native american wife, however they were prominant folks at the Prairie.

Children were born in Canada (probably Escott, Leeds County) and New York (probably Jefferson County). Most daughters married in Milwaukee prior to moving to Eastman. Sarah and most of the children lived in Crawford County circa 1851-1870, then moved to Tuscola County, Michigan: Eliza, wife of Thadeus Langford; Lucinda, wife of Aurelius Zanders, Minerva, wife of Henry Bailey, sons Ozias and John. Daughter Sarah married John Wood (both died in Crawford County prior to 1870) and their daughters Mary Eveline, Sarah and Chloe remained in Crawford County.

Is there an index of marriages for the old Courier Press or Prarie du Chien Union newspapers? I am trying to find evidence of a marriage for Andrew Reitemeyer and Mary Schneider which was mentioned in the history of Crawford County.

I am aware of the index of Saint Gabriel's marriages and suprisingly did not see this marriage in that index.

Hello,
My great-grandfather, William W. Steele, married Martha A. Annis on 3 Oct 1866 at Prarie du Chien. The minister who performed the ceremony was Alfred Bronson, D. D.
I would like to determine what church my great-grandparents were married in. Does anyone know what church Rev. Bronson was affiliated with?
I have never understood why a couple who both lived in Edgewood (Delaware Co.), Iowa, would have gone to Prarie du chien to be married. Any ideas?
Thanks, Ted

Seeking information about George Klein(possible Kline or Cline), married to Margaret Dumars on May 19th, 1817, where they were married and where they died/buried, this I do not know. Family records say the familiy entered Wisconsin up river, landing in Crawford county, at Prairie du Chien. George had a sister, also named Margaret, who married Noble Dumars, the brother of George's wife. Margaret and George had a brother Jacob, as well, but the only information we have on him is he was a navigator on boats working on the Ohio and then Mississippi rivers, and that he eventually died in Wisconsin.

George served in the War of 1812, and was born in Pennsylvannia

They had six children: Mons Aaland, Signe Aaland, Hilda Aaland, Caroline Aaland, Bertha Aaland and Conrad Aaland. Signe Aaland was my grandmother. She married Harry McGregor (also of Crawford County) and they moved to Minneapolis, MN. They had two children: Harold McGregor and Eleanor McGregor Reiner.

It appears by this census that Louis & William are one and the same person why he is noted as Louis & Wm in 1870 and Isabella 1866 is not noted in 1870 is a mystery but Virginia says she had 3 children and that would be Clara, Louis and Isabella so appears to be mistake. Virginia Cayon remained with her son Louis until her death of which I do not know but was by 1930.

I have no obit for Joseph Cayon as of this date.
I am looking for volunteers to transcribe cemeteries in Crawford County. RootsWeb has an ongoing transcription project that has been very useful to many, including me. If you're interested, the details are at the following link: http://www.rootsweb.com/~cemetery/index.html. There are still several available. Here is the Crawford County link: http://www.rootsweb.com/~cemetery/wisconsin/crawfo.htm.

This is a great summer project.

I saw your message to Larry O'Shaughnessy and Scoville jumped out at me. My maternal ggrandparents were Hattie Scoville and Tom Goldspink. They met and married in Kansas while Hatties father Charles tried his hand at farming. The family decided to return to Wisconsin, but Hattie, of course, stayed with her Tom. They moved to the Osage, Indian Territory around 1900 which was before Oklahoma became a state. They had six children: Hazel, Ben, Laura, Cora, Grace and Homer. Laura, my grandmother, married Jesse Rueben Trimm and they had three children: Ila, Allyne, and Ben. Allyne is my mother. She died in January of this year.
I knew that Hatties father was Charles L. Scoville and that they migrated from Wisconsin but I could not remember Hattie's mother's name. I remember Mother describing Grandma Scoville's visits to Oklahoma when I was young but my mother had Alzheimers (sp) Disease for 20 years and was unable to jog my memory. I was glad to find your message today. I guess we must be related - some kind of cousins. I will be happy to furnish information and documentation of what I have gathered. I hope you will do the same.
Sincerely,
Kate Terres (kt11733@kayserv.net)

This is funny. I do not know either of you, but looks like Mr. Haskins and I are related. Have same gggrandmothers, Arminda Cron Scoville. I was searching this site for cemeteries that he mentioned and I plan to e-mail him when I finish here. Good luck.

Kills Woman With Hammer

On Tuesday moring last an altercation took place between John Rounds and Mrs. Park Hillsenberger of Gays Mills, who resides on adjoining properties. The bad blood between the two lay in the fact that the woman persisted in passing through his yard to get water. It so incensed Rounds that in the war of words he struck her over the head with a hammer, which resulted in her death. The murderer is in the county jail at Prairie du Chien and there is considerable talk of mob violence.

June 13, 1907, Evansville Review, Evansville, Wisconsin

She married Thurlow Weed LACY also of Prarie du Chien. I know her father is Flavian CHERRIER and mother is Mary Lousia LESSARD or LESSORT.
Harvey Edward Rayner was married to Neoma Belle Townsend. I located her grave site in CRAWFORD COUNTY, North Clayton. I know that Harvey (my grandfather) remarried ater Neoma died. His second wife's name was Annie. Harvey would have died somewhere around 1925-27? I think. His second wife resided in Beloit, Wisconsin when she was old. I would appreciate hearing from anyone with information on the Rayners and Townsends from Crawford County.

David,

Thank you for finding that information, I hopefully will be able to further my search! Was there any other bits of information on Benjamin P. Shockley and Abigail (Hart) Shockley as to where they were born or parents? As to Martha Ann (Dupee) Kumerine who married Dr. Franklin Kumerine, I think I found her at Family Search, her parents are listed as Francis Dupee and Sarah Chadeayne born in Readstown, Vermont County, Wisconsin in 1821 and 1822 respectively. I saw the name Claude Kumerine in a free posting on Ancesty.com and he was from Marietta, married to Rhoda Haskins. He was married in a double wedding at Haney Township, WI Nov 25, 1903. But I don't know how he was related for sure- maybe a brother? Thank you again!!

I'm interested in any census from 1840 through 1860 for Frederick & Frederica JOOS. Family history records them as living in Prairie du Chein during this time, then they moved unto MN. We know one son was born there in 1854 and believe they had two sons and a daughter already. Any help would be greatly appreciated, thanks in advance.

Photo Booklet Available

Over the past five years, I have been working with my grandmother, Bessie (Konicheck) Shulka of Prairie du Chien to identify very old family photographs. Many photos belonged to her father (Charles Joseph Konichek) and her mother (Mary Julia (Mara) Konichek). Recently, I completed a booklet containing approximately 100 photographs. Bessie has identified nearly all the photographs and in many cases, a short “recollection” about the person has been included. The majority of the photos are of family and residents of Crawford County in the late 1800s and early 1900s.

The booklet is approximately 70 pages long, has a laminated cover and is bound with a plastic spiral binding. I have also indexed the booklet so individuals can be easily identified (see surname list). This booklet is available for sale for $20, which includes shipping.

If you are interested in purchasing a copy of this booklet please drop me an email at joeshulka@aol.com. My hope is to distribute this booklet as widely as possible to family and friends.
~~~~~~~~~~
Note: Email address as posted - jshulka@aol.com - failed on 6-25-00. --eb
Edward Haugen
Does anyone have information on Edward Haugen (1860-1952)? He owned a farm in Freeman township and was married to Carrie Anderson on Sept.11, 1895. They are buried in West Prairie Cemetery in Sterling Township of Vernon County. The couple had two children, Emma Berting (died in infancy) and Alma May, who married Edward Johnson. They had no children, so there are apparently no descendants. I am trying to establish whether this Edward is identical with Edvard Hansen Rødalshaugen, born Feb. 25, 1860, in Ringebu, Oppland, Norway. Edvard emigrated in 1882, probably in May. Edvard was the son of Hans Hansen Rødalshaugen and Abelone Engebretsdotter.
