Would like information about Amanda Martin Unger b. 8 May 1834 d. 11 Jan 1923 who married William Unger b. 4 April 1819 d. 23 April 1892. I have no marriage date. They were both buried in Mt. Olivet Cemetery, Morgan County WV. They had children: Lucinda, James B. and Charles Clement Unger.

I have conflicting information on William Unger son of Nancy Meeks and John W. Unger, son of Nicholas Unger. Was he married to Amanda Martin or Susan Braithwaite? There are two William Ungers in Morgan and Frederick Co born about the same time. One is married to Susan Braithwaite and moved to Berkeley County WV. The other is married to Amanda Martin and stayed in Morgan County WV. Which one was the son of John W. Unger?

Thanks for any help.

Joy Unger Henning

If you have a white female in your family who has been missing since about May 10, 1950 30-35 yrs old - found near Hancock Bridge in Morgan County, WV on old US 522 you may wish to
look on www.doenetwork.org This site may be helpful to others as well. There has been a national story this week in the papers about finding lost ones on this site. In this particular case look at Case Index 45.
In this particular case a small white woman with auburn hair was found who was said to have died of strangulation. Considering that US 522 ran through PA and Maryland and Virginia -- she could have likely been from one of those areas. Maybe someone's mother, grandmother, or sister?

Children of Nicholas Unger b. 1759 d. 1814 m. Catherine Hollinger

I would appreciate input from other Unger researchers on birth dates for the children of Nicholas Unger b. 1759 Lancaster Co PA d. 1814 Morgan County VA m. Catherine Hollinger.

Old information I have shows the children's birth dates as:
Mary b. 1782 m. Wm Kendricks
Catherine b. 1784
Nickolas b. 1786
Henry b. 1788
John W. b. 1790 m. Nancy Meeks
George b. 18 Feb 1796 m. Elizabeth Bailey
Daniel b. 1794
Washington b. 8 Feb 1808 m. Nancy Ambrose

I have been studying the will of Nicholas Unger dated Dec 24, 1813 in Morgan County VA. He names children Mary, Catherine, Daniel and John as heirs who appear to be of age. He also names children Nicholas, George, Henry and Washington who have not yet reached 21. That changes the picture of the birth dates of the above children.

Mary, Catherine, Daniel and John W. had to be born before 1793 to be over 21 in 1813. John W. bought land in Berkeley County in 1805 meaning he had to be born no later than 1784 (to be 21 in 1805). That means that Nicholas, George, Henry and Washington were all born after 1793. George and Washington dates are firm, but birth dates for Nicholas and Henry above must be incorrect. Daniel is the executor of the will and may have been the oldest male. I have not been able to locate him in later census records to confirm his birth date.

Also, just for information, I have been searching the "Pennsylvania Archives" series which are now on-line and find Nicholas Unger listed in at least five places as being in the PA Militia in Lancaster Co. In two places he is listed as an Ensign. His last entry is in the 8th Class, Lancaster County,PA Militia in 1785. He is taxed in Berkeley County VA (now Morgan County) in 1787, but he may have been taxed in Lancaster Co PA later than that.

I would appreciate any thoughts or additional information on the birth order of his children. Thanks.

Joy Unger Henning
I can identify the 5 children of Henry and Anna but there are descendants of theirs in the photos too that I cannot ID. I believe they are descendants of the 2nd son, Mathias (Tice) or possibly of the 2nd youngest son John Wesley Ambrose. Anyone who is a direct or close descendant and thinks they may be able to ID anyone, please give me an EMail address and I will share.
These lines are also related to Hess:

Hey Ya'll,
Here is my Mother's genealogy as far as I know so far. My GGGGgrandparents were George and Elizabeth Peck Bishop. I knew the parents of Elizabeth were Corad and Catherine Peck. I've recently learned that the father of Catherine was Israel Friend. Conrad Peck1 and Catherine Friend Peck were among some of the first settlers in Bedford County, PA. (now Fulton Co.). They had lost much, including children, to Indian attacks. They were some of the Founders of Tonoloway Primitive Baptist Church in 1752. Early Church members had to have Sentries posted at the doors in case of attack. Israel Friend is my GGGGGGgrandfather. My other GGGGGGgrandfather is the Rev. Joseph Powell, 1st. Pastor of Tonoloway Church from 1765 until his death in 1804. Rev. Joseph Powell and Rachel rose Powell were the parents of Mary, who married Jacob Bishop. They were the parents of George Bishop. Any of ya'll connected to my lines? John C. Bass,Sr. in S.E. Mississippi.

For more years than I am willing to admit, I have been researching the Michael family of Morgan County WV. Over the years I have exchanged information with cousins and other researchers. The project grew too big to publish so I created a website for any wishing the info. I do not take credit for the research since many contributed to this project. I am merely a compiler wishing that all I have collected does not get lost in time.
If your line connects I’d like to hear from you. If info is incorrect, please let me know. If you wish to add info on your branch, let me know. Contact information is on the site.
Believe me when I say, if you have family in Berkeley Springs WV then you are probably in the enormous family tree.
My hobby became an obsession.

From her obituary in the Morgan Messenger on June 3, 1909 -
Mrs. H. C. MCBEE died very suddenly at her home in Allen district (Morgan County) WV, May 28, 1909, aged about 67 years. Interment was on Friday at Spohrs Cross Roads, the funeral being largely attended. Mrs. McBee had made preparations for getting supper, and as no one was at the house at the time it is supposed that she became ill and laid down on a couch, as she was found there by her husband when he came home. He thought her just taking a nap and was careful not to disturb her and it was some minutes before he discovered that she was dead. She is survived by her husband (Henry Clay MCBEE) and her children as follows: Mrs. T. W. NORRIS, Mrs. Ida GOODMAN, Mrs. Mary HOILE, Mrs. Thomas HOUSEHOLDER, Mr. Harry MCBEE, and Mr. Charles MCBEE.

In January 1862, a woman named Mary Ha*y married George Sirbaugh, in Frederick co. Va. They lived in Hampshire co WV. (I'm getting to Morgan co, honest!) She died sometime between 1864 and 1869 and *may* be buried in Mt. Hebron cemetery in Winchester.

In May 1869, George married a second woman named Mary. Mary #2's grandchildren remember she had a stepson named John who was being raised over in Paw Paw (told ya) by his maternal grandparents, presumably the Ha*y family. He visited as "recently" as the early 1920s.

Long time ago, someone said that the gravestone at Mt Hebron for George W. Sirbaugh was just a place-holder; George and the 2nd Mary are buried at Fairview Lutheran, Gore. I checked Mt Hebron's index at Handley and it has no Ha*y family, but then it doesn't go back to the 1860s, either.

I have been unable to locate the Ha*y family on the 1860 or 1870 census for any of the counties near PawPaw. I can find no John Sirbaugh in either VA or WV who is anything near the right age group (under 12).

Do any of the Ha*y names in the surname list ring a chime with anyone?

Cheryl Singhal
Though I have been told otherwise (was given a different set of children) it seems that this is the family of John William Ambrose and Mary Post in the 1880 Morgan Co. census.
J. W. Ambrose 31 (b. 1849)
Mary C. 25 (b. 1855)
Norman D. 3 (b. 1877)
Gertie W. 1 (b. 1879)
Post, Frances 23 sister-in-law
Can anyone confirm my deductions?
I am trying very hard to put the history of my husbands family together, I have found William Hobday II, married to Mary Stotler Dawson, I need to find his parents, I know it was William Sr. and possibly married to a Christina ?? I am thinking it could be Widmere but can find no links to prove this, I would also like offspring of any generation. I have Stotler generations from John I to present but not Michael, Miller and Hobday's.

Sarah FLETCHER, wid. of William, in Paw Paw ca. 1905-1915? Did she die there?

I'm trying to find a death/burial/cemetery record for Sarah (Smith) FLETCHER, widow of William FLETCHER, who died ca. 1915. Husband William Fletcher died in 1899 in Hardy Co., WVA, and is buried at Rock Oak Cemetery near the line with Hampshire Co. I don't have a burial listing for the cemetery, so I'm lacking death information for his wife Sarah Smith Fletcher. Sarah was last "spotted" in the 1910 census for Morgan Co., Paw Paw. She and grandson Floyd Fletcher were working for Drs. James and Raymond KIRK of Paw Paw; Sarah was 76, and Floyd, 8. She's nowhere to be found in 1920, and is presumed to have died before 1917 (at which time WVA death certificates for Morgan Co. become searchable--no Sarah there). Sarah had some Fletcher family in the Paw Paw/ Cacapon Dist. area, which might explain her placement as a housekeeper for the Kirk brothers (James Kirk was a widower with children).

My hope is that there's an obituary for her out there somewhere, or a citable death record. She's likely to be buried with her husband William Fletcher down in Hardy Co. Sarah was a native of Bedford Co., PA, and with husband William raised 15 children, 13 of whom were living in 1910, some in the Hardy/ Hampshire/ Morgan area.

David Fletcher
Richmond, VA

Allice's parents were William (1828-1867) and Louisa (Settles) (c.1832-?) WHARTON. Two young children of William and Louisa appear to have been buried in Greenway Cemetry-Outer Circle but I have found no trace of other family members.
My family is seeking further information about Abraham Gross, who was born about 1785 and is listed in Census Records for Morgan County in 1830, 1840, and 1850. We also have his land grant from 1827 in Morgan County. But we can't seem to find out where he was born, or any information about his wife (except that her name was Catherine). They had 7 children: John, Martin, Peter, Dennis, James, Joan, and Sarah. Ring any bells?

I'm looking for information on James H. (1875-1932) and Minnie S. (1877-1964) Smith. I have found their gravesite in northeastern Morgan County. I'm not even sure if this family is related to my husband's family. All I know is that my sister-in-law recalls going to that cemetery when she was a youngster and looking at the gravesite. We know that the Smith name is in the lineage. James and Minnie should have a daughter Pauline Corrine Smith (married a Fisher in Martinsburg) and a son Sylvester Smith (married Evelyn Kettering). I am wanting assurance that Pauline and Sylvester's parents are James H. and Minnie S.

I'm looking for information on Charles Triplett O’Ferrall. He was born in Brucetown, Frederick County, Va., October 21, 1840 and was a son from John O’Ferrall’s second marriage, to Jane Lauren Green. It would appear the O’Ferrall’s lived in the Brucetown vicinity for about ten years. In 1850 the family appears on the Morgan County, Virginia census.

In May of 1861, Charles joined the 12th Virginia Cavalry (CSA), at Winchester, as a private. Later in the war he was promoted to Lieutenant Colonel.

After the war Charles Triplett O’Ferrall graduated from the law department of Washington College, Lexington, Va., in 1869 and was admitted to the bar and commenced practice in Harrisonburg, Va. He was a citizen of Harrisonburg from 1869 to 1893. He was elected to a term has Governor of the State of Virginia 1894-1898.

At least three generations of O'Ferralls lived part of their lives in or near Martinsburg, WV (VA).. John O'Ferrall, father of Charles also participated in variousbusiness ventures. For example he owned a grist mill and the associated land. John and his family ran a hotel/coffee house near Berkeley Springs. John also served as clerk of court.

Any additional information on the O'Ferrall family (especially Charles) would be greatly appreciated

Joseph and Mary Smith; 1810

The 1820 census shows a Joseph Smith family with many children living in Morgan county, WV (VA). I'm quite sure that one of the sons was named Joseph as described below in this biography. I am interested in knowing who his brothers and sisters were.
---------------------------------------------------------
From "History of Saline County, Missouri" St. Louis Missouri Historical
Company, 1881

Joseph Smith, P. O., Slater. Son of Joseph and Mary Smith, was born
June 17, 1814 in Morgan county, Virginia. His father and mother were
both natives of Virginia. He remained until he was nineteen years old
on his father's farm. In the spring of 1838 he moved to Fayette county,
Ohio, remained there several years, and then returned to Virginia. In
1842 he married Miss Elizabeth Compton, daughter of Jonathan and Mary
Compton, of Virginia. In 1844 he moved to this county, and settled
first near High Hill. In 1846 he purchased the farm he now lives on, to
which he has added by subsequent purchases, until it now amounts to
ninety-four acres of land. Mr. Smith has five children, three sons and
two daughters. Two of his sons died in early manhood, and also one of
his daughters, dying after she was married. The other daughter is
married, and living, with two children. Mr. Smith has made his property
by industry and economy. He is a member of the C. P. Church.
James Monroe Kerns of Berkley Springs

I am working on the lineage of my ancestor, James Monroe Kerns born December 1858 near Berkley Springs in Morgan County. At the age of 13 he left to make his home with a half sister, Mrs. Peter Riner in Douglas County, Illinois. He married Mary Barbara Keiser in Douglas County, Illinois in 1882. Upon the death of her father, Mary was raised by a John Kerns family and then with Thomas Kerns family units. I hope to connect with a family decendent to understand this family unit. Thank you.

I am looking for a copy of the 1920 Morgan County census or if someone knows if a Vandiver (Vandever) Kelly Darrah (Derrow, Derrah) is listed in it. I have heard rumor that some time after 1917 he "disappeared" from his home and no body has been able to locate information on him as of yet.

Thank you for any help!

Hoping to find someone with a listing on Greenway Cemetery. Or find a site on the Web with a Greenway listing. A current phone number, if all else fails. I am trying to document the correct date of death on my Hovermale/Hovermill ancestors buried there. A 'source' book has one date and family records show another, would love to find out which is correct.

Thank you for your time
Marsha
