I received a photocopy of a page of a book (no reference - only that it is page 13 and it has a hand written notation, "Smith Cemetery") from the Taylor County Historical Society. It names 18 Union soldiers who are buried at Smith Cemetery and states their graves have never been decorated on Memorial Day. The soldiers named are: James T. Smallwood, Robert Crayton, John Hawkins, John Behen, Samuel McAtee, John Wheeler, Joseph A. Roe, Benjamin Atherton, William Atherton, Frank Berber, Sanford Vandervort, George Brenard, Emory Behen, William Sinsel, John Crawford, Benjamin Hill, Frederick Bartlett and ??. (The 18th name must be on p. 14).
Can anyone tell me the source of this page and the date it was written? I would l like to know if it sparked any action? Have the graves ever been decorated on Memorial Day? If not, please remember the soldiers today.

Am quite interested in the Smith cem and the 18 Union soldiers buried there. I have a friend who is Graves Registrar for union soldiers in the Sons of Union Veterans of the Civil War. He may be vitally interested in this too. Can you give me any more details about this cemetery? Location, etc. Thanks much. Lou Smith

My Grandmother and I have did a cemetery reading on Smith Cemetery and we keep it up to date. In 1999 my Grandmother, My husband, father-in-law, daughter, and I began decorating the graves of all veterans in this cemetery. Two large American Flags and two patriotic ribbons will greet you at the entrance of the Abraham Smith Cemetery on Memorial Day weekend. Also, all soldiers graves are decorated with a small American Flag. Only 25 soldiers graves have been found, so the other 16 flags are placed at the entrance on the cemetery with a memorial sign. Flags were donated in 1999 by Virginia "Tootsie" Robinson, a member of the Ladies Auxiliary to the VFW, Memorial City Post #3081. Here is the list of Civil War Veterans that we have listed in the Abraham Smith Cemetery:

Behen (no stone found), Frank Berger, George Brainard (no stone found), Benjamin Burdett, John W. Crawford, Robert Crayton, John Hawkins (no stone found), Benjamin Hill, Samuel McAtee (no stone found), Joseph Roe, Harmon Sinsel, William Sinsel, Charles Smallwood, James T. Smallwood, Sanford Vandervort (no stone found), John Wheeler (no stone found), and William Wheeler.

If anyone know of any way that we could get stones or some kind of reconition for these soldiers we'd like to know.

Hey Pam, how are you doing? I had gotten my gr gr grandfather another gravestone thru the VA. I'm sure your gramma had told you, i had sent his military papers to the VA requesting a military marker since his was so deteriorated, he is also in the Smith Cemetery. I'm sure if we contact the VA with a request that they will honor these men with a gravestone. Let me know if you want me to help, I know you're not doing much lately with genealogy, but let me know.
