I do know that she walked back into NC with the Union Soldiers during the Civil War she was trying to get back home to her father Henry Davis. She did not know her mother's name. She was sold along with her Aunt. She made it as far as Jackson, NC. She eventually settled and married
Luke Squire were they combined there families. If anyone has any info on the Whitfield's black or white I would greatly appreciate your help

I need help!!! I have looking for the death place of Samuel and Sarah/Sallie Oldham for many many years and this has really got me baffled. Is there someone that has acess to Ohio co. WV death records I have dates just not a place.

A family bible has a death date for Sarah/ Sallie Oldham as 23 June 1887, and Samuel Oldham as 24 Dec 1892, but no death place

Here is what I know:
They were in Bellaire, Belmont Co., Ohio in the 1880 census.

On the 19 Jan 1887 Sarah/Sallie Oldham gave birth to Ruth Oldham. According to Ruth's death cert and an obituary in the Coshocton Tribune Nov 19, 1956 she was born in Bellaire, Belmont, OH.

I wrote to Belmont Co with all the death dates and they found nothing but a Samuel Oldham that died December 1, 1891 age 4 months and 5 days.

I checked a cool Belmont site http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~marlaprice... and there was nothing there for my Samuel and Sarah/Sallie Oldham just the Samuel Oldham baby that died Dec 1, 1891.

I checked West Virgina death records at http://pilot.familysearch.org/recordsearch/start.html#p=0 lots of Oldhams but not my Samuel and Sarah/Sallie. I guess that site is not complete.

Some where I got some information about burials in Greenwood Cemetary Block G. Lot 45 a Samuel Oldham date unreadable, a Sarah Oldham 1840 to 1882 and a Archie Infant 1882.

Any one have any ideas? Can anyone help me please before I come to the conclusion they were aliens or they were beamed up by Scottie.

Marcia Rothman mjrothman@comcast.net

THE FIRST SERMON PREACHED AT WHEELING (1772)

By J.H. Newton,
"The first occasion on which the gospel was preached on Wheeling Creek, according to authintic account, was in the summer of 1772 - just two years after the arrival of Ebenezer Zane. The minister was the Rev. David Jones, then residing at Freehold, New Jersey, and who made two visits to the nations of Indians on the west side of the Ohio in the years 1772 and 1773. He kept a journal on his missions, from which we extract the facts here related. After arriving at Fort Pitt, he set out from that place on the 9th of June, 1772, to descend the Ohio in a canoe in company with George Rogers Clark and several others. The first place he mentions after leaving Fort Pitt is "a place called the Mingo town, where some of that nation still reside." He then adds:"Some of this town were wont to plunder canoes, therefore we passed them as quietly as possible, and were so happy as not to be discovered by any of them."
He then descended to Grave Creek, where he met some indians, and from thence to Captina. We quote from his journal as follows:
"Saturday June 13. Moved to a creek, by the Indians called Cappteenin, i.e., Captain's Creek.1 this creek comes into the river from the west side and is suppose to be about seventy-five miles E.S.E. from Newcomerstown, which is the chief town of the Delaware Indians."

Laing and Robb family in Wheeling

Alexander Laing, born Rafford, Morayshire, Scotland 25th June 1824, emigrated to the USA in 1845. In the 1841 UK Census he had been working in a Hardware Store in his native town of Forres. In the 1850 US Census he is in Wheeling, described as a Merchant, and in the 1860 Census he is boarding in the house of Jacob Greer, also a Hardware Merchant. I have seen a reference to a Hardware firm of Greer & Laing in Wheeling.
Meanwhile Alexander's sister Annie, her farmer husband William Robb and their 5 children (four boys and a girl) had also emigrated in 1855 and were farming in Marshall County, where a fifth son, Henry Charles Robb was born in 1857. However, when their 7th child and 6th son Richard was born in 1863 the Robb family and Alexander Laing had moved into 104, 14th. Street in Wheeling together and Annie was her brother's housekeeper. This lasted until 1894 when Annie died and her only daughter Isabella Robb took over as Housekeeper.
Alexander Laing died in 1907, still unmarried, and clearly Isabella inherited 104, 14th St. as she was still living there when she died aged 87, also still unmarried, in 1938. Her brother Henry, who was the last survivor of Alexander's nephews and nieces, was still living there then but when he died, also unmarried, aged 94 in 1951 his residence on his Certificate of Death is the McLure Hotel, Wheeling. The Informant was his nephew Harry M. Robb who had a Jewellery Store in Wheeling.
Any information on Alexander and the Robb family, or the firm of Greer & Laing, or the property at 104, 14th St. would be very welcome. Photographs would be an unexpected bonus. Many thanks, Alastair MacDonald

I have found where there is a highway historical marker on Route 2 near the town of McMechen...is that the spot where it occured, or is it simply *near* the spot?

My children and I are descendants of John Wilson (1756-1827) who was a survivor of the ambush, and I would like to take them to the exact location of the ambush (if possible) and see the hillside that the survivors climbed to escape the ambush.

I appreciate any clues that can bring me closer to the site of the tragedy. Thanks!

The Utermohlen family, esp. William (b. 1852)

I am interested in finding more information concerning William Utermohlen (or Uttermohlen, and, in the case of the 1910 census, Otermoklen), and his family, esp. his older children and his own parents.

This is what I have so far: William was born in 1852 in Germany, but came to the US in 1853. I have not found out who brought him here. According to my own parents and grandparents, he went to Wheeling, Ohio, West Virgina and stayed there his whole life. I was unable to find any record of him until 1910, however.

He married a Rose (who was of Irish origin) and, according to my own family, had 12 children. I have only found record of the youngest five, and possibly a sixth: an Edward b. 1878 (he is an iffy, I'm not sure about him, but my father thinks he is one of William's children), an Agnes b. 1878, a Frank b. 1884, a Raymond b. 1889, a Lels b. 1893, and an Isabel b. 1894. Frank is my great-grandfather, but I wish to know more about his siblings, especially the elder ones that I was not able to find. All of these children were listed in the 1910 census, and Edward was listed as a man with his own family, but he was living in the same area in Wheeling at the time. William supposedly had 10 boys and 2 girls, so the missing 4 children would be boys, most likely sharing the Utermohlen name, or some variation of it. I am thinking that they may have died earlier on, but I am not at all sure.

As for William's possible parents, all I have come up with is an Anna Uttermuhle, who was b. 1830, came from Schonhagen, arrived on the 29 Jun 1857, in Baltimore, departed from Bremen, and, most importantly, her destination was Wheeling. I have also come up with a Friederike Utermohle, who came to America in 1853.

If anyone can help fill in any of these blanks, esp. the one concerning William's parentage, I would be most appreciative. If you wish to email me, my email is ainu_laire at yahoo dot com.

Thanks,
Suvi

There is a Joshua Hunter in the 1830 Wheeling, Virginia census that may be related to a Thomas Benteen Hunter, born 1842 possibly in Wheeling or in St. Louis Missouri. His siblings include John born 1828,and Nelson born 1830, both in Virginia and West Virginia according to different census records. I am looking to make a connection to Joshua and strongly suspect that he may be the father of these Hunter boys because his census tally closely matches the ages of the children born.

If anyone in that area can find any links to show he was there anytime between 1837 & 1870, please help.

Also, if a person was born over the West Virginis state line in to Pa, what would be the closest town to Wheeling to look for birth records.

Seeking parents of John Calvin Terrell. Jared Terrell (1744-1791) who migrated to Ohio County before 1790 was John's grandfather. But which of Jared's many sons was his father, I do not know. Only the sons Daniel, Abner, and Elli were in the 1810 census, but the data does not support a son of John's age living at those households. John may have left home by then or else was the son of another of Jared's sons. John enllisted in the Army at Wheelling during the War of 1812 serving in the 12th US Infantry John's mother may have been a Calvin. John migrated to Ohio and later Indiana..
Civil War Vet Daniel Whitehead and the Wheeling connection of the Whitehead, Wood and Taylor families

Daniel Whitehead was a Union Civil War Vet and a successful business man in post- war Wheeling, West Virginia. He was famous enough to make the Wheeling 'who's who' in the History Of The Upper Ohio Valley Volume I (Brant and Fuller 1880, pages 477- 478). He was married to Hannah Wood. They were originally from the greater Manchester area of England and immigrated to Wheeling in the mid 1800s, just prior to the war. Hannah was from the Joseph Wood family of Slaithwaite, England and had at least three brothers: Thomas, Hiram and George Wood. A pretty decent ancestry snapshot for the Whiteheads and Woods can be found in the 1851 and 1861 England censuses.

All three of the Wood brothers also came to Wheeling at about the same time as Daniel and Hannah. Daniel and Hannah settled in Wheeling. Hiram also settled in Wheeling (Fulton area). Thomas moved to Martins Ferry, Ohio and eventually on down to Moundsville, West Virginia. George Wood stayed a short time in Wheeling and then moved on to Lancaster, Ohio and beyond. I'm from Hiram's bloodline. A great many of the Wood families from Ohio and Marshall counties in West Virginia are descended from either Thomas or Hiram Wood.

Before leaving England, Thomas Wood married Jane Taylor and Hiram Wood married her sister Anna Taylor. The Taylors were from the Matthew Taylor family of Denton, England. Jane and Anne had brothers who also immigrated to the Wheeling area. So, if you're an Ohio Valley Taylor or a Wood, its very possible that you're related.

I'm researching the parents of Hannah, Thomas, Hiram and George. Their father was Joseph Wood (1798 - ????). Mother was Hannah Wood (1799 - ????). Desperately seeking Hannah's maiden name (or any other possible info on Joseph, Hannah or anyone else in this family tree).

Possible Wheeling area surname links: Whitehead, Wood, Taylor, Bartens, Greskevitch, Izso, Tyska

Wayne (Chip) Wood
Edward Finlay (Finley) .......England to Ohio, WV or Pa in mid 1800s

Looking or any possible ancestor links to my great, great, great grandfather Edward Finlay. He was born in 1817 in England. Think I have him on a passenger list from England to Philly in 1840. Not found in 1850 or 1860 England or USA censuses. Have positive ID starting in 1865 with marriage to Mariah Walker in Belmont, Ohio. She was from Pa, Ohio or WV (depending on which children's death cert or census report you want to believe). Edward seems to have been a coal miner who showed up in 1870 Warrensburg, Mo and 1880 Wheeling, WV censuses. Children: Amilia (Finley) Garrett (1848-1938 Wheeling, WV), William Finley b 1851 and Elizabeth (Finley) Bauer (1858-1929 Wheeling, WV). Edward died in Wheeling in 1851 and is buried in the James Garrett burial plot at Pennisula Cemetery in Wheeling. Any help would be appreciated.

Wayne (Chip) Wood
(From Goosetown, Alley H, 16 St and Fulton)

Let
him know that you do not want the Archives Search Room moved across the
hall. Tell him that you don't need a cafe or a gift shop in the
Cultural Center. We need the Museum put back into the basement, more money
and equipment for the search room, and the Gag Orders placed on state
employees removed.

It is unbelievable that State Employees are not allowed to voice a
public opinion nor make any comment to the press. I thought that was what
our Veterans had fought Wars over & to protect our right of Free
Speech. In order to work for the State of West Virginia, Joe Manchin
requires you to leave the Bill of Rights in storage, before you can work for
the state.

Joe Manchin believes that we need a gift shop and a cafe in the
Cultural Center. Then he will be able to have dancing in the Great Hall of
the Cultural Center and then have an elegant banquet in the Cafe. This
recalls the story of Queen Marie Antoinette of France. Her people were
starving and crying out for bread, her answer was "Let them eat cake."
Marie was missing the point. They had no bread, they had no cake.

We have something important in our Archives, we have the history of the
State of West Virginia. We have the original rosters from the Civil
War, we have microfilm records of births, deaths, marriages, etc. We
have thousands of books on family, county, and state history. And
that's just part of it.

In moving the State Archives Search Room from the location purposely
designed for it by a trained architect and cramming it into the Library
Commission Lending Library you are conveying the idea to me that what it
contains isn't worth keeping nice. That it's o.k. to introduce food
into an archival building. It isn't. The architect said so when he
built it without the cafe. Food brings vermin, bugs, rats, nasty things.
These eat books, they lick the ink right off the original records
that are stored in the building.

Putting a lending library with a non-lending archival library? How
smart is that? The books that are loaned are exposed to everything
outside of the Cultural Center and returned onto the shelves: chemicals,
contaminants, and etc. All mixed in with the books that we should be
trying to maintain in the cleanest environment possible. Bad idea.

We lost a champion on November 1, 2007 in our Archives Director Fred
Armstrong who was summarily fired as he served at the Will and Pleasure
of the Governor. The Governor was no longer pleased and Fred Armstrong
was no longer employed. Fred played the game that the Governor
wanted. He didn't gossip about the combination of the libraries, he did
his work and he did it very well. When I was called and told he had
been fired, I said "Well, that makes sense.
Obituary Help Needed - Edgar H. Babb

I'm hoping that someone may be able to help me obtain the obituary for an Edgar H. Babb who died January 8, 2006. I found a death notice listed in the Wheeling, WV and Martin's Ferry, Ohio newspapers - but I haven't found his obituary. I'm trying to find out his parentage to see if he's related to my husband's Babb line. We were on vacation and saw Edgar's grave in Seceder Cemetery in Mt. Pleasant, Jefferson County, Ohio. My husband's Babb line is from that area - for over 200 years - and there's a possibility that there's a connection somewhere. Access to other records hasn't shown Edgar's parents so I hit a roadblock. Hope someone can help. :-)

Wheeling, Ohio County Marriages 1919-1920

Can anyone point me to where I can look to find a marriage for a couple who might have been married in late 1919 or early 1920? I have a strong belief that they were married at Saint Vincent de Paul, but due to lack of staffing, can't seem to get a copy of any marriage information. Vital Stats come back empty.

I'm looking for a Charles Arthur Walt, Sr. who shows up married to Florence Madelyn Bleifus in the 1920 census that was taken Jan 4th, 1920. They were living with his parents. She was born Oct 18, 1920 and would have just turn 17 three months before the census.

I'm guessing they were married sometime between Oct 1919 and Jan 1920, but don't know where to look to find the information.

Any suggestions??? This one is driving me CRAZY! :-)

Church confusion - St. Paul's Evan/UCC and St. Stephens UCC

I feel really stupid but I'm getting these confused. My grand and great grandparents were either married/attended and had funerals in these two churches early 1900s.
I think St. Stephen's is still standing at 37th and Jacob Sts. I believe St. Paul's was at 3741 Wood St. but I believe that is where Rithie School is located (when I look at Google maps). Did the churches merge back? I think I've read that St. Stephen's came out of St. Paul's around 1875 but guess I'm getting lost when I read about two separate buildings/congregations. Can someone help my brain? This 100 degree heat in Atlanta is getting to me! Kim in GA.

White family from Ohio County/Wheeling area

I am seeking information on my gggg grandparents, John and Elizabeth White. I have recently received a copy of the will for John White who died in Jan or Feb of 1831 thanks to the kindness of another genealogy buff. What I am now trying to find out is the burial place and grave stone inscriptions for John and Elizabeth. John and Elizabeth's son, Thomas, born about 1795, (married Agnes McConnell in 1817) is my ggg grandfather. He and his family moved to Muskingum, OH in the mid to late 1830's.

All I really know about John and Elizabeth is they were supposedly married in the Blockhouse at Wheeling where they had gone for protection from an Indian attack--no year, but possibly early 1780's. Elizabeth's surname I believe to be Hosack.

If anyone has access to cemetery records (no idea of what cemetery), marriage records pre 1790, and birth records pre 1800, I would appreciate the help. Thank you very much.

Ernie Lunsford
Olathe, KS

Iwan SOCHA was supposedly born ca 1888 in Piskorowice, Jaroslaw, Galicia (Austria/Poland etc) of Ruthenian background. He came to the USA in November 1905 to visit his sister Marya SOCHA in Bridgeport/Norristown, Pennsylvania. Family lore says he died at age 20 in Wheeling, West Virginia, which would put his death around 1908. Religious background was Greek Orthodox, I think. He may have been living with, or located near relatives named KOHUT/KOGUT, KORSZNIAK, or RAFA/RAFFA living in Wheeling. Any information on his death or burial would be helpful, or any information on any of the named families would also help. Thanks! -- Gail Kreyns

I am trying to find the parents of Elmer Elwood Soles who lived on Grandview Street in Wheeling for many years. He was born May 25,1887 in Witten, Monroe County, Ohio. I grew up hearing he was my uncle, but I can not find him listed in my grandmothers family. I do not have access to the 1900, 1910 or 1920 census.I find him in the 1930 census and he is living in Wheeling and on Grandview Street. I believe his wife's name was Laura. My grandmother Julia Anna (Annie) Soles Conley (Eugene Conley)also lived on Grandview Street. She was the daughter of Jarret and Christina Leasure Soles of Monroe County, Ohio. She had two brothes, Ed and Jim, and I always thought Jim and Elmer were the same person but all three are in the 1930 census so now my curiosity is getting the best of me!! ANY help would be appreciated.

I find them living as husband and wife with his parents Joseph and Emma in the 1920 census. She would have been 17 years so I'm guessing they were married in 1919 or 1920.

Cna anyone give me some help as to where I can look for this record? I wrote to the state in the late 80s, but they came back with no record found.

Does anyone have any suggestions as to how I could proceed? Thanks.
Mysterious Death of Stephen Thaddeus Debolt in 1936 in Wheeling

Hello, I have been researching my great-uncle's death that occured in Wheeling March 19, 1936. His name is Stephen Thaddeus Debolt. According to newspaper accounts, he was found passed out on Chapline Street in Alley 14. He was arrested and charged with drunkeness and sentenced with 10 days in prison. The articles go on to say that he never regained consciouisness and was transferred the next day to Ohio Valley General Hospital where he died.

The family lore is that he was killed by the mafia an I have had others tell me that the mafia was very much alive and well in Wheeling during this time.

Stephen was a World War I Veteran of the 80th Division and was carrying his honorable discharge papers at the time of his death. He also worked at the Yorkville Mill as a "roller".

I am seeking any information at all about this. If there is someone on the list that can tell me anything about Chapline Street, Alley 14, Yorkville Mill, etc. I would love to know about it.

According to his death certificate there was an autopsy performed. Can anyone tell me where I would write to get a copy of this record?

Thanks in advance for your help.

In Christ,
Melissa Barker

Our WV Mesecher line--Messecher, Messacre, Messeker, Messcerr.

Nicholas Messecher b: abt. 1770, d: abt. 1825 Ohio County, VA (now Marshall County, WV).
Nicholas Messcerr appears in the Ohio County, VA census index.
Nicholas came to Ohio County (now Marshall County, WV) with his wife Mary Slaght Messcerr about 1795 from Sussex County, New Jersey, owned land,100 acres on Steels Run and 147 acres on Wheeling Creek. Nicholas and Mary raised a family of seven. Nicholas died about 1825 and his widow, Mary married David Rush. David Rush purchased part or all of land of Nicholas prior to the death of Nicholas.
Does some map or desciption exist that might describe the property of Nicholas? Was Nicholas ever an heir of a parent? Is there written record that might tell more of the life, worship, and civic activity of Nicholas and Mary Messeker?
Answers to these questions may assist in finding Nicholas' life story and parents. I am seeking a researcher familiar with the locality and with access to information.

Dennis Mesecher
I am looking for information about a Hugh I. Roberts married to a Louise D. They had four children and their names are Arthur A., Mary A., Catharine I., and Hugh T., Roberts. The brother of Hugh I. Roberts is William S. All other information I have is that Hugh T. married Mary McRoberts and had I think four children one of whom is Frank Roberts my Grandfather. I know that the children were born in West Virgina...in Wheeling. Hugh T. grew up to be a doctor. And that is about all I know. Any information or helpful hints would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

Women Prisoners in 1910?

I am trying to find out where female prisoners would have been placed in 1910. Was Moundsville a site for female prisoners convicted of a federal crime (murder)? Were there other prisons in WV in that time period that would have taken female prisoners?
I am looking for a Susan Nolan who killed her husband James sometime between 1900 and 1910. In 1900 the family is living in Parkersburg WV. By 1910 one daughter is a servent in a home in Wheeling and another daughter is in the children's home of Wheeling.
Any help would be appreciated.

Colvin Family Tree

If any one at all can help me I would be forever grateful. I am trying to find my Father in-laws family tree, as a surprize! I have the living family and Michael Colvin's mothers side almost dating back to the 1700's. I am really in need of any help or information that any one can provide me with on the Colvin family. I am currently stuck at Clarence S. Colvin who married Bessie Winland and Louis E. Colvin. The Colvin family doesn't know a lot about their family. I do know that the family is orginally from Germany/Ireland. I know that they mainly lived in the Ohio, West Virginia area. If anyone has any information no matter how big or small I would be forever thankful.

I have a map of Wheeling from 1877 and have found that the street names from earlier city directories do not match. I'm assuming the street names changed at some point but I'm not sure when. Does anyone know when they might have changed and if there is someplace that describes the old and new street names?

thanks, Joyce

I need any information that anyone has on my grandfather, Harold Robert Earp. I know virtually nothing about him, when or where he was born, although I think he was born in West Virginia. I know he did marry my grandmother, Alma Cox in W.Va., but don't know when they were divorced. Although my uncle was born in 1921 and mother was born in 1925. My mother has no real memory of him.

I will be in Wheeling next month and can do whatever work is necessary then, but I would like to have something to start with.

I would appreciate any help from anyone.

Thank you,

Sally Reynolds
j_sreyno@texas.net
Austin, Texas
Austin, Texas
