POW/MIA Korean War

I am searching for the family of a soldier who was killed in the Korea War. When he entered service he gave Bayfield County, Wisconsin as his home of record.

Soldier: WILLIAM FRANCIS ROY
Born:1928
Date of loss: Jan. 12, 1952

When the Korean War ended the enemy never returned or accounted for over 8,000 of our servicemen. They died in their hands. That was over 50 years ago. Since that time DNA has been perfected and also they are recovering remains in North Korea. Our government is obligated to return those remains to the proper family. DNA samples have been obtained from most of the families of these missing soldiers. For various reasons some families have not been located. There are 36 families from Wisconsin that have not been located. There are one family from Bayfield County that has not been located.

When the remains are recovered and identified they will be returned to the family for proper burial. I am just an old (78 years) Combat Veteran out of the Korean War and thankful that I did return. I consider this a very noble cause and I hope that you can help in some way to find this family. For more information on the project you may go to http://www.jpac.pacom.mil/. My part in the program is to match up the lost families with the proper agency.

I will be grateful for any assistance in locating this family.

Harold Davis
40th Infantry Division
Korea ’52-‘53
910-791-2333
hgdavis@bellsouth.net
Where to go for Bayfield adoption records

Does anyone know where I should start to look for adoption records for my grandfather? I believe he may have been adopted by a family residing at Red Cliff/Bayfield sometime between 1900-1905. He was most likely born in New York. If you have any tips for me, let me know. I believe the information on his adoption should be public information now, since it is more than 100 years old and my grandfather is deceased. Thanks for any tips you might have.

As I was "surfing" one day , I ran across a site that listed those from Bayfield county (Cable) that were killed in the war. Two of my uncles had died 2 weeks apart in Europe.
Their names are ADOLPH & ERNEST WITTWER. I found 1 name, but not the other. After talking to my mother, I was told that Adolph had enlisted under another name, John Adams (long story!).
I was going to check again, but now I've been searching to find that site for the last 2 years!
If anyone knows of that site or how to find that info I'd really appreciate it!

Elmer went to the Coldwater State School in 1891 & left there about 1897-8. I have just discovered he pos. went to Canada to a sister's but have no proof that he did. I do know that in 1943 he (using Elmer Tenner spelling) was in Wisconsin (Route 1, Bayfield), married & had 6 children & to my knowledge unaware of his relatives. I would be very interested in contacting anyone in this family or receiving any relevant info. for this is my extent of knowledge here.

Bergquist / Eggan Bayfield/Ashland Wisconsin

Hi all,
I have a Leonard Bergquist born 1863 in Sweden, married to Elizabeth Maria Blomberg f.1880 and who died in 1910. Sometime between 1910 and 1920 Leonard married Katrina Einarsd Eggan who had come to America in 1910 with her son Ole Eggan f.1893 from Trøndelag area. I have found them in the 1920 and 1930 census. Leonard died in 1935. I have Ole's WWI papers and his death and burial in 1921. Katrina's son appears to be buried at Mount Hope Cemetery also having died in 1921 although the record online says born in 1921? The family in Norway only have the information that he died in 1921 while in the military.
What I am searching for is the death date of Katrina Einarsd Eggan Bergquist f.16/3/1868 and her burial. In 1920 and 1930 they are living in Kelly, Bayfield County, Wisconsin on a dairy farm. I have found Leonard's daughter Dagny's obituary (hoping it would mention Katrina) which is listed below. I suspect I will need to find Leonard's obituary or Katrina's to actually find out what happened to Katrina. Leonard is buried in Ashland County.
Katrina has a 87 year old granddaughter who lives in Norway and is wondering what happened to her.
Appreciate any ideas.
Margit in Minnesota

Bergquist, Leonard
b. 1863 d. 1935 Mount Hope Cemetery
Ashland
Ashland County
Wisconsin, USA

Bergquist, Mary
b. 1880 d. 1910 Mount Hope Cemetery
Ashland
Ashland County
Wisconsin, USA

Pvt Ole Eggan
Birth: Jun. 22, 1921
Death: unknown
Burial:
Mount Hope Cemetery
Ashland
Ashland County
Wisconsin, USA

Step daughter to Katrina
8-25-2006
Dagny Fryklund Briggs, 103, Dagny Marencia Fryklund Briggs, age 103, of Ashland, died Wednesday, August 23, 2006 at Court Manor Health and Rehabilitation Services in Ashland. She was born February 12, 1903 in Ashland, the daughter of Leonard and Maria (Blomberg) Bergquist.

She was a lifelong Ashland area resident and a member of Salem Baptist Church in Ashland. She married Iner Fryklund in Ashland on July 23, 1923. He preceded her in death in 1950. On Jan. 1, 1958 she married Lee Briggs in Waukegan, Ill. He preceded her in death in 1977.

She was an owner and operator of a laundromat in Ashland and a restaurant in the Northwestern Train Depot in Ashland. She also worked at Court Manor as a baker until she was 80 years old. She enjoyed knitting very much, knitting blankets and afghans for many in the area and in other countries.

She is survived by a daughter-in-law, Joyce Fryklund of Hibbing, Minn.; grandsons, Mark (Laurie) Fryklund of Edmond, Okla. and Scott (Jacque) Fryklund of Eden Prairie, Minn.; six great-grandchildren: Aaron, Elizabeth, Justin, Kali, Erik and Amber; three step-children, Dorothy Dunn of Waukesha, Paul Briggs of Appleton and Bob Briggs of New Jersey; step-grandchildren and step-great-grandchildren; two nieces and a nephew; and other relatives and friends.

Besides her husbands, she was preceded in death by her parents; a son, Vernon Fryklund in 2005; a grandson, Jay Fryklund in 2000; two step-children, Russell Briggs and Don Briggs; three sisters and a brother.

The funeral service will be held at Salem Baptist Church in Ashland on Monday, Aug. 28, at 1:30 p.m. Rev.

I am looking for information or family members that know anything about my grandfather Albert Lincoln Prouty. Albert was born in 1885 in Baraboo, Wisconsin. Albert's mother name I do believe was Annie ?. I do not know who his father was, but I believe that he had a stepfather by the name of Simon Frye. They all lived in Juneau, Wisconsin. ALbert had two brothers by the names of Arthur born in 1881 and brother either named Rynare or Ren born in 1879. Albert passed away in 1968. HE was married to a Meliva Anderson whom I believe was born in 1887m in Sweden, I do not know when her family immigrated over her. My grandmother passed away in 1928 and that is all I know about her. Albert and Meliva had two sons Alfred born in 1918 and Edwin my father born in 1925, I was told that there was a third son Clifford but I have no idea if it is true or when he was born. I cannot find any information on my family at all and my father passed away in 1995, way before I thought about doing the genealogy on the family. Can anyone help me in my search for my family information?
Thank You Debbie
I have purchased/rescued an old cabinet card photo of a child named Nellie Harrison. Nellie appears to be about 4 years of age, and she is standing in a chair while wearing a long dark dress. This photo was taken by W. A. Bradley who had studios in Washburn & Ashland, WS. I suspect it was taken in the 1890’s, but that is just a guess. The photo is in good condition. It does appear a bit faded, but part of that may be to the sepia tones of the picture. There is no damage to the image, and no tears or creases. So, if Nellie is yours, or you have an interest in this photo, please contact me at: jmje36@aol.com. I am not on the mail lists which pertain to this photo.
I am looking for any information about my great grandparents, Jorden and Christine Matson, who lived in Iron River, Wisconsin around 1914. I do not know where they were born, but a newspaper article in the Iron River Pioneer, Nov 26, 1914 states that Mrs. Jurgen Matsen, died on Nov 24, 1914, after complications a giving birth to a son. She had eight children, the youngest being two, so the baby must have died as well.

My grandfather, Francis George Matson, was around 9 years old when his mother died. He was born the middle child 07 Mar 1906. Other records state that he was born in Hutchinson, MN. The children were adopted after Christine died. Francis was adopted by Tony Madsen and Mary Jensen. Francis married Clara Swedin 02 Mar 1926 in Minnesota. His oldest brother's name was Carl.

The article also states that Christine was survived by her husband, her father, two brothers (Torvel of Orienta and Lager of Ressemer, Mich) and two sisters (Mrs. A. G. Nelson of Orienta and Mrs. Christ Betker, residing out west.)

This is the only information that I have on this family. If anyone can help me, I would deeply appreciate it. Thank you for your help.

Debbie Tammaro
tontam@hotmail.com

I found my gr. grandfather's (Nels Swanson) mother - Petrenella Swanson on the 1900 Census of Bayfield Co., Wis. Info states that she was born - Feb.1836, in Sweden, age 64, widowed, had 11 children, all living, and that she came to the US in 1899. She was with Nels at the time of this census. But she was not on the 1905 or the 1910 census's. I would love to know what happened to her and about her other children. None of my Aunt's or Uncle's knew anything about her being here. So I don't know if she stayed with Nels or went to live with any of her other children. I did a Google search of her name. I did come across a Petrenella Swanson who graduated from college in Aurora, Ill. not to long ago. If any of you know her, please have her contact me or ask her the story of where her name came from and pass it on to me.Thank you, Norma

My great grandfather, John Jonas ROUSSEAU was born May 17, 1875 at Beaver Island, Michigan to Charles & Charlotte Rousseau. John was raised on or near the Red Cliff Reservation possibly in an orpanage at Holy Family Chuch / Convent. There is also a link to a family named Babineau. I don't know what the connection is but I have been told John's mothers maiden name was either MARTIN or BABINEAU. My grandmother used to talk about visiting a relative, Charlie BABINEAU in Bayfield.
But I'm wondering if this Babineau family may have just raised John. Maybe friends of the family?
If anyone has any information on this family PLEASE contact me. This has been a brick wall for 6 years and I'm very ready for it to fall apart!!!!!
Thank you,
Delayne

Here's hoping someone can help with an obituary, death notice, or cemetery reading. Wellington H. Fletcher, per the SSDI, died on May 27, 1993, in Washburn, Bayfield Co., WI. He was a son of Alexander and Sarah Fletcher, and a native of WVA. He came west to Sawyer Co., WI, in the company of his mother and another sibling; it's not certain as to whether his father died back east or after the family moved. His last census appearance was in Draper, Sawyer Co., in 1930, and was shown living with his mother Sarah, brother Earl, and sister Eunice Fletcher Zimerla, the latter with her husband Frank.

David Fletcher
Richmond, VA

His daughter May resided with him. Patrick died in 1920, sometime after the census was done on March 3rd. I've been trying, unsuccessfully, to find his exact DOD & his obit. Just recently I was told The Iron River Pioneer newspaper is on microfilm at the State Historical Society, at Madison, Wisc. Is there someone who could do a look-up & photocopy for me? I'd be willing to pay.
Thanks from your Northern neighbor in B.C.
Gloria Howard

Generoux from LaPointe

Looking for information about family last name Generoux on the 1880 census of LaPointe. It appears from later enteries for this family that they were part Native American. Does anyone have any information on that. My ancestor married into this family and it appears had little to do with the rest of her family after that point. This was 1880s. She is shown on census as married to Henry Generoux. Her name was Olive L.Justice, whose family also lived at Lapointe. I find her 20 years later in Milwaukee spelling her name Genery and also all of the children are now spelling it that way and she is a widow. Does anyone have any publications or information about the Generoux family and their native american history?

I am searching for Mitchell relatives that were originally from France, migrated to Canada and then on to the U.S. in the 1800s. Originally, the family was likely named St-Michel or St. Mitchel., but changed to Mitchell.

My ancestors include: Basil(e), Gilbert, Levi, John and maybe a Gabril(e). It is believed the family migrated from France to Montreal, Quebec. Several migrated to Massena, Long Sault Island, St Lawrence Co.,Canada. Levi moved on to Minnesota, John to Michigan and then on to Bayfield Co., Mason, Wisconsin. It is believed Gilbert died in a tragic fire in Nov 1907.

Please contact me with your connections.
mgprokosch@gmail.com

Swenson, Nels and Martha ---- Knutson, Peder and Anna---Mason area of Bayfield County

Hi, I am helping a friend in Norway with finding out what happened to a branch of his family who came to America. The family had 3 daughters who immigrated. From what I have been able to find out 2 of the daughters lived in the Mason (Maison), Bayfield County, Wisconsin area.

The daughter, Anna Eiriksdatter was born in 1865 and immigrated in 1884. From the census records I have been able to determine she married a Peder Knutson (Knudson) and is found in the 1900 and 1910 census records living in Mason town in Bayfield. They are listed in 1900 with two daughters, Anna and Inga. Inga ended up in Minot, North Dakota and died in February, 1971.

The daughter, Martha (Marta) Eiriksdatter was born in 1868 and immigrated in 1887. The man I am helping in Norway had a note that Martha married a Nils Svenson and had children, one of whom was named Erek and the family in Norway had a letter from the early 1900's saying they lived in the city of Maison, Wisconsin at that time.
From the 1910 census records I have been able to determine that the family was livng in the town of Mason and they were:
Nels Swenson, wife Martha, children Ivar, Erick, Melvin, Kenneth and a daughter, Ingebjorg, The children range in ages from 14 to 1. In the 1920 census Nels and Martha are living in the Town of Kelly, Bayfield, Wisconsin.

Any information anyone might have about these two families would be greatly appreciated. Martha and Anna also had a sister named Ingjerd who immigrated in 1877.

Jean Marthaler,
St. Joseph, Minnesota
