He (and maybe she) is buried in Parkersburg Memorial Cemetery (the old I.O.O.F. cemetery), but it is a large one and I am not sure where they might be buried. Does anyone have a book that shows grave locations?

Kenneth Newton McKenzie-deceased- was a prosperous farmer in Harris district, Wood County, West Virginia, where he owned 250 acres of land, 100 under cultivation. He was a son of John and Mary (Carlin) McKenzie, who died in Meigs County, Ohio, and was born in Beaver County, Pennsylvania, December 24,1830. He settled in this county in 1855, and the following year, on the 21st of August, was married to Charlotte Flinn, who was born in Wood County, August
12, 1834. They were united by the Rev. E. T. Mitchell, of the Christian Church, and six children blessed their wedded life. The were: John W., born June 26, 1857, died January 11, 1874; Lucinda M., December 26,1858, died May 8, 1872; Virginia E., October 17, 1860, lives in this district; Elma Lois, November 21, 1862, died March 25, 1878; Emery N., October 5, 1864, lives at home, Elmore E., December 8, 1867, lives at home. John and Phebe (Cross) Flinn were the parents of Mrs. McKenzie. Her mother died in this county. Mr. McKenzie was a commissioned officer in the Virginia Guards during the War Between The States. He was a firm believer in the Christian religion, and in that faith he died. Mrs. McKenzie has been in the fellowship of the Methodist Church nearly thirty years, and her daughter is also now in that church. Emery N. McKenzie, also a member of the church, is an enterprising young man, his mother's staff in the days of her widowhood, and an earnest worker in the church and Sunday-school. The family receive their mail at Belleville, Wood County, West Virginia.

I am looking for other researchers interested in the Tracy and Protzman families of Wood County, WV.

Joseph Tracy (b. 1793) and his wife, Polly Haven Tracy (b. 1797), came to Wood County about 1850 from Ellisburgh, NY. Polly died 7 MAR 1859 in Wood County. Joseph died 17 APR 1858, possibly in Boone or Wood County.

Lawrence Protzman (1751-1823) and family came to Wood County from Rockingham County, VA after 1810. He moved to Marietta, OH before 1817.

An ancestor died in 1918 in Akron, Summit Co., OH and the certificate states she was buried at Walker Station, WV.

(According to the 1910 census she resided in Parkersburg, Wood Co.,)

William COLLETT family, ca1810-1858

I am looking to connect with anyone researching the family of William Collett and descendants who are living in Wood Co from between 1810 and 1820 up through 1850.

I am trying to determine if this William is the same William whose son James m Mary Carter 1909 in Loudon Co VA. I believe that James and Mary are the same James and Mary who are in Warren Co, KY, pre1820-on. Several researchers think that James and Mary are the parents of the men discussed below. I don't think so. They don't seem to be missing even 2, let alone up to 4 sons :) The name styles they use, though, are not dissimilar.

I am searching for the VA origins of 4 brothers/cousins? They appear in Warren Co, OH (not to be confused with Warren Co, KY!). The youngest of the 4 has a bio published in a Jay Co, IN, history in 1882 saying he was born Loudon Co, VA. That is the only clue I have to a county.

The 4 men are: Presley b May 1812 VA m 1834 Warren Co, OH. Admiral (yes, it's his name, not a title) bc1815 VA m 1848 Warren Co, OH. John b Nov 1815 VA m 1841 Warren Co, OH, and William b Dec 1819 Loudon Co, VA, m 1842 Warren Co, OH. These 4 are definitely related--they migrate together and name their kids after each other.

They MAY be related to the Anne Collett (1786-May 1850) who appears in the 1830 and 1840 censuses in Warren Co OH as HOH. In 1830 she has 2 boys in her household, and 1840 2 men--probably the same 2, age-wise. She dies May 1850 and appears in the Mortality Schedule, bVA. Unfortunately, there seem to be 3 different Collett families in Warren, OH. One is directly from England, the other is a wealthy and prominent family, also from VA (but arrived OH first). William was the only of the 4 who headed toward wealthy/prominent :) I also wonder if he is not a brother.

I suspect these 4 may be grandsons of William, sons of one of his older sons (but not James). I have been unable to prove or disprove. Perhaps they meant to go to Warren Co, KY, not realizing there was more than 1 Warren Co?

I am happy to share what I have on these 4 and their descendants. Presley is my 3ggrandfather. I have done a fair amount tracing down a few generations hoping to find clues to their VA origins in another branch. I have completely struck out.

My Gr-grf Michael Lucas b 1828 in Belmont Co,Oh 1st wife and twins died in childbirth, 2nd wife Rachel Jane Beckett, their first two children were born in Belmont Co,Oh, they moved to Wood Co,W,va abt 1860 and had John Hatton Lucas,who died in Lubeck in 1923. He had a son John Sherman Lucas who married Norma May Hunter,they are buried at Lubeck Cem, they had a son Alva Lucas b 1915 mar a Nora ?. They are buried at Lubeck Cem.
I recieved a school picture of Alva recently, but have no info on him or family. Hoping someone in Wood Co might be able to fill me in on it. My Gr-grf Michael had 11 children there, I,m sure many of his decendents are still there.

I am looking for descendants of John & Susan Thorn/e who moved from Prince William Co, VA to Wood Co, VA, about 1817. Most know & research their second daughter Mahalia. Who married Elijah Petty Dye. New research has uncovered Lucinda Thorn that married a man named Foley who is enumerated in the Dye house in 1850 & probably a daughter named Mary. John Thorn seems to have lived in the Mineral Wells area.

Trying to find info on above mentioned. 1920 and 1930 census of Parkersburg has him working as a railroad conductor. WWI and WWII Draft reg. has him b. 10 Oct 1887 in Louisa, KY. He married about 1914, Louise Lambert. Other researchers have him died 4 Nov 1970 yet I can find no proof of this. Louise died 9 July 1945 (per others) but again, no proof. Seems people copied from other sites and no one can give me proof. Says they are buried in Spring Hill Cemetery, so now looking for cemetery.
Anything one can provide will be greatly appreciated.

John J. Hughes of 1704 Lawrence street, died suddenly at his home this morning at 11:30 o'clock of a heart attack. Mr. Hughes was 54 years old and for several years had been employed by the Monogahela West Penn Public Service company. He has been a resident of this city for the past 30 years. Mr. Hughes is survived by his wife, Mrs. Juliet Hughes, one daughter, Anna Louise Hughes, a student at De Sales Heights academy; one son, Charles E. Hughes, who is enlisted in the United States navy as a radio operator and is now located in China; two sisters, Mrs. George Bonnett of this city and Mrs. Fred Boyce of Akron, Ohio.

Gerard Brisco vs. Isaac Williams and Rebeccah and Joseph Tomlinson-- O. S. 103; N. S. 35--Bill in Harrison County. In spring of 1772 Gerard Brisco, John and Permenus Brisco and Joseph West became adventurers in the Western country. Wheeling was their object, but they found the lands already taken. In talking with sundry of the settlers and particularly with Joseph Tomlinson, ---- Martin, now deceased, late husband of Rebekah Martin, now wife of Isaac Williams, and by their advice they went down the Ohio to mouth of Muskingum and took possession of the place afterwards called Point Poteeme (Patience?) which was allotted to John Brisco. And the land opposite to Gerard Brisco. Orator came from Maryland. William Crawford, a surveyor of Augusta, was murdered by the Indians. ---- Martin, Rebecca's husband, was killed while hunting or trading with the Indians. Answer states, in fall of 1769 Samuel Tomlinson improved and settled the land and finally, in 1773, with Benj. Tomlinson, went there with a canoe of provisions. Rebecca was sister of Samuel Tomlinson, then Rebecca Martin, widow of John Martin. Samuel, Benjamin and Joseph were brothers. Permenus Briscoe and John Wilson depose in Woodford County, Kentucky, December, 1795. Nathaniel Tomlinson was also at Wheeling. John Wilson was one of the first party with Brisco in 1772. Gen. John Nevill deposes in Pittsburg. Benj. Tomlinson, aged 44, deposes in Allegheny County, Maryland, 14th April, 1796.

James Gillespie petitions to be made a defendant. Owner of tract under Paul Armstrong who made the settlement. James Neal answers. In 1753 encouragements were held out by the Royal Government to settlers on western waters. Washington, on his return from Venango in December, 1753, or January, 1754, met many families crossing the Alleghenies. The Legislature, which was prorogued 14th February, 1754, appropriated £10,000 for encouragement and protection of western settlers. On 19th February, 1754, Dinwiddie issued a proclamation promising a land bounty to volunteer in the service and assist to expel French and Indians and help erect a fort at Forks of Monongalia. A regiment under Col. Joshua Fry was immediately raised and marched from Alexandria, about middle or latter end of March, 1754. Fry died at Patterson's Creek, and command devolved on Col. Washington, who had been defeated at Great Meadows on 17th April, 1754, having been dispatched from Williamsburg to Fort Cumberland in February, 1754, and having taken command of one Company from New York and one from South Carolina, as well as some Virginia Companies which had been previously raised and stationed upon frontier, from whence Washington rushed into the western country, meets and defeats a certain Jumonville, one of the enemy only escaping. Washington finds that the French were turning out of Fort Duquesne (now Pittsburg) too strong for him to withstand, retreats to Great Meadows, is attacked and compelled to surrender to De Villiere, but marches out of his little fortification with honors of war and returns to Wills Creek, viz: Fort Cumberland. At this surrender Lieutenants Stobo and Van Braam were surrendered to that officer as hostages. Within a year the First Virginia Regiment was disbanded, though raised again, or another in its stead, and that one or two other regiments were also raised in Virginia, prior to reduction of Fort Duquesne, for that was not evacuated by French until November, 1758. During that war one regiment was raised by Col. Washington, one by Col. Bird, and one by Col. Stephen, yet it appears the whole of the 200,000 acres were granted only to [p.169]
90 men. The grant was made 15th December, 1769, by order of Council, which expressly confines the claimants to the lands on Great Sandy and the Great Kenawha, and lands on Ohio waters between Sandy and Kenawha. Neal went on the campaign with Dunmore in 1774 and resided on the frontier until summer of 1777, when he raised a company of regulars, joined 13th Virginia Regiment, and marched to the Grand Army of the U. S. He was one of Commissioners to settle unpatented lands in Monongalia, &c. He has been in possession of part of the land for upwards of 40 years. Valentine Cooper answers that he had resided on the frontier of Virginia for 55 years. He had three brothers in the regular army in old French wars, and were in the army when Fort Duquesne was evacuated by the French in 1758. He was on the campaign with Dunmore and was present of the treaty at Big Shawnee town, when he returned and settled on Dunkard Creek in Monongalia County, where he continued until 1777 or 1778, when he moved to Union Town in Pennsylvania. Stayed there one year and moved back to Virginia frontier. He moved into Wood County 1787 or 1788. David Creel, son of George Creel, answers. William Red-cliff (and his son, Stephen) answers. Lovell Perry, aged 86 years, deposes 24th October, 1811, in Spottsylvana County; he knew William Magee who in 1754 or 1755 voluntarily entered himself a cadet in Braddock's army, and died a few days after the army was discharged. John Young, aged 77, deposes in Staunton, 25th June, 1814, first knew Andrew Fowler in 1756 or 1757. Andrew was a soldier in Braddock's War. Andrew Lewis, Washington, and Cap. Peter Hogg at battle of Big Meadows, in 1754. He died in Bath County about 4-5 years ago. Land office warrant No. 299, 17th January, 1780, for 2,000 acres, to John May, assignee of William Hughes, who served as adjutant in Col. Washington's Regiment of regulars in late war between France and England. Patent to James Neal, in Monongalia. Order of Council 22d March, 1780. It is proved by James Mercer, Esq., that two of his brothers, viz: George Mercer and John Fenton Mercer, were in services of this State, 1754; former as captain, latter as ensign, in Joshua Fry's Regiment, and served until Regiment was discharged. In 1755, on the expedition vs. Fort Duquesne, George Mercer commanded an independent Company, and John Fenton Mercer was appointed a lieutenant of horse, commanded by Cap. Robert Steuart. In the Old Virginia Regiment under Col. George Washington, that they both commanded Companies and served until John was killed, and George was promoted to rank of Lieut. He was a soldier in the Braddock War and was there wounded in the hip. He was a drum major in Braddock's War and was at battle of Big Meadows under Captain Savage. Afterwards he kept a public house near Halifax on the Roan Oak. About four years before the Revolution, Thomas Moss lived on the Roan Oak near Marmaduke Nophlite ferry, about 25 miles below Halifax town in North Carolina. He was then about 40 years old. Squire Perry Crossthwaite of Cynthiana, Kentucky, was his son-in-law. He had a son, John. Perry deposes that Thomas helped carry Gen. Braddock off the field. He also claimed to have whipped old Gen. Morgan. Philip Buckner deposes in Brackin County, Kentucky, 1814, that he knew Thomas Moss in 1754, 1755 at George Todd's in Caroline County, Virginia, when he was on the expedition as a drummer, in the campaign of that year under General Braddock and Col. Muse and Col. Washington. Deponent has lived in Kentucky since 1783. Certificate from Caroline County Court 10th February, 1780, that George Turner served as soldier in First Virginia Regiment under Washington. Ditto from Spottsylvania, 17th February, 1780, that Nathaniel Gist served as Lieutenant in Cap. Christopher Gist's Company of Rangers, in 1756, and served until 1757, when the Company was reduced. I'm looking for missing Hoffman kin to fill gaps in the tree I'm building for my wife's father.
Henry L. Hoffman and Mary Walker Pegley moved to Wirt county about 1860. they had a farm that was close to the Wirt /Wood line. Many of their descendants ended up in Mineral Wells, Rockport and/or Parkersburg. A few stayed in the Elizabeth area of Wirt Co. Harry L.Hoffman married Margaret Whitlatch and was killed by a team of horses at his farm in Elizabeth. He is buried at Limestone Cemetery, Wood Co. Anna Cathrine Hoffman married Albert Putnam Dodge (his second marriage), she died in Parkersburg (I don't believe she had any children with Albert). John S. died as a infant in Louisville, Kentucky. John W. married Blanche Ruble, they moved to New Castle Pa. Julia Margaret married Sam Corey, They are buried in the Red Hill Cemetery, Parkersburg. Melvin never married is buried K of P Cem. George Washington married Anna Florence they are buried K of P cemetery Elizabeth. Thomas Hamilton (G. W.'s twin) married Addie Emerick, they are buried in Mt. Pleasant Cemetery. Frank Rex's first wife Irene Boyles and their two daughters Paula and Wrighta are buried in the K of P Cem. Frank and his second wife, Ola Stephens, are buried in the Limestone Cemetery, Rockport. Walter Lee married Ida Woodyard, they are buried in the K of P Cemetery Elizabeth. Mary Walker married Zadoc Homer Bumgarner, they are both buried in K of P Cemetery. And James Hoffman died as a infant on the farm on Sandy Creek.

My thought was that if I could link the Celebrant to a particular church, then I might be able to see if the church has more detailed records than those kept by the state.

Here is what I know:
31 Dec 1876 Lafayette Biddle m. Homa Martin - Celebrant was W.P. Walker (maybe M.P. Walker)

30 May 1877 Henry WJ Hoffmann m. Mariane Stetro - Celebrant was H.F. Parker (I suspect this wedding may have been at Trinity Episcopal Church)

Fort Boreman Hanging Records

Hello,

I have a relative who was unfortunatly hanged at Fort Boreman on February 9, 1866 due to a murder that was commited to an Abrahm Deems in 1864. He was later found to be innocent, but by then, well you know.
Anyway, his name was Thomas Boyce. I looked in the Wood county death records and could not find him. Is there a special place I could look to find his death certificate? Does anyone have access to any of these records and maybe could do a lookup? Alternately, what would be the best newspaper of the time to maybe find some records? Can anyone help a guy out?

I believe Ellen Curran married Henry Willis sometime between 1865-1875 in Wood Co. I also need to check a marriage for a T. James Curran around 1875-1880. Hello, I hope someone can help me. I need for someone to check the Wood County Cemetery books and see what cemetery Stephen Thaddeus Debolt is buried in. On his death certificate it says Greenwood Cemetery and on another source I have Peninsula Cemetery.

Also, does anyone know where I would send for an autopsy report that was done in 1936?

Saunders house at 520 5th Street, Parkersburg

Hello.

I am looking for information on the Saunders family from Parkersburg. They owned some property on 5th street in the late 1800's early 1900's and I grew up in a house that was on the property and can not find out ANYTHING about it. People have told me it was built in the early 1900's but I'd like to know what year....who built it...and if it was built for the saunders family and if they might have photos of it or anything information. I've looked up deeds and everything...can find stuff on the property but nothing on the house.

From the deeds I found I traced the property belonging to the saunders as early as 1908 (found it in a will in the courthouse) up until about the 50's. So if it was in their family for more than half a century it must have meant something to them.

I also found that it was in the Kimes family for many years as well!

Strange things have happened on the property and I'm desperate to get ahold of ANYONE who knows anything about the home I lived in as a child on 520 5th street that is no longer standing. Anyone that can help....PLEASSSSSSSSEEEEEEE respond!

I know there is an Appraisment and Bill of Sale on a Goucher, that I need a copy of, also there should be an orphan docket on the Goucher children, possibly in the same area. Parents names were William Goucher, d. 1825, mother's name Sarah Goucher, d. abt. 1830 to 1835. Can anyone help? Your assistance will be greatly appreciated.

She was born Ada Bessie Curtis in Grafton, WV September 8, 1923 to Patrick Charles Curtis and Ada Bessie Weaver. She was adopted/contracted out to Forest Fisher and Cora Weaver Fisher as a baby. They raised her in Nitro, WV as their own and she did not know until years later she was adopted. She went to Nitro High school in the late 30's early 40's. She was a member of the First Baptist Church. Looking for anyone who may have older relatives that may have known her or perhaps someone with yearbooks.

She married James G. Bays in Charleston WV. Gave birth to Kenneth Allan Bays in 1943 and divorced a couple years later.

In later years she followed Forst and Cora to Parkersburg where she gave birth to my dad in 1956. She lived in Belpre Ohio for a short time in 1956 as well and at some point before 1961 moved to Florida with her son Kenneth.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I'm trying to find some information on this couple. What little I know is that they were living in Wood Co, Wva during the 1880 census. Elizabeth was born abt May 20, 1825 in Va, and died on July 20, 1890 (unsure if it was Wood Co), and Mathias abt 1815 in Va, and died abt 1887 in Wood County.

My family is of German decent (or so the story goes). I'm unsure of the surname may have been changed from 'Fuchs' to 'Fox' during their lifetimes.

Joanna Hoffman was the youngest child of Frank Rex Hoffman and Ola Stephens. She was born Sept. 2, 1916 in Wood County out on Limestone Ridge, Rockport. I have been unable to locate her birth record at the WOOD County Court House. She was married to Roy Lesher after 1930 in Wood County, but I have been unable to find any information at the court house about this either. Anyone have any suggestions where I might look next??

Margaret (Francis) Jackson (1797-1873) & Family

I am trying to track down some information on several Jacksons. Margaret (Francis is her maiden name) Jackson died in Wood County on May 11, 1873. I do not know where she is buried. She was born July 4, 1797 in Pennsylvania. She apparently died at the home of her son, Robert Francis Jackson. (He was born May 18, 1825 in PA - died August 10, 1900 in Kanawha County.)

Also, she had two daughters (among other children) that according to my information are buried in Wood County. One, a Sally Jackson that married a John Allamon (sp?). She was his second wife. Sally Jackson was born before 1825 in Pennsylvania. No idea of when she died.

The second daughter is Jane Jackson (d.o.b. April 9, 1830 in PA) that married an Andrew Pettit from Pennsylvania. She was his first wife and she died July 5, 1874 in Wood County.

Does anyone have any further information such as where Margaret, Sally, or Jane are buried, or when Sally died. Any other inforamtion would also be appreciated. Thank you.

Does anyone know where Cyrenius (other spellings possible)Anderson, b. 14 June 1832, d. 5 Apr 1896 and his wife Henrietta Smith, d. 14 Nov 1871 are buried? They lived in Wood County, in the 1880 census (last record I have for him) he was in Harris District. Henrietta died in 1871 and Cyrenius married Temperance MOSSHOLDER in 1872. She lived till at least the time of the 1900 census. I do not know where she is buried, either.

My wife was a Hoffman, her grandfather was Henry "Gay" Hoffman, born April 18, 1905 at Rockport Wood Co., WV. His horse trading buddies pronounced it Huffman. He was from the Rockport/Limestone area. Gay married Julia Lucile Wigal, born Nov. 20, 1903, on Aug. 6, 1924.
Gay's father was Frank Rex Hoffman, born Dec. 22, 1868 in Elizabeth, Wirt Co., WV. I believe Gay's father was called by his middle name also. Rex Hoffman married Leola Stephens, born July 18, 1880,(it was his second marriage, his first wife, Irene Boyles and two daughters Pauline and Wrighta died early in that marriage.)sometime in either 1900 or 1901. Rex and Leola, or Lilly as she was called, had six children; Everett, who died shortly after his birth; Garnet Virginia, who married Carl Poling; Henry Gay, mentioned above; Glen Otto, who married Susie Mae Deem (after her death he remarried Margaret Golda Gault); Genevieve, who married Alvin Curtis Lemmon(Alvin changed the spelling of his last name to Lemon); and Lastly Joanna, who married Eddie Ortiz.
Rex's father was Henry L. Hoffman, born about 1831 in either Pennsylvania or Germany. Henry married Mary Walker Pegley, born about 1841 in either Ireland or England.
