Edna Earle Young --- what is her birthday?

The obituary for Edna found in the Raleigh Register of April 4, 1960 shows her birthday as being Jan. 21, 1885 but the 1900 census has her age as 23 born in June 1877.

At the time of the 1900 census Edna had 4 children:
Gracie age 8 (May 1892)
William C. age 6 (Feb 1894)
Ernest C. age 4 (Aug 1895)
Bessie age 1 (Mar 1899)

As you can see the 1885 date would be hard to believe but is it 1875 or 1877?

Mrs. Edna Dickens

Funeral services for Mrs. Edna Earle Young Dickens, 85, Bolt will be conducted at 2 p.m. Wednesday in the Coal Marsh Baptist Church, Glen Daniel, with the Rev. Denny Dinsmore in charge. Burial will be in the Worley Cemetery, Bolt.

Mrs. Dickens, grandmother of "Little Jimmie" Dickens, of radio fame, died at the home of a daughter, Mrs. Perry Snuffer, at 12:40 a.m. today after a long illness.

She was a member of the Bolt Independent Baptist Church, and a lifelong resident of Raleigh County.

Born Jan. 21, 1885, at Hinton, she was a daughter of the late Joseph and Amanda Simmons Young.

Also surviving are four sons, Finley, Baton Rouge, La.; Ernest, Montcoal;Quince and Prince, both of Bolt; three other daughters, Mrs. Stollie Acord and Mrs. Minnie Acord, both of Bolt, and Mrs. Bessie Hawley; one brother,Charley Young, Saxon; 40 other grandchildren; 67 great-grandchildren and two great-great grandchildren.

Pallbearers will be Elmer Hawley, Gerald Hawley, Jess Humphrey, Ronnie Clay and Bud Rollins.

The body will be taken from the Rose and Quesenberry Funeral Home to the church one hour before the services.

Harold Lafayette Ramey Obit

Mr. Harold Lafayette Ramey age 89, of Lowgap passed away Sunday, August 31, 2008 at Elkin Health Care.

Mr. Ramey was born on June 11, 1919 in Beckley, W VA to the late William Jasper and Audie Varco Frost Ramey.

He served in World War II and was a retired farmer.

Mr. Ramey is survived by his wife, Myrtle Ruth Sprinkle Ramey of the home; a daughter and son-in-law, Mary and Jeff Stone of Wagram, NC; a son and daughter-in-law, William Harold “Butch” Ramey of Winston Salem; grandchildren, Casey Ramey of Winston Salem, Jeremiah Stone and wife Myra of Wagram, NC, Jake Stone of Greensboro, Jenny Stone of Wagram, NC; one great grandchild, Joscelin Souranonh of Wagram; a brother and sister-in-law, Robert and Lois Ramey of Galax, VA.

In addition to his parents, Mr. Ramey was preceded in death by a sister, Wilma Ramey Craven and a brother, William Coy “Bill” Ramey.

Funeral services will be conducted Tuesday, September 2, 2008 at 1:00 PM at Roaring Gap Baptist Church by Rev. Joe Atkins with burial to follow in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends Monday, September 1, 2008 from 7:00 until 9:00 PM at Roaring Gap Baptist Church. Flowers will be accepted or memorials may be made to Roaring Gap Baptist Church, c/o Mike Casstevens, 722 Casstevens Rd, Mt. Airy, NC 27030. Moody Funeral Home in Mt. Amigo coal mine

I am trying to find any information on the Amigo coal co.
Mine- Amigo, Address- Amigo WV in Raleigh county.
I just recieved a copy of my GGreat Grand father,s (Alva W. Whitt) Inspecror,s fatal accident report from May-23-1939.
It also has Joseph A. Wood, Jr coal co. on a affidavid.
I am in the state of Washington and being new to this I can't even find Amigo. Doe's this town still exist? Both him and his wife were members of the amigo baptish church.and again I don,t know where that is.
If anyone can help me out at all thet would be great.

Mary Marie Quesenberry, 71, of Beckley, died Thursday, May 25, 2000, in a local hospital following a long illness.
Born Oct. 6, 1928, in Mabscott, she was the daughter of the late Martha Clark Hager.
Mrs. Quesenberry attended Calloway Heights Missionary Baptist Church and lived in Beckley all her life.
She was preceded in death by a brother, Andrew Payne; and a sister, Marilyn Campbell Sweeney.
Survivors include her husband of 52 years, Ivan Quesenberry; a son, Ivan Jr. and his wife, Zoretta, of Beckley; a daughter, Linda Quesenberry of Beckley; three grandsons, Daniel Quesenberry and Pat-rick Plumley, both of Beckley, and Matthew Quesenberry stationed with the U.S. Army in Korea; and a sister, Pauline Tiffany of Oregon.
Services will be 1 p.m. Sunday at Rose and Quesenberry Peace Chapel, Beckley, with Pastor Bill Parker officiating. Burial will follow at Sunset Memorial Park, Beckley.
Friends may call one hour before services Sunday at the funeral home.
Family members will serve as pallbearers.

I Need help in Confirming my mother and father came from Affinity, WVa before they got married in 1933. Mother-Martha Louise Newman and Father-Snookum Perdue Briggs. I have their Marriage certificate.

My parents live most of there lives in and around Beckley after they were married. Before marriage they came from Affinity. I am trying to find more about them-I have the USA Census on them from Ancestry.com. My father and grandfather both worked in mines around Beckley but I cannot find any records to confirm this either.

I have the 1920-1930 census on both my father and grandfather and death certificates on both. I also have the WW I Draft record on my grandfather and driver's license and marriage certificate for my father and mother. I cannot find any marriage license for my grandfather in WVa. He was born in North Carolina and I cannot find any info from NC.

Another area I am struggling with is that I was told my Grandfather's (Marion Boyd Briggs) last name was originally Waycaster and he changed it to Briggs from his mother's maiden name. From this assumption, they say he has three half-brothers from the Waycaster side. At his funeral , some one listed on the Family record page-1/2 Bros. Bill, Willard and Zack Waycaster and Relatives attending page listed W.M. Waycaster having signed in. I have traced these Waycaster family and cannot find any connection between Waycaster and Briggs families.

How and where can I confirm these areas ?

WALTERBORO, S.C. - Albert Ernest Cole Jr., 73, of 4319 Jefferies Blvd., entered into eternal rest Friday, June 25, 1999, at Colleton Medical Center, Walterboro.

Born Jan. 25, 1926, in Mead, he was the son of the late Albert Ernest Cole Sr. and Sylvia Ann Shrewsbury Cole.

Mr. Cole retired after 18 years of coal mining, and after 24 years of dedicated service he retired from the U.S. Navy in February 1967 and then entered the Naval Fleet Reserve until he retired in November 1974. While in service he served our country during World War II and the Korean Conflict.

He was a mason and member of Pine Grove Baptist Church No. 1.

He was preceded in death by a brother, Gene Cole.

Survivors include his wife of 49 years, Bonnie June Gills Cole; two sons, John Albert Cole and Phillip Frazier Cole, both of Walterboro; four daughters, Teresa C. Bell of Walterboro, Tonia C. Parks of Lester, Chloe C. Mullens of Coal City and Linda C. Eley of Myrtle Beach, S.C.; seven brothers, Arlie Cole of Tampa, Fla., Richard Cole of St. Louis, Joel Cole, Dale Cole and Carlos Cole, all of Odd, Tommy Cole of Indianapolis and John Cole of Beckley; two sisters, Lorene C. Ms. Hodges was born February 20, 1914, in Raleigh County, WV, the daughter of the late Edgar and Alice Garretson.

Ms. Hodges was a homemaker and of the Baptist faith.

Surviving are her daughter, Carol Hodges Simmons of Mount Airy; three grandchildren, Kimberly Simmons of Mount Airy, David Simmons and his wife, Tracy, of Dobson, and Chris Simmons of Mount Airy; and nine great-grandchildren, Peyton Simmons, Devin Simmons, Ryan Simmons, and Sheldon Simmons, all of Dobson, and Trevor Hamilton, Torrance Hamilton, Summer Hamilton, Sam Simmons, and her precious great-granddaughter Fallon Cook, all of Mount Airy.

A private graveside service will be held Monday, June 2, 2008, at 11:00 AM at Skyline Memory Gardens, with the service conducted by the Rev. Richard Loman. The Hodges family will receive friends Sunday from 7:00 until 9:00 PM at Moody Funeral Home in Mount Airy, NC. Still looking for the cemetery where James Augustus Mitchem is buried. The information I have about his death comes from one of the Bailey family researchers.He gives James death to be April 10,1915 in Raleigh Co. WV.. I have not been able to find a cemetery listing for him on line. I have been able to find cemeteries where some of his children are buried.

I know he lived in Raliegh, Wyoming Counties and Mcdowell Co. He married his third wife Sarah Jane Bailey Jan. 31 1881 in McDowell County WV.

Any help or suggestions would be greatly appreciated. I am planning a trip home soon, and would like to visit his grave. Thank you one and all for the help you have given me in my on going search for my Mitchem roots.

I have several old photos (some from the early 1900s) belonging either either Verna Vest Bennett (1908-80) or Golda Vest Smith (1911-91), daughters of Leonard Haliburton Vest and his wife Emma Stella Gadd. The Vest family lived on White Oak Mountain, Raleigh County, West Virginia. The sisters, both teachers, married men from Abraham, Richmond District, Raleigh County. Verna was the wife of Fred Bennett and Golda the wife of Earl George Smith.

I have no information on some photos. Others were labeled by Mrs. Smith but I'm not sure who the people are or how they fit into my family tree.

One is labeled: Nola Wood's baby. Another is a girl from the community of Raleigh.

Mrs. Wilburn was born in Raleigh County, WV, October 6, 1932 to Charles and Dora Smith Heath.

She was a loving mother, grandmother, great grandmother and an active member of Northside Baptist Church.

Airy; two sons and a daughter-in-law, David Wilburn and Willie Wilburn, Jr. and wife Donna all of Mt. Henry M. AKERS was born on 11 Oct 1901 in Tazewell Co., VA and died in Raleigh Co., WV. He married Edna Unknown and had three children, Howard, Claude and Arvilla. Henry's parents were James Fielding Akers and Electra Ann Moore Akers.
According to family, Henry was found dead from a gun shot in his yard by two of his children. It is not clear if it was a suicide or someone else killed him.
I am hope that someone has information, an obituary or newspaper article on Henry's death. His death would have happened after 1938.
Any help would be appreciated.

I have just had another skeleton from the family closet fall out and hit me in the head.

In researching my husbands grandmother I found on the 1920 census her living in the home of her GG-Grandfather Henry Richmond age 74. Also in the home are:
James A Richmond, son 47
Julia A Richmond, daughter 51
Nellie Richmond, grandaughter 22 (dau of Julia A)
Cecil Richmond, grandson 9 (unsure of who parents are)
Merion Richmond, great grandaughter 5
Hazel R Richmond, great grandaughter 1 (my hubby's grandmother)

While trying to find out who the other children belonged to I found out that Merion was Hazels sister. It is unclear if her parents ever married, but according to a sister born later, Merion's father came and took her to live with him or sent her to school around 1926 when Nellie died giving birth to twin girls. (They are a whole other story that I will dive into later.) Merion's father's last name was Lilly. I don't know his first name. Nellie's other 5 daughters were fathered by George Arthur, son of Charles Franklin Arthur and Amanda Tredway. George and Nellie never married (George was already married to Inez Clay Palmer).

Can anyone help me in tracking down info on Merion? She has 2 surving sisters that don't remember much since they were under 10 when all this happened.

It looks like her Mother was possibly a Toothman, he Father possibly a Richmond, and she was raised by the Goodman or Goodson families. The spelling of Krause also varies. I know Augustus and Kate were German
speaking immigrants probably "Black Deutsch". Their daughter was Emma

1. Daniels School, class photos, Grades 5 and 6, 1946-47. The teacher, top row, left, is Bess Kate Snyder. Billy Lee Smith (born March 8, 1936, to Earl George Smith and his wife Golda Vest) is the last one on that row.

2. Photo labeled “Hoye School/Last school term/1927-28/Last teacher Verna Vest.” This is a 1970s Polaroid photo of the boarded-up school. Hoye was probably in Raleigh County. Verna Veatrice Vest (July 6, 1908/Jan. 27, 1980) was a daughter of Leonard Haliburton Vest and his wife Emma Stella Gadd. Verna married Fred Bennett (Feb. 9, 1910/?) of Abraham, W.Va., on Nov. 26, 1931. Most of Mrs. Bennett's career was spent teaching in Richmond District, Raleigh County.

Born April 27, 1940, in Freeburn, Ky., she was the daughter of the late Robert Grayson and Nora Pearl Ward.

Sue loved spending time with her grandchildren, arranging flowers and gardening.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by two brothers, Lawthie and Walter, and two sisters, Gartha and Juanita.

Those left to cherish her memory include her loving husband of 48 years, Walter Baugh; daughter Monica Jackson of Pineville, W.Va.; son Mike Baugh of Pilot Mountain; daughter Tshonia Pennington and husband Michael of Mount Airy; son Shane Baugh and wife Sherri of Ft. Benning, Ga.; grandchildren Tyler Pennington, Courtney Jackson, Austin Pennington, Maddison Pennington, Ian Baugh and Ethan Baugh; and brothers and sisters Frank of Pineville, Roger “Porky” of Pineville, Marie of Beckley, Bill of Vinton, Ohio, Robert “Bob” of Beckley, Pauline of Pineville and Lula Nunn of Delaware.

It appears that James C. married twice. 1900 census, Town, Raleigh, WV shows him married to Charlie for 4 years, no children, and living with his parents. 1910 census shows married 3 years to Marsha (second marriage for both) with 1 child - 1 living; however the child is not shown in the household. It appears this was Marsha's child from her previous marriage. 1920 census, Mabscott, Raleigh, WV shows Carnie C. Curtis, male, age 18 living with James C. and Marsha Curtis. 1930 census, Beckley, Raleigh, WV shows James C. as widowed and living in household of Carna C. Curtis, age 28, married at age 25 to Irene D.

Where can Carna/Carnie C. be located in the 1910 census? Does anyone have any info re Marsha's first husband and possibly Carna/Carnie C.'s father? Did James C. have any children from either marriage?

Mounce Noel

Looking for info on Mounce Noel (1889-1971) and his brother Yance (1887-Bef 1920?). They came from Cabell County to Raleigh before 1910. Probably worked in coal mines. Parents were Arthur D. Noel (1853-1890) and Elizabeth French (Swann) Noel Elkins (1863-1938). Thanks.
