Question about Dr. C.F. Stucky HELVETIA W.V.

Dr Christian Friedrich Stucki (Stucky) b abt 1821 d in Helvetia, WV abt 1889 is the first cousin to my great great grandmother, Barbara Stucki, of Switzerland.
I have recently learned that he was established as a doctor in WV and my great grandfather, John Ischer, at the age of 17, stayed with him for a couple of years betw 1881-1883 before migrating to Ridgeway, NC.

What I don't understand... where did Dr Stucky's family go? Dr CF Stucky was married to a Barbara Krebs. They had at least 8 children when they came to US, but the only ones I find mentioned in Helvetia are Gustave and a son named Henry (who I believe may have been born in US). Another son, Emil, was a pharmacist in PA.

I think Dr Stucky migrated to WV about 1872-1873. At the time, he would've still had young children in the home. I show no record of his wife or other children in WV. Did his wife return to Switzerland with some of the children? Did he lose some of his family to tragedy? I know he practiced medicine for about 10 years in at least one other state, possibly Ohio, but Ohio searches have not shown up anything. Please email me with any information you might find.

barbswire532@comcast.net

I have a lot of Louk, Ware pictures passed down to me. I know who some of the people are but many are a mystery. I am descendant of William Loucks, and Margaret Liter, and Richard and Polly Ware. I was wondering if anyone out there knows of a place where I could post the pics for some identification and sharing. The thing I hate on genealogy is, that I work and I get to do this sometimes then I get busy, get off track for awhile, then get back to it and everyone is gone. My name is Shauna and I have been on and off the Louk board, made contact with some folks but now they all seem to have disappeared. Well..I'd like to get started again.

At the death of Jesse in 1935 Molly was living in Renicks, Greenbrier Co. She could have married a S. Johnson. She also had a brother, John Davis, and at that time he also lived at Renicks. They were the children of Jesse and Elizabeth [Vance] Davis of Pendleton Co. At one time they lived in Randolph County and Tucker County.

Our relatives lived heavily in Randolph County, and I have a hunch that if he could look in the area for obituararies he might be very successful.
I used to do that here in Sacramento but I need someone who can get him started in Kerens or Montrose or something, We have many Hicks and Vanscoy and Wilmoth relatives in common, please give me your best advice and I will pass it along to him
Harmon was born possibly 1820 or shortly thereafter. Some indicators are that Jonathan Wamsley married Hannah Newlon, about 1817 and he is possibly their only child. If this is so Hannah may have died at the time of Harmon's birth or shortly thereafter. In 1850 Harmon married Rebecca Pritt and then moved to Pocahontas County and is found with his children in the 1860 and 1870 census. I have 6 children of his and the lineage almost to date. I would like to figure out his parentage, birthdate, when and where he and Rebecca died.

Gena or Cena Harman buried in the Laurel Hill Cemetery?

I found a Gena Harman in one of the Randolph Co., WV Cemetery books. She was born in 1884 and died in 1923. I wonder if there might have been a mistake made when this was transcribed or printed. Could this be Cena Harman?

This cemetery is called Laurel Hill.
Directions: From Job go to Whitmer. Cross the bridge and take a left about 4 miles up the road. Go to the Whitmer Fire Dept. and make another left. Go to the next left, take it and stay on that road to the cemetery.

If anyone lives near this cemetery, would you please, please, please take a look at this headstone. Does it say Gena or Cena? Who else is buried near her? Is there anything else on her stone? I'd really like to get a complete date of death for her. She isn't in the online records.

Your help would be very much appreciated.

I am descendant of Phillips families of Elkins, West Virginia, Randolph County West Virginia. Need anyone that can help me locate records showing my gggrandfather, Allen Phillips born prior to 1842, married twice, first Rachael Cross, daughter of Barton Howerton Cross, sister of Rev. Levi Cross and then secondly married her sister after Rachael's death. Her sister was Sara Ann Cross. He had the following children: Abram Hiram Phillips (my gggrandfather)
married Margaret Ramsey (daughter of John Jackson Ramsey & Jane Kittle); Deborah Anna Phillips married Barton Delauder,
Sallie Ann Phillips married Bud Poling, Mary Ann Phillips married Franklin Poling, William Berlm Phillips who lived to be 105 years old. His second wife bore Nancy Phillips and Balum Phillips. This is all I know of this generation. I can't get any further back. Please help.

Pamela Sue Repp (Phillips)
1405 Shelton Avenue
Nashville, TN 37216
(615) 226-1946 (home & fax)
repphome @aol.com
I am looking for information about the Newell family who moved to Beulah WV from Ridgeway PA ca. 1905-1906. Parents were John Wesley Newell and Jennie Maise (Mahood) Newell. At the time they moved to Beulah, they had three children (Jennie Maise Newell, b. 2-18-1903; William Francis Hassel Newell, b. 9-16-1905; and John James Wesley Newell, b. 9-16-1905) After moving to Beulah they had two more children (David Clyde Newell, b. 10-22-1906; and Orpha Jane Ella Newell, b. 8-25-1908). The family then moved to Blue Jay, WV where they had three more children (Alonzo Wiley, b. 4-19-1913; Elmer Edward, b. 7-3-1915; and Chester Earl (10-18-1917). They then moved to Uniontown, PA where the final three children were born (Clayton Charles, b. 9-15-1920; Harry LeRoy, b.. 9-19-1922; and Mildren Helen b. 10-2-1924). Harry LeRoy is my paternal grandfather. He married Mary Louise Caproni and had three children (Harry LeRoy, Jr., Joyce Lynn, and Anita Louise). Harry, Jr. is my father and he had four daughters (Shana Leigh, Kelly Ann, Jessi Rae and Robyn Louise).

Any information about the Newells in other branches or beyond John Wesley and Jennie Maise Newell would be greatly appreciated.

My email address is twobag10@aol.com
Shana (Newell) Sowles

Trying to find factual information on the parents of Thomas F. Phillips, also, on any brothers or sisters. Members of this family lived in Randolph, Barbour and Tucker Counties. Several researching this family have Jonathan Phillips and Hepzibah Parker as his parents. (I believed this for months.) However, after extensive research I have doubts about this being factual. I can find no proof of this and the dates don't match. I would appreciate any input from those researching this family. Recent information I have found, that would match, is the following:

Aaron Phillips, b. 1702, of York Co., VA., m. Eliza Read, 9 Feb. 1741. They resided on Crab Neck in York County. Eliza Reade was the daughter of John Reade, grandaughter of Robert and Mary (Lilly) Reade and great-granddaughter of George and Ellizabeth (Martiau) Reade. Aaron and Eliza (Reade) Phillips had the following children. (Their son Thomas's date of birth would match that of Thomas Fretwell Phillips.)

i. John Phillips, b. 9 Nov. 1741
ii. Mary Phillips, b. 16 May 1743
iii. Thomas Phillips, b. 12 April 1745
iv. William Phillips, b. 31 July 1751
v. Ann Phillips, b. 11 Nov. 1753
vi. Eliza Phillips, b. 27 April 1755

Children of Thomas Fretwell Phillips, b. 12 April 1745, and Susanna Kittle are:

i. Henry Phillips, b. 7 Jan. 1766, Barbour Co.
ii. Isaac Phillips, b. 19 Jan. 1769, d. May 1843, in Barbour Co., m. Elizabeth KIttle, 15 August 1793, in Randolph Co. (Isaac was my ggg-grandfather).
iii. Joseph Phillips, b. 26 Dec. 1769, d. 1850.
iv. John I. Phillips, b. 12 Jan. 1772, d. 25 Oct. 1848.
v. Benjamin Phillips, b. 25 Jan. 1775.
vi. William Phillips, b. 20 Dec. 1776.
vii. Susannah Phillips, b. 8 Dec. 1779, m. a ? Moore.
viii. Thomas Jr. Phillips, b. 23 Jul. 1783, m. Peggy Westfall.
ix. Moses Phillips, b. 7 Dec. 1785.

Would really appreciate input from others researching this family.

BAKER, PARSONS, SLAUGHTER

I am researching the surname BAKER, specifically a Jacob BAKER, of German heritage who may have been born of parents residing in or near to Randolph Co., VA/WV in the mid to late 1700s. It is likely that the Jacob BAKER of my focus was born either in Germany or America ca. 1770-1775. Jacob BAKER would be my 4x paternal great-grandfather.

The Jacob BAKER of my interest is thought to have married a Nancy PARSONS (daughter of Joseph PARSONS and widow of Moses SLAUGHTER) in Randolph County, VA/WV in 1800. This information comes from "The Randolph Co. Marriage Book." From Randolph Co.VA/WV this couple migrated to the area of Mason & Jackson Co. VA/WV where they lived out their lives. Nancy BAKER died between 1850-1870 and Jacob BAKER died in about 1843; both in Jackson Co. VA/WV.

The son of Nancy & Jacob BAKER was my 3x great-grandfather, Charles BAKER (1806-1902) who lived and died in Mason Co., VA/WV. Charles BAKER married a Sarah STEWART in Ripley, Jackson Co., VA/WV in 1833. I can trace my BAKER line from this point to the present.

Because I believe that my German ancestor, Jacob BAKER, came to VA/WV through either VA or PA I am writing this message in hopes that you may be able to shed some light on the PARSONS/ BAKER *problem* from the perspective of your database/resources.

I look forward to hearing from you if there is any interest or information along these lines.

I have recenly come into possession of my great grandmother's photo albums. The pictures are of the Thompson & White families of Dry Fork and surrounding areas. Unfortunately, none of the pics are labeled. Does anyone know of any sites where I could match the pics for identification, or if there are any living descendants of The John Adam Thompson family (other than my mom and uncle) who could help me out?
I also have most of the Thomas White tree including info on the Elzas & Thompsons.
My WHITE connections
Thomas White
David White
Joseph White
James B. It is listed on the WV State History and Archives website as the 107th WV Union Militia, but I was given information by Floyd Kittle stating that this unit existed well before WV even became a state, in 1860, Col. Melvin Currence is listed as commander of this unit, later Cyrus Kittle was in charge, and was adjutant, and that this unit was in fact a Confederate unit, not Union, if anyone has any more information about the 107th, I would appreciate the help, thanks, Randy

He came to Iowa about the year 1852 and was ordained as a
Methodist Episcopal clergyman, by Bishop Matthew Simpson, in 1855. His early appointments were at Troy, Montrose, Winchester, Ft. Madison, Drakeville, Albia, East Des Moines and Sigourney. While at the latter place, in
1861, he was elected to the State senate, in which body he became active and prominent, especially distinguished by his efforts to secure temperance legislation. In 1863 he was commissioned as chaplain of the 7th Iowa infantry and went to the front. Resigning in 1864, he was appointed
post chaplain to the military hospitals at Keokuk, where he remained until the close of the war. He was a popular preacher, able and eloquent, exerting a good degree of influence wherever he resided. He had long been one of
the most widely known Methodist Episcopal clergymen in the State.

Portrait and Biographical Album of Wapello County, Iowa... Chicago:
Chapman Brothers, 1887.

Rev. I. P. TETER,

Presiding Elder of the Methodist Episcopal Church in the Ottumwa District, is a native of Lewis County, Va., and was born May 11, 1829. He is a son of James and Barbara (Reger) Teter, both natives of the Old Dominion and both
now deceased. Of their five children the record is as follows: Alvah lives in Virginia; John is a large cattle-dealer in Kansas; Jacob is in Virginia; Isaac, our subject, was the fourth son; Granville is deceased.

The subject of this history grew to manhood in his native county, received careful training at the hands of most excellent parents, and obtained his early education in the common schools of that section. Early in life he determined to become a minister of the Gospel, and with that end in view closely pursued a course of Scriptural study. He was married in Buchanan, Va., Oct. 25, 1849, to Miss Rebecca Jackson, who was born July 25, 1831.
Her parents, Edward H. and Rebecca (Love) Jackson, were also natives of Virginia, and both descended from excellent families. Their household included four sons and seven daughters, as follows: Margaret married Job
Hinkle, of Virginia, who is now deceased; Sarah became the wife of William Sexton, and lives in Virginia; Mary was united in marriage with Val Strader, of Virginia; Elizabeth is deceased; John G. married Miss Salina Norman,
of Virginia; William L. is a bachelor; Minter J. married Miss Mary Cummins; Winford E. became the wife of Will S. Peterson, of Iowa; and they are now residents of Washington, D. C.; Prudence A. is deceased; the wife of
our subject was the next in order of birth; E. N. B. married a Miss Wilkinson, of Iowa, and they reside in California. Out subject and wife are the parents of two children: Joseph C., a resident of Burlington, and Frank
Elbert, of Ottumwa.

After becoming fitted for ministerial labors Mr. Teter resolved to come West for a permanent location, and accordingly, crossing the Mississippi in 1853, became identified with the Iowa Conference.

In the fall of 1861, having fully established himself in the confidence and esteem of the people of this section, and deeply interested in its welfare, he was elected to the Ninth
General Assembly of the State of Iowa, as Senator from the Sixteenth District. He fulfilled the duties of this position with great credit, and then, the Civil War being in progress, became Chaplain of the 7th Iowa Infantry and also of the United States Hospital at Keokuk. In this
capacity he sympathized with the unfortunate, cheered and encouraged the sick and wounded, and became the object of affectionate attachment by many who never lived to tell the tale.

At the close of the war Mr. Teter became Presiding Elder of the Burlington District, and since then has spent the greater part of his time in building up the cause of religion and morality. He is an earnest advocate of
prohibition, and by his influence and public speeches has contributed in no small degree to bringing the State to its present high position on the temperance question. He has taken an active interest in all matters pertaining to the general welfare of his adopted State, and has labored
with but little recompense for the good of his fellow-men. He possesses a keen insight into human nature, and has made the most of his opportunities of reading and study. He is a fluent speaker, possesses a valuable fund of
information, and without apparent effort secures the close attention of his audiences. His words are well selected and his line of argument at once takes hold of the reason and sympathy of his hearers. He has built up a good
record and made for himself hosts of friends in this county.

The Makers of Iowa Methodism ... by Aaron W. Haines. Cincinnati :
Printed for the author by Jennings & Pye, c1900.

ISAAC P. TETER

was admitted to the Conference this year on trial. He was a recent arrival from Virginia, in which State he had been born in 1829. In his sixteenth year he was converted and united with the Church, and at the age of twenty-two he was given license to preach. He spent forty-seven years
in the active work, all in the Iowa Conference, and died on his last field of labor, at New Sharon, Iowa, march 6, 1900. The incidents of his long ministry would furnish an interesting chapter in itself. In the earlier days of his experience, after riding all day in an open conveyance he
arrived at his destination, which was the new appointment to which he had been assigned. He found entertainment at the home of one of the members of the Church; but was so discouraged with the outlook and so tired that he did
not make himself known. "We are looking every minute for our preacher," said the good lady of the house; "for one of our members is to be buried to-morrow, and we are anxious that our own pastor should conduct her funeral." He learned that there was a new sect operating in that
community, which claimed a monopoly on religion, and that no one outside of their communion had any right to expect to enter heaven. If the new preacher did not come, one of these would be called upon to preach. The young man,
after hearing a statement of the condition of things, acknowledged that he was the circuit-rider whom they were expecting, and that he was there to attend the funeral, which he did the next day. This gave him a splendid
opportunity to introduce himself, which he did in a satisfactory manner. He showed the utter folly of the teachings of those who said there was no hope for the
woman who lay in the coffin before them, simply because she had not submitted to a form which they said was necessary to salvation. From that day the boy preacher held the ground in spite of all opposition. This incident illustrates the manner in which he won success everywhere he went; he made the best use of his opportunities.

Once, having subscribed one hundred dollars to the college, he knew not where it was to come from.
A wealthy man lived in the town, and, though not a member of the Church, Teter went to him, and said, "Now, I want you to pay this for me, as you are able and I am not," and the obligation was paid.

In 1862, while he was pastor in Sigourney, he was elected a State senator, and acquired some distinction in the Legislature the following winter. Later he was ommissioned as chaplain of the Seventh Iowa Infantry, and accompanied his regiment into the South, where he remained until 1864,
when , returning North, he accepted a position which had been made vacant by the death of Isaac I. Stewart, as chaplain of the military hospitals in Keokuk, where he did faithful work with the sick and dying soldiers.

His ministerial labors included terms as presiding elder on the Burlington and Ottumwa Districts. In 1896 he was a member of the General Conference, which met in Cleveland, Ohio, and worthily represented his Conference.
He has well been characterized as "a man of superior natural and acquired ability, and was in the true sense an orator. His preaching was Scriptural, sound, and convincing, and delivered with force and unction. His voice was clear and musical, his enunciation distinct, and his manner pleasing; and he was sought for, for addresses upon public occasions, and he never failed to hold an audience. He had an exceedingly retentive memory, and his
social qualities were marked." He was well known outside of his own denomination, and took a lively interest in all living questions.

His death was very sudden, falling in an office where he had been in conversation with some of his friends; but in this he had his long-expressed desire fulfilled, that he might be spared protracted and severe suffering.
His remains were laid to rest in the Ottumwa Cemetery

am a descendent of James Teter and Barbary Reger. I'm trying to find out if anyone knows if there are Wills for either James or Barbara Reger Teter Zinn. I would like to obtain copies of them. James does not have a Will in Randolph Co. or Lewis. I was going to try Barbour next but hoping someone may know before I sent it out. I'm also looking for proof that James was son of Jacob Teter and Elizabeth Holder, who was son of George Teter and Mary Anna Margaret Henckle. Any help would be much appreciated. Thank you!

Garnett Russell Griffith birth 1908

I am attempting to verify my father's birthplace. I have the date correct as 25 April 1908. My memory is fading and I am not sure if he said Elkins or not. Census records show him and my grandfather in Tazewell County Virginia around 1920 eventually settling in Williamson WV. My grandfather Robert Leonard Griffith was married to Maud or Maude Mitchell. I have been unable to find any good information about her either. As my father was the oldest of the 7 children and if he was born in Elkins, I suspect Maud Mitchell may have roots in that area as well.

If anyone has information that may related to them and would share it I would appreciate it.
