My GG grandfather lived in Wirt county in the 1880's till his death in 1934. My grandfather remembers tell of him belonging to a group of men called the Red Riders, (could also be Red Men) It seems like maybe it was a kind of private organization, that took some matters into their own hands. (It sounds like a story of Robin Hood. )

Anyway, I was wondering if anyone else has heard of this or has any info?

My gg grandfather lived around the Right Reedy, PeeWee area.
Thanks!!
Nikki

We now have over 2000 Wirt County tombstone photos and over 200 Wirt County obituaries on The Tombstone Site #2. Our site focuses primarily on documenting the deaths of our Wirt Co. ancestors. We also have research links and a place to post your queries about your ancestors. We are a young site and hope to see it grow as its sister site, Calhoun, Roane, Braxton & Clay Co., WV Tombstones has done.

If you'd like to see what we've got or better yet, if you have tombstone photos or obituaries you'd like to share with other Wirt county cousins, contact me for an invitation.

We hope to see you there soon!
Charlene

It is time for the annual Lee/ Davis reunion located in the little school house at the top of the hill on Sanoma Road in Burning Springs just outside of Elizabeth in Wirt county, WV. It is held the first Sunday in August, and is a wonderful trip back in time.

It starts at 12:00 with a sharing of foods brought by family members.

I have attended several of these personally and have had a wonderful time each visit meeting relatives from all over the US! The views are incredible.

Sandy

John Wilson m. Mary E. Cox

Hello,
I read a post from awhile ago that said John Wilson had a bio in Hardesty's 1882 publication in the "bios" secion. I think they must have meant the atlas. The link no longer works and the nearest copy of the atlas is in the next state over. I was wondering if anyone has a copy of this bio?

Second, I found this which might interest some of you. It was in an 1883 publication by the federal government. It's a list of everyone they were paying a pension to.
Wirt County, WV:
(Certificate No., Name, Post Office, Cause, Monthly Rate, Date of Original allowance)
"16,141 Wilson, John R, Wirt C. H., w. l. arm & chest, $12,
Aug 1863
90,042 Wilson, John, Wirt C. H., dis. of lungs & debility,
$18, ......"

I also found online at the Wirt County website lots of good cemetery listings. However I found two John Wilsons, one in the Knights of Pythia cemetery, and the other in Fairview. Both are listed as military markers. The one in Fairview has no dates. The one in KOP cemetery has the following dates: 6/5/1843-10/23/1909. I'm wondering if the dates are on the tombstone itself or was added by the compiler. The dates don't exactly match because the death date is that of Mary, his wife (off by one day), and the birthday is that of John if you transpose 1843 for 1834. Hmmm. Anyone out there with any ideas??
Thanks so much!
Jodie

My wife's family settled in Wirt county about 1860. Henry L. Hoffman had a farm on Sandy creek. Some moved to the Rockport or Mineral Wells areas. Henry L. is buried in the Limestone Cemetery. Others are buried in the Knights of Pythias Cemetery in Elizabeth. Henry L. was originally from Pennsylvannia and his wife Mary Walker was either from Ireland or England, depending on which census you look at. Henry's son Frank R. was a member of the Knights of Pythias and his first wife Irene Boyles and their two daughters are buried in the Knights of Pythias Cemetery.
If you are related to the Hoffmans, I love to add your line to my wife's tree. If you might have information about them I'd loved to hear from you. If I can help you with your research feel free to contact me.

Looking for descendants of Oliver & Martha Holdren Givens

I'm looking for grandchildren and later descendants of Oliver and Martha Givens. They are cousins of varying degrees because my great-grandfather James Hineman Givens was Oliver's brother. Both brothers were born in Monroe County, OH, and as adults eventually moved to WV. Oliver lived in Wood County for a few years before moving to Wirt County where he remained until his death. James lived in Pleasants County and in Tyler County where he died in 1899. Sometime after 1900 his widow Marinda moved with the younger children to Wirt County. Sons who survived her were Elmer, Earnest, Franklin, and Selmon (nicknamed Duck). She was also survived by a her granddaughter Edna Mae. They lived in Elizabeth either on Horse Run Road or Two Ripple. I would appreciate ANY information you may have about these relatives. My e-mail address is rgivens@ma.rr.com. Joan Givens, Fairmont, WV

Hello, I am looking for any information about Charles Schoolcraft and Alcy Ann (Sees) Schoolcraft.

I know they married in Wirt WV on August 29th 1867. I have the names of all of their children birth and death dates. I also have an obit for Martin L. (Lew) Schoolcraft that I will post also.

Anyone with any information about this family please contact me, I have hit a brick wall but, as you can see from this article and the obit I know I am getting close. It appears Alcy Ann lived with Martin to help care for his children so this means she remained in this area. Charles her husband passed before her and I'm not sure if it was in WV or Ohio that he passed away. One of their children was John Robert Schoolcraft who was my g.grandfather. I have information on this Schoolcraft family I would like to share and I am very interested in contacting any Schoolcrafts still in the area.

Alta Hoskins Givens

I am seeking information about Alta Hoskins who was born in Wetzel County in 1884 or 1885. Her parents are unknown. In 1901 at the age of 17 she married James Wilbur Givens born in Pleasants County in 1878. His parents were James Hineman and Marinda Givens. The couple married in Benwood, Marshall County, where James was employed as a pipefitter. They had three children, two of whom survived: William E. born in 1904 and James O. born in 1906. Sometime after 1910 the family moved to Elizabeth perhaps to be near his widowed mother who moved there after the death of her husband in Tyler County in 1899. After 1920 James and Alta divorced, and he moved to Perry County, Ohio, where he remarried and lived until his death in 1960. Alta and the boys are not in the 1930 Census, and I've learned very little about them other than that they spent some time in Ohio. James' brothers Frank, Elmer, Ernest, and Selmon (nicknamed Duck) lived with Marinda and their young niece Edna May. Marinda's brother-in-law Oliver and his family also lived in Wirt County--in Palestine I believe. Marinda was my great-grandmother and her sons, of course, my great-uncles. So little was known about my dad's paternal side that I've decided to learn as much about them as I can. I'm the last of James H.'s line. I would appreciate any information not only about Alta but also about my great-uncles and Cousin Edna. You may e-mail me at rgivens@ma.rr.com or write to me at Joan Givens, Route # 1, Box 389 A, Fairmont, WV. 26554-9753. If you need an SASE, let me know. Thank you. Joan

They lived somewhere between Elizabeth, Palestine, Reedy from the 1890's to the early 30's. He most likely was in the Masonic Lodge. Have a lot of family tree info if there might be any descendants reading. Goes back to the year 600 ( yep ) with some extremely interesting connections. They're buried at Boggs cemetery at Reedy. I believe he was a shoemaker and a stonecutter. She was from the Mcwhorter line from Jane Lew. Thank you, Jim Fletcher Plover, WI 715 344 6036

And is there anyone who remembers my great-uncle Franklin Givens who lived in Elizabeth until his death in 1977? He would have been 92 when he died. It's possible that his elderly niece Edna May Givens was still living at that time. Frank had several cousins--children and grandchildren of Oliver and Martha Holdren Givens--who also lived in Wirt County. There are definite family connections being made at this reunion so bring anything you have that may be of interest to other's in our Richards family.

We look forward to seeing this reunion grow, so please bring your family, a covered dish or dessert and something for the White Elephant Gift Exchange and join us in an afternoon of visiting & fun!

Events we have planned:
SATURDAY, AUG. 4TH:
10:00 a.m. Trip to George Washington Richards Sr.'s gravesite.

SUNDAY, AUG. 5TH:
11:00 a.m. Reunion gathering at North Bend, shelter #3.
Marinda Givens & sons after 1900

I am looking for information regarding my great-grandmother Marinda Ellen Givens and her sons (Ernest, Elmer, Franklin, and Selmon) who moved to Elizabeth sometime after 1900. It is possible that her daughter Serena and another son, Oliver, also moved with them. The family had lived in Meade District in Tyler County for several years. Serena's daughter Edna Mae lived with Marinda and her uncles after the move to Wirt County. Another son, James Wilbur Givens, moved with his wife Alta (Hoskins) and sons William E. and James O. from Marshall County to Elizabeth sometime after 1910. Marinda was the widow of James Hineman Givens who died in 1899 in Tyler County and the sister-in-law of Oliver and Martha Holdren Givens who, I believe, lived in Reedy. Oliver and James were the sons of Andrew and Ann Edwards Givens who lived in Pleasants County for many years. Andrew bought property in Wirt County which was held in trust for James H.'s children. I do not need Census information, but family history would be of great interest to me. Perhaps some of Oliver's great-grandchildren still live in Wirt County and know a little more about the family than I do. You may e-mail me at rgivens@ma.rr.com or write to me at Joan Givens, Route # 1, Box 389 A, Fairmont, WV, 26554-9753. Let me know if you need an SASE. Hoping to hear from a cousin or two. Joan

I am looking for information about Two Ripple Baptist Church and Two Ripple Cemetery. My great-grandmother Marinda Ellen Givens and her sons, so far as I can learn, attended the church and are buried in the cemetery. Marinda died in March 1928; Ernest (Earnest) in July 1931; Elmer in December 1952; Selmon in September 1955; and Franklin in May 1977. Marinda's granddaughter Edna Mae Givens may be buried there, too. You may e-mail me at rgivens@ma.rr.com or write to me at Joan Givens, Route # 1, Box 389 A, Fairmont, WV, 26554-9753. Marinda was Oliver and Martha Holdren Givens' sister-in-law, and I believe that some of their great-grandchildren may still be living in Wirt County. Any information will be welcome.
Roy Calvin Mathess, POW/MIA Korean War

I am searching for the family of a soldier who was killed in the Korea War. When he entered service he gave Wirt County, West Virginia as his home of record. His remains were never recovered.

Soldier: ROY CALVIN MATHESS
Born: MAy 31, 1925, Cuacasian
Date of loss: July 16, 1950, MIA

When the Korean War ended the enemy never returned or accounted for over 8,000 of our servicemen. They died in their hands. That was over 50 years ago. Since that time DNA has been perfected and also they are recovering remains in North Korea. Our government is obligated to return those remains to the proper family. DNA samples have been obtained from most of the families of these missing soldiers. For various reasons some families have not been located. There are 54 families in West Virginia that have not been located. There is one family from Wirt County that has not been located.

When the remains are recovered and identified they will be returned to the family for proper burial. I am just an old (76 years) Combat Veteran out of the Korean War and thankful that I did return. I consider this a very noble cause and I hope that you can help in some way to find this family. For more information on the project you may go to http://www.jpac.pacom.mil/. My part in the program is to match up the lost families with the proper agency.

I will be grateful for any assistance in locating this family.

Harold Davis
40th Infantry Division
Korea ’52-‘53
910-791-2333
hgdavis@bellsouth.net
Mary Elizabeth Debolt, the daughter of Benjamin Debolt and Darcus Wood married Alfred Solomon or Solomon Alfred Bumgarner/Bumgardner on July 4, 1863 in Wood County, WV. Alfred had been married once before Mary to an Elizabeth Mann in September 23, 1857 in Wirt County, WV.

Both of the marriage records indicate that Alfred's parents were Frederick and Margaret Bumgarner/Bumgardner.

Can anyone help on this specific Bumgarner family?

Thanks in advance for any help.

In Christ,
Melissa Barker
kaitysmom@peoplestel.net

I will be glad to look up for you, but my Census starts in 1850..marriages 1854-1899 & 1900-1970, 1920 is my last Census, I have access to Hartley Cem, Mt. Zion, & Wolverton. My pics are also of Hartley school, I do not know the children, the teacher has on a long black skirt..my Mom went to Wirt Co. High School and I found a pic of her with a class of girls, I fgure she was a Freshman, about 1937, she graduated in 1941...If anyone knows of a relative who may be in this pic, let me know...snider_susan@hotmail.com....THANKS

John T. Debolt b. 1855

Hello, I posted this same query back in 2002 on this board. I am posting again to see if there is anyone out there that can help.

My great-great-great grandfather was John T. Debolt. He was born April 13, 1855 in Wirt County, WV. His mother, Dorcas (Wood) Debolt died at his birth. His father was Benjamin Debolt.

I have tried for several years to find a death record for Dorcas and a birth record for John and have come to find that these record do not exist in Wirt County.

So, my question is this: Is there any source in Wirt County for the year 1855 that can shed any light on these two events?

Another item that I am seeking is possible court records that say John T. Debolt was given to the Shuman family to be raised. John T. Debolt went to live with the Shuman family and was raised by them. He never changed his last name, so I am guessing that he was not formally adopted by them. This arrangement has always seemed strange by me because John's father was still living and lived for several more years after John's birth. John also had siblings that were married. Why couldn't one of them taken him in? Of course I don't know the circumstances at the time, but it is a mystery.

Sorry to be so long winded. If ANYONE can help, I would be greatful.

In Christ,
Melissa Barker
I'm trying the ‘broad brush' approach this time.

I'm looking for any Williams families that had a child by the name of Joel that was born no earlier than 1790 and married no later than 1837 in Virginia (or what is now West Virginia).

Joel was my GG Grandfather and I am attempting to find some reference to potential parents and/or siblings. The only records referencing Joel state he was born in Virginia. I suspect it may have been in the area of the current Jackson, Wirt and Wood Counties of West Virginia.

Joel's wife was Mary Ann (unkn last name).

Children of Joel & Mary Ann were:
Abraham B. b. 1837
Mary Rebecca b. 1838
Susannah b.1839
Levina and Mariah b. 1844 (possibly twins or wrong date)
Alphias b. 1847

Joel died in Jackson County (most probably now the portion that is now Wirt Co.) sometime between late 1846 and August 1847.

Any information pertaining to a potential family for Joel would be greatly appreciated.

Dick Williams

I only know that Hanorah Elizabeth Joy married a man from a supposedly distinquished family (signer of Declaration of Independence, from Baltimore?????). Anyway, I am having a heck of a time locating him...maybe this West Va. cemetery is a clue, becasue not able to find in DC, MD or VA indexes for 1900. They had two daughters: May and Clair Dorothy, born 1903.
They DIVORCED, a scandal in those days, expecially as Lizzie was irish Catholic, I imagine. By 1920 Hanorah was remarried to John Earl Birch and living in Washngton. Any ideas of help would be greatly appreciated

Nancy MILLER m Levi STEED, 1836

I'm searching for any information on the parents and siblings of Nancy MILLER who married Levi STEED on Aug. 28, 1836 in Wood Co., (W)VA. The STEEDs lived around Newark in the area of Wood Co. that became part of Wirt Co. in 1848.
Levi STEED, b. abt 1800 in PA, was the s/o Aaron STEED and grandson of Peter STEED. Nancy MILLER may have been Levi's second wife.
Levi is listed on the 1840 census for Wood Co., (W)VA with three males under 15 and three females under 15 in his household. An older female (age 40-50) may be his wife, Nancy.
Before 1860, Levi moved to Boyd Co., KY and appears in Ashland on the 1860 census. Other STEEDS in Ashland are Aaron, George, Henry and Levi STEED, Jr. I would appreciate any help with this family.

I found among some old postcards of my husband's grandmother a photo-postcard of two gentlemen. On the back is written "Jap Boston, Ray Myers, I went to School with them" Grandma lived in Wirt county for much of her youth so perhaps it is of someone's Wirt county ancestors?
