Leonard Day Descendant Needed for DNA Test

Hi, I am a descendant of Samuel Day born 1757. Samuel Day is a possible descendant of Leonard Day. In order to prove/disapprove this, we need a male DAY descendant of Leonard Day to have a DNA test done. This will be paid for by us (Samuel Day researchers). This would be very helpful in finding our Samuel Day's parentage. I Thank You, Angie Erickson “Please Reply naerickson@gondtc.com”

Re: David Fulk family (Foulke, Folke) - possible association to Ludwig Fulk aka Falck

I don't have much more on Ludwig Falck.

The full citations for the two Ludwig Falck Church records are:

St. Michaelis and Zion Records (Pennsylvania German Church Records, Vol. I, pg. 599)

Falk, Johann Ludewig,
Schulerin, Anna Christina; m. December 24 [1750]
Witness: Daniel Eder, Johannes Berg, Friedrich Maut [sic - Maus], Jurg Kurtz

St. Michaelis and Zion Records (Pennsylvania German Church Records, Vol. I, pg. 538)

Ronau, Susannah Margretha, dr. Peter Ronau and w. Cathrina Margretha (newcomers)
b. Aug. 30; bap. Sept 23 [1752]
sp. Ludwig Falck, Susanna Margretha Mausin [Susanna Margretha was the wife of Frederick]

There are several additional records for the family of Frederick Maus (he remained in Philadelphia).

Annette K. Burgert indicates that Samuel Maus (of unknown relationship to Frederick) was married to an Elizabeth Schuler. Both Maus men (as well as George Mouse who was killed at Seybert's fort) had roots in Hornback as well as being mentioned in the records of St. Michaelis and Zion Lutheran Church in PA.

A working hypothesis for Ludwig Falck is:

Arrived in Philadelphia on the Sally in Oct. 1750. (This may have been a vessel in which illness wiped out a large number of passengers so keep open the possibility that Ludwig may have lost a wife on the trip.

Ludewig Falk married Anna Christina Schuler 24 Dec 1750 in Philadelphia. (Witnesses include Friedrich Maus who was the brother of George Mouse who would be killed in April 1758).

Lodwowick Folk appears on a list in Hening's Statutes for re-imbursement for supplies to the militia during the French and Indian war.

Loudwig Folk appears on a list in Hening's Statutes for re-imbursement for what seems to have been militia duty under Capt. Abraham Smith (whose bailiwick included the South Branch). The names nearest him were associated with the Upper Tract area.

It's likely Falck arrived on the South Branch between 1753 and 1757 - and, of course, he was killed at the end of April, 1758. It's possible he's mentioned in some of the probate material which Eric Hedrick has recently digitized but I haven't looked for him specifically.

(I inadvertently typed 1758 - rather than 1750 - for the arrival of the Sally and have corrected in this posting.)

Thank you for your information! I greatly appreciate it as it does indeed give me somewhere else to look.
I have been trying for years to connect Ludwig Falck to Mathew Folk as some descendants of Mathew Fulk believe them to be brothers. I have 2 possible emigrations that could be Mathew but no proof. I also wondered if Mathew may have accompanied Ludwig and being below 16 years was not listed. There is mention of Mathew Fulk in Manheim, Pa? and again at Massanutten with Jacob Stover in 1732? But there is nothing to suggest with certainty that Mathew and his supposed Senedo wife are indeed the parents of John Fulk of Brock's Gap and his prolific lineage.
A Mr. Mallow allowed my husband and I to view the historical marker in his soybean field several years ago when I attempted to follow a lead based on info I unraveled from another Fulk descendant. As I mentioned, some of John Fulk's older sons passed on the tradition of Ludwig being a brother to JOhn's father, supposedly Mathew.
I have read many accounts of the massacres in Pendleton, I love the little town of Franklin, by the way - we saw the cutest parade while there, maybe it was July 4th. I also have the inventory from Ludwig's will but have never found a possible name for his wife and no mention of children.
With the name being so uncommon, until the birth of JOhn's 11 children and their multiple offspring, I think it quite likely there is a relationship between these Fulks from the 1700's but would sure like to be able to prove it.
If you have further information on any of these Fulk/Falck/Folk/Foulke/Folke/Fackh/Fokt I would really appreciate hearing it.
I am going to see if I can contact the churches you mentioned in Philadelphia.
Thank you so much again!
s

There was a Ludwig Fulk (by any several spellings) who was killed in the massacre at the fort at Upper Tract as was his wife in what is now Pendleton Co. (then Augusta Co.) in 1758.

It's possible - maybe likely - that he was aka Ludwig Falck who arrived on the Ship Sally on 17 Oct 1750. He is probably the same Johann Ludewig Falk who was married later that year to Anna Christina Schuler in Philadelphia.

Frederick Maus (mis-transcribed in the recording in Pennsylvania German Church Records as Maut)was a witness to his marriage. The same Frederick Maus was the brother of George Maus (aka Mouse) was also the victim of a massacre at Seybert's fort the day following the massacre at Upper Tract. (There is additional evidence of a familial relationship between the Maus, Schuler, and Falck families in the records of St. Michaelis and Zion Lutheran Church of Philadelphia).

I don't postulate a relationship between David and Ludwig but mention it only as a possible lead.

Seek info on David Fulk born abt 1748? Would like to know parents? Possibly Mathew Fulk and Senedo (native American).
Brothers? Possibly John born abt 1739 and Adam born abt. 1740-?
David Fulk was in Franklin, Va in 1818 when he applied for pension based on his service in the revolution from 1775 -1778-1779. He likely died there as he claimed to be age 70 at the time.
My information comes from DAR records and from Footnote.
David said he had 3 children: 2 daughters and a son with 1 of them living in KY and 2 of them living in Western PA. However, they may have already been dead by this time. I have found no names for children or wife.
David was still living in Pendleton Co., Va in Sept. 1820.
Can anyone help to figure out whether David Fulk was a sibling to JOhn Fulk of VA? And does he have living descendants??????????????
Thank you!
s

I am seeking information on the Isaac Smith family in Pendleton County. Isaac was the son of Nathan and Mahulda Smith. He was born 1868. I want to know when he died. The only Isaac Smith I can find, died 7 Nov 1918. This is not the Isaac Smith I am looking for.

The Isaac Smith I am searching for was married to Minnie Landis, daughter of Daniel Landis and America Dolly. I found them in the 1940 census records.

I would also like to find information on his children. Such as who and when they married. I found grandchildren in the 1940 census records.

His children: Russell b. 11 Jul 1902; Sola F. b 1905; Vallie b. 4 Oct 1907; Marie b. 14 Feb 1910; Robert b abt 1913; Ralph b abt 1915; Olive b. 25 Mar 1918; Nida b abt 1921

I only found Marie in the 1910 census. But I can't find when she died.

I found Sola F. in the Pendleton County birth records. No where else.

I feel I have hit a brick wall. I will appreciate any help I can get.

Thank you.
Re: Henry Stone aka Henrich Stein of the South Branch immigrated in 1751 not 1748

This thread captured my attention because the history of Henrich Stein (aka Henry Stone) seems to closely match the story passed down in one branch of our family about the arrival of our Stone/Stein ancestor in what was to become the United States. I suspect Henrich Stein (aka Henry Stone) had a son named Henry Stone who in turn had a son named Henry Stone (my 4th great grandfather, believed to have been born in 1762 in Frederick County, Maryland).

Although I haven't located any documents yet supporting a link from my Henry Stone to Henrich Stein (aka Henry Stone), I have taken a Y-DNA 37 marker test through Family Tree DNA, and an autosomal DNA test through Ancestry. The Y-DNA test has not yet produced any matches, even at only the twelve marker level. The autosomal test has produced many matches across all my family lines, but there is only one that I can say is possibly a link to the Henry Stone who married Susannah Zorn. Unfortunately, without a chromosome comparison tool being available here at Ancestry yet, I can only say 'possibly' on this match, without more matches being found.

If anyone come across this thread and has more information on Henrich Stein (aka Henry Stone) and/or his descendants, I would appreciate you adding it to this thread and/or sending me an email. I would also be especially interested in hearing from any male direct line descendants who have taken, or would be willing to take (at my expense), a DNA test to see if a match can be made.

Thank you,

Dan Stone
stonefamilytree'avoid spam'mac.com (replace 'avoid spam' with @)

I do not have much on this family except the census records of 1910 & 1920 of WV Tucker Co. Davis which has the following listing: King, Sylvester E. - 29; Florence-27; Edgar-6; Clavis -5; Stellman-3. 1920 census has Sylvester-38; Florence-36;Edgar-16; Clavis-14; Stellman-13; Mabel-7; Robert 9/12.
Then the 1930 census has Sylvester-E.-49; Florence-46; Stellman-23; Robert-11. Birth Records has Edgar William b.
07 Dec 1903; Klahres Olen born 03 May 1905; Stelman Theodore born 25 Dec 1906; Mabel Elizabeth born 22 Jan 1912. The spelling of Clavis or Klahres may be wrong also Stellman is spelled different.
The death record for Sylvester E. (Elkins) has his DOB as
Jan. 29. 1881 and DOD as May 16, 1931;  Occupation as a painter & decorator; Cause of death as acute heart attack;
Father-Thomas E. King and Mother as Martha A ?Vanorsdale.
Sylvester was buried at Davis, Davis Dist, South west of Davis on Rt. 29. Also in the Tucker cemetery Record book, there is a Florence R. listed born 05 Oct 1882 but no date of death. I believe she should be listed as Eva Florence.
Eva Florence was the daughter of Sylvester & Elizabeth Vandevender Raines.
I am looking for my GGGrandmother, Cora M Puffenbarger who married Amos Simmons. One family tree stated her parents as Gerome Puffenbarger and Mary Waybright Helmick (Helmark), sister to Carrie, but I cannot find proof. She was born Mar 1876(7)and married Amos at age 19. On the marr. cert. no parents are listed. He was quite a bit older (35 I believe) and she already had my Ggrandmother Betty Jane 2 years prior. Do you have any info with her name listed as a sister to Carrie?

There is an obituary (actually more of a death notice) for Levi Simmons in the book Upshur County, West Virginia Obituaries and News Items 1872-1900, Vol. I by Lemoyne Wolfe and Karon King - pg. 69. It is cited as from the Buckhannon Delta (newspaper) and dated Thurs. Feb. 8, 1900 -unfortunately, his parents' names are not given (nor those of his 72 year old wife or the 8 children mentioned) but the notice indicates that Levi was born in Pendleton County on Feb. 16, 1816. (Wolfe and King cite Louisa as his wife per the 1880 census of Upshur Co.)

(A portion of what would later become Highland County was still part of Pendleton Co. in 1816).

I’m not related to any member of this family.

This is your problem -

Facts you should know about the early census records –

All census records [1790 – 1840] prior to the 1850 census ONLY listed the head of household; whether male or female.

NO specific age was stated for any family member
NO place of birth was stated – city, state, or country
NO city, town, or village is stated – only the county; however some census takers listed the township
NO street address was stated
NO marital status was stated – single, married, widowed, or divorced
NO family relationship was stated – brother, sister, cousin, son, daughter, wife, inlaw, etc…
NO occupation was stated
NO parental birthplaces are stated
NO race was stated [but assume “white”]

1850, 1860 & 1870 census records do not show family relationships, marital status or parental birthplaces.

Step children are not enumerated as “step” children
Adopted children are not enumerated as “adopted”
Grand children are not enumerated as “grand children”
Orphaned children were not enumerated as "orphan"

1850 is the 1st census that shows all family members

1880 is the 1st census that shows parental birthplaces and family relationships +++

NOTE -
WVA was not a state at the time of Levi's birth.
So, he was probably born in VA.

1850 -
Name: Levi Simmons
Age: 26
Birth Year: abt 1824
Birthplace: Pendleton
Home in 1850: District 25, Highland, Virginia
Gender: Male

Levi Simmons 26, VA - blacksmith
Polly Simmons 30, Pendleton, VA
Mavina Simmons 5, Pendleton, VA
Wm L Simmons 3, Pendleton, VA

cem. record -
Levi Simmons
Birth: Feb. 16, 1816 Pendleton County, West Virginia
Death: Feb. 3, 1900 Alton Upshur County, West Virginia

Son of Jacob and Sarah Elizabeth (Wooten) Simmons.
I know there are many Simmons in Pendleton in the 1820s and 1830s. Need help finding Levi's parents. From what I see in the census there are at least 5 candidates who have males 5-9 in 1830.
Levi married Mary (Polly) Tye born 1818 also of Pendleton.
Sugestions appreciated.
In 1850 he was in Highland Co and then seemed to settle in Upshur Co. He married about 1844 based on the age of the oldest child in 1850.

You may have already seen a 1910 Census of the household of Jesse B. Kisamore, not that it is much help but listed is KISAMORE Jesse B. m2-42; Ellen-38 married 1,6 ch-5 living;
Ray-12 (son of wife); Jay-10(son of wife); Leona-7 (daughter of wife); Cary-15; Theodore-10; Sylvia-11/12.

In the 1920 census, under Jesse B. -- Jesse B.-52; Ellen-51;
Theodore-19; Sylvia-11; BELL, William R.-23 step/son; DAY Jay-20 s/s; DAY Oney-17 step daughter.

Jeff has already listed Ellen's children and father except for Oney/Ona Leona which is unknown to me but from the census, it would seem as if it is NOT Jesse B nor James K. Boggs. I'm not certain when the 6th child died. I've not been able to find a marriage record for Ellen Day but in Jesse B.'s death record , it has he was a widower & also in Ellen's death record that she was married with Jesse B. as informant.
Some of these Gregg/Grogg/Gragg lines trace back to a family in Delaware.

http://wc.rootsweb.ancestry.com/cgi-bin/igm.cgi?op=GET&d...

There is evidence that he is a son of Henry who was son of Thomas. They were in VA for quite awhile, but the names are also consistant with the family from Delaware via Ireland and Scotland.

I have a family photograph that is labeled on the back "Davis and Kiser family, four generations". I'm guessing that it was taken in the early 1920s, perhaps sooner, in West Virginia. I am hoping that someone might be able to indentify some of the family members present in the photograph. Your help is greatly appreciated!

David
Chino, CA

I am trying to find Edward Enoch Davis or possibly Enoch Edward Davis. He married Sarah P. Sizer before 1876. Family stories have said that he may have immigrated here from Wales or Ireland, but we believe that he was born in VA and perhaps his parents were the immigrants. We believe that he moved to Hinton, WV in about 1890, possibly drawn by the railroad boom. We haven't been able to find any census records for him.

Attached is the only picture we have of him.

Thank you for any information or clues!!
Re: Nicholas Heavner's signature - Henry Lawrence probate 1758

Nicholas Heavner died in 1769. He was not present at the massacre.

But, yes. There is evidence that his widow married Christian Lauer. One of Nicholas Heavner's daughters is called "Lauer's stepdaughter" on a baptismal recording in Stouchsburg, PA, June 23, 1773.

The Lauer, Heavner, Theiss, and Seybert families had a complicated and heavily intermarried relationship:

1)Nicholas Heavner's wife, Elizabeth Seybert, was the sister of Christian Lauer's previous wife Catharine Seybert. Elizabeth, widow of Nicholas Heavner, married second Christian Lauer.

2) Both Catharine and Elizabeth (the wives of Christian Lauer) were sisters of Jacob Seybert who was killed at the massacre

3) Christian Lauer's sister, Susanna Barbara, was married to Matthias Theiss (Dice) who was the father of Matthias (Jr) and George Dice who also moved to the South Branch basin.

Christian Lauer appears to have been a key figure in the early settlement of a part of the South Branch basin. As indicated above he was closely related to three of the early settler families and he appears to have been the contact man in Tulpehocken and Stouchsburg for other early South Basin settlers including my ancestor Michael Mallo.

There is evidence of loan repayment to Christian Lauer from several South Branch basin settlers in the early probate records.

Update - I failed to mention in the original post that Elizabeth Dice, the daughter of Matthias and Susanna Barbara Lauer Dice, was married to Jacob Seybert.

Can I join this conversation? I really scoured records in PA trying to separate out the different Christian Hoffmans at one point. I haven't worked this line for a few years, but the following might add to the pool of knowledge:

Source: Sharon Gothard, Easton Public Library

1779 Oct 16, in the Reformed Congregation in Lowhill, PA Johannes and Barbara Hartmann had their son Johannes baptized and Christian and Catharina Hoffman were the sponsors.

1781 Lowhill Twp, PA, Christian Hoffman was a taxable resident

1784 Sept 30 Elizabeth, daughter of Christian and Catherine Hoffman was born
Oct 10 she was baptized and sponsored by Benjamin and Elizabeth Kratzer

1785 March 17, Christian Hoffman had a land warranty in Lowhill Twp, PA

1786, Nov 11, Christian Hoffman, a yeoman of Mt. Bethel Township sold to his brother John Hoffman of Plainfield Twp the following: a white cow with black spots, 2 white yearling hogs, bed and bedding, chest, big iron pot, spinning wheel, table 1 1/2 tons of hay (unless Christian repaid John by next April 1) witnessed by Abram and Benjamin Depue.

I would appreciate being included in future conversation....

Pat Saletore
psaletore@sbcglobal.net

Hi Holly,
Hope you are still on the "genie" search. In your search did you happen to identify the father of Christian Hoofman/Hoffman/Huffman? He was born in 1755/1756 somewhere in North Hampton Co. PA from what I can gather. As you probably have discovered by now, he was a Rev. War soldier. Only problem is that there were 3 Christian Hoffmans born in PA all about 3 years apart all Rev. soldiers. Ours had a pension # of S38042.
John Huffman

George Dice probate d. ca 1795

George Dice probate died ca 1795

Eric Hedrick has another great find at the court house in Franklin. There was an envelope of receipts, settlement papers, and other original documents filed under Joseph "Erbach" which actually belonged to the George Dice estate. Eric included these with George's probate document photos. These photos are on Eric's 2nd CD of Pendleton County probate http://www.erichedrick.com/pendprobate/

The George Dice probate is particularly complicated and these documents shed some light on the interactions and problems between his estate, the estate of Matthias Dice, and the remarried Widow Dice. Among the papers are a receipt for the laying off of the Widow's dower and a receipt for payment of three years rent for the George Dice heirs' portion of Matthias Dice's land. Additonally there are various original signatures.

This is a great find for the Dice researchers. I hope someone works this file and posts the findings.
Other compilations of probate documents on the 2nd CD include William Clifton, George Coil, George Evick, William Gragg, Justus Henkle (Jr), John Morral, and Henry Seybert.

Probate of Matthias Miller d. ca 1793

Probate documents of Matthias Miller d. ca 7 Oct 1793

Eric Hedrick has released his newest CD which is a collection of the original documents from various probates of Pendleton Co. http://www.erichedrick.com/pendprobate/
One of the more exciting probate files is that of Matthias Miller of the North Fork who died before 7 Oct 1793. The file includes numerous miscellaneous receipts with original signatures of many North Fork and South Branch residents from the late 1790's into the early 1800's. Additionally there is mention of many others in the context of their occupations. The receipts include items as diverse as one for a watch repair, a stud fee, blacksmith fees, a deed for a loan, etc.

Perhaps, of great importance to the Miller researchers, is the backside of a deed which contains the signature, on 6 Nov 1794, of the immigrant Johannes Miller (who is said by family researchers to have been Matthias' father). Based on a citation from The Journals of Reverend Robert J. Miller (1811, 1813), the father of John Miller was a German who came to America when he was 26 years of age and who was then 86 years old. This is considered by Miller researchers to refer to Johannes Miller who had come to Pendleton County in the early 1790's from Pennsylvania. The citation gives a rough approximation of the date of immigration and with the signature from the back of the deed (a receipt for the money owed), a comparison can be favorably made to an immigrant on the ship Isaac which arrived 27 Sep 1749. Although the signatures are not absolutely identical, there are strong similarities and the immigrant signed his surname Miller (as did the Pendleton Co. Johannes Miller) and this was unusual for Germans who normally signed as Mueller or Muller with the umlaut over the u.

There may be additional help for the Millers in that the Isaac, 1749, also carried members of the Conrad family including Ulrich Conrad Sr. , an early settler in the South Branch basin. Ulrich is proven to have come from Switzerland and this could be a promising lead for Miller research. (John Miller is a very common name among Germans so a European connection is not easy work).

Other probates on Eric's new disc include John Botkin, John Boyd, Henry Buzzard, George Cowger, Thomas Douglass, Adam Loch (Lough), Eve Luts, Michael Probst (Propst), Lewis Waggoner (Ludwig Wagner), and Christian Wetsall. There are many original signatures which may be of help to others in sorting out various families where given names were repeated over several generations.

Yes, thank you. This is the line I am working. Cora L was my grandmother.

I am working my way back from this and trying to gather information. A tie to Pendleton County seems right, but it looks like I got on a thread for a different line. A lead to the Botkins Cemetery seems like a turn in the right direction though.

-Steve
