well as years go by I often wish I had gathered everything. I went to my mothers home cemetery and when asked if I wanted a picture of a Wilson tombstone and I said I don't have any Wilsons. Looked for great grand mother Harvey for 2 more years only to find her and her second husband there in the home cemetery. I don't recall much being legible there but will take any I can get. It was a small spot in the woods. I am Gonoe-Ball, Richmond, Harvey, Swope, Lilly, Law & Ellison mixture.

any Monroe, Mercer, Summers or Raleigh names I might help with?

OK At the intersection you see a white house facing the road on your right if coming from Peterstown. The cemetery is in the woods above & behind that house (was pretty well cleared when we were there.

Tricky part, continue PAST that house to the very first drive way and it hooks back towards the cemetery as you go up. This is actually a driveway for two homes, I parked in front of the first or lower one and walked into cemetery. (no one answered the door but a neighbor the next house down told me how to get in there. BE CAREFUL and do not pass the drive or you have to find somewhere to turn around and come back on that narrow road.

If there are any legible markers please photo and share. I have 'H Gonoe; in base of tree but the only real marker for a Peters wife [this is in one of Wm Sanders books I think]that I remember did not come out. The neighbor who told me the way in thought she had earlier photos of the cemetery and if she located was going to send them but I never heard from her again.

I'd like to visit the Peters cemetery on Bozoo Road. Is it accessible from the Bozoo Road? Think it is just past the 24/4 intersection, on east side of road. If you could post any additional info on the location, it would be much appreciated. Thanks,

George

The Thomas Campbell Green in which you question where he was born is my grandfather. He was born in Cashmere, Monroe County, WV.

Thomas Campbell Green married Mabel Margaret Smith.

His biological mother is Maude L Campbell.
His biological father is Robert Green.

Grandfather was born but his mother passed away when he was about 18 months old.

Grandfathers parents had an agreement that if died that grandfather would be raised by his mothers parents, being why you see him living with them.

Years later, my grandfather married again and wanted to get his son (Thomas Campbell Green) back in his possession. It ended up going to the surpreme court..this was the first case in WV of this type. His father did not get him back however they did see each other.

Should you like a copy of the court case, or have other questions...please let me know by sending e-mail to touchingrainbows@suddenlink.net.

Please note: On e-mail the subject matter must say "GREEN FAMILY TREE" or I probably won't open it.

Julie

I hope I am not out of line for suggesting this but...I have recently been researching the "Indian" ancestry of my family as well and have gotten side-tracked into a study of the Melungeons in the Appalachian Mountains. Many family lines in that area (Greenbrier and adjacent counties) have "stories passed down" about Indian ancestors. Ball seems to be a fairly common name among the Melungeons; my ggggg-grandmother was a Mary Ball. A good first book to read on this subject is "The Melungeons: The Resurrection of a Proud People," by N. Brent Kennedy. It has opened my eyes to new lines of research.
Arley Meadows

Elizabeth Ann MURDOCK always said she was born 12 Aug, 1812 in Monroe Co WVA. I cannot place her in any Murdock family.
I checked the 1810 and 1820 censuses for that county without finding any likely match. She married in Fayette Co WVA in 1832 to George Washington Vance. I checked that county's 1820 and 1830 censuses for a Murdock family without any luck.
I have searched records at Familysearch.org and Ancestry.com for parents for Elizabeth Ann Murdock.

I will be truly appreciative of any info that will lead me to the names of her parents.

Regards, Bettye

So it is not the first marriage for either.
John's sons are Samuel; James; George; William; & Joseph.
Catherine's children are Christopher; Charles; & Margaret.
Trying to find who the mother was of John Smith's 5 sons.
Catherine's 3 children use the name Smith so she may have married a Smith before John Smith.
Appreciate andy info you can offer.
Sandy

Thank you for that version which is probably closer to the truth. As I do not count myself under PETERS ancestry (at least not proven to me) but that William Ball 3grt Gf was the son of a legitimate marriage to Hannah by 4grt gf William Gonoe, it is all just interesting reading but I would like to visit the Peterstown Cemetery and see Old Man' Christian Peters marker. I have been to the Peters Cemetery on the road to Bozo and photographed the "H. Gonoe 1823" rock..

I hope you can pursue clearing up the parents and life of Hannah Ball 1785-1823 [1823 as shown on rock) or 1830 (as others have it). Several family tale versions exist.

You may want to check this out. From what I've read - Peterstown was not named after Christian Peters, though that story has been passed down. Check out http://www.wvculture.org/history/agrext/peterstn.html by R. F. Fleshman, written in 1924.

"Among the early settlers Christian Peters was one of the most prominent. He was a man of energy and push and to him must be credited , among his various enterprises, the building of the first grist mills in the community, of which there were three on Rich Creek -one at the head of the creek, one on the Davis Farm (or road thereto, B.L.C.), and the third where Heslep' s mill now stands and which was the nucleus of Peterstown. These mills were quite different from the flouring mills of today and were very crude and rough affairs that would not be considered now as effective for grinding pig feed.

While speaking of Peters it may be well to correct some erroneous statements concerning him - namely, that Peters Mountain was named for him, that his first settlement was at Peterstown and that he was the first white settler In the community. Peter's Mountain was named for Peter Wright who lived where Covington now stands but who explored the mountain chains for many miles westward. Peters' first home was two miles east of the present town of Peterstown, which had its origin several years later when he built his mill here and established his son John as miller and wagon maker and afterwards came himself and made his home with his son (mistake: Peters' son's home was on the hill in n.w. part of town, built in 1812; whereas the house Peters built for hisself was on the main street on the town, diagonally across now from Mr. Terry's s store, where there is now a garage, and here he kept tavern - this place became the home of Peters' daughter and her husband George Spangler, who cared for her parents in their last days; the house burnt to the ground In 1918, and was then called "the Jim-Ed Spangler house") statement by B.L. Clark, a Peters descendant)

Peters could not have been the first white settler in the community, as he did not come until 1784, while Wood's Fort was built in 1773 and Captain Woods furnished his quota of fourteen men from this community for the Battle of Point Pleasant in 1774, ten years before the arrival of Peters."

OK I should have looked first, you are correct about Sgt. The old man was Sgt in Capt Jeremiah Beasley's Co in 1781 in the Virginia Regiment of Col Jack Willis.

There were father & son C Peters The older Christian 1760-1837 was the one Peterstown is named for and supposedly by family lore Hannah's lover, a son C Peters (Conrad) 1786 [Hannah 1785] and a grandson Christian 1812. Yes the old man was married and had several legitimate kids by Anna Fudge.

All references I saw early on concerning Hannah were "old man Peters" and that would not fit the son, C Peters or the younger Christian. I was running CSA Sgt Peters in with the older family, my error. Things slip a little as time, a lot of it, goes by. Sorry Keep digging.
Thanks for your response - good point on the marriage consent - I agree with you. Joseph was probably not Hannah's father. It was Kesiah who gave permission.

Could Sgt. Christian Peters and "Old Man Peters" be one-in-the-same? I did find that St. Peters had a wife and child of his own, but wasn't he also much older than Hannah and could have also had children with her? That wouldn't be the first time an older man had children with two different women.

As for the Indian part, still searching for answers to that one!

as a descendant of William Ball son of William Gonoe & Hannah Ball I have a comment about the marriage permission. It appears 'to me' given by Kesiah for her daughter Hannah and her mark WITNESSED by a Joseph Ball & C Peters. I do not think this Joseph was the father because as such it would have been up to him to give permission, not the mother.

Although I have no DNA for William (Gonoe) Ball, he was born May 18, 1813 well after Hannah's marriage to his father William Gonoe on Feb 18, 1812.

The two children Joseph and Nancy by Peters while Hannah was single, I understand were taken in by Old man Christian and his wife and cared for until grown, why not -they were his. If the third child, William, was also his, then why not do the same for him?

I think you will find Sgt C. Peters was a legitimate son with his own wife and also he was not the "old man Peters" that Hannah took up with and later went back to leaving the younger William and his father, but then I wasn't there was I.

As to the Indian part, I have seen the inscription for Nancy and wondered if Kesiah was an Indian as well but then I thought she quite possibly might have been a slave on a Ball plantation when Hannah was born, thus the Ball name.

Tombstone, carving on rock, in the Peters cemetery with "H. Gonoe" is probably Hannah. Will be interesting to see if this can be solved. William Ball 1813/1879 m. Dicey Cadle 1814/1889 and they were my 3grt grandparents. Good Luck.

I am researching this family for a descendant of the Ball/Phillips family and want to make sure I understand the story of the family. If anyone has any knowledge and can help me out, I would greatly appreciate it.

As I understand it, Nancy Virginia (Ball) Phillips (1802-1864) was married to Vincent Phillips (1800-1892). She was the daughter of Hannah Ball and Sergeant Christian Peters(1760-1837) who were not married (Sargent Phillips was married to someone else), but had at least 2 children together - Nancy Virginia and Joseph Ball.

Hannah Ball was supposedly a full-blooded Cherokee Indian, and as such, Nancy would have been half-Cherokee.

Nancy later married a William Gunnoe (see attached marriage record)but never had any children with him. He supposedly left her. Christian Peters and Hannah's parents Joseph and Kesia also signed/left their mark on the marriage certificate. Joseph gave permission for his daughter to marry William Gunnoe.

On Nancy Virginia (Ball) Phillips gravestone (see attached), it says "Our Indian Grandmother" - but that just means that the grandchildren wrote that - no actual proof she was Indian - it could have been legend.

Is there any proof that Nancy Virginia Ball and her mother Hannah were Cherokee Indians? Where did this story come from?

If anyone else can contribute and help, I would appreciate it!

Thank you!

Cathy

I just looked at the matches yesterday and saw Your Michael Mamczur and the others, My mother was a Nickell and I sent the DNA kit to her brother and all the matches were different surnames.
One family member said my gr=grandfather John Calvin Nickell was adopted and looking at the 1850 census records he was not listed, Then in 1860 he is waith a Mary Nickel so went bak to the 1850 and found Mary and he was not there so now know he was adopted.
With the different surnames the adoptions go way back in time, The Halplogroup puts them in europe so the black plague may have had something to do with it.
Well Cuz we may never find a common ancestor as I have no idea who John Calvin's parents were.
Thanks for contacting me, Maybe we will cross paths one day.
Bill Morgan, De Leon Springs, Volusia Co., Fla.

Hello Bill,
I looked up John Calvin Nickell on Ancestry and found your posting concerning his DNA. My grandfather, Michael Mamczur a Ruthenian from a tiny village is southeastern Poland is a Y-DNA match for him, both at the 12 marker and 25 marker levels!
In fact, Michael Mamczur is a match for Baehr, Hughes, Price, Hayde and Orman, also along with several others from North Carolina, West Virginia, Scotland, et al. No one from Poland! I have documentation placing the Mamczurs in the village of Huta Stara back to 1759. Our DNA connection must have been before then. Please let me know what you think!

Much time has passed since 2008. Here are a few corrections: Martin's wife's name was not Mary Elizabeth Russell. It was Elizabeth Russell. Martin later had a son he named Martin, and that Martin (his son) married a Mary.

We have also be able to piece together a few clues since 2008 as to how our Martin entered Tennessee. It appears that he may not have come directly from Gap Valley. Evidence seems to support the idea that he was born the son of a Martin and Agnes Turpin in Gap Valley. I believe that Agnes died shortly after giving birth, and the baby named Martin passed into the care of someone who could nurse him. He eventually ended up in Montgomery County, Virginia where the Love family took him. When the Love family left Virginia and moved to Knox County (later they moved to Middle Tennessee), they took young Martin with them. It was then in Knox County that Martin met Elizabeth Russell who had come to the area with her father, Andrew Russell, to visit with her brother who had moved to the area much earlier. While there, Andrew died, and Elizabeth remained in the area. In 1805 Martin Turpin and Elizabeth Russell married.

That's my take on how it all happened. Anybody out there have any thoughts on my theories?

Hello,
I too have been trying to find the father of Archibald. I thought I had it with Mesach(sp?) and his wife Patsy Akers. There is another son James Madison Thompson, who died in 1862 from Civil War wounds. His Widow Matilda Gouldy, went with her family to KY and remairried, She had tree children by her marriage to James M, who went with her and one was my Gret Grandfather. I checked a deed in Tazewll county that lists all the children and says that Elizabeth died in 1881. I found her in the Gallia County Ohio Census for 1880 witha son joseph and Daughter Margaret who was married. She stated she was a widow. Also the name was spelle Tomson. Since James Madison was born c. 1835 I am not sure if he is the son of Archibald, since the marriage to Elizabeth is in 1840 IN Monroe Co, now WV. I checked other records for deeds for Archibald, but none came up with any information. The land was given to Elizabeth by here brother David in 1853. There are other Thompsons in Monroe County, specifically a Robert, From the childrn's names of Archibald and Elizabeth they do not seem to come from the Mescach line, though there is a Leroy. I may plan a trip to Monroe County WV to see if I can find anything in the records there, expecially deeds.
Soncerely David Gunsallus, Easley, SC

B H Thompson, Monroe Co

I recently bought property on Green Valley Rd in Peterstown, W Va. The property next to me has a tombstone on it that reads B H Thompson and it looks like he was born October 8, 1840 and he died in April 1862. The dates are really hard to read. Looking in the area of the stone, there appears to be at least 1, maybe 2 more stones but they are broke off and I can't find them. The owner of the property is interested in knowing who it is. On the other side of me is the McDonald Wilson cemetary. Any help in identifying this person would be greatly appreciated.

I’m not related to any member of this family.

1940 is the last available census at this time.

Facts you should know about the early census records -
All census records [1790 – 1840] prior to the 1850 census ONLY listed the head of household; whether male or female.

NO specific age was stated for any family member
NO place of birth was stated – city, state, or country
NO city, town, or village is stated – only the county; however some census takers listed the township
NO street address was stated
NO marital status was stated – single, married, widowed, or divorced
NO family relationship was stated – brother, sister, cousin, son, daughter, wife, inlaw, etc…
NO occupation was stated
NO parental birthplaces are stated
NO race was stated [but assume “white”]

1850, 1860 & 1870 census records do not show family relationships, marital status or parental birthplaces.

Step children are not enumerated as “step” children
Adopted children are not enumerated as “adopted”
Grand children are not enumerated as “grand children”
Orphaned children were not enumerated as "orphan"

1850 is the 1st census that shows all family members

1880 is parental birthplaces and family relationships +++

You need to supply DOB's + birthplaces for Elizabth Thompson and John E Jones.
My grandfather worked at Fostoria Glass when he was in the 6th grade. He was born in 1884 so that would make him working there at about 1896. He went back there in in about 1929 with my mother and grandmother and had a glass bowl blown for her which I still have. I would be very much interested in seeing the picture you have. Please contact me through this email= bettyjhanna@aol.com. Look forward to hearing from you.
