I am looking for any information anyone might have on the history of Red Jacket, Mingo Co.,WV and the coal camp/boarding houses in that area between 1911 and 1920. My grandmother was sent to a boarding house that some of the out-of-town miners stayed at when she was around 12yrs old, she met my grandfather there while he was working for the Red Jacket coal company. My grandfather Calvary Runyon was born and lived (at the time) in Pike Co.,KY. Trying to find the proof of the story I've heard all my life of how they met, my grandmother Myrtle Salmons was born in Wayne Co., to an unwed mother and was sent to the boarding house at young girl to work. Any information would be helpful and greatly appreciated!

Gina Runyon Griffith

I've come across other people looking for them, but when I tried to contact them, their emails weren't up-to-date (plus, their last post was in 2001).

So, if anyone has any information on this line (specifically the Trent line), that would be greatly appreciated!!

Thanks!

Pam

I am seeking the services of a genealogy researcher familiar with the Mingo/Logan/Pike/Tazewell area to help me learn more about the Blankenship family in that area during the early to mid 1800's. I have worked the available on-line resources pretty hard and thought someone with more experience, familiarity and access to local records might help. Thank you,

Frank

PLEASE HELP ME!!! Italian coalminer

Hi everyone. I have been trying to find the biological father of my grandmother for a few years now. At first I thought the man's name was Charles Saunders, because that is the gist of what my great grandmother told me. But, I have never been able to find anything on this man or about this man. My grandmother (whom I have only met once) is extremely short, has narrow shoulders, olive skin, dark eyes, and has dark hair. All of these characteristics describe someone who is of Mediterranean descent, and that is what I believe her father was. My great grandmother told me that my grandmother's biological father was a coalminer, in the same town where she lived. So, I'm guessing it's in the Mingo Co. area or near there, like Logan or Red Jacket, etc. I belive the Saunders is possibly an adopted name. So, what I'm asking for you to help me with is to find possible Italian or some other type of Mediterranean Coal Miners who lived in the Mingo, WV area, and may have possibly moved to Jewell Ridge, VA after 1934-ish. His first name should be Charles, but I have no idea of a last name now. If you have family still alive, who might have known of him, or Eloise Brewer (my great grandmother), please ask them. I really would like to know who this man was and I need your help! Thank you so much for reading this and I will be grateful for any information that you have or even any assumptions!! Thanks again,
Christina

I will post them on Rootsweb.

So far, there are only a handful of us scheduled to be there.

If anyone would like to join us, we would appreciate all the help we can get. Especially if any of you are experienced in this sort of thing. We want to make sure we don't damage the tombstones.

Hope to hear from you!
Donna Nichols

I have a couple of family Bibles that are supposedly connected to the Hatfield line. It would be very helpful if I could find a fairly complete geneological tree of William A. Hatfield (b. 9/9/1839) and his progeny, marriages, births, etc., so I can corroborate the authenticity of these and help a friend out by establishing certain connections for him. Also, did Wm. A. (Devil ANse) Hatfield have a son named Jacob? Thank you.

I am doing research for a book on the Army Air Corps. during World War II. I am trying to find a person by the name of Ray Perrine. Spelling may be incorrect. I believe he was/is from West Virginia. I am not sure what town, but my father always said it was "Sintrilla", or something sounding similar. Could be "cinderilla". May not even be MIngo County. I have very little information to go on. My father William E. Jordan (1913-1996) and Ray were best buddies in Karachi, India from 1942 until they left China in about 1943. I would very much like to find Ray, or his surviving relatives. Can any one help?

Don Jordan
California City, CA

What information that my family has is that he served 8 years in prison, a man threw hot coals on my grandfather he turned and killed the man. My grandfather lived in Pikeville Kentucky but worked there in Williamson area as we have been told. Looking for anyone that may have any information on this or knows where I could possible go to there in Mingo County to find out more. As far as a time frame its 1915-1933 and this is just guessing? But any help would just be great.
My wife's grandfather, Thomas Chafin, died in Matewan on 14 February 1931. His obituary left a "PUZZLE". In addition to naming his surviving children and sister, Mrs. Elizabeth Hatfield of Huntington, he "LEFT A SURVIVING HALF-BROTHER WHO LIVES IN KERMIT". Thomas' father, after separating from his first wife, Matilda Varney, married in 1879, a second wife, Elizabeth New. This is no doubt the source of the half-brother. I have searched records and the hillside cemetery in Kermit but have been unable to determine the name of this half-brother. Your help will be appreciated.

He is a distant relative of mine and I don't really know him but from the accounts that I have gotten he lives pretty hard, ie., no phone, etc. I'd like to try and get ahold of him somehow without having to drive a longway into nomans land to a strange place I know nothing about. His dad had old photographs of my family that I really need to get copied and I'm sure they got passed on to him.

Chris,

I'm looking for information on George Moore. I found him in the 1920 census. He was married to Dasiy Runyon. They had two children; Sarah who married Dee Horton, and Mary Horton. George also had a son Bennie Moore. I was told he is buried in Mrytle Cemetery at Pigeon Creek. And he was born in Kentucky. Maybe Lewis County. If anyone know anything on George Moore please let me know. Thanks.....Ruth

Family Research!

Hello, I'm new to all this genealogy and family research and I thought I would start here. I'm a Morehead State University student and I have to do some family research for one of my classes.

My grandmothers maiden name is Collins, and from what I know her parents were Joe and Mollie Collins from Mingo County. I also have been told that (and it may not be accurate) that Mollie's father was named Thomas Hatfield. I have also found a death certificate of Joe Collins from 1935 and if its my actual great grandfather then it comes to me as a shock. The way he died according to the certificate and what I have been told does not match.

If anyone has any information, tips, or advice please let me know. I was thinking of driving the Mingo County next week, however I don't know where to go to do research.

I am a great granddaughter of FAJ and Mary and have been trying unsuccessfully to find when and where FAJ is buried. It seems that most people in Mingo and Logan County are unwilling to talk or give up any information on either of them. I have most of the family history on both, just would like to be able to find something more on FAJ. If there is anyone out there who is a descendent of his or might know the death date and burial location, I would be more than grateful to share any information I have on this particular line. Thanks.

The 1900 United States Federal Census shows: "James Runyon/Home in 1900: Stafford, Mingo, West Virginia/ Age: 50/ Estimated birth year: about 1850/ Birthplace: Virginia/ Relationship to head-of-house: Head/ Spouse: Matilda (they had been married for nine (9) years in 1900)/ Race: White/ Household Members: James Runyon, age 50; Matilda Runyon, age 42 (Matilda had give birth to six (6) children - four (4) of them were living); Brook Runyon, age 8; Thomas Runyon, age 6; and Charles and Elizabeth Runyon, both age 4 (probably twins). I suspect the other two (2) children who apparently were deceased may have been twins also. Additionally, the 1910 US Census which shows this family's residence as Gilbert, Mingo, West Virginia with two (2) more children - Gracie and Derney (Dewey??) both age 9 - ??more twins???. Unfortunately, nothing gives or shows anything about who James' parents are (it does say they were both born in Virginia). Additionally, the 1900, 1910 and 1920 Census estimated birth year and ages are confusing: 1900 - age 50; 1910 - age 53; and 1920- age 52. Any assistance would be greatly appreciated. Would really enjoy exchanging notes. Thank you.

I am interested in talking to anyone that may have information on my GGGrandmother Lucinda Meade born 1875 dtr of Priscilla Sturgill and James H. Meade.
Lucinda Married William White son of David White and Julie Ann Runyons. William and Lucinda married in Logan WV Nov. 14.1890.
As far as I can tell William died after the 1910 Mingo Census. Lucinda remarried a Henshaw/Hanshaw or Pickelsimer/Ticklesimer. My aunt just doesn't remember too much of what my grandmother told her since Lucinda died before 1925. My grandmother told my aunt that Lucinda died in Huntington Hospital but was brought back to Lenore, WV for burial.
Anyone with anything about this family I would appreciate hearing from you.
email me at: wvbluebird@netscape.com ...Please
Thanks Wanda
