I am a descendant of the John N & Sarah (Myers) McClelland Family.
John James Sands and Sarah E Sands are both buried in Wright Cemetery Roane County, West Virginia. This is stated on Sadie Sands' death certificate.

Hannah (McClelland) Sands died after her husband. On John Sands' death certificate it states marital status "married"
Wife's name Mrs. J J Sands

I am also looking for Hannah's death information.

Clover, WV is also known as Looneyville. The Looney family owned several hundreds of acres, back in the time that they lived in this ares in the 1800's. Today it's called Clover, WV. There is 3 Bowens in Clover Cemetery. From Ripley, to Clover Cemetery, take the interstate go to Charleston, take the interstate toward Clarksburg, get off of the Amma Exit, turn right, go pass the Exxon Station, stay on the road that you are on, it is bumpy "road not good" you will come to a intersection, you will see Geary Mid. School on the right. You want to turn left at that intersection. You will pass up Left Hand, WV. You are on the right road. The road is curvey and hilly. Keep going. The cemetery on the left side of the road, near a church. You can't miss it, it is a huge cemetery. There is smaller cemeteries in Looneyville, need to go on findagrave.com cemetery lookups in roane county.

Hello, I'm related to the James Harvey Dodd that married to Mary Susan Henderson Dodd, James Harvey Dodd, dad is William Dodd born in 1822, Virginia, he married Sarch C. Robinson in 12 January, 1856, Greenbrier co, she was born in 1824-1908, she died in her 80's in Roane County. Wm Dodd parents are John Dodd 1786-1880 married to Sarah Stone 1798-1882. The Dodd's I came from came from Bath Co, VA. There are several William Dodds, there is another William Dodd that's buried in Roane County, but he would be much younger than the one that I have, his son is living still living, I know them. He might be the one that you seen in the 1880 census, they are probably distance cousins somewhere.

Both of these men are listed in 1880 census for Roane County. William Dodd married Sarah and has John A. Ruth, and James. He was born in 1822 in Va. His parents are John Dodd 1786 and Sarah Stone 1798. Now Wm C Dodd, is also William Dodd he is married to Malinda Skaggs and has Lucy, William R, Catherine and Peter. He was born in 1817. Many people on this site are linking them together and making them the same man. They are not. Wm C Dodd was born in Va and moved to Roan county in the census he is 63 yrs old and lives with Malinda 66 ( 1880 Roane county ) and William Dodd was born in Va also but in the census he is 58 and married to Sarah. Exact same time 2 different men. It is very important because I am related to Peter Dodd the son of Wm C Dodd and I married the great great great great grandson of William Dodd. I really need to figure out who my William Dodd born 1817 is? who are his parents? I can not find a death certificate or birth. I need help , I have spent days and days. If anyone has anything please help!!!!

The Sons of the Grand Army of the Republic (SGAR)is made up on men age 16 or older who have a direct or collateral (i.e. uncle) who served solely and honorably for the Union federal forces of the Civil War. It is currently forming a new "camp" in Spencer. Unlike the Sons of Union Veterans which is NOT a hereditary society as it lets anyone join, the SGAR is a true hereditary society. Unfortunately this book is inaccessible to be since I am in Tacoma, WA and the library does not do Interlibrary Loan of their genealogy holdings. I am hoping to find someone that can photocopy the first 10 pages of this book (including cover and publication info) and mail that to me.
I am in search for the person who has William Y Smith's sword from the Civil War. My uncle told me that the last he heard was that Mark Smith is in possesion of the sword. Mark Smith is a descendant of William through his oldest son John. If anyone knows how I can reach Mark or if you know that someone else is in possesion of the sword, please let me know. Thanks

I think this is the notice I found at the Calhoun County website, so it was probably from that county's newspaper. That may be the only record to be found, but I thought a Roane newspaper might be more thorough, especially if there was an actual obituary purchased in the newspaper.

I found what looks like a newspaper notice in a Rootsweb entry for William but no mention of his wife is made.It is probably from the Roane newspaper. It reads as follows:

McCULTY, WM. 5/18/1897:

Wm. McCulty, for many years prominent in political circles in this county died at his home in Roane county April 24th. He was the father of J.W. and Frank McCulty and Mrs. Francis Hathaway, all of this county. He was in his 80th year at the time of his death and had been a member of the M.E. Church about 63 years.

Don't know if this helps but thought I would post it in case you had not run across it.

Good luck with this effort.

Thank you. I thought that Slate Church Cemetery was probably the same as the Bowers/Rogers. I have had success so many times with finding records at Find-a-Grave that I have to remind myself that there are a great many graves not listed. I am trying in my home county to contribute records for all of the unmarked graves that I know of.

William McCulty died 24 April 1897. I found this information at the Calhoun County website, I believe. Apparently there is another set of records kept at the county level (?)other than the death and birth certificates which can be found online at the WV Archives site, because there is no listing for for William in the death index. Ann Jemima died 13 July 1904. She is listed in the death certificate index, but no parents are listed; however, at some point I found in a transcribed book of death records for Roane County that her father was Dave Moore. I've seen other family trees listing her maiden name as Ratliff.

I would appreciate if you could check for obituaries for these two; please don't make a special trip for me -- just if you get a chance sometime when you are at the library doing your own research. I'll be happy to reimburse you for your time and expense.

Hello, a lot of the cemeteries around Roane County on findagrave are incomplete. I know that cemetery (it is near my parent's house) and there are way more than the 40 +/- people listed on findagrave buried there.

I looked in the Cemeteries of Roane County Vol. II. which has the Slate/Bowers/Rogers Cemetery.

In Vol II, page 26, your William McCulty is listed as Wm. McCulty 1819-1897 and on the same page is Anna J. McCulty 1824-1904.

Hope this helps.

The Roane County Reporter/The Times Record no longer has a "real" website. It has been under construction for over a year now. Our County Clerk doesn't have obituaries in their office. As for the newspapers being on microfilm, they are but there is no index for obituaries. The microfilm is located in the Historical Society room in the basement of the Roane County Library.

Do you have an approximate date of death for William in 1897. I could look and see if I could find anything for you.

Melissa

Are local newspapers/microfilm available for this time period and, if so, are the obituaries indexed? William M. McCulty died in Roane County in 1897, according to his tombstone. His wife, Ann Jemima McCulty, died 13 Jul 1904 in Schilling. I found a death index listing online for Ann Jemima, but nothing for him. I would like to obtain obits for both of them. Would I contact the county clerk or the genealogy society for help? Also, it seems at one time the Spencer newspaper was online at some database, but I cannot locate it now.

Thanks to you finding the Headstone of Samuel and Lydia (Headley) Santee, my ggg grandparents, I now know they died sometime in 1900. They appeared on the 1900 census, their sheet enumerated June 1st.

So they died between June 1st and the end of the year. (seven month period) Is that enough of a "round about idea" for the staff in your office to locate death certificates or would I need to narrow it down some more?

I'm just trying to figure the range of time that wouldn't cause anyone down there to hate me too much.

Thanks for your replies.
Sincerely,
Marc Carroll

I work in the Roane County Clerk's Office nearly every day. The old death records are not in a computer database in that county. They are in books and before the late 60's early 70's they aren't even indexed properly. You really need to have a good "round about" idea of when they might have died. Reason being is that some of the books aren't in any particular order other than by year and first letter of last name.

That being said the people that work in that office are very capable of looking up anything that is of record in the courthouse. They are very helpful and friendly too.

Could the Santees have lived in Reedy district?
