Hi, Virginia, nice to hear from you again. Hope you are feeling well.

My wife, Mary, is descended from Margaret Hartley who married James House, who had a daughter Dianah House who married Aaron Boxwell. Like you, she is descended from James Boxwell and Catherine Farrell, but I believe the similarities end there. She is descended from a different Boxwell daughter (Catherine, who married Absalom T. Kesler).

Lately, I have been researching the Hampshire and Morgan counties land and tax records to see what more I could learn about William Biggerstaff, John Hartley, and James House. I am looking for documentation of Margaret being John Hartley’s daughter. I’m trying to find the “friendly” law suit you mentioned that had been filed by Margaret Hartley against her siblings. You mentioned that you discovered this in a newspaper while in Morgantown, apparently at the West Virginia State Archives. I see that the archives has a newspaper, “South Branch Record,” that dates from 1832. I did not see any other Hampshire County newspaper or Morgan County newspaper that went back that far. Does that sound familiar?

I am also aware of the “South Branch Intelligencer,” which has abstracted parts published by Vicki Bidinger Horton. It dates from 1837. Maybe this was what you found? The abstracted parts do not mention such a law suit, but the full newspaper publications might reveal something.

Rich
Did you ever find out what was in Box 6A? I, too, am looking for more about the John Hartley family in Morgan County. My wife is descended from Margaret Hartley who married James House. Virginia told me about the "friendly" suit to settle John Hartley's estate. I understand she got the information from a newpaper story while in Morgantown. I'm guessing it was a Hampshire County newspaper. Thanks - and thanks for the tip on the records.
Good Morning,
I just found the Ancestry message boards & your post. We are researching my grandmother's family. Her father was Isaiah Caw (1858-1933 Montgomery County, OH). I have found his father was George F. Caw (1823-1880 Miami County, OH) and his father is most likely Joseph Caw (1790-1838 m. Sophia Wagoner and resided in West Virginia). We thought his father was Peter Caw Sr. (b. 1751 Lancaster, PA & d. 1837 Morgan County, WV). Do you have any additional information or sources I can check? I am so excited--I thought we were "stuck." Thanks for sharing! Marilyn
That's as far back as I have been able to go.
I know that the family imigrated from Germany (Prussia ?) but unable to locate info. Many different spellings of the name I think have prevented a good search trail. Any info you have would be appreciated. Thank you,

Wallace Post -

Facts you should know about the early census records -
All census records [1790 – 1840] prior to the 1850 census ONLY listed the head of household; whether male or female.

NO specific age was stated for any family member
NO place of birth was stated – city, state, or country
NO city, town, or village is stated – only the county; however some census takers listed the township
NO street address was stated
NO marital status was stated – single, married, widowed, or divorced
NO family relationship was stated – brother, sister, cousin, son, daughter, wife, inlaw, etc…
NO occupation was stated
NO parental birthplaces are stated
NO race was stated [but assume “white”]

1850, 1860 & 1870 census records do not show family relationships, marital status or parental birthplaces.

Step children are not enumerated as “step” children
Adopted children are not enumerated as “adopted”
Grand children are not enumerated as “grand children”
Orphaned children were not enumerated as "orphan"

1850 is the 1st census that shows all family members

1880 is parental birthplaces and family relationships +++

1880 - Min. Wallace Post does not appear on any census.
Is Min. his 1st name ???

Min Wallace Post
Born: 14 May 1834 Morgan, Virginia
Died: 18 Feb 1881 Iola, Kansas
he married -
Susan Elizabeth Terrill
Born: 15 Jun 1838
Died: 1 Feb 1908 in Iola, Kansas, USA
Marriage: 8 Apr 1858
children -
Children Sex Birth
Henry Evans Post M 15 Aug 1860
Oliver Post M 24 Feb 1862
William Foster Post M 3 Dec 1867
Minnie Ann Post F 18 Feb 1869
Edna Earl Post F 7 Sep 1872
Sarah Etta Post F 8 Dec 1874
Bennie Ellen Post F 26 Jul 1878
Gertrude May Post F 1 May 1880

KS Vital Records -
Vital records were created as part of a civil registration to collect information on population growth and causes of death to control epidemic's.
Kansas didn't officially start collecting birth and death records until July 1, 1911.

Jason Mathewson
Chief of Certification
Kansas Vital Statistics

Therefore, NO KS death cert. is available for his as he died before KS implements death registrations.
Early Youngbloods in Morgan County

Would like to connect with anyone researching early Morgan County Youngbloods. 1820 Census has Samuel Youngblood *000100/001 (b. 1794-1804) Daniel Youngblood right next to him b. 1794-1804 and on next page Andrew Youngblood (110001)b. before 1775. How were they related? Did these Youngbloods come to VA by way of York and earlier Lancaster Co PA. I find a Daniel Jungblut who married a Anna Maria Eliz. Heinrich in Lancaster Co PA and had a daughter Juliana b. Dec 1767. This Heinrich family is the same Henry family who later lived in York and then Morgan County VA/WV. Daniel Youngblood and Nicholas Henry served in the same Rev. War Militia in 1777 and I believe they were all related. Also looking for a William Speiss (variety of spellings). He married Julia Youngblood of Morgan County and later moved to Ohio and Iowa. Did he have a father William Spece (Speece, Speice) who was a brother-in-law of Nicholas Heinrich/Henry? Nicholas Henry's Morgan County Rev. War Pension file (he fought in the war from Pennsylvania) says he had a brother-in-law, William Speiss who moved to Ohio.

Judge Parker Enwright was Parker Francis Enwright Sr. He was the youngest judges (21) in the US ... He married Carolyn Jones in Florida and died when he was only 24 leaving a widow and a 2-year old Parker Francis Enwright Jr. Where did you get the 1903 year? I found 1904 in several sources. Whether or not it was 03 or 04 I cannot find any official record of birth for West Virginia. What baffled you about this ... Are you related? I am seeking a birth record for Parker, and any other information of this family during the time they lived in Davis, West Virginia. Frank was employed in the lumber business.
I know I'm 5 years late. But I am searching for info on Sheppard/Shepherd and Logue of Morgan and Berkeley counties.

My great grandfather was Harley Logue, son of John T Logue of Cherry Run. Harley's mother was Susan Charity Shepherd/Sheppard, daughter of Stephen Shepherd/Sheppard.

I know where Harley, John T Logue, Susan Charity, Sarah F. [Logue] Shepherd and Stephen Shepherd are buried. I took photos of their graves, except for John T. His grave is an unmarked grave outside of Cumberland, MD. Susan, Sarah, and Stephen are buried outside Hedgesville, WV in an old overgrown cemetery, which I believe might have been originally a slave graveyard.
