Hi Cathy,
I just read your reply about sharing what you know. Do you by chance have any information regarding David H. Chipps 1801-1861, son of Matthias Chipps and Rachel Sutton, that you could share? I have been trying to prove that he was married first, to Sarah Gaddis 1801-1823 and that they had a child together, Harvey Chipps 1823-1847. I believe Sarah Gaddis Chipps may have died when her son, Harvey Chipps was born. She is buried in the Great Bethel Baptist Church Cemetery.

I believe David H. Chipps then married Susannah Thompson in PA in 1825, before moving to MO. Harvey Chipps 1823-1847 died while serving in the Mexican War. I believe he is buried in Mexico.

I have been trying to prove this connection for some time, now. I have been unsuccessful in getting help to look up marriage, birth and death records from the Great Bethel Baptist Church in Fayette, PA. Anything you could tell me would be most appreciated.

Hello,
Sorry, I have only just picked this up. I am grandaughter of Mary Ritchie, sister of William Herbert. I know a great deal about the family of their mother, Mary Battle after they came to Manchester in the 1820s. I also know a great deal about the Ritchies: my mum is one of the surviving grandchildren of John Charles and Mary and we have lots of photos and documents if you are interested. I know less about the Irish background: Mary Kavanagh (or Cavanagh) and her husband John Battle came to Manchester in the 1820s. Their son Farrell, who was our GG grandfather was already born in Ireland. I know a great deal about Farrell's life and that of his family if you are interested. Could I ask you for the names of your line back to WHR? My mum will be thrilled to hear about you! I have some very nice pictures of the family, including John Charles and Mary's 50th wedding anniversary in 1927. My email is e.newby@kpnmail.nl
Look forward to hearing from you.
Liz

Goose Creek is not a town, it's an actual creek and a road runs through there. It may have been a town years ago but not now. It's close to Nutter Farm. On a map of WV find Rt. 50 east from Parkersburg to Nutter Farm and Goose Creek Rd. runs north and south right in that area.

I sent a response, but it never showed up on the board, so I'll try again.
Absalom HULDERMAN is my ggggrandfather. He was born in 1820, married 3 wives. the second of which was Nancy Reece, born in 1818 in Virginia. In the list you sent, for which I thank you, the Nancy E. Hulderman, born in 1857. in the 1860 census is the youngest of the two daughter that Nancy Reece had with Absalom. The other daughter, Mary M. Hulderman born in 1855, is my gggrandmother. The remaining children ae those of Absalom and his first wife, Drusilla (KING) Hulderman.

In the 1870 census, that family consists of the children Absalom had with his 3rd wife, Helen A.((NAY) Hulderman with the exception of the last two, Mary M. amd Nancy E. from his previouds marriage.

Sorry this has taken so long for my response (I've been away for month) but, if you have any question, please feeL free to ask.

freinman

Can anyone please give me directions to the Goff Cemetery located in or near Hazelgreen [Justus Goff & David McDonald among those buried there]? Per the Ritchie County Cemetery book, the cemetery is located above the old Hazelgreen School between County Routes 19 and 19/10. We tried to locate the cemetery last year to take pictures, but could not find the cemetery. We plan to make a return visit to the area this summer. Any help is greatly appreciated, Cindy

Thank you so much for replying.
The marriage information I obtained was on the US Gen Web site in 2005 from a Newsletter (July-August 1974) by the Ritchie County Historical Society. They were married 18 May 1854 at the home of her father Daniel Wilson. She was born 25 April 1834 (parent Daniel and Jane Wilson)and Thomas was also born about 1834 (parents John and Nancy Cain). Both were born in Ohio.

The last census before their marriage was in 1850 and as you noted she is living with her parents.

I have traced most of the family members and have death dates for all, except Sarah and an older brother Samuel. She is not listed in the death records on line at wvculture.org. Some counties do not have records on line. Sometimes the records are not the complete set.

She is listed on the application papers her mother filed to collect a government pension through her son, Joseph M. Wilson, who died in Andersonville. He was born on 8 September 1837. The 1850 census states in VA but it also states the same for Sarah, who said she was born in Ohio when she got married. The family was living in Ohio in 1832 and later went to Virginia. I don't know when they actually moved from Ohio to Virginia. Joseph was single and supported his parents. Jane applied after the death of her husband Joseph. The living children of Jane were listed and Sarah is one of them. Unfortunately, there is no list of where the children are living.

I have tried to find them in VA/WV, OH, and PA where other family members lived but had no luck. So, I wrote the query. I will keep trying. My collateral searches have helped me find some others and I'll keep plugging along.

Thanks.

I am looking for information of Thomas and Sarah CAIN. Sarah is the daughter of JANE and DANIEL WILSON. Thomas is the son of NANCY and JOHN CAIN. They married on 18 May 1854 at the home of Daniel in Ritchie County, WV. In 1871 Sarah is still alive but I do not know where she was living. She is mentioned in a pension petition for her mother Jane who was trying to collect her son's pension(he had died in the Civil War and never been married). I don't know if they moved to a nearby county or out of state. I can't seem to find them after their marriage. Thanks for reading.

Our Chipps are somewhat different or at least divergent lines. David's ancestor would have been Matthias Chipps, who was also a stone mason. Matthias was definitely the brother of Morris (Rev War pension papers of Morris' widow and children) which places him firmly into the NJ Chipps family. They were probably the sons of John and Jannetje. She has a Dutch name and so obviously seems Dutch. Some say she was a Lane (von Lainen) but I've not seen the supporting evidence so won't claim this. Also, the online von Lainen community seems never to have heard of a Jannetje who married a Chipps, which might or might not mean anything. Some assume John was also Dutch but again, I've not seen the evidence. There is some evidence he might have been Palatine (German) possibly having moved to the Netherlands before coming here, maybe he was born in Holland of Palatine parents. I'd have to dig through my papers to find it now but I did find 2 possibilities for John among the online books of emigrants in the early 18th century. Both were Palatines who sailed to America from Rotterdam (which might be the reason people decided he was Dutch.) Anyway, my Thomas Chipps might have also been a son of John and Jannetje. They did have a son named Thomas, but there are about 20 years between his christening and his appearance in Preston/Monongalia Co VA/WV as what appears to be an adult. There are no records that I have seen which make the connection between the two Thomas Chipps, one in Morris or Sommerset Co NJ and the other in Monongalia Co VA, part of that time in chat later became Preston Co (both in areas that became part of WV). So, I am still stuck at trying to define this connection. You don't need to worry about this as your line is much clearer. -------Jo

My gggg grandfather was David H. Chipps 1801-1861. I believe he was married to Sarah Gaddis 1801-1823 before 1823 in Fayette, Pennsylvania. She is buried in the Great Bethel Baptist Church Cemetery as Sarah Chipps. I believe she died after her son, Harvey Chipps was born in 1823 and that David H. Chipps made her headstone.

David Chipps then married Susannah Thompson in 1825 in Pennsylvania. In the next census, of 1830, there is a male between the ages of 5-9, who is living in the household that I believe to be David's son, Harvey Chipps, who would be about 7 years old. The sons of Susanna Chipps would be too young to be this child in the census.

Harvey Chipps married Jane Hagan and had 2 children, John H. Chipps and Sarah Margaret Chipps Brownfield. Harvey Chipps served in the Mexican War and died in October of 1847.

I would be happy to exchange more information with you if you would like.

Lisa,

I've heard similar stories about almost every line I have that ended up in that area, but I've never found anything to prove it. I have serious doubts that it's true, although you could have one of your male descendants of Jeremiah Valentine Lamm tested and they could tell you if there is any percent of Native American in the line. I think the "story" behind it is much, much more prevalent in those families who ever lived in Pocahontas County... but my grandmother never told me anything about any of the Lamm family being descended from Native Americans. I have always been told that the Lamm family came over from Scotland, but I don't even know if that's ever been proved, but it's what my grandmother was told by her parents, and so on.

FYI, I have Lydia's middle name as Margaret.

The Lamb/Lamm name is traced back to Pocahontas Co., W.V. but I don't know where they originally came from. The "Indian" background has never been proved. It hard to find anything that links them to a tribe.
I was incorrect about the name of my great grandmother(Floe's mother). yesterday my aunt told me that she thought her name was Eliza. After I sent you this post I did more searching online and found out her name was Lydia Richards. My father was Carl Gatrell. He was one of eight children from Floe (Lamm) Gatrell and Lawrence Gatrell. Their other children's names are Phyllis, Lorena,Jerry, Leslie, Marilyn, Richard, and Tim.
Thanks for the info. I am really interested in researching my ancestory but not quite sure where to start. Do you have any idea what the ethnic backgrounds are? my Aunts tell me that Jeremiah had Indian in him. Do you know?
Thanks. Lisa
