Wiley, Muriel Mae, 84, a retired teacher, died Saturday November 13, 2004 in the New Martinsville Health Care Center.
Miss Wiley was born February 20, 1920 in Ross, W. Va., the second daughter of Thomas Bert and Muriel Mae Collins Wiley.
She graduated from Salem College, W. Va., in 1942 with an A.B. degree in Education.
Her first teaching job was at the Otter Den School on Piney Fork in Wetzel County, a one-room school in which she taught students in Grades 1-8 and arrived early in the morning to stoke the wood stove fire in the winter. She always believed that she honed the essence of her craft as a complete teacher at Otter Den.
She moved to the Pine Grove Elementary School in 1943, where she taught elementary school grades 4 and 5 for thirty years.
In 1974, she received her M.S. degree in Special Education from the University of Pittsburgh. She then taught in the Special Education program at Valley High School in Pine Grove until her retirement in 1985. She was devoted to teaching, and left a legacy of students who learned fundamentals of successful living from her dedicated pursuit of the craft of teaching.
She was a lifelong resident of Pine Grove before moving to the New Martinsville Health Care Center in 1994. She was also a lifelong member of St. Paul's United Methodist Church in Pine Grove, W. Va.
She is survived by a brother, Colonel Thomas S. Wiley, USAF, Retired, of Springfield, Va.; a niece, Janet S. Wiley of Ambridge, Pa.; a nephew, Lieutenant Colonel Joseph T. Wiley, USAF, of Pope AFB, N.C.; two grand-nephews; and three grand-nieces.
Friends will be received from 11 a.m. Wednesday at the Palmer Funeral Home, Pine Grove, W. Va., until time of services at 1 p.m. Interment in the Wiley Cemetery, Piney Road, near Pine Grove, W. Va.
