I tried to answer the message about this wedding and got an invalid EMail address. These people are in my line and have extensive information on the Shepherd family. Lydia Shepher who married General Daniel Cruger was the daughter of Lydia Boggs. She was the widow of Moses Shepherd, all of Ohio County, West Virginia. Moses was the son of Colonel David Shepherd and Rachael Teague. I have much information on these families and am willing to share. Moses was a prominent and wealthy resident of Elm Grove and Lydia was known for her bravery in dealing with the frontier at that time.

Lydia was sister to my gggg grandmother Martha Boggs McFarland. When she died, she left money to Martha's four orphaned great-grandchildren in Indiana, who might not have had enough to live on otherwise. One of the four was my great-grandfather. There are court records accounting for their use of this money. I started researching where this came from, and discovered Lydia's story. I have a chance to come to Wheeling while on a business trip next week, and would love to drive by Lydia's home that I have been reading about. Can anyone give me directions to Monument Place?

Dear Dolly:

I llive in Arizona and have only been to Monument Place once. It is on the site of Fort Shepherd in the forks of Wheeling Creek, a handsone colonial mansion which is still standing in excellent preservation. This is from the book by
Samuel Smyth published in 1909. She was first the wife of Moses Shepherd After his death she married General Daniel Crugar. No children were born to either marriage.

The monument is in Elm Grove not Wheeling proper as I remember it from being there. It is right after you cross Shepherds Bridge. Anyone in towm can direct you there I would imagine

I'm related to the Shepherd family through my ggggrandmother Martha Shepherd McNabb, who was the sister to David Shepherd and was the aunt to Moses Shepherd.I unwittingly drove past Monument Place four years ago, and later was told it was owned and operated by a fraternal lodge. I never got to see it but intend to make an effort to see it when I'm next in that area.

I found the house, and took pictures of the outside, and have them on my computer. If you contact me directly at kinnun@chartermi.net, I can e-mail you copies if you like.
