Dear Dave -- I don't have a map but I know that Mt. Zion is south of Rt 470 going toward McMechan. If you Google it you will find it. If you go there and you see any Bryson graves, I would be interested in photos. My family is Olsen, Bryson, Nickerson, Dehmel, Faris. My mother and I visited Greenwood Cemetery last year but we did not have time to go to Mt. Zion. Good luck finding your family!
Thanks.
Cheryl Barr
cbarr95@comcast.net

Can anyone tell me if a map of Mount Zion Cemetery is available that could be mailed or emailed to me? I will be passing through the area on Saturday 24 March from western Ohio. I hope to take photos of grave stones. I am looking for Marshall's, Broemsen's and Schlicher's. I also see that there are 6 Photo Requests on findagrave.com that I will try to take care of. I called the phone number that is listed for the cemetery, but the person that I talked to acted like she did not understand what I need.

Thank you!
Dave Marshall

My 93 year old grandmother is insisting that she has second cousins in Wheeling- or did as they're likely all deceased. Apparently there were four people that my great-grandmother went to visit who were cousins to my great-grandfather. My grandmother and siblings would send my great-grandmother on the train from Pittsburgh to Wheeling so that they could have bathtub gin parties during prohibition.

They were Robert, Ann, Tillie and Jane and my grandmother is insisting that they were all Gallaghers. Apparently Robert and one of the ladies lived in one house and the other ladies lived in the house next door. We think that Robert's father might also have been Robert and that the senior Robert was from Mountcharles, Donegal, Ireland and was the brother or cousin or something to my great-great grandfather James Gallagher.

I can't find anything on the census data.

any help would be greatly appreciated!

Jennifer Hussey

Some of those facts are incorrect. My grandfather Edward Vincent was born in approx 1910ish and died in 1976ish. I will have to check the facts. According to you records he died before my father was even born.

I am finding cousins from those 12 kids on facebook. One just sent me a Obit and photos of Mary Ann Gillies Utermohlen (my great grandmother) who passed away in 1947 at 98 years old.

Attached are some photos I can across. The group photo is the clan of 12 kids you mentioned. One is my grandfather edward Vincent Uttermohlen ( one of the brothers added a T to the last name). The older woman in the other photos is Mary Ann Gillies Utermohlen.

With poor census records and nicknames even I have trouble keeping these relatives straight.

Mary Lou Uttermohlen

My husband inherited an old wooden box containing some military memorabelia from his grandmother who died in Wheeling in the 1970's. It was painted brown and sat in our attic for years. Then our daughter took it to her house and put it on her porch to use as an end table. Over the years, the paint has worn away, and we can see the words, Schmibach or Schmihbach Brewing Co. Wheeling, WV written on both end boards. Does anyone have any information on this brewery?

Robert and Mary McClure had a son Abdiel born
September 11 1815 and died in 1881.I know that sometime after my great great
Grandparents were married the McClures left western Pennsylvania and moved to Wheeling. Also,I have the McClure name spelled both ways in my information.Which is the correct way to spell the name?
Rich

Thanks for the reply. This Abdial McLure/McClure, was b. abt. 1895 Va (according to census records) and d. June 8, 1851 (probably in Moundsville). He married Malissa Boone Jan 20, 1828 in Ohio Co., Va. She died Mar 1879 in Moundsville. These dates are from a Boone family bible that my daughter's husbands' family had. Abdial and Malissa are on the 1850, 1860 Ohio Co. census and the 1870 Marshall Co. Va. census. Any light you can shed on this Abdial would be appreciated and I will gladly share what info I have with you.

I have seen the spelling both ways, McClure and McLure. I would look for both spellings. Are you familiar with the Abdial I am looking for at all? Also, on the 1870 Ohio Co., W.Va. census, Lydia Talbott is living with a Sarah Marshall. On the 1860 Ohio co., Va. census, the same Sarah Marshall is living with a Samuel McLure (age. 82 b. Ireland), Richard McLure (age 86 b. Ireland) his wife Eliza M. (age 62 b. Pa) and their son Andrew F. (age 22 b. Va). Lydia Talbott was the wife of Richard, their daughter Pleasant married Humphrey Boone (also seen as Boon). Are any of these people familiar to you?

West Virginia Archives Library to Close June 8-19, 2009

The West Virginia Archives and History Library Reading Room in the Cultural Center on the Capitol Complex in Charleston, WV, is scheduled to close June 8 through June 19, 2009, for painting and for installation of new carpet and window blinds. A bank of lockers and a restroom for Library patron use will also be installed outside the Library entrance door. The Archives and History Library staff will be available for telephone and e-mail consultation during this time. Keep an eye on our Web site at http://www.wvculture.org and your local media for announcements. Plans are subject to change. Particularly if you are making a special trip or traveling a distance to visit us around these dates, we urge you to call us at (304) 562-0230 before coming to ensure that the Library will be open to serve you that day.

The addition of the lockers will allow some changes in Reading Room usage policies for the greater security and preservation of West Virginia Archives and History Library collections. As in most archival libraries, patrons will be required to leave personal items in lockers while researching in the Reading Room. Patrons will also be requested to wash their hands in the adjacent new rest room before handling collections. Once the new policies have been finalized, they will be posted on our Web site, http://www.wvculture.org/history, and published in Archives and History News.
I recently found info that suggests one of our ancestors was "bound out" to a dressmaker in Wheeling after her mother died abt 1836. Can anyone tell me if records for these contracts are likely to exist and if so, where?

Also any insight anyone can give me into this process would be interesting. Is it the same as indenture or different? And how common under these circumstances...(She was about 7 at the time, her father was still alive, but there were many children and a couple of her siblings may also have been bound out at the same time.) Thanks!

Although transcribed as Lazarus in 1830 and 1840, in 1850 he's listed as Lazerous, and indexed on Ancestry.com as Laverous.

I'm attempting to determine whether, and if so how, he was related to the Hays/Gratz/Myers/Mordecai families of Philadelphia.
Early Brandon and Campbell Photos

I have come into possession of a book of old pictures of early Campbell and Brandon family members. I believe the families were from the Southwest Pennsylvania/West Virginia Panhandle area. I have scanned and posted them at

www.flickr.com/photos/thedunker

Go to that web page and click on SETS to view or download the pictures.

Labels on the photos are from the description on the reverse of each photo.

Mr. and Mrs. William and Lillian Doyle

For anyone that this may help, I've discovered a bible belonging to a branch of my Williams/Diamond family. In it was this little blurb in the DEATHS section. It would either be pertaining to Pennsylvania or West Virginia as that is where my branch was from. Not sure of the relation to my family. Most likely West Virginia though:

Mrs. Lillian Doyle wife of
William Doyle Died at City
Hospital May 19, 1911 and was
Burried May 22, 1911 at
Greenwood Cemetery. Age 55.

Re: How do I find W. Va. marriages?

If you haven't already resolved this, try pilot.familysearch.org. They have indexed West Virginia Marriages 1853-1970...although technically (read "About this collection") they cover from 1780-1970.

Also, depending upon where they lived, some folks went over to Maryland (Oakland, Garrett County, Maryland for my line) because the laws there did not require testing prior to marriage. (At least in 1920s)

Hope this helps.
