Jan. 3, 1852, then to Margaret Thomas Nov. 16, 1855 then to Nancy Ann Hearn-Bowie Sept. 7, 1864 all marriages took place in Washington County, Ohio. The 1850 Ritchie Co. census shows three children living with Barton and Naomi HUDKINS ( Edith's parents): Francis, age 13; Barton (my gg grandfather), age 12; and Eliza (?), age 10. We seem to have lost track of Simon and Edith..

I am looking for information about the man who is my grandmothers father, and for my great great grandparents.

My grandmother was Betty Lou Carney but she was born Betty Lou Tingler on April 19, 1934. I do not know her fathers name but her mother was Lucinda Carney (Reed). Lucinda had 9 children (Anne, Ella, Opal, Truman (Fred), Mary, James (Buck), John, Betty, & Charles(Chuck)) but only 2 youngest were born with the Tingler name (My grandmother Betty and her little brother Charles or Chuck born April 19, 1936 both born in Ritchie County.)

I am, also, looking for Lucinda's parents. All I know about her is she was born in 1896 and passed on August 19, 1975 in Toledo, Ohio. She had an older sister Neva Cunningham (Reed) who was born in 1892 and married Wayland Cunningham (not sure of the year). Her younger sister was Nancy Reed who was born July of 1899 and passed in '91 if I remember right. Nancy had a son Named Everet? Charles Reed (I think that was his name because we always knew him as Short) who was married to Eine before he passed not long ago. Short's daughter is Sandy and she has 2 children Charlie and Cassidy.

My mom (Dawna or Sis) said that everyone lived in Melon, Oil Ridge or Harrisville.

If you can help me with any information putting this family tree together for my children, I would greatly appreciate it. You can reply here or email me at StephanieDBrady@gmail.com

Does anyone know the location of the old Layfield Pioneer Cemetery? I have the Ritchie County Cemetery book, and it doesn't show the location on the map. It just says it's somewhere west of Glendale on Layfield Run, about 1 mile from Old Route 50. Has anyone had success finding it and the grave of Margaret Crawford Layfield?
Any help would be greatly appreciated. I would love to be able to locate it on my upcoming trip to West Virginia. Thanks.

I'm trying to verify the burial locations of my Great Grandfather William A. McPeek died July 8, 1905, his daughter Ethel McPeek died August 16, 1905 and his son Donald L. McPeek died July 1, 1911.
Family info is that William is buried at the EUB church in Pennsboro. I believe that his daughter and son are also buried there. I have been to the church which is no longer opened for services due to structural problems. There are no tombstones for William or his children but I know that William never had a stone.
I'm sure that the EUB church records would list all those buried at the church. Can anyone help me?
Thank you, Fred McPeek

Hi, I'm looking for any info on the Nutt family in Harrisville and any info on the Harrisville area. My grandfather was Guy Nutt and his father was Orlando Guy. My grandfather died when I was 4 and didn't live near me. My father doesn't remember much about Harrisville as he only visited a few times when he was very young. So, basically I know nothing about this side of my family. I'd love to hear from anyone with any info.
Thanks.

My trip to Ritchie County

I just had to let everyone know what a wonderful trip I had to this glorious county and talk about it's awesome people.
First let me brag about the Heritage Inn. I originally had reservations there, but unfortunately for me, I have trouble climbing steps. The suite of rooms that she had set up there is superb (my daughter told me all about it). An old fashioned setting, with all the modern convieniences. Four poster beds and all. But since we couldn't stay, this kind and generous lady (innkeeper), called the lodge for us and got us rooms there.
So we were extremely late getting settled in (3pm), but I called Mr. Jones at the Historical Society and he told us that that was fine, just come on over.
The Old Stone House is a Don't Miss type of place. They have a good library and about 26 or more rooms done in historical type stuff. Super place!
I can't say enough good things about the folks of the Historical Society. Mr. Jones was extremely helpful, David Scott found me at the Lodge and offered help with any info that I might need.
I found the Haught Family book (that I didn't know existed) at the Historical Society, that has many many pictures of my family, that I had never seen before from about 1900 to 1920. And Mr. Jones made copies for me. And I finally found the Phillips Cemetery, waaaay up on the mountain. Actually my daughter did the climbing.
One big FIND for me was that there is a headstone in the Phillips Cemetery for my great grandparents, Sanda & Sarah Smith Scott. When Francis read the cemetery for the Historical Society Cem Book, it was so overgrown that she couldn't see it, but it has since been cleaned up a bit, and there it was. And there are pictures of Sandy & Sarah in the Haught Book, so for the first time i got to see what Sarah looked like. What a faboulous Trip. Thanks in a big way to the Ritchie Co., Historical Society.

All the children were born in Ritchie Co, WVA and in the 1880 census the last name is listed as Ritchards.
Layfield Property near Den and Addis Run

Do any Layfield descendents know the year that John J. Layfield, Sr. purchased and settled the old Layfield farm near Addis Run, south of Harrisville.
I have an approximate range of years he might have, but would love to know what year it was. I'm making a trip up to Parkersburg and Harrisville next month. I plan to check the Ritchie County Courthouse, but it doesn't look like their records go back far enough.
Any assistance or information would be greatly appreciated.
Pisgah one roomed school? I was located near the present church and was used during the 1890-1900's. Would love to see any old pictures. Some students that I know who attended there were: J. O. (Cooster) Nay, his sister Osra Nay Clayton, James A. Wilson, and the children of John A. Cross. Olive Elder Cottrill taught there. Thanks. Jean Moore

Many of their descendants lived in or around Calhoun, Doddridge, Gilmer, Ritchie & Wirt Counties. Their sons included: Isaac, George Washington Jr., John, Benjamin Franklin, William M., Michael M., Jacob, Elias Coleman, James and Judge Nelson Richards. Don't know if you tie into this family? Please go to the reunion website ( http://therichardsfamilyreunion.com ) and check out some family history. If you are still in doubt, feel free to contact the website administrator, she'll be glad to help you figure it out!

There will be a silent auction and gift exchange to help raise money toward next year's reunion. We also encourage all Richards family history researchers to bring their reports, photos, notebooks and records. There are definite family connections being made at this reunion so bring anything you have that may be of interest to other's in our Richards family.

We look forward to seeing this reunion grow, so please bring your family, a covered dish or dessert and something for the White Elephant Gift Exchange and join us in an afternoon of visiting & fun!

Events we have planned:
SATURDAY, AUG. 4TH:
10:00 a.m. Trip to George Washington Richards Sr.'s gravesite.

SUNDAY, AUG. 5TH:
11:00 a.m. Reunion gathering at North Bend, shelter #3.

I would love to have any information regarding Goose Creek. My grandfather was from there and my grandmother was from Petroleum. This marriage was Daniel to Julia Varner. My great grandmother, Elizabeth Varner raised 18 chilren in Petroleum.
The following names are names that I know of that are connected to my family: Donnelly, Varner, Deem, Harris, Adams, Bell, Smith, Rinehart, Metz, Sims, and many family friends such as "Swisher", Babe DeVaughn, Mike Smith, and many others. My grandfather owned over 400 acres on Goose Creek, but his children/wife sold it after his death. His driveway was right at the "Kelly Bend" where motorists had to beep their horns to let any oncoming traffic know that they were coming also. Turning right onto my grandfather's property was close to the "Kelly Hole" on Goose Creek. I would love to know what the name Kelly has to do with any Goose Creek association.
I have a picture of students/teachers from Goose Creek School,(about 1915).
Thank you,
BMercer

There are pages of hand-written, dated messages that I had to share in case anyone might be related to anyone who wrote in this book. I'm attaching a page I already scanned fyi.

Swisher (Olin?)

I responded to a previous posting regarding a gentleman only known to me as "Swisher." Looking through the obits and seeing the name Olin sparked the idea that this might be his first name. I asked my mother who also thinks his first name was Olin. This man would visit my grandfather, Daniel Donnelly, on Goose Creek, and I was often there when he visited. My grandfather owned 400+ acres on Goose Creek and although he rasied his family in Ohio, he kept the family property and retired to Goose Creek. "Swisher" worked for my grandfather at the Bernard Pipeline Company in Akron Ohio. I have a very nice picture of "Swisher" that I would love to scan and pass on to any family member.
thanks... bmercer
