I have collected several old emails which seem to indicate a migration of a John Glendenning family from the Fauquier Co VA Glendennings migrated with his wife Margaret and children to Taylor/Mon Co in the early 1800s.

This appears to be a lost branch so I would be very interested in exchanging Glendenning family information with any Taylor Co researcher but especially those with the following names in their tree:

George m. Hannah Keener 1794 Fauquier Co VA
Sarah m. John Shahan
Martha(?) m. Aaron Luzader Jr
Eleanor m. Abraham Johnson
Margaret (Peggy) m. Stephen Poe 1799 Fauquier Co VA
James m. Mary Diana Vanhorn
Ann m. David Henry
Nancy m. Wm Ellis (possible daughter)

Thanks in advance, Lisa

You have Margaret (Peggy) Glendenning m. Stephen Poe 1799 Fauquier, VA. I have Margaertte Peggy Glendenning m. Stephen W. Poe 10/29/1799 Fauquier, VA and information on their 11 children. After Peggy died, c. 1826, Stephan married Mary Rogers and they had 10 children. This is a tota of 21 children over 48 years with only onr set of twins! The Poes and my Murphys emigrated to western VA and beyond where they were frequently intermarried.
Contact me for additional information.

Hi,

I descend from Stephen Poe and Margaret Glendening. I have been collecting a few things. Some say she was the sister of a George and John Glendening also in Taylor county. I have found a few things on them in the court records, but nothing to tie them together definately. I was wondering how Margaret - Peggy - plugs into the Glendening family. Can you fill me in? If interested, I could send the few things that I have come up with on George and John.

Thanks,

Ted Weaver

Lydia Harrison Poe, Stephen's sister was my GGGGrandmother. I have Margarette. b. 1778, d. c. 1826 and marrying Stephen in Fauquier on 10/20/1799.

I also have a Mary "Molly" Murphy, b. 1813, daughter of Marchal Murphy and Susannah Bragg marrying George Glendenning.

The Poe and the Murphy families intermarried in Fauquier County, VA and later in Monongahela WV. and I suspect when they both moved to Scotland County. MO

Olin,
I have seen a lot of different conclusions drawn about the Poes between different geneologists. They usually agree back to Samuel Poe 1738-1819, who had a son Stephen W. Poe 1770-1772 (who married Margaret Glendening). Their son was Stephen W. Jr. Poe who married Elizabeth Vincent, their daughter was Elizabeth Poe who married John Weaver. They were my great grandparents. I see a Lydia, daughter of Stephen W. Poe and Margaret Glendening (but not as a sister of Stephen Poe). It is not as if I actually did any research to get these names. I just wrote them down. However, in my notes, I do see a Lydia Poe marrying the Murphy that you mentioned, so I am sure that you are right. I did not have have anything on her. I would not mind your filling me in on her children.

However, this was first about Glendennings. I have never seen a geneology on Glendenings. I have seen one on the Charleston WV Clendenings - old Archabald and his brother. I figure they are the same clan if one goes back another 100 years or so. The Glendenings seem to be out of Norther VA and PA. I have seen an unverified ref. that Margaret (Peggy) Glendening's father was John. Here are some mor:
Oct 14, 1765 James Clenanen married Isabel Houston Cumberland Co. PA bond.
Nov 8 1769 Thomas Clendedin married Lydia Heslet PA marriage lic.
Feb 25 1779 Elizabeth Clendeddin from John Clendennin married.
Ca 1780 John, Mathew and James Clendenin on a list of rev war soldiers from N. Carolina.
1790 PA census Clendenin: Cumberland Co, John, John, Robert, Adam, James. Northumberland Co. John, Mufflin Co. James., cumerland co again - Samuel, Philadeplhia Co - Elizabeth, John. York Co. David Clendenin.
1791 George Clendenin and Daniel Boone were elected to the VA legislature.
1791 Jan 20 Archibald McCullough married Isabella Clendenin. Cumerland co. marriage bonds.
1798 June 12 James Clendennin married Rebecca Armstrong Cumberland Co. Bonds.
Lydia Poe arried David Mrphy Dec 27, 1797.
1800 census John Glendenning Brook Co., a Samuel Glendening, Alexander and William G.

This is getting a bit crazy. I guess I have more notes than I thought. I would attach a word document with the info, but this board will not allow that. Consider firing off your email address to me and I will do that.

I noticed a few years back there was a Paris Glendening, governer of MD. I suspect that he plugs into us.

Lisa,

It's been a while since your posting. I hope you still have the same email address or check this board regularly.

I THINK I'm descended from John Shahan and Sarah Glendenning. I know I'm descended from Sidney Shahan, born March 27, 1828 whom I believe to be their daughter. According to "An Early History of the Shahan Family, 1678-1920" by Elizabeth Shahan, John and Sarah were married in Monongalia County, WV and had four children as of the 1830 census. The youngest female was born 1825-1830 and I believe this to be Sidney. It appears that John died before the 1840 census.

The next information that I've found for a person that is most likely Sidney is in 1846 in Boone Co., KY. It's a marriage for "Sidna Shahan" and consent is given by Sally Shahan. The marriage date is the one that is associated with Sidney marrying my great-great grandfather, David Gates. Only the groom is another David - David Williams. Then in 1850, Sidney (name spelled incorrectly again) is in Cincinnati with the Gates family and her first two children. My speculation is that David Williams died because he dropped out of the Boone County tax records.

I also found something that led me to believe Sarah remarried in Kentucky. I'll look for it and add it to this thread if I find it.

Any help you or anyone else could provide in proving this would be very much appreciated. I have lots of information on Sidney's descendents. And I've been in contact with a gentleman who may be Sidney's brother's descendent.

Thanks.
Julia

Lisa...I know it's been years since your posting on the Glendennings, but, I'm fairly new and just ran across it..
My husbands family comes down through James and Mary Diniah Van Horn. I have alot on the family going down that line.
I actually am stuck regarding James Glendennings father and mother.
Be glad to share and compare. You can contact me directly at mbkk@thegrid.net.
