CIRCLEVILLE: Howard L. "Bud" Burroughs, 70, of Circleville, Ohio died April 10, 2013 at Adena Hospital.

He was born January 30, 1943 in Parkersburg, West Virginia the son of Charles and Thelma (Hamilton) Burroughs.

He was a U.S. Navy veteran of Vietnam War.

He was preceded in death by his parents, sisters, Mary McCoy and Becki Olar and brother, Jeffery Burroughs.

Bud is survived by his wife, Beverly Ann (Dearth) Burroughs; children, Scott, Teri and Becki Burroughs, Michelle Barber, Mike, Craig and Eric Likens; grandchildren, Stephen, April, Noah, Britany, Dustin, Cierra, Mikey, Liam, Trinety, Kaya, Kenleigh and Kamden; sister, Pam Bobo and brothers, Gary, Mike and Bill Burroughs.

Funeral service will be held 2:00 p.m. Saturday, April 13, 2013 at Wellman Funeral Home, Circleville, Ohio.
Friends may call from 4-7 p.m. Friday.

I have a Dotson relative (Robert Dotson d.Aug 1873 s/o Elisha and Ingaba Lowther Dotson) buried in the Sheets / Gilpin Cemetery on Middle Fork Creek Rd in Belleville, Wood Co, WV. I'm trying to learn more about the Gilpin family of Wood County in hopes of finding more info on the cemetery and their link to the Dotson family. I believe I may have other relatives buried there. Any info would be greatly appreciated!

The marriage records are readable online (WVculture.org). One of them looks to be Mary Miers but on same record there is a hand written statement showing marriage to Polly Myers. On the other record the name is spelled Mary Mires.

I believe that Harrison County, WV records show that Henry Congrove married Mary Mines on 30 August 1827 (marriage book 3, page 38).

Can someone confirm if her maiden names was "Meir" or "Mines"?

The only children I have for Henry and probably Mary Mier are Albert G b.about 1830 VA d. 1908 Belleville, Wood, WV. Buried Old Belleville Cemetery also known as Humphrey Cemetery. Married Mary Claresa White b. 1812 WV d. 1900 Belleville, Wood, WV. Mary previously married to Robert Flinn.
Abram (my great-great Grandfather) b Aug 19 1836, WV d June 3 1905, WV. Married Sarah Elizabeth Coleman Jan 14, 1863. They had 4 children.
George b 1838 also on 1850 Census. I do not have further research on George.
Other children may be female? It is hard to know as Henry does not appear on a census as a head of household after his marriage and prior to 1850.
I also had Isaac b.1837 according to info I originally had (age 13 in 1850), but recently found a grave photo with his b. 1841 d. 1920. Looks like he is child of Rebecca not Mary.
Henry remarried Rebecca Taylor May 5, 1840.

SSG Bill C. Anderson, 59, of Parkersburg, died on Monday, October 8, 2012 at his home.
He was born in Parkersburg, October 15, 1952 to the late Jack and Zollie Thompson Anderson.

Bill proudly retired from the West Virginia Army National Guard after serving for 31 years. He also worked as a Pipefitter for Union Local #565.
He enjoyed hunting, fishing, riding his Harley and driving his Camaro, and fixing old farm machinery.

He is survived by one sister, Peggie Lawrentz (Charlie) of Mineral Wells, West Virginia; one brother, Larry Anderson (Jane) of Walker, WV; one niece and three nephews, John Lawrentz of Vincent, OHIO, Jason Lawrentz (Danielle) of Superior, CO, Abby Bryan (Patrick) of Parkersburg, and Jesse L. Anderson of Lafayette, CO; and one great niece and five nephews, Seth, Landon, and Asher Bryan and Tyler, Trent, and Reagan Lawrentz.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by two sisters, Rebecca Ellen and Susan Elaine.

The funeral service will be Saturday, October 13, at 11:00 AM at Leavitt Funeral Home, Parkersburg.
Burial will follow the service at the family's private cemetery. Visitation will be Friday, October 12, from 2-4 and 6-8 PM at the funeral home.

Lena J. Carter was born September 22, 1951, to Earl and Lena Fitzgerald in Parkersburg, West Virginia.

Later in childhood, Lena and her family moved to Columbus, Ohio, where she attended school in the Columbus School System and graduated from East High School in 1971. She was employed by the State of Ohio for 30 years before retiring in 2010.

Lena was a devoted wife to Gary Carter for 40 years, having met during their teenage years.

Lena was an avid reader, always carrying a book with her. She also enjoyed traveling, shopping and spending time with family
Lena was often relied upon for her strength and unwavering support. Her home served as the hub for family gatherings that she organized and hosted.

Lena was a member of Christ Memorial Missionary Baptist Church for many years.
She served on the Usher Board, the Women’s Fellowship Committee, and volunteered her services.

Lena went home to be with the Lord on Saturday, September 8, 2012 at the age of 60 years old. She was preceded in death by her parents, Earl and Lena, brother Earl Fitzgerald, Jr., and sisters Charlotte Brydie and Mary Louise Williams.

I had my DNA tested and I was interested to see if I had any Native American blood because my uncle (Bob Stephens) was told we did. Alas, no such blood.

My grandma was Lucille Stevens, daughter of William Madison Stevens, son of William P Stevens (b 1855) - born in Washington County, Ohio (Belpre). He had a sister Mary Jane Stephens (b 1852), on whose death certificate lister her as born in Marietta, Washington, Ohio. On William P Stevens death certificate was listed his father as William. So that much I have paper trail "certainty."

For the time frame and location, I have only found a William Stephens in Belpre in the 1850 census living with his father Hanson Stephens. I've been documenting every Stephens/Stevens I can find in the area at the time and this seems to be a pretty solid link.

Question though. My grandma said the Stephens family had Indian ancestry. Has anyone else heard of this? She was adamant about this.

Though I did get my AncestryDNA test back recently and the percentage of my DNA that could be Native American is only 4% - so it would have to be back around the mid to late 1700's at the earliest.

I certainly would like to exchange info. Unfortunately my grandfather Stephens died in 1980 before I got into the genealogy much, so I didn't take the opportunity to discuss the Stephens family with him. He knew quite a bit about his family. One thing my father seems to think is that grandpa always said that the Stephens family came from the Winchester, Va. area. That would make sense as far as my g-g-g-g grandfather, Thomas Stephens born @1767 in Maryland and died 1853 in Wood County. However, perhaps the John Stephens who died in Fayette Co., PA was in the VA/MD area before he relocated to Fayette Co. Very puzzling. Have you or any of the men submitted DNA info? My father, who is a Stephens, did submit a DNA sample, but we haven't received any close matches yet. It would be great if any of the researchers with the Stephens last name could do so to see if there is a recent match.

I did the research back to William Stephens, Sr. Beyond that, I have relied on fellow Stephen's researchers.

I agree, the Stephens line is a bit challenging to follow especially since the early vital records in WVa. were destroyed by fire.

Fellow Stephens researcher Wayne Lee believes his John C. Stephens is the brother of my William Stephens Sr. If this proves correct then we move back from brothers John and William to their father, Thomas who's father was John who's father was Evan. And here we are.

I also received information from a gal by the name of Elsie who had reference books she used to document my line to William Sr. This was over 10 years ago so I'm lite on details.

Elijah, John, and Hugh Phelps Descendants

Wood County histories state that Elijah and John Phelps left many descendants in Wood County. I am unable to find any documentation linking descendants to either Elijah or John. Their brother Hugh Phelps's descendants are well documented.
Phelps & Servin in Phelps Families in America gives some lineages but provides no documentation. Specific birth and death dates suggest the existence of family Bible records but I know of none.
Any suggestions will be appreciated as I'm trying to sort and identify all of the pre-Civil War Phelps's in Wood County.

i am looking for info or relatives of thomas franklin[frank] lewis. born, april 8th,1884, in wood county, wv. youngest child of thomas lewis,1831-? and elizabeth mcjilton or macgilton? 1845-1935. frank passed away march 30, 1944, newell, wv. his first marriage was to jessy henry, had daughter, pansy isia, lived in wood county. after jessy's death he moved to the newell,wv area, and married sarah delong. they had two daughters, bertie and marjorie. pansy isia died at the age of 12. he was a conductor for the streetcar in newell, wv for yrs.

thomas lewis and elizabeth were both from ohio. settled in washington, wood countywv. area. they had 7 children; theadore,hannah,emma,sarah, harriet[married a beebout], william warren[went by warren] [married florence spencer] and last was thomas franklin lewis.

having a hard time tracing thomas and elizabeth's beginnings. also by 1900 census thomas was gone? just elizabeth, warren and frank left at home.
marjorie lewis was my mother-inlaw.

Obtaining obituaries on the most recent deaths could give you a lead on current family members.

I found that Charles Tracewell Flinn lived to be 86. He died March 15, 1956 in Hempfield, Westmoreland county, Pennsylvania. He moved in with his son Brigadier Bernard E. Flinn of the Salvation Army sometime after his wife died in 1934.

I would like to know if anyone has any information at all regarding Josephus and Sarah Drummond or Sheridan and May Drummond. They are my great grandparents as well as my great great grandparents. I have never met anyone from this side of my family... ever! I am desperate to connect with this side of my family and feel closer to a grandfather that I never met. Any help in this direction would be appreciated! Thank you!

If you contact the Parkersburg Wood County Public Library, they have obituary and newspaper references. I contacted them recently and they were very helpful. They charge a minimal fee for looking up obituaries. woodgenealogy@park.lib.wv.us is the email address.

I would add a daughter to John Sutherland's and Nancy Foley's children:

Letitia, Lettuce or Lethee Sutherland, born 14 July 1801 in Wood, VA.

She married Hiram George Suiter in 1 April 1816 in Wood, VA. they had two children.

After Hiram died, she married Daniel Sparling 28 Aug 1828 in Lawrence, Ohio. They had six children.

The marriage record for her and Hiram Suiter is posted on ancestry.com. The second marriage record can be found at Familysearch.org.

I am searching for the obituary and/or cemetery where Juanita and her husband Harold Nelson Hilton are buried.

Juanita died 3 Jan 1977 in Parkersburg and Harold died 19 Jan 1976.

Hi, I am Wayne Amos and i knew Roxie pretty well. My grandmother (Nettie) and she were sisters. I can remember as a youngster visiting Roxie and Denny in Beverly. I have done some genealogy on the Full family. My great grand father, Obe, Roxies father, lived with us for a while before he died in 1958. Would like to hear from you. I think we are great cousins

Thanks. I will check on that Charles Flinn. I discovered that you can slowly search the PA death indices for all deaths in PA that are 50 years or more in the past. I managed to find the correct Anna Flinn who died August 6, 1934 but I haven't found her burial yet. Their youngest surviving child, Dorothy Helen was married in 1934 just before her mother's death so perhaps Charles died in April as you mention.
