I just came across your post. This is not my Utermohlen family, although it may be related to it, as the family comes from Schoenhagen, Germany, where my family also lived for a time. See http://members.cox.net/autermohlen/Schoenhagen.htm. Indeed, there seem to be a number of families that came from that village to Wheeling.
I have the William Utermohlen family as follows:
William Utermohlen (1851-1915), who settled in Wheeling in the 1870s, and his wife Mary Ann Gillies had a large family:
1. Margaret (1875-1901)
2. Edward Vincent (1877-1938)
3. William (1879)
4. Francis (1881)
5. Joseph (1882-1888)
6. Mary Agnes (1887)
7. James Raymond (1884-1963)
8. Charles Leo (1891-1944)
9. Rose Isabelle (1894)
William came to the United States in 1859 with his brother Conrad (who also came to Wheeling), a sister, and his mother Friederike (Brandt) Utermohlen.
His birth record in Germany is as follows:
Wilhelm Friedrich Carl Utermöhlen
* 6 Dec 1851 (Schönhagen Baptisms 1851 page 302 no. 72)
Parents: blacksmith Conrad Utermöhlen and his wife Friederike born Brandt
Godparents: coachmaker Wilhelm Utermöhlen at Hildesheim, publican Friedrich
Steingräber and miller Carl Schmidtmann
His father died in 1858, the year before the family emigrated to the United States:
This blacksmith whose full name was Franz Christian Conrad Utermöhlen, died
in 1858 on 2 January, and was buried on 5 January (Schönhagen Burials 1858
page 40 no. 1). He was 61 years 11 months and 2 days old. His parents had
been blacksmith Johann Conrad Utermöhlen from Schorborn and his wife Louise
born Diekmann.
Please feel free to contact me for more information. I am interested in all the Utermohlen families and would like to know more about your branch of the family.
