Recently Lena's family asked me to research Lena's origins. Are you still looking? Do you have information to share? Here is what the family had to tell me:
Lena Belle Toothman, born around 1891, was raised by the Goodson family of Richmond District, Raleigh County, W.Va. Who were Lena's parents? Why did she live with the Goodsons? Any information will be appreciated.
It is believed that her mother, who wasn’t married, died in childbirth.
Lena married George Washington Plumley and the couple had 11 children.
Following is information from the 1900 census and a passage from a local history book.
John W Goodson, 52, Richmond, Raleigh, West Virginia.
Estimated Birth Year: abt 1848. Birthplace: Virginia.
Spouse's Name: Mary C.
Race: White.
Household Members:
John W Goodson 52
Mary C Goodson 52
Oliver G Goodson 16 (son)
Lena B. Toothman 9 (servant)
“Mrs. Nanny Goodson was born at Beaver on March 12, 1894 and became the wife of Ollie Goodson. They had three children: Jessie Raymond, John Elvin and Beulah. Goodson arrived in the community carrying two chairs he had made with maple posts, hickory rungs and seats of split white oak. He approached Lawrence Lilly about selling the chairs and soon Lilly had more orders than Goodson could fill. Eventually these hand crafted chairs sold for the unheard-of price of $15.00 for six.” From “A History of Shady Spring District,” Compiled and Published by Shady Spring District Woman’s Club, 1979, Central Printing, Beckley, W.Va. Her family said Lena may have had a brother, Bob.
