I am particularly interested in finding a date of death for August Sandberg, who immigrated from Västra Tunhem, Ålvsborg, in 1888. His wife Elin and son Karl joined him in Ashland in 1890. Son Hilmer was born in Ashland in 1895.
August died a few days after a horrible accident in a blast furnace. The date will be in 1898 or 1899, according to family story.
Elin took in boarders to survive, and in 1900 married again, one of her boarders, Anders Fred Sundberg.
August was buried in Mount Hope Cemetery, but I am told a street widening obliterated the grave.
I have a few queries out to the state, but there's nothing like a good parish record. Thanks for any help you may be able to give.

Hi Gary,

I recently started to search the Harteau name and saw your post. Sam Harteau, my grandfather, was John Henry's son.
His daughter, my mother, was adopted (not formally) and they didn't tell of her background. Sam died in 1940 in St. Paul, MN. After John Hebnry's first wife, Celia Vincent, died her parents used to vist him and his second wife who was an Indian women on the Bad River Indian Reservation. If you have info please let me know. We would appreciate it. Thank you.

Please e-mail me. denicejusa@usfamily.net

Need help with Rousseau who was a boarder

Hi,

I'm working on my Rousseau Family which has been a brick wall for about 15 years and I'm trying to follow any person who may be a connection and hoping to find something that I can use.
Here is a long, but shortened, version of what I know about my family.

My 2nd great grandfather, Charles Rousseau, born about 1832 in Canada married Charlotte Martin (daughter of Solomon Martin) and the family lived in St. Ignace, Michigan from 1850-1880 (could be earlier as well as later but this is all I know from the census records).

Charles and Charlotte had their kids in Michigan (I'm guessing St. Ignace with the exception of my great grandfather)---There are no records that I can find in Michigan on any of these people except my great grandfather.
Their kids are:
Joseph M. Rousseau born about 1867 in Michigan
Charlotte J. Rousseau born about 1868 in Michigan
Charles Rousseau born about 1871 in Michigan
John Jonas Rousseau (my great grandfather) born May 17, 1875 in Beaver Island, Michigan

There were also two other children, but they were Charlotte's kids from her 1st husband, Antoine Babineau.
These kids were:
Antoine Babineau born about 1854 in Michigan
Macala Babineau born about 1859 in Michigan

John Jonas' daughter (my grandma) used to talk of family named Babineau in Bayfield/Ashland Wisconsin and would go visit a Charlie Babineau who I have a photo of.

John Jonas told family he was raised in an orphanage on the Red Cliff Indian Reservation. He always said he lived his childhood in Wisconsin in the Bayfield/Ashland area. He only talked about his one brother Charles, who supposedly moved to Duluth, MN, and the family had no idea of the other siblings so I have nothing to go on for my family search. John refused to speak of his parents.

With all of that said (sorry it was so long) I have found a Joseph Rousseau in the 1900 Sanborn, Ashland Census

Joseph Rousseau born about August 1869 in Wisconsin (but we all know that may not be his place of birth) he was a boarder and working as a Teamster (this is what it looked like on the census record to me) for yard.

Is there any one who is willing to search a little for this Joseph and see what they can find? I need to find something to connect to my family. I'm willing to pay costs.

Thank you,
Delayne

Grace, Not sure if you're stilling looking for information.
But, Francis and Antoinette had an un-named infant son born and died in 1904 and buried here in Mount Hope Cemetery in Ashland, Ashland County, Wisconsin.
Francis died in 1924 and is buried here.
Antoinette died in sometime in November, 1951 and is also buried here at Mount Hope, although her individual grave is un-marked. There is a large "Schlecht" mounument and flat markers for Francis X. and "Infant Son." I have posted photos on Find-A-Grave.com
Do you know Antoinette's date of birth? I would love to add it to our records or any other info you may have on her.

Sally - Mount Hope Cemetery

Barb,
First, I don't have a tree on Ancestry. My stuff is all in books that I've done.

Before Louis Hilaire married Mary Jane Adams he was married to Sophia Lamoureux daughter of Francois Lamoureux and Maria Kadjidgi. They married at LaPointe in 1839. They had 4 children: Maria b. 23 Jul 1840; Catherine b. 30 Jan 1842; Louisa b. 1 Mar 1844: Hilaire aka Illare aka Eli b. 15 May 1846. Sophia died 1846 or 1847. Louis Hilaire then married Mary Jane Adams in 1848. She was from Rivieria du loop. Louis Hilaire drowned 27 Nov. 1880 at LaPointe. Angelique, the 3rd wife's maiden name was Lagros. I descend from Louisa from the first marriage. Illare aka Hilare, ada Eli from the first marriage is who I'm seaching for death information. Oh, Louis Hilaire was born 25 Aug. 1814 in Berthierville, Berthier Co. Quebec, St. Genevieve de Berthier. It's hard to find death records in Wisconsin as it was not required in those times that they be recorded with the State. Have to depend on Church records.
Hope some of this info gives you some help. Best, Judy from Michigan

hello
I am still working on parts of the same family. Eli's brother Henry E born in 1850 (or is Henry E really Eli?) was married to a gggaunt in the Justice family tree, she was named Olive Louise Justice Gardner (part of the mystery - her father appears to be a Gardner but she was raised by a Justice). Henry would have died before 1890, he was listed as the lighthouse tender in Ashland in 1888-1889. Thereafter she was listed as a widow. His family took the name Genery from that point forward it seems.

Here is my tree link
http://trees.ancestry.com/tree/22610099/person/1278075939

Will keep my eyes open for Eli if you can point me to your tree

Barb

His son is my ggg uncle who served in the Civil War. We want him to have a Civil War military headstone and can't find him after 1883 when he was in Michigan. Again, Thank you.

In the "Liber Defunctorum" (death registry) for St. Joseph Mission (La Pointe) and Holy Family Catholic Church (Bayfield)[edited and compiled by Linda Bristol, Bayfield, WI, 1994] there is this entry:

Nov. 30, 1880
Hilarii Genereux, age ca 65 years
Died: Nov. 27, 1880.
Parents: blank
Cemetery: La Pointe.
Priest: Eustace Vollmer
Priest's notation: "Drowned in the Lake"

The cemetery "La Pointe" probably means the cemetery adjacent to St. Joseph's although it is possible it could mean the "Old Catholic Cemetery" at the original mission site south of the marina.

Though your post on the Generoux family at LaPointe is from 2006, I thought I'd take a chance. Hilaire Generoux was married to Sophia Lamoureux before Jane Adams. Hilaire and Sophia had a son, Hilaire Generoux aka Eli Genery born in 1846 at Riviera Sauteux which was in Minnesota Territory. He was baptised at LaPointe. Long story but I am trying to find his death information, date, place and where buried. We would like him to have a military headstone for his service in the Michigan Infantry during the Civil War. Can you help with that? Sophia Lamoureux was my ggg grandmother. Thank you. Judy from Michigan

Hello,
My mother's name is Darlene Amelung who was taken to the Monroe County Wisconsin School for Dependent Children in Sparta, Wisconsin after her birth in 1934. She has always maintained that she is Native American, but we have no birth records, or adoption records. She was "adopted" by Albert and Emma Amelung in Ashland WI in or around 1937. There is no on line data about her since the 1940 census data won't come out till April 2012. Does anyone know what Sparta was like in 1937? Any suggestions on how to find out about my mother's residence @ Sparta? We do not know her mother or father's name.
