Fauquier VA - Taylor WV Glendennings

I have collected several old emails which seem to indicate a migration of a John Glendenning family from the Fauquier Co VA Glendennings migrated with his wife Margaret and children to Taylor/Mon Co in the early 1800s.

This appears to be a lost branch so I would be very interested in exchanging Glendenning family information with any Taylor Co researcher but especially those with the following names in their tree:

George m. Hannah Keener 1794 Fauquier Co VA
Sarah m. John Shahan
Martha(?) m. Aaron Luzader Jr
Eleanor m. Abraham Johnson
Margaret (Peggy) m. Stephen Poe 1799 Fauquier Co VA
James m. Mary Diana Vanhorn
Ann m. David Henry
Nancy m. Wm Ellis (possible daughter)

Thanks in advance, Lisa

Does anyone have any Clarks of VA/WVA who may have adopted, raised an orphan, or had gardianship of a child by the name of William White about or during the period of 1817-1830.
My fathers direct line is White (surname) and I was told a story about how on their way west they, the White family were attacked by Indians and the only survivor was a child named William White who was raised by a family named Clark who settled in VA/WVA. This is my brick wall and it has been for 10 years. If anyone has any info please contact me Sheila (White) at sbitcarb@hughes.net

Both my grandfather, Charles Marquess Wood (1881), and his brother, Daniel Murry Wood(1887), were born in Webster. Their mother was Mary J. Parker Wood. While Mary spent most of her married life in the Baltimore and Havre DeGrace area of Md, she was originally from VA/WV and probably went back to Webster to deliver 2 of her 5 children with the aid of relatives in Webster. I have not found any of her relatives in the census records for the Webster area. I would be most intested if anyone has additional information about what are probably Parker relatives of Mary.

My records (mostly compiled by Virginia Chatelain) show two sons of George Funk (1809-1870) had wives whose maiden names were Rosier:
John Amos Funk (1836-1878) m Nancy Rosier (1840-1900);
Israel Bolden funk (1840-1891) m Sarah Ann Rosier (1840-1921)
[If the birth dates are correct, the girls could not have been sisters]
=
Sarah's place of birth is said to be Rosier, WV; many other family events occurred in Taylor Co or Preston Co WV. Of course West Virginia was part of VA in 1840. I cannot find a record of a place named Rosier.
=
I would appreciate any information about the place name Rosier, or the birth places of the Rosier girls.

This family lived in Taylor Co. Jesse b. 11 Aug 1807, m. 15 Mar 1832 (Harrison Co), and d. 7 Dec 1875 (grave at Middleville Church Cem, Taylor Co). Srarah (Sally) Mason b. 21 Apr 1815 and d. 19 May 1882 (grave next to husband's). Sarah (widowed) is living with her son, Wesley, in the 1880 census, Booth Creek, Taylor Co. I'am searching for Sarah's parents. Some indications it might be Thomas Mason and Lidia Goodwin who were m 1814 in Harrison Co. since Jesse and Sarah names a child Lidia. Or, Robert Mason and Rebecca Hall Mason who m in 1813 Harrison Co and lived in Taylor Co (both graves in Mason and Hawker Cemetery in Taylor Co.). Any info would be highly appreciated.

Poe cemetery in Taylor County

Looking for a Poe cemetery which I think is near White Day Creek and what was once the Poe Farm. Also maybe close to the Matthew Cemetery. Could be in the vicinity of Halleck or Triune. Could be where Francis and Susan Jane Poe are buried along with their relatives.

Hello,

I have reached a dead end on my great-grandmother! I hope someone here can help.
I have been looking for her death certificate but have been unlucky so far.
Her name was Eliza (Elizabeth) Samantha Barnett Boice. She married Samuel Moore Boice
in 1888. She died on Feb 14 1913, I thought in Braxton county which was where she
lived and her tombstone is located. So now I am trying the surrounding counties to find
where and how she died. Does anyone have access to death records of this county that could do a quick lookup for me?
Thanks so much,
Mark

Today I saw a familhy bible at an antiques store in Dallas TX which includes information on the family of Bailey N. Yates, born 1843. I searched census records and found a Bailey N. Yates on the 1880 census of Fayette Co. Ohio with West Virginia listed as the place of birth. What appears to be the same Bailey Yates is listed on the 1880 and 1900 censuses of Taylor Co., West Virginia. The bible includes information on the wife and children of this man. It would be great if it could be returned to its rightful place with relatives of the Yates family. If anyone has an interest in this bible please contact me.

However, I have not been able to find any information on them accept for the fact that there was a Nicholas (my great-grandfather) and a Nicholas Jr. (my grandfather) who lived there at some point. Unfortunately I live in MD and driving out there really isn't a feasible option. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

If this on the Taylor County Web page, why is this not listed as Taylor County or some other West Virginia county?

(3) The information was provided by his wife, Helen WHITE. Why is she listed as 'consort' and not wife as many others are?

(4) Would newspapers be available for this time that might give me more circumstances of his death?
POW/MIA Korean War, Taylor Co. GODWIN, HUFFMAN

I am searching for the family of Two soldiers who was killed in the Korea War. When they entered service they gave Taylor County, West Virginia as their home of record. Thier remains were never recovered.

Soldier: HOWARD GODWIN, JR.
Born: May 28, 1928, Caucasian
Date of loss: July 20, 1950, MIA

Soldier; WILLIAM Roy HUFFNAM
Born; May 8, 1932, Caucasian
Date of loss; November 30, 1950, MIA

When the Korean War ended the enemy never returned or accounted for over 8,000 of our servicemen. They died in their hands. That was over 50 years ago. Since that time DNA has been perfected and also they are recovering remains in North Korea. Our government is obligated to return those remains to the proper family. DNA samples have been obtained from most of the families of these missing soldiers. For various reasons some families have not been located. There are 54 families from West Virginia that have not been located. There are two families from Taylor County that has not been located.

When the remains are recovered and identified they will be returned to the family for proper burial. I am just an old (76 years) Combat Veteran out of the Korean War and thankful that I did return. I consider this a very noble cause and I hope that you can help in some way to find these families. For more information on the project you may go to http://www.jpac.pacom.mil/. My part in the program is to match up the lost families with the proper agency.

I will be grateful for any assistance in locating these families.

Harold Davis
40th Infantry Division
Korea ’52-‘53
910-791-2333
hgdavis@bellsouth.net
I've seen it spelled so many ways... (even Spdfrae!)

My great Uncle John Spadafora was born in 1883. He came to the USA in 1900 at the age of 17 (single at the time).

I found a John Spadafora who was married to Mary and lived in Flemington, Taylor WV. At some point after the 1930 census, my Uncle moved to MI. John and his family are from San Giovanni in Fiore, Italy.

The John (that may be him) in the 1920 census was a merchant of a general store.. then a miner in 1930. He had many children. I have a photo of him at http://spadafore.8k.com (a free website). I have reason to believe he is buried in the Janes Memorial Cem. in Taylor Co. Thomas and Eunice are the parents of Thomas H. Janes (Jr.) b. 1835 married to Melinda/Malinda ?
does anyone have information to Melinda/Malinda's maiden name? They resided most all of their married lives in Taylor Co. and maybe born there when Taylor was part of Monongalia and Harrison Co. Thomas Sr, Eunice, Thomas Jr. and Melinda/Malinda are listed on the Taylor census' starting with 1850 and on. Does anyone have a more detailed list of the burials in Janes Memorial Cem. than the one that appears on the Taylor Site? It's only a partial listing. Can anyone help me? Any info would be greatly appreciated.
Thank you, Jana Jaynes Thomas

Also in the household is a Jeremiah McDaniel, age 65, so born 1805 in Penn. I suspect I have this line back for several generations, but need to confer with someone directly knowledgeable about the family.

I saw in the Social Security Death Index that Lester Austin of Grafton, WV died 15 April 1995. I'd like to find an obituary or a relative to determine if he is the son of John Austin, born 1887, to John Samuel and Bertha ( Wilhide? ) Austin.

John was reared by maternal relatives, Richard and Mary Jane Tutt and their son Alderson Tutt. near Pruntytown, WV. I think this John Austin married Hazel Summers and had Lester and a daughter Charlotte, born about 1913. Hazel was listed as a widow in 1920, and the two children lived with grandfather James H. Summers.

I saw this message posted for January of 2006 with a couple of responses. Just thought that I might add some facts if you like. Maude Norris was my Mother's sister. All the children listed are my first cousins. It seems strange to see some of their names listed as first names when they were called by their middle names. Mabel, Clara, Letha, Eileen (listed as Wanda), Ralph, Katie--or correctly Kathryn--(listed as Sarah, Robert, and Helen. Where is Richard on your list? Dick died at Thanksgiving in 2005. Helen Ruth died a couple of weeks ago. I can give you much if you need or want it. Elaine Woodyard Lehr

Been round and round with census and having a terrible time trying to pin down this couple.
According to their daughter's obituary, Prudence Reese Brown, who died in June 1942, it states that Prudence was born in Taylor Co in 1862 and stayed in the area all her life.
I thought I should have been able to locate them in the 1870 census; however, not so.

Can't locate a place of burial for William or Martha, as of yet.

Working completely in the dark, as I don't even have an age bracket to work in. I always use 20 yrs of age as a possible age for a first child born; making William having to be born at least in the 1835 to 1842 year range. It hasn't, as yet, been awful helpful.

any thoughts greatly appreciated.
Hello,

I am looking for links to Virgile Cooper who was married to Catherine Peters. Virgile and Catherine were originally from Rockbridge County, Virginia. They had the following children: Mary Jane (b. 1856), Alfred (b. 1858), Eulyses Grant (b. 1867), Sarah E. (b. 1871), Samuel (b. 1874), and Ida B. (b. 1876).

I do not know when Virgile moved to Taylor County, but he resided in Knottsville in the 1900 census. I also believe Virgile had the following brothers: Westley, William, Joseph, Alfred C. and Aldrich. If you have any information on this Cooper family, I would love to hear from you and am willing to share what I have. THANKS!

Linda

BURIAL PERMITS give useful information; a little thought of research tool. I have traveled through Grafton this past summer and was able to see his old house (yes, its still there!) and where he is buried, but I only had a few hours to look and was not able to do any research. My grandfather told me he was a delegate to a convention before the civil war and was a prisoner in the Confederate prison in Salisbury NC. His cousin was T. Bailey Brown.I believe he died around 1915 and was married to a Sarah Hamilton.

Would anyone remember the name and family of Reuben Davisson (his wife was Zerviah Bartlett Davisson and both are buried at Walnut Grove Cemetery in Webster) ? They had a large brick home a few miles south of Webster along Route 250 in Taylor County West Virginia just about one or two miles north of the Barbour County line. This brick home burned down around or before 1900 and was replaced by another home but you can still see the foundation walls, some of the outbuildings, and stone retaining walls, steps and walkway that are close to the road. I have some information on this family but am hoping to learn more. Also would anyone know about an old Davisson Family Cemetery that I learned from an article that was west of the home site along the old dirt road to Simpson WV that vanished years ago and is now a field of alfalfa? I appreciate any information or direction along these regards. Thank you.
Robert Ward

Camp Chase, OH

My great great grandfather was reportedly taken to Camp Chase from Preston county for the same reason. I have written the national archives, but they have no record of this. Are there any records for those who did not die?
