Location of Smell Cemetery in Taylor Co. WV

Looking for info on Smell Cemetery located on Wilson Ridge near Thornton, in Taylor Co., WV. Inventory of cemetery made by WPA on 22 June 1937 [LDS FHL film 0250210] gives the following information on this cemetery: "... private burial ground; 1/8 acres in size; not fenced; no landscaping; condition bad. Lots not marked; graves marked by monuments, no burial records kept. No longer in use as burial ground. Earliest *stone dated 1850. Marked graves - 5; unmarked 3."

It is possible this Smell Cemetery might be located somewhere *on Rd 13" (that travels through "Siggens [phoenetic spelling for Czigans] Hollow") from hwy 50 to 30.

Elizabeth Smell d. 8-17-1894 - " d. of G.W. and S. Smell "
George W. Smell [Jr] d. 2- 1-1865 - " vet CW - 30y 5mos 14ys "
infant Smell d. 4- 7-1864 - " 24 dys" [dau. of George W. [Jr.] & Sarah [Osborn) Smell ]
John Smell d. 1- 1-1852 - "son of G.W. and S." [ Sarah Czigan Smell ]
Sarah Smell [Czigan] d. 10-16-1850 - " wife of Geo. Smell "

[ NOTE: Additional information in brackets added by researcher. ] There was an additional burial in Smell Cemetery according to another inventory made by Ruth L. Mason in 1977 [Depository: Taylor County Public Library, 200 Beech St., Grafton, WV, 26354] which may account for one of the unidentified 3 burials: i.e., "George M.D. Thorn ... 7 May 1844 - 18 Oct 1931 ... 88y-05m-11d ... buried Smell Cemetery, Taylor Co..." which has been documented by his death record #14267, WV Dept of Vital Records.

According to item under "debts & Expenses" submitted by John Nine, administrator of estate of John Czigan, dated 5 June 1848: "...Doctor Thorn submitted and received $5.00, for building coffin..." [Taylor Co. VA (WV) Inventories Book 1, pgs 19-23, 36-38 ]. It is possible this "Doctor Thorn" *MAY* have been the father of the George M.D. Thorn who is buried in the Smell Cemetery.

??? NOTE: Researcher wonders --IF-- this cemetery may be located on the original John Czigan tract of land... IT MAY BE *** POSSIBLE "** that John Czigan is buried in one of the unmarked 3 graves" ... AS WELL AS son-in-law George Smell whose date of death has not been found by researcher at this time.

1870 Census shows PETER J. RYAN living in Grafton, Taylor, WV with mother ELLEN and sister MARGARET; 1876 he married MARY A. DOUGHERTY (or Daugherty); 1880 census shows him, wife, and two daughters Mary Joseph and Gertrude, all still living in Grafton. 1880 census shows an Ellen Ryan, widowed, still living in Grafton-- my Ellen? Sometime after this Peter and family moved to Everson, PA where my grandmother, Mary Agnes, was born. She eventually married Carl J. SCHMIDT, place and date unknown. Would appreciate any lead to further information on any of these individuals.

We have worked on the Cooper line extensively over the last 10 years or so but life just gets in the way sometime and we haven't been able to search from the last couple of years. We did however stumble upon John's (my husband) great great great grandparents graves in a little cemetary on Glady Creek Rd.

After walking through the entire cemetary the last two graves in the farthest corner were theirs.

We have tracked even further than that but for the life of me, I cannot remember how many generations back since I have not looked at it in a while.

We haven't seen Hayward for a while but he was having a lot of difficulty breathing while we were there run into his son, Carl Robert all of the time. I am sure that you probably know that he bought his grandparents house there on Harmony Grove Rd

I am also researching Page B. Roach b. abt 1805 in Culpeper County, VA. His son James M. Roach (older brother to Jackson and Warren) was my Great Great Great Grandfather (father's mother's father's father's father). Although they lived in Culpeper County, VA on the 1850 census, it seems that by the 1870 census at least James and his family moved to Taylor County, West Virginia. Since West Virginia was created in August 1861 during civil war times, I have wondered if the move had anything to do with the unrest preceding the civil war. I do not know anything about Page's parents, or the maiden name of his wife Martha. I know from the census that Page and Martha had children named James, Jackson, Warren, Martha, Charles, and Page. It is interesting to me that he had a recorded property lease in 1840.

Directions to the Claremont Cemetary - (You can follow my directions to Boothsville that were on my post in August (as coming from Fairmont to Boothsville.)

Just before you come into Boothsville make a left on Deans Drive. It goes up the hill. You will pass 3 white houses (all on the right hand side), then you will see a VERY OLD stone house (probably one of the oldest in Boothsville) the road (Deans Drive) curves sharply to the left in front of it - keep going - you will continue up another hill - once it levels out you will see a red brick house on the left and the road curves again to the right. As soon as you go around that curve, you will see a blue double wide on the left and there is a road ride beside it. Turn left on that road and just follow it. You will go past 2 or 3 houses but the road leads clear to the cemetary. It is a very nice cemetary in a private setting. We have a list of everyone who is buried there that we got from one of the trustees a couple years ago.

We have not worked on the family history for a while. Too many things have gotten in the way over the last couple years but I would be happy to help you out with what we have. We could even take you to the cemetaries that we have researched so far.

I can tell you that the cemetary that Julia Wiseman is buried in is down Lost Creek Rd at the church. It is a very small cemetary..

Taylor County "Inmates" at County Courthouse

I need some information on what I believe must have been the poorhouse for Taylor County. I show my grandmother, Ada R Funk and her brothers, John, Earl, Lawrence, and Dorsey in census records that reflect they were "inmates" at the court house.

I would love to have any information or records about the poorhouse. Was it a physical place? Are there any books about it?

Any and all help is greatly appreciated. Nancy

Re: Simpson Cemetery - possibily obtain photo PLEASE??

I would sincerely appreciate any assistance in obtaining a photo of a gravestone for JANE SPADAFOR buried in Simpson in December 25, 1925. She passed away in Lake co. OH Dec. 23, 1925 but was taken to Simpson for burial.
Can someone tell me where this cemetery is located and if they would be able to obtain a photo of her grave for me? I live in Ohio, but spent a lot of summer vacations in Simpson, and my father and other family grew up in Wendell before the mine closed in early '40's.
We are having a family reunion Aug. 2, and I would love to share a photo of the grave with Janes great grandchildren. They know nothing of her and there had been confusion as to just where Jane Hamilton Spadafor was buried - UNTIL TODAY. Yippeee - I was able to obtain her Ohio death certificate today at www.labs.familysearch.org for free.
Thank you in advance -
sincerely, Ruth Tenney Sprowls sprowls@ncweb.com

Re: Fauquier VA - Taylor WV Glendennings

Lisa,

It's been a while since your posting. I hope you still have the same email address or check this board regularly.

I THINK I'm descended from John Shahan and Sarah Glendenning. I know I'm descended from Sidney Shahan, born March 27, 1828 whom I believe to be their daughter. According to "An Early History of the Shahan Family, 1678-1920" by Elizabeth Shahan, John and Sarah were married in Monongalia County, WV and had four children as of the 1830 census. The youngest female was born 1825-1830 and I believe this to be Sidney. It appears that John died before the 1840 census.

The next information that I've found for a person that is most likely Sidney is in 1846 in Boone Co., KY. It's a marriage for "Sidna Shahan" and consent is given by Sally Shahan. The marriage date is the one that is associated with Sidney marrying my great-great grandfather, David Gates. Only the groom is another David - David Williams. Then in 1850, Sidney (name spelled incorrectly again) is in Cincinnati with the Gates family and her first two children. My speculation is that David Williams died because he dropped out of the Boone County tax records.

I also found something that led me to believe Sarah remarried in Kentucky. I'll look for it and add it to this thread if I find it.

Any help you or anyone else could provide in proving this would be very much appreciated. I have lots of information on Sidney's descendents. And I've been in contact with a gentleman who may be Sidney's brother's descendent.

Thanks.
Julia

Both my grandfather, Charles Marquess Wood (1881), and his brother, Daniel Murry Wood(1887), were born in Webster. Their mother was Mary J. Parker Wood. While Mary spent most of her married life in the Baltimore and Havre DeGrace area of Md, she was originally from VA/WV and probably went back to Webster to deliver 2 of her 5 children with the aid of relatives in Webster. I have not found any of her relatives in the census records for the Webster area. I would be most intested if anyone has additional information about what are probably Parker relatives of Mary.

My husbands great grandfather was a Carder and I am pretty sure that when we last researched we found Wiseman's that linked to us. Without having my stuff in front of me I can't remember the specifics. I do have an article that was in the paper about a Ms. Wiseman who was 100 (I think) she told all about her family. She lived with her her sister (both of whom never married). I remember that we ran across it in the WV Historical & Geneaology Library at WVU.

Unfortunately we have not been able to do any research the last year and a half. You know, daily life sometimes has a way of taking over! It's usually things like this that get us sparked again. We love searching the cemetaries too!

Hi,

I am sorry that I did not answer sooner. I had to change my email address because the company I get my email thru was purchased by another company. I had delayed changing it as long as I could but they advised that it had to be done. I have access to the old email thru "a back door" as they called it but it will only be for a brief time.

Anyway, I live in Boothsville and Booths Creek runs right thru it. Actually I am looking at it right now! Boothsville is one of those places that if you blink you miss it. Is there someone in particular that you have ties to here? My in-laws have lived in a house they built on the corner of Old Rt 73 (the main drag through Boothsville) and Rock Union Rd for over 60 years and we built a house next door to them. My father-in-law moved to Boothsville when he was 13. He passed away in 2003. We know pretty much everyone around here so if you are looking for someone specific or info on someone who used to live here, chances are my mother-in-law will probably know them or know someone who does.

Not sure where you are coming from but I can give you directions from I-79. If coming from north on I-79 - Take exit 132 - South Fairmont Exit. Make left at the light. Go thru next two lights and at the third light (which is at the intersection to the mall) make a right onto Old Rt 73/Middletown Rd. It is exactly 3 miles from that light to Boothsville.

If you are coming from the south on I-79, get off exit 132 - South Fairmont exit. Bare right off exit. be very careful getting off this exit. When you bare right there is a yeild sign that people often miss. Stay in the right lane and go to next light. (Which is at the intersection to the mall) Make a right onto Old Rt 73/Middletown Rd. It is exactly 3 miles from that light to Boothsville.

There are several cemetaries in addition to the one located at the Janes Memorial Methodist Church. There is one called Claremont Cemetary and there are several located on private property.

Thanks so much for your reply.I'm looking for any cemeteries that have Maullers, Booths or Abels.I'm also looking for the Wiseman and Carder Family Cemeteries. I live in Ohio but I try to get down to West Virginia a few times a year. But since my 2 sisters died that lived there I don't get down as often as I like. The Wiseman and Carder Cemeteries (very small family cemeteries, only about 8 graves in them) I know these cemeteries are close to Boothsville. Somewhere Close. I was down in West Virginia about a month ago and looked for the Wiseman family Cemetery but the only directions I have are Valley Falls Road 1/2 mile from the highway. I found it once a couple years ago but I couldn't find it this time and I didn't think to write down the exact directions. I want to take pictures for my family history. There is just something about finding the graves of your ancestors. I didn't have the directions to Boothsville so I didn't even try looking for that. But I know I have Ancestors buried at Boothsville. Where exactly I don't know. I know the Booths and Abels which, Are my ancestors also, are buried there. I'm planning on trying to get back down to West Virginia again soon if I can get directions to these places. I want to thank you for the excellent directions to Boothsville. If you can help me with any more of these directions I will appreciate it so much.
Thank You, Bea

Actually her name was Ealon Carder. She married George Wiseman. I remember seeing it on her headstone a few years back. I just can't seem to find the cemetery. I was foolish for not bringing a camera with me.I went down a few months ago to try to find it but no success. I was supposed to go down in September but things came up and I couldn't make it. The cemetery is just a small family cemetery in Taylor county.

They are both buried in Painesville Twp OH, at Riverside Cemetery. I will be more than happy to send pictures of their gravestone. Please let me know if this is still a good way to contact you. Also, please let me know if you were ever able to get pictures of Goff and Elsie's grave, if not I will be heading down to WV before Thanksgiving, I will be more than happy to take those pictures and send them to you. Thanks!

Hey Pam, how are you doing? I had gotten my gr gr grandfather another gravestone thru the VA. I'm sure your gramma had told you, i had sent his military papers to the VA requesting a military marker since his was so deteriorated, he is also in the Smith Cemetery. I'm sure if we contact the VA with a request that they will honor these men with a gravestone. Let me know if you want me to help, I know you're not doing much lately with genealogy, but let me know. Tell your gramma i'll be talking to her. Talk to you soon, your cousin Lu Ann.

Black Dutch Heritage

I am interested in finding the Croston/Male ancestry that is associated with the term, "Black Dutch." One or more of Augustus Croston's sons (1700s) married and produced a line of people known as the "Black Dutch," and another or more son(s) produced a line of people known as the "Leathernecks." I would like information on these two lines; which sons were involved with which lineage types (Black Dutch vs. Leathernecks). Some of them moved to Taylor County at some point in history, from Barbour County. Thank you for your help with this mystery.

Re: 1860 Taylor County Census - Question?

Hi, Janet

Jacob is my GGGrandfather. His daughter, Mary Emma married Evan James Sigler, Jr. They had 5 children among whom was my grandfather, John William Sigler.

The 1900 Federal Census lists Jacob as living with his son (John) William (head of household) in Piedmont,Mineral,WV. Also living w/William was his sister, Laura (Johnson) and her two boys, William and Charles. William Forthman's birth is listed as Jan 1850, Laura's as Jun 1852, her boys as Feb 1879 and Aug 1881 respectively. Jacob's birth is listed as March 1823 in Germany, a 3 or 4 year difference from other censuses.

I hope this helps you a bit.

Tom

There is also a record of a Jacob Forthman coming into the port of Philadelphia in 1845 but I haven't seen the actual record and haven't been able to make a determination as to whether he is our Jacob yet.
