George Dawes book about resident of Adams Co., WI

My 2nd great-granduncle, George William Russell (1853-1930), migrated to Wood Co., Wisconsin in the mid-1870's and then settled near Monroe Center, Adams Co., WI. He married Edith H. STEWART and they're both buried in the cemetery at Monroe Center.

A couple of years ago, a correspondent sent me a copy of paragraphs from a manuscript or book that George Dawes wrote about rural residents of Adams County. The paragraphs describe humorous and interesting activities about my George W. Russell and others.

I want to reproduce these paragraphs and provide a detailed reference to the George Dawes document, i.e., title, publication information, etc. I've searched on the Internet but have not been able to find the target document.

I would appreciate it if you could provide me with the detailed reference information.

Paul E.
Irish Familes in Dellona, New Haven and Dells

I am decendent of Timothy O'Connell (b. 1826 Co. Kerry Ireland, d. 1871) who lived in New Haven Township near Big Springs. His family along with many other Irish familes in this area came to the Dells working on the Milwaukee - LaCrosse railroad around 1857-1859. Prior to settling in the Dells, these familes worked on the Indianapolis - Terre Haute railroad and settled in Greencastle, Putnam Co. Indiana approximately 1852-1855. Timothy's daughter Catherine, and son Daniel were born in Greencastle. They most likely enterd the US through the port of Boston.

Timothy emigrated from Ireland with four brothers. Two of them, Morris and James, settled in the Dells area. The other two either settled in Indiana, Boston, or Baltimore. There were two other O'Connell families in this area. Patrick O'Connell was Timothy's first cousin, and I am unsure how Michael O'Connell was related.

Timothy married Mary Shahan probably in Indiana. She was the daughter of Timothy Shahan. Timothy Shahan settled in the Dells. Timothy Shahan most likely passed away in the Dells area, but I am unable to find his death certificate or burial. His sons moved to Boone County, Indiana.

If anyone has any information to share please e-mail me.

I would like information on the Greenwood family who lived in Adams county. My great-great grandfather, Thomas Jackson Greenwood married Eliza Strawbridge Turner in 1825. About 1850 they moved to Quincy, WI. She died in Sept 1865, and he died Oct 25, 1885. I would like to know where they are buried.
Their son, Mellen, b 1828, worked at lumbering in Quincy, WI until about April 1858.
Thomas Greenwood's son by his first wife was Leonard Greenwood, b.1821 and he bought a farm in Quincy, WI in 1855. Leonard's son, Albert Greenwood, b. 1856, was in partnership of Greenwood and Hesler (a retail hardware store) at Friendship, WI. Also believe he was a sheriff of Adams county in the early 1900s.
I would appreciate any information on this family.

Fran Anderson

I would appreciate an obituary lookup for three children who were killed in a fire in the town of Adams on January 28, 1952. Their names are Lavern (age 3), Ronald (age 1) and Barbara (age 2) Paulick. Their parents were Walter and Lillian. They are buried in Friendship cemetery. If possible, I would like the name of the newspaper that list the obituary/ies. Thank you

In 1848 Horace and Hannah Morgan purchased land in Adams County. If there are any interested I have the family history going back to the year 270. Going forward, I have the history of the family through their son, Justin Morgan, who homesteaded in the Towns of Easton/New Chester. At present I am working on the members of the family from the middle of the 1900's to present, trying to update the history and locating the missing links.

In the Atkins family I have what there is known from Horace Atkins birth in England in 1816, to their move to Adams County in 1845, and through to the death of Eva Pearl Atkins Werner in 2001. There are family members that moved away that can fill in the gaps. At this time I have not been able to locate them.

Looking for info on Theron Clark Chaffee, born abt 02-1880 in White Creek, WI and am not sure which county that was in in 1880. He might have died young, but don't know. His father was James W. Chaffee dob 09-06-1842 in Peterboro, Madison Co., NY but lived in Sauk Co.(Kilbourn City and Baraboo)for a time. Theron's mother was Amarilla "Eliza" Clark dob 05-17-1847 Peterboro, NY. Do know that James and Eliza ended up in Santa Monica, L.A. Co., in the early 1900's(at least 1920)and died there. Cannot locate Theron to this present date. Any sources to suggest? Thanks, Terry W. Chaffee

Wintersteen family in Springville, Adams Co WI

I have done some research on Jacob Wintersteen and his wife, Hannah Ann Moore, who migrated from Geauga Co OH to Springville Adams Co WI about 1860. They had 15 known children. Some migrated to MN (Clarence and Jacob C) , and Chicago (Ella Shipman and Carrie Ament), but others stayed in Adams Co, WI (Emma Thorne, William, Marietta McCaustland). I am a Haskins researcher not a descendant of this line. My interest in this family was because I believe they descend from William Peter Wintersteen and Lydia Haskins Stevens (buried in Montville, Geauga Co, OH). Lydia was the d/o Moses Stevens and Miriam/Mariam Stevens. Miriam was d/o Lydia Haskins and Elihu Stevens. I would be happy to share any of my research with Wintersteen descendants.

I am researching the family of Atcherson and am the ggggrandaughter of Thomas Atcherson of Saxton's River, Windham County, Vermmont. Thomas, Jr. moved to Plainville, WI and had a son Oscar. From what I understand a bio of Oscar (who was married in Brattleboro, VT) is in a book called "A Memorial and Biographical Record and Illustrated Compendium of Local Biography including Sketches of Hundreds of Prominent Old Settlers and Representative Citizens of Columbia, Sauk and Adams, Counties" ppublished by George A. Ogle in 1901. If someone knows of this family and can add anything I would love to hear from you. I would also like to have a copy of the biography and will be more than happy to reimburse for the copy and postage.
Thank you, Dotty
A. Rous.
Mary and "W" Benedict were listed as witnesses at her wedding.
The 1875 Wisconsin State census list Willis as Head of Household with 3 males and 2 females in the house.

1880 Census finds Mary head of house with Herbert and Lizzie living in Washington State.

I am trying to find who Hannah JOYAL was before she married Jesse SCHOFF. I believe she was married to a Joyal because she is mentioned as Mrs. Hannah Joyal as Jesse's second wife in his death notice. Also a Hiram Joel is listed as Jesse Schoff's stepson in the Springville, Adams Co., census. There is a Hiram Joyal buried in the Plainville Cemetery who was a civil war veteran. Any information on this Joyal family would be greatly appreciated.

From the Adams County Press (Friendship WI), Saturday August 21, 1897, Page 4 Column 1

Albert D. Gray, the young man from Grand Rapids, Wis., who went to Alaska with a party of Wood County friends in April, 1896, returned home last Sunday morning, to spend the winter and return to Alaska in the spring. He and his companion located two claims and he says made big money. They located their claims in October, 1896, but were unable to work them until February, 1897. In an interview in the Milwaukee Sentinel, he says that he advises no one to attempt to make the trip to Klondike before next spring, for it is impossible to make it. He also advises those who go to go well provided with food and money enough to last them one year at least. The coldest weather they had last winter was 72 below and the average winter weather was 40 below. The mosquitoes and gnats were very bad and a great trial to the miners.

Taken from the August 20, 1937 edition of the Adams Advertiser

Thirteen ripe, red tomatoes, in a single cluster, were brought to the Times office early this week by Dan BRANNAMAN as a sample of what can be grown on the sandy soil of Adams county with the proper care and cultivation.
The tomatoes are of an extra early variety developed by Jung, the seed man of Randolph, Wisconsin, and named by him “Way-Ahead.” A remarkable feature of the cluster is the fact that all the 13 tomatoes ripened practically at the same time and while they vary somewhat in size they are pretty much alike. The early varieties of tomatoes are never very large, but these are all of respectable size ranging from about one and one-half inches in diameter to more than two and one-half inches. They were all nice, clean skinned tomatoes, with no speck or spot of scab or rot on their surface.
Dan told the editor there really were 14 tomatoes in the cluster when first sighted but he thoughtlessly picked one off before he realized that the cluster should be gathered intact that others might see what Adams soil can bring forth. He showed the place where the other tomato had been attached.
August WALCZYK made a photograph of the remarkable cluster, a copy of which may be sent to “Believe It or Not” Riply, who should certainly be interested in anything so unusual.

Please note that I am not related to these people and am a volunteer for the Adams board.
Bob
Taken from the August 20, 1937 edition of the Adams Advertiser

Howard HUTCHINSON, 61, a tenant on the farm of Mrs. Lenora KURTH in the town of Easton, died very suddenly Tuesday morning, August 17th 1937, in his home, the cause of death being a heart attack.
Funeral services will be held at the home on the KURTH farm, this afternoon (Friday) with Roseberry brothers directing and Rev. W. J. DAVIES officiating. Burial will be in the cemetery at Plainville.
Mr. HUTCHINSON has been subject to heart trouble for some time but was apparently in his usual state o health up to a very few moments before his death. He arose Tuesday morning and in company with his wife was at the barn doing the chores, the morning milking, etc., when he suddenly complained of a pain in his head. His wife aided him in reaching he houe and after he was seated she sought to telephone for a doctor. Death, however, came before any medical aid could reach him.
Mr. HUTCHINSON has lived on the Kurth farm about three years and prior to that time occupied other farms in other parts of this county. He was born in February, 1876, and therefore was 61 years of age at the time of his death. No particulars of his life history are available at this writing.
His wife was the only member of his family, there being no children. His mother is said to be living in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, at the advanced age of 85 years, but there is no information as to brothers or sisters.

Note: Hutchinson was spelled Hutchenson in the articles title but spelled Hutchinson 3 times in the body of the obituary.

Note: I am not related to any of these people. I am a volunteer for the Adams County board. Thankyou Bob
Taken from the August 20, 1937 issue of the Adams Advertiser (Times)

Bert COON, a old resident of the town of Adams, died Monday, Aug. 16, 1937, at the Adams-Friendship hospital, aged about 62. He underwent surgery the preceding Wednesday for bladder problems and was making a good recovery when complications arose. The cause of death was cerebra embolus (a clot of blood on the brain)
Funeral services were held Wednesday at 2:30 pm in the church at Grand Marsh, with a minister from Madison officiating. Burial was in Rock cemetery near Grand Marsh.
The Times has received no info for an adequate sketch of Mr. COON’s life but has gathered these few facts. He was about 62 years old and leaves a wife and one brother, the latter being Prentiss COON of Port Edwards. He belonged to the Seventh day Adventist church.

Please note that I am not related to these people and am a volunteer for the Adams site.
Thankyou --- Bob Schieber
All his life he has been pecularly sensitive to insect stings which affected him more severely than in the case with most people. When stung Monday he was forced to stop work immediately and one of his coworkers started for a nearby house to get some soda, which is recognized as one of the best (palleitives ?? word is difficult to read) of that sort of injury that death came before relief of any sort could reach him.
Phil HEITMAN was the son of Mr. and Mrs. Charilie Heitman and was some where between 30 and 40 years of age at the time of his death. He was married a few years ago to Miss Nina BYERS, daughter of Mrs. Chris BYERS, and his home was a little west of White Creek in the town of Quincy. He was a world war veteran.
It will be recalled that Monday afternoon brought the most oppressive heat that has been experienced in this section even in this very hot season and there is reason to think that heat prostration may have been a strongly contributing factor in bringing death so quickly after the yellow jacket had done its part.
The funeral is scheduled to be held Thursday afternoon at 2:00 p.m. in the church at White Creek.
The Times has no data from which to prepare in adequate obituary of Mr. HEITMAN, which will have to be deferred to a later issue.

Please note that I am not related to these people and am a volunteer for the Adams site.
Thankyou --- Bob Schieber
Mrs. Hulda Parmelia (Lumbar) Young (Obituary)

This was in the August 20, 1937 issue of the Adams Advertiser

Mrs. Hulda Parmelia Young passed away Sunday, August 15, 1937, at 3:15 a.m. at the home of her daughter, Mrs. S. W. KENYON in Adams. Her age at death was 92 years, 4 months and 20 days. She had been ill for about four months before her death, but had retained her faculties to the very last.
Funeral services were held in the Advent Christian church at Baraboo, of which she had been a member for fifty years, the service being conducted by the pastor, Rev. E. O. COONTS. Burial was made in Walnut Hill cemetery at Baraboo.
Hulda Parmelia LUMBAR was born March 26, 1845, at Moira, Franklin county, New York, where she grew to womanhood. She was married March 19, 1861 to Albert Charles YOUNG. They came to Wisconsin in the year 1865, locating in Prairie du Sac, where they lived until 1883, when they moved to Baraboo where she made her home until 1921, when she came to Adams to live with her daughter, Mrs. KENYON.
Six children were born to Mr. and Mrs. Young---two sons and four daughters. One son and two daughters preceded their mother in death. Two daughters and one son survive: Mrs A. E. CAPENER of Chetek, Wisconsin; Mrs. KENYON, at whose home she died; and Bert YOUNG of Appleton, Minnesota. She is also survived by 12 grandchildren and 29 great-grandchildren.
Up to the very last evening preceding the night of her death, she conversed intelligently with members of her daughter’s family and with callers who came to see her, showing no impairment of her mental faculties. She had many friends in Adams, a number of whom planned and carried out a celebration of her ninety-second birthday anniversary in last March, which she greatly appreciated.
Active and useful as long as health conditions permitted her activities, she made herself a valued member of the home and has well earned the rest that is now hers.
Card of Thanks
We wish to express our gratitude and appreciation to the friends, neighbors, North Western Women’s Club, pall bearers; to those who furnished cars, for the floral expressions of sympathy and to all who assisted us in any way during the illness and death of our dear mother.__Mr. and Mrs. S. W. KENYON; Mr. and Mrs. A. E. CAPENER; Bert YOUNG.

Please note that I am not related to any of these people and am a volunteer for the Adams site. Thankyou.
