Bergoo Cemetery Help

I have the death certificate for an Emma (Steel) Zickefoose and it says she is buried in Bergoo Cemetery, Bergoo, W.V. Is there a cemetery index for this cemetery. I couldn't find anything online that says this is even a cemetery. I am trying to find information out on her husband who died before her. The death certificate looks like Ira Zickefoose but I have been unable to locate someone by that name who could have married Emma/Emily.

My name is Janet Clevenger Manda Kate Enoch's daughter is my great grandmother. At one time Enoch was burried nest to her. His body was supposed to have been moved. I don't know where Lucinda or Sarah are buried. I believe Lucinda is also in Cool Springs. At one time there was a metal funeral home marker on Enoch's grave. You may be able to find out for sure where he was moved by contacting John Reed at the funeral home in Webster Springs.

Am looking for any information on Lucy Carpenter Tharp (1885-1948) dau of John Carpenter & Lydia Lewis (who later married a Clayborn and lived next door to Lucy). She was married to Ballard Clayton Tharp and had a brother named Sampson. I have death certificate for Lucy, but cannot determine the exact location of the cemetery she is buried in Webster Springs...the funeral itself was held in the home of her son Stanley Clayton Tharp in Dorrtown and burial was Down Elk...I would like to know if anyone has information on which cemetery she is in---I have been to quite a few located "Down Elk" but there are still 2 or 3 swinging bridges I haven't crossed (didn't have permission and no one was there to ask but a couple of big old dogs at one!)...Can anyone lead me in the correct direction? Any information anyone has on her---pictures, relatives---anything--I would appreciate---I have spent the past year looking for Lucy...It appears she stayed with her father when Mom left---I believe John was blind which could be a reason but if anyone knows of some other arrangement, please let me know!

Joseph A. Brady Sr.
The service for Joseph A. Brady Sr., 62, of Gauley Mills, Webster County, was held Sunday at 1 p.m. at the Skidmore Funeral Home, Gassaway, with the Rev. Ernest Hughes in charge. Burial was in the Brady Cemetery.
Mr. Brady, and engineer for the B&O Railway, died Wednesday, Dec. 9, at Webster Memorial Hospital.
Survivors: wife, Donna; sons, Joseph Jr. of Gassaway, Max with the Army in Vietnam, Jack of Morgantown; Daughter, Mrs. Marian James of Portage, Ind.; sisters, Mrs. Hattie Wayne and Mrs. Naomi Wayne of Gassaway, Mrs. Cassie Given of Sisonville, Mrs. Myrtle Rose of Zenith, Ohio.

I am searching for the family of two soldiers who was killed in the Korea War. When they entered service they gave Webster County, West Virginis as their home of record. Thier remains were never recovered.

Soldier: RUBEN RICHARD BRAGG
Born: December 29, 1932, Caucasian
Date of loss: April 25, 1951, MIA

Soldier; ROBERT GAIL DETAMORE
Born; Sept. 9, 1931, Caucasian
Date of loss; July 20, 1950, POW

When the Korean War ended the enemy never returned or accounted for over 8,000 of our servicemen. They died in their hands. That was over 50 years ago. Since that time DNA has been perfected and also they are recovering remains in North Korea. Our government is obligated to return those remains to the proper family. DNA samples have been obtained from most of the families of these missing soldiers. For various reasons some families have not been located. There are 54 families from West Virginia that have not been located. There are two families from Webster County that has not been located.

When the remains are recovered and identified they will be returned to the family for proper burial. I am just an old (76 years) Combat Veteran out of the Korean War and thankful that I did return. I consider this a very noble cause and I hope that you can help in some way to find these families. For more information on the project you may go to http://www.jpac.pacom.mil/. My part in the program is to match up the lost families with the proper agency.

I will be grateful for any assistance in locating these families.

Lunda Mae Carpenter / John C. Carpenter / Mary Etta Given

I am looking for information about the family of my paternal
grandmother Lunda Mae Carpenter, the daughter of John C.
Carpenter and Mary Etta Given Carpenter. Lunda was born
at Erbacon around 1900, and she had one sister that I know
of, Nannie Carpenter who married James Perrine, and at
least one brother, Winfred Carpenter, who married Bliss
Tonkin, the sister of Lunda's first husband Moody Burton
Tonkin. Lunda and Moody had one son, my father, Harold
Burton Tonkin, born at Erbacon in 1917. Moody died young,
and Lunda married Joseph R. Davis, also of Erbacon. They had no children.

I am also interested in the family of Mary Etta Carpenter's
father Adam Given. I have found records of a marriage
to Mary Schoonover in 1838, but this would seem to make
Mary too old to have given birth to my father's grandmother
Mary Etta Given. The records of the children of Adam
Given and Mary Schoonover are conflicting, some listing one
child, Ann Eliza Given, born in 1841, and some listing
eight children including Mary Etta, but not including
Ann Eliza. I wonder if Adam Given had a second wife.

Before and since Organization 1860" by Sampson Newton Miller.Inside there is a old picture of the graduating class and faculty of Web. Springs High School 1919. There is a name Leonard (Tink) Gum Which I believe to be my Uncle, brother to my grandfather Clarence Everett Gum. Can any one tell me more about this man.. I have never met my family not ever my aunts and uncles or brothers and sisters of my father..So, in doing this tree I need all the info I can get. On the page before there is also a name "Warich Gum, I guess he was one of the men that worked on or around the train station. He could be Leonards father which would be my great grandfather. I am trying to find out if the following Chapmans are related to mine who are from Cattaraugus County, N.Y.:

Gilbert Chapman born Dec. 12, 1904 Webster, W.Va. died April 2, 1985 Olean, N.Y. He was son of Currence and Nancy Doddrill Chapman of W.Va. His obit listed a sister, Freda Williams of OH. He married Retta Hines Chapman on July 22, 1924 in Jumbo, W. VA. She was the daughter of John and Harriet Knight Hines. Her obit listed a sister Mrs. Dora Chapman and brother Hillard Hines both of Diana, W. Va.

Gilbert and Retta's children are: Frank of Franklinville (1985), Floyd of Medina, OH (1985), and Mabel Collins of Ellicottville, N.Y. who died May 29, 2006. Gilbert and Retta moved to Ellicottville, N.Y. in March 1956.

I am just trying to find out why they moved to Cattaraugus. Co., N.Y.---if it was because Gilbert had relatives there, which could be related to mine. If anyone has any info or leads on this, it would be greatly appreciated. I will also post of sites in W.Va

Frank B. Smith father of Andrew Powie Smith was an attorney in Nicholas County. Frank Smiths obit of 1902 listed that his son "Powie" worked for the Nicholas Republican Andrew had three known children Frank D. Smith
Powhatan Glades Smith and Bessie, Smith his daughter Bessie was married to Charles McCray.
Charles is listed as a school teacher in Webster County 1920-30.

The 1900 census of Webster Co. has my great-great grandfather, Samuel Tharp as being there. He died there in

I found him then in the 1920 Census in Glade Township, Webster County, WV and was hoping someone could shed some insight into whether he died in Webster County.

W. E. Dorsey officiating. Mrs. Riggleman, daughter of the late Adam G. Hamrick, was born January 18, 1869, near Webster Springs in Webster county. On May 10, 1885, she married S. G. Riggleman, who survives her. Mr. and Mrs. Riggleman moved to Barboursville 11 years ago from Randolph county. Surviving besides the husband are three sons, Dr. Leonard Riggleman, of Charleston, Omer Riggleman of Valley Head, W. Va., and Homer Riggleman of Monterville; three daughters, Mrs. J. F. Frank B. Smith his father was an attorney in Nicholas County. Frank Smiths obit of 1902 listed that his son "Powie" worked for the Nicholas Republican, Andrew had three known children Frank D. Powhatan "Glades "and Bessie, his daughter Bessie was married to Charles McCray,Charles is listed as a school teacher in Webster County 1920-30.

My Great Aunt Mennittia "Etta" "Eddie" Drennen Hickman is burried there and if my memory serves correctly the cemetary was located behind the house she lived in Cowen Webster County WV. Lee also had two sons, Willis and Hansel, I'm searching for any history on them. Lee left WV about 1920, and lost all contact with WV family. Lee left WV with "Nannie" GROSS and another two sons, Herbert and Glen. I would like to find out my grandmothers real name, besides "Nannie", and any GROSS family history. My G-G-G-grandparents were John C. Payne and Mary Sanders of Webster Co. WV. On the 1860 Census John says he is 76 years old and was born in Hanover VA. Mary and the children still at home were born in KY. John C. Jr. says he was born in Kenton Co. KY. As Kenton and Campbell Counties were once the same I looked in Campbell and found John C. Payne there in 1830. Mary would have to be a second wife because John has daughters at home that are just a few years younger than her. Also I presume that Mary's father's name was Joseph Sanders, as he lives not to far from John C. Payne in Campbell Co. KY. My grandmother and father told me that we were part Cherokee, on my Payne side, but they have both died long before I thought about finding out who was Native American. Several people clam it was Mary, but no one has confimed it. I am looking for anyone that has information on John and Mary and would like to share.

According to the Cemetery Files of John Reed that I have found on the internet, Cecil Homer Shaver died 2-23-52 and is buried in the Meadowland Cemetery in Bergoo, Webster Co.,Wv.
