1830 Census Western District, Nicholas County, VA lists two men with last name of Cagle (William and John). Wondering what happened to this family or could it POSSIBLY be misspelled "Eagle"? Jarroll O'Dell

Jarroll R. O'Dell, 92, of Point Pleasant, went home to be with the Lord Thursday, Aug. 14, 2008 at the Pleasant Valley Nursing and Rehabilitation Center.

He was a general office worker for Moss Coleing Coal Co.

He was born Jan. 11, 1916 in Nicholas County, a son to the late Okey and Ina R. Shawver O'Dell.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his son, Denver B. O'Dell; brother, Hugh C. O'Dell; and sister, Genevieve O'Dell.

Surviving are his loving and devoted wife of 72 years, Lana B. Backus O'Dell of Point Pleasant; one sister, Laura Miller of Point Pleasant; and a special niece, Pat Gray of Letart.

A private graveside service will be Monday, Aug. 18 at Forest Hills Cemetery with the Rev. Joe Hammack officiating. Burial will follow.

Y-DNA Testing for KOONTZ Surname

There is a group of descendants from the KOONTZ family that was in Nicholas County West Virginia, and Jackson County West Virginia who have done Y-DNA testing. I am wondering if there are any descendants of James KOONTZ married to Rebecca LONGENACRE/LONGENECKER who still live in the area that could do Y-DNA testing. If you go to www.familytreedna.com/public/Coon and check Group 11 in the results part, you can see that four people do match. This is a good means of excluding and including individuals. Samuel and Eleanor was married Dec. 25, 1828 in possibly Nicholas County, the part that is now Braxton. Adam Lough consented to his daughters marriage. What I need to find out is if on the application/certificate would it have who Samuel's parents were? Or his birth date or age?

I would be happy to help anyone who is interested in their Confederate ancestors, who served in what is now known as West Virginia.

I am the regimental historian of the 36th Va Infantry, which many men from Nicholas County either enlisted in or Lived in.

I am also the WV Division historian for the Sons of Confederate Veterans.

I am looking for any descendants of those men who served in the 36th Virginia Infantry, also any information regarding this regiment: photographs, letters, grave locations, etc....

John Westley(?) Morrison born Surrey North Carolina 1819 died 1891 ..married twice (1) Elizabeth Little Russell County, Va who died 1861 (2) Mary Ann Vanhook of Washington County Va. Following second marriage moved to what is now West Virginia. Had five children by Mary. John died in Nicholas County(?) and buried at Zoar Cemetery at Kessler's Cross Lanes. Would like to share info on John and his families. John was my great great grandfather...his daughter Mary E. , my great grandmother married Andrew Neal Campbell who died in 1908. Koontz Family in Nicholas Co., West Virginia

I am researching ALEXANDER KOONTZ who married SUSAN MARTIN 30th of October 1820 in Nicholas Co., VA(now WV). I am trying to find who his father was. I noticed on the 1820 census there was a HENRY KOONTZ, JACOB KOONTZ, and JAMES KOONTZ. Henry's census record looked like he could be the father of these two. Then on the 1830 census for Nicholas Co. JAMES KOONTZ AND ALEXANDER KOONTZ lived next to each other. I understand that JAMES KOONTZ stayed in Nicholas Co., VA(WV), JACOB KOONTZ moved into Fayette Co., VA(WV), and my ALEXANDER KOONTZ by 1840 was in Cooper Co., Missouri. Doing some research, I have read that two of the sisters married Grose men. The other thing that I am interested is the KOONTZ CEMETERY at Kesler Cross Lane. Is there a list of people buried there that one could get? Thanks for any help. I do know that SUSAN MARTIN's parents were ROBERT MARTIN AND MARY CRAIGE/CRAIG.

Margaret Jane (Hart)Bailes wife of Robert Bailes, dau. of Samuel and Margaret Hart. Any realitives there? Margaret Jane was born 1838 in Alleghany Co. VA and died in 1897 in Nicolas Co. WVA and is buried in Bailes Cemetary. Samuel and Margaret Hart, her parents, were born 1792 and 1799 in VA, I think ,and are buried in Kesslers Cross Lanes Cemetery. I don't know when they passed on. Looking for any information on Robert Hamilton and Francis (Fannie daughter of James Peebles and Ann McCandless) Peebles. Robert died in 1863, Fannie in 1880 ?. Unfortunately it does not list Fannie as being burried in the same cemetary. Any information would be greatly appreciated. Try to tie up some loose ends, will be visiting in August this year. Children are Maria Louisa and John Alexander.

I am looking for info on Thomas Smith/Smyth b. 1747 England; came to America 1760 and married Elizabeth Young in 1795. They both died before 1830 in Nicholas Co.
