I have a frustrating snippet from an obituary. One branch of my CADY family from upstate NY & Michigan managed to marry a gentleman from Virginia. Her name was Marjanna, Morya Ann, Margianna or Margery Ann, depending on the source. She married Joseph PAYNE. One of their daughters, Marya Ella or Margaretta (it ran in the family) went back up north to marry her cousin. When she died her obit mentioned Mrs. Ella MCCULLOCK, who was in Hinton, Summers, WV in 1908.
Does anyone have a MCCULLOCK who married a PAYNE? Marya Ella was born 1859/1860, so Mr. McCULLOCK would have been born 1849 - 1860, unles he wasn't. (Nothing is exact in genealogy.) They would have married 1879 - 1890, probably. He may have died before 1908, since they use her name. I would appreciate any details, and be happy to swap what I have on the PAYNE/CADY line..
Laura Payne's obituary:
(She died in Battle Creek, Calhoun, Michigan on 15 Feb 1908)
Laura PAYNE CADY was born near Ashland, Kentucky August 14, 1844, being a daughter of Joseph PAYNE. Her father was one of the well-known PAYNE family of Virginia and an early settler in the western part of old Virginia, which later became West Virginia. Mrs. Cady was a direct descendent of General William PAYNE, better known as "Little Joe" PAYNE of Revolutionary fame. The PAYNE family was one of the early English settlers of the Virginia colony. They have been closely identified with the history of Virginia and the nation.
She spent her girlhood days on the old plantation, which adjoined the Big Sandy River in West Virginia. [She was] Educated at the Academy for Girls at Huntington, West Virginia and then two years at a private school for young ladies at Cincinnati, Ohio.
Laura PAYNE was married to D. W. Cady, then of Rochester, New York April 12, 1865 and immediately removed to Battle Creek with her husband, where she has since made her home until her death last Saturday.
Mrs. Cady is survived by three brothers and three sisters, Mrs. Thomas Charlton of Ironton, Ohio, Mrs. Ella MCCULLOCK of Hinton, West Virginia, Mrs. B. B. Burke of St. Petersburg, Florida and William, Alexander and Arthur, all of Kenova, West Virginia.
