In reference to the name of Frederick Harsh's wife, Janice Cale Sisler, Preston County, WV historian told me her name was Caroline. The info I have on her is that she was born 11 Apr 1773 in Washington Co, Md and died after 1801. No information on where she died. This has not been verified but might be used as a lead. Their daughter, Sarah, is my line. Sarah was born about 1786 in Preston Co, WV and died unknown. She married Jacob Wotring son of John Abraham Wotring (Rev Patriot) and Mary Margaretha Troxell Wotring. The info on Sarah and Jacob has been DAR accepted in my Wotring application.

In Roy Lockhart's book, the name of the father is shown as a horizontal line (______). I used the "?" in place of the line. I don't have any idea whether the name wasn't listed in the original document, or was just illegible. The book doesn't specify, although Lockhart did say in the introduction to the book "Due to the general illegibility of the records, some errors in interpretation may have been made."

He also said "The records had been water damaged and mold or mildew obliterated information in some areas." It is quite possible this was the case in this instance.

The records were transcribed from microfilm and verified from the original records at the Library of Virginia. Lockhart lists the microfilm as "J.R. 3350, West Virginia Vital Statistics, Pleasants to Preston, Reel 7, filmed by the LDS Church in 1954."
Just out of curiosity, when you say that his parents are listed as "? & Catherine Wolf," what does that mean? Is there a question mark in the book? Is the name simply missing? Is the name just illegible?

If there is really a question mark, that would mean that the person making the entry did not know the name of his father. If it was entered contemporaneous to the wedding, that would probably mean that Great Great Grandfather William did not know who his father was. Is there any indication regarding that?

Is there a copy of this page available anywhere? Has anyone seen it?

Thanks and happy hunting.

My 3rd great grandmother is Huldah Wolfe, d/o George and Elizabeth Teets Wolfe.

I'm curious about the book "Preston County WV (then VA) Records 1853 - 1860" by Roy Lockhart. Unfortunately it is not and ebook. I'd enjoy looking through for info on all of my Preston County ancestors.

I have some information that might help. According to the book "Preston County WV (then VA) Records 1853 - 1860" by Roy Lockhart, William Wolf married Lucinda Sidwell 8 Dec 1853. His parents are listed as ? & Catherine Wolf. Hers are listed as Henry & Nancy Sidwell. Maiden names not listed for the mothers. Williams occupation was listed as blacksmith. The person performing the ceremony was Harburt Cool. I used the spelling "Wolf", since that is the way it was spelled in those records, although I realize "Wolfe" was also used.

The book was transcribed from microfilm records of the original registers at the Library of Virginia.

Death certificates show William Wolf died March 30, 1917 in Tucker Co., WV, age 85. Lucinda died Nov 3, 1925, also in Tucker, and a birth date of June 28, 1832.

Incidentally, don't confuse this William with William Wolfe, born about the same time, who also lived in Preston County. The other William married Catharine Barb.

Hope this helps.

Jim Preston

I am somewhat new to this, but am searching for the same information. Did you ever have any luck? A few people seem to think he is the son of Samuel Wolfe and Sarah Jane Teets. The only evidence of that seems to be the 1850 census data that you cite.

On a different line, most seem to agree that William Wolfe's wife Lucinda's maiden name was "Sidwell." I have not found anything that actually says that was her maiden name. I do note that Peter Wolf's wife was Louisa and is usually considered a Sidwell and that Louisa Sidwell had a sister Lucinda, but I would like something more certain.

Thanks.

My brother and I own the property that the School House is located on. It was our Mother who was the very fine cook.
She cooked Dinner for Della, Olive, Lulu and I think there was a member of Della's family along, but anyway I drove them in my jeep up the "old" road to Terra Alta..the same road Della used to walk down and up to come to the Sisler School. I would love to hear from you!!! I have some of Della's paintings!!! Olive and Lulu used to come to pick Blackberries with Mother and I.
Yes I was there in the 1970s and had dinner at the Sisler house. My grandmother was friends with her. I forget her first name. I was in elementary school. I remember she cooked a lot of food. It was like a feast. My grandmother grew up in Terra Alta. her father was AR Fike of the Fike Watson Funeral Home on Main Street. I used to spend many 4th of Julys there staying at my Great Aunt Lu Watson's house on the lake. Sometimes I would spend the night at the apartment upstairs of the old funeral home. That was my Great Aunt Olive's apartment. My Great Aunt Violet we called her Toots had a summer cottage on the lake. Great memories. I grew up in College Park Maryland and now live in the Baltimore area. I would be related to these family names Fike, Martin and Friend.

There were three one room schools on Salt Lick. The Sisler school, the Beatty school and the Pine Grove school. Are any of the students in the photo identified? Would it be possible to get copies of the painting and the photo of her and her students for the Preston County Historical Society? I attended the Pine Grove school in the 1940's.

Courtesy lookup - not my family.

I found a William G. MORGAN, born 1808, in 1850 Marion Co., VA with wife Ann, born about 1812, Ireland, with seven children, born 1837-1848. The name was so exact and the two counties, Marion & Monogalia, share a border. It makes me think it's the same William G. as yours, who was married 6 Feb 1832 to Jemima "Gemimy" CHIPPS.

I found a Virginia (now WV) marriage that may explain:

10 March 1836, Monogalia County, William G. MORGAN married Anna LOWE

Tracing this bride forward through the censuses, Ann/Anna LOWE was born February 1810, Ireland, immigrated in 1820 to the US, married William G. MORGAN in 1836, Monogalia Co., and moved by 1870 to Kokomo, Howard County, Indiana. Ann MORGAN, widow, died 26 Oct 1902, age 91, and she was buried, with most of her children, in Crown Point Cemetery, Kokomo.

That means poor Jemima Chipps MORGAN was married barely four years. I believe she perished in her early twenties between 1832-1836, probably Monogalia County, VA. There are no death records, darn it, recorded until 1853, so we cannot check them, and Find A Grave did not list William or Jemima in it's burial index.

Hope this helps a little,
hazellady

Looking for a Eliza Moore who married Samuel Specht, we think she may have died in West Virginia, They were married in Garrett Co Maryland on July 7, 1884 . They had on son togeather that we know of his name was Jacob E. Specht we think he was born in about 1887 and he died in 1903 in Pa. In his obit it said he had several step sister and step brothers, that were living in West virginia He died at the age of 16 years old and at the time of his death he was living with the synder family in Pa. We think his mother died before 1903 because it never had who she was , just his father's name Samuel Specht.
Thank you,
Judy Wilson
