George MATTHEWS was born in 1764 (place unknown) and we believe he (or possibly his parents) emigrated directly from Glasgow Scotland with at least one brother
George married Althea Sellman Dec 24, 1792 in Ohio County VA (now VW) and they had seven children. The 1800 census reflects George being in "Army Lands" (Virginia Military District), but we have yet to determine the exact location, meaning of this term, or whether Althea and any children were with him. Sometime between 1800-1809 George moved to (or back to) Ohio County and bought a farm. It is unknown whether Althea died or they were divorced, but on Oct 26, 1809 George married Margaret Caldwell in Ohio County.
Their children included Alexander Caldwell Mathews (born February 06, 1818) plus seven other children all born sometime after 1809. George Matthews died Sep 30, 1844. Alexander Caldwell Mathews was born on his father's Ohio County farm Feb 6, 1818. He grew up there and married Mary Ann Wilson May 20, 1841. In 1846 he moved his family to a farm across the Ohio River in Jefferson County OH (on Salt Run Creek, Sect 10, Wells Township.) He lived there until his death June 20, 1898. Alexander and Mary Ann had fifteen children--Enoch Wilson Matthews was the 10th of 15 children, born Jan 30, 1856 on the Jefferson County farm. He married Karen Happuch West on Oct 21, 1882 in Brilliant (Jefferson County), OH and they had two children: Enoch Lawrence (b Nov 4, 1883) and James Alexander (b Aug 25, 1882). Enoch Wilson Matthews died Feb 9, 1898 in central Florida. James Alexander Matthews was born Aug 25, 1892 in Steubenville, OH. He married Bertha Adele Haines Oct 2, 1919 in Anderson, IN. They had one son, James West Matthews.
