Looking for information on the family of John S. HERSHBERGER born about 1815 in Wuerttemburg, Germany. His name may have originally been spelled Johannes S. Hirschberger. According to tax records from the 1860s, he was a brewer and owner of an eating establishment in Fairmont, Marion County, VA/WV. He and his wife Mary Ann (surname unknown) lived near Cumberland, Allegany County, MD,in the 1830s and 1840s, and later in Elk Garden, Mineral County, WV.

Their first known child was John Sebastian Hershberger who was born 3 Aug. 1840, near Cumberland, Allegany County, MD, and baptized as a Roman Catholic. He married Mary Rogers (1839-1913)(born Wales, British Isles) in about 1858. He served (1861-1866) in the 6th WV Cavalry (USA) during the Civil War. He and his wife lived around the Elk Garden, WV, area. John died in Westernport, Allegany County, MD, on 25 May 1925, and is buried there with his wife in Philos Cemetery. I have the names of all of their children and whom they married.

Other possible children of John S. and Mary Ann Hershberger were Francis, Joseph, and Mary Ann.

Would appreciate any information. Also willing to share any information I have.

Melinda

Lambert, Flanagan, Blue, Lease, Hollenbacks connected?

Can anyone tell me how these families are connected? I know this much, but still can't tie my data together:

1. John Flanagan m 1)Eleanor Rees 2)Julia Ann Blue. I show 1 daughter Eliza from his first marriage & 7 children from his second. One old history says his first wife was Julia Ann Hollenback, but the marriage record I found lists her name as Blue.

2. Keziah Blue m 1)John Lambert 2)Isaac Hollenback. I don't know if she had Lambert children. Isaac had children by his first wife, Susannah Johnson, but none with Keziah.

3. I have a deed from John B. Lease, wife Susan who migrated to Green Co., WI, dated 1854 selling their interest in the estate of John Lambert, deceased to John Flanagan. It states that they have legal standing based on the Will of John Lambert.

Was Susan a Lambert? Why would they sell to John Flanagan? Were Keziah & Julia Ann sisters? Who are the parents of John B. Lease? I show John Lambert d 1849, buried in Greenwall cemetery.

4. I have two other deeds from Isaac Hollenback & Kesiah, his wife, to Samuel Flanagan, William Flanagan, John Robert Flanagan, George Taylor Flanagan, & Mary Bell Flanagan, children of John Flanagan, and any other children said John Flanagan may have by his present wife for the consideration of natural affection they have for said children and $1.00. for all the lands of John Lambert, deceased.

There is a second deed with all the same people conveying livestock. These deeds are dated December 1858. They are explicit that only those named, or their heirs, are included, and no other persons whatsoever.

My list of children for John Flanagan has two additional children not listed, Keziah V. and Sarah.

Does anyone have the will of John Lambert? If John & Keziah had children, why would she leave out her children? Assuming that Keziah & Julia Ann were sisters, the Flanagan children would be her nieces & nephews.

I'd appreciate any information anyone has to offer on any of these families that might bring some clarity to these families' relationships.

LouAnn in NC

Hi, my name is Catherine, I was in contact with Debbie, who worked at the courthouse . I contacted her way back in the late 90's, sorry I know long time ago, But you see My mother was born on Nov 23 1945 in Keyser WV and Debbie found information for me. My mother was adopted and she said the information was just crossed out and that she found my Grandfathers obit. Also another live birth. I gave my mom all this information and did not save any of it for me. Well she has done nothing with it all these years and I would like to find my family information. She was adopted when she was 5 years old by Sidney lee Wauhop and Margret Elizabeth Sanders. Both are gone now. I know asking this is alot. But is there any way I could contact Debbie and see if for some unknown reason she recalls me? Thank so much Catheirne

I was told my Birh Grandmothers name was Cook or ravenscroft , Abgial for the first name.

I'm looking for information on this ancestor and his family. He was supposedly married in 1849 in Ireland, emigrated to Canada that year. Worked construction/contractor in Ottowa. 7 children born there, the latest one c 1869. His oldest child Katherine moved from there to Oakland MD in 1878. Was in Grafton WV in the 1880 census. (Can't find him in 1870) They are said to have retired in Pittsburg PA where Thomas died in 1899. His wife survived until 1919 (age 97) living with her daughter Katherine Rowan Rasche in Oakland MD.

I do not know exactly where or when he immigrated, I've been told to find immigration or naturalization records I must look at the county courthouse. Also, if anyone can tell me how to search for the records coming into Canada from Ireland, I would appreciate it very much. Thank you. He was possibly living in the town of Keyser.

David Smith's son was named Issac H. Smith and we found and Issac Smith born in 1809. Issac's ob noted his father was born in New Jersey and mother in Germany. Also, that Issac was born in Pennsylvania, where I do not know.

We are looking for information on James Smith, born abt. 1791, whose sister Elizabeth born abt. 1789, both in Virginia.

James Smith married Marie Hoffman (b. abt. 1795), on 29 October 1816, in Allegany County, Maryland. He was a cabinet maker. From Civil War records, we found that the Smiths lived in Cumberland, Maryland.

Children of James and Marie:
Elizabeth, b. abt. 1817
David, b. 18??
James, b. abt. 1824
Augustus, b. 1829
Ann Marie, b. abt. 1835

It is quite probable that James Smith was from either Mineral or Hampshire counties in West Virginia, as they both border Allegany County, Maryland.

We know that James Smith oldest dauther married A. Beale and was in the War of 1812 with him.

We have found with so little information on our Smiths, it is like looking for a needle in Haystack. So, we hope that a Smith descendant can help us break down our Smith brick wall.
I've assembled several pieces of information about Campbell families in Hampshire Co., but nothing that tells me anything about their family. Maybe someone on this list can help. Only a George Cambel b 1776-1794 remains.

Samuel and Runy are still living next door to each other, but in Green, Gallia Co., OH. There are too many Moses Campbells to be certain where he might have gone.

I have collected all these tidbits, but still have nothing to attempt to put together family members. Does anyone know any of these Campbell families in Hampshire Co., VA? Does anyone know the connection between the Campbell, Love, and Neilson families?

I'd appreciate any help anyone has to offer.

LouAnn in NC
Liller, Cooper Descendants

I am searching for descendants of my Dad's side of my Ancestry. My Grandfather was Arthur Earl Cooper. He was born January 20, 1889 or 1890 in Mineral County. His mother was Ellen Cooper. Family story has it that he was born as an
"Ashby", but for some reason he was raised by a man whose name was William Cooper, and Arthur took the Cooper last name. I have been unable to obtain a BC for him but on his marriage license it lists "no father given" and his Mother as Ellen Cooper. He married Grace Francis Liller, born 8-10-1885
in Mineral county, the daughter of Ashton C. and Melvina Parrish Liller. They were married at the home of Grace's sister, on 10-03-1909 by I.F. Roberts, Minister of the German
Baptist Church. I don't know if Arthur had any brothers or sisters. Grace had sisters, Lucy, Bessie, Hallie, and Blanche, that I know of, and no brothers. Arthur died in Newark, OH on 8-9-1953 and is buried in Nethkin Hill Cemetery. Grace remained a widow and died in Keyser WV on 2-8-1976, and is buried beside Arthur in the same cemetery. They had Children: Garland, Virginia, Delphia, Harold (my Dad), Darl, Lucy, and Richard. I would be interested in getting any information on any of Arthur and Grace's families, and to possibly find where Ashton and Melvina are buried. I there are still Liller's in the Mineral County area, and am curious as to perhaps meeting and talking to some distant cousins.

Need obit search - June 1914

I need assistance in locating an obituary for a woman who died on the Saturday preceeding June 21, 1914. The funeral would have been held a day or two after June 21.This woman was my great- grandmother's sister and lived in Keyser or immediate vicinity. I do not know her name, but her obituary would have listed Annabelle Garber of Palls, King William County, Va as a surviving sister. It may have also listed her birthplace as Mount Jackson, Shenandoah County, Va.
When my great-grandmother Annabelle was quite young, her mother died. I understand there were several other children in the family. The names of the other children are unknown to anyone now living. Annabelle was adopted by close family friends and took on their surname.
I recently came across a letter written June 21, 1914 by Annabelle's husband, where he mentions that his wife left today (June 21, 1914) for Keyser, W. Va. to attend the funeral of her sister, who died Saturday. I hope that by finding the obituary of this sister in Keyser, Annabelle's original surname, and maybe other siblings, can be tracked down -
Thanks much for any help,
Joanna

Hollenback Thomas' family; son William

Descendants of several lines of the family of Thomas Hollenback b abt 1745 & Margaret have pooled our information and created a website. You may view it here:
http://pages.suddenlink.net/lspyres1

We would appreciate hearing from others who have families who descend from this couple. They had 14 children, so there should be many!

I'm also trying to learn if anyone knows who this burial might be:
William Hollenback
Birth: unknown Death: Sep. 9, 1829 [b 25 Sep 1770]
age: 58y11m14d
Burial: Union Cemetery
Clarks Hill
Tippecanoe County, Indiana

The dates of this William Hollenback fit what I know about William the son of Thomas, except I have no information that would lead me to believe he would be buried in Indiana! His inventory is listed in Hampshire Co., VA [now Mineral] in 1830 and the sale was held there by his brother Isaac in 1832. Those dates certainly fit with the burial record.

William had a son William who m Ann Dawson. They lived in Mineral. His son Thomas lived in Hampshire Co. through 1845. I believe he migrated to IN by 1850 and to KS by 1900. His daughter Elizabeth m James Leatherman. They, too, migrated to IN between 1850-1860.

You may contact me at LSpyres1@suddenlink.net

LouAnn in NC

(This is a completely free, volunteer-run site.)

The photos have been collected and shared by descendants of James Buchanon Rees (1858-1930), son of William and Harriet. Some of these descendants now live in Greene County, Pennsylvania, leading to their inclusion on this particular web site.

We are anxious to correct any errors and are very interested in expanding this album to add related photos as well as genealogical information.
Medical emergency claims life of volunteer

By Michael Kantor, Staff Writer ( Maryland Independent Newspaper )

A Waldorf man died Thursday as a result of a medical emergency that caused a minor traffic accident. Thomas Richard Warnick Jr., 50, was found unresponsive in his 2006 Ford F-250 after he crashed into a vehicle and tree in the 2400 block of Pear Tree Court in Waldorf at 8:43 p.m. According to police, Warnick was on Wakefield Circle when his truck left the road and drove into the front yard of the residence, striking a parked vehicle and a tree, causing minor damage to both vehicles. The homeowner called 9-1-1 and reported that the driver was unresponsive. Charles County sheriff’s officers arrived on the scene and began CPR. Paramedics transported Warnick by ambulance to Civista Medical Center in La Plata, where he was pronounced dead. Cpl. D. Belfield of the sheriff’s traffic operations unit is investigating the crash. Warnick’s death is not being counted as a traffic fatality because he died as a result a medical emergency, according to police.
Charles County Sheriff’s Office spokeswoman Kristen Timko said Tuesday it is still unclear what the medical emergency was. Warnick, an ambulance driver with the Waldorf Volunteer Fire Department Emergency Medical Services Division 3, worked as a mechanic with Fitzgerald Auto Mall in Annapolis for 20 years. An 11-year member of the rescue squad, Warnick drove an ambulance for the company every Saturday night, said Vernon Monday, deputy chief of Waldorf EMS 3. ‘‘He was a very good volunteer,” he said Tuesday. ‘‘He gave everything from the heart. He would do anything for our members and the citizens. Warnick’s daughter, Cheri Burgess, and her husband, Chris, ran with him every Saturday night, Monday said. ‘‘He was just an outstanding, devoted volunteer,” Monday said. ‘‘He’ll be missed.”
‘‘He was a dedicated member and a very giving person,” said Dan Stevens, chief of Waldorf Volunteer Fire Department. ‘‘He exemplified the volunteer spirit. He was a giving and caring person, and this is a big loss to us.
POW/MIA Korean War, Maineral Co. KOLBERG

I am searching for the family of a soldier who was killed in the Korea War. When he entered service he gave Mineral County, West Virginia as his home of record. His remains were never recovered.

Soldier: WILLIAM VERNON KOLBERG
Born: Feb 21, 1906, Caucasian
Date of loss: July 11, 1950, POW

When the Korean War ended the enemy never returned or accounted for over 8,000 of our servicemen. They died in their hands. That was over 50 years ago. Since that time DNA has been perfected and also they are recovering remains in North Korea. Our government is obligated to return those remains to the proper family. DNA samples have been obtained from most of the families of these missing soldiers. For various reasons some families have not been located. There are 54 families in West VIrginia that have not been located. There is one family from Mineral County that has not been located.

When the remains are recovered and identified they will be returned to the family for proper burial. I am just an old (76 years) Combat Veteran out of the Korean War and thankful that I did return. I consider this a very noble cause and I hope that you can help in some way to find this family. For more information on the project you may go to http://www.jpac.pacom.mil/. My part in the program is to match up the lost families with the proper agency.

I will be grateful for any assistance in locating this family.

Harold Davis
40th Infantry Division
Korea ’52-‘53
910-791-2333
hgdavis@bellsouth.net
I am seeking information for the following families:
All are from Mineral County and surrounding areas:

Charles and Rebecca (Roberts) Leatherman
Amos and Laura (Shears) Leatherman
Hiram Leatherman
Susan Leatherman and A.P. Roberts
Ruhama Leatherman
Bertha Leatherman and Carmine Climico
Lula Leatherman and Henry Chucci
Anne Leatherman and Jim or Doug Love
Madeline Chucci and Don Brill
Elmira Leatherman and William Taylor Davis
Ervin Leatherman and Viola Viney
All of these were born in the Elk Garden, Oakmont, New Creek, Keyser, and McCoole areas.
Amos Leatherman died in Sept. 1897 from some sort of accident in Elk Garden, His wife Laura died in 1932 in Keyser WV after being hit by a train.
Bertha Leatherman Climico died in 1947 in McCoole Md from
liver cancer
Lula Leatherman Chucci died in Fairmont in 1967 and is buried in Queens Point Cemetery in Keyser, along with her Mom Laura, sister Bertha, and husband Henry Chucci. I am trying desperately to find where Amos is buried. Wherever he is buried so is my Italian GGrandfather Panfilo Climico
who died April 29, 1918 in Oakmont. Dr. W.H. Kight was the informant on his death certificate. Also buried with them are 3 children that my Climico Grandparents had that died either in birth or within a year or 2 of birth.
Susan Leatherman married Ad-Deniram Parker Roberts in June of 1865. He owned and operated a grist mill in Antioch WV, and died Nov 1845 at the State Hospital in Weston WV. Any info any one may have as far as newspapers, funeral homes, cemeteries, that were in use at the that time period would be greatly appreciated. I am wondering since Amos and Laura both died from accidents, if perhaps there may have been a newspaper article concerning their deaths. Thanks in advance for any responses my query might receive.

I have been able to access the wonderful images of original records posted online by the West Virginia Division of Culture and History. I am trying to document these records and am able to get page and line numbers from the image, but not book numbers as to where the record is located. I would like to know if anyone has a list of the volumes for the birth, death or marriage records that would note the title of each book and years covered for Mineral County? I live about 2 and a half hours away and have munerous connections to the Rees and Johnson families there among others. I am anxious to do a thorough job of documenting this information, but it is not easy for me to make a trip to the courthouse. I am grateful for any help or advice. Many thanks!

He married Artymincy aka Ella Hall and they had 8 children. I found him in the 1900 Braxton Co census but nothing else. I found a John Mcgraw in the 1880 Mineral Co Census and there is a Joseph who is 1 year old. It could very well be him but I want to know for sure. Can anyone help?

Thanks Melissa Barker

If there are any town census or county census or city directories for the period stated I would love to find them and search them.
For 20 years I have not been able to find my ancestor. In 1880 he was a carpenter for the railroad and a widower at age 38. His name was Charles B. Watkins. What happened to him? As far as I know, he did not apply for any Veterans of the Civil War pensions.

William+Rachel Anderson New Creek property/John Baker/Wm Smith

I am trying to untangle multiple William Andersons in 18th century Hampshire County. A key record may be the granting of 100 acres on New Creek by William Anderson and his wife Rachel to John Baker in 1772, 100 acres that Anderson in turn got from William Smith in 1764, and which Smith was granted by Lord Fairfax in 1762. The property in the 1762 grant is list as being on the north side of New Creek about a mile above Abrahams Cabbin.

There are two well documented William Andersons in Hampshire county at the time, and I am trying to learn if the William of New Creek is a third who lived there, or if perhaps, he is the one who lived up by Cresaptown on the North Branch. Any doucumentation on this William Anderson, John Baker or William Smith would be of great help as would knowing where "Abraham's Cabbin" was, or even who Abraham was.

Thank you in advance.

It is of an older woman, who looks like my Dodge relatives & a younger, dark haired woman, possibly daughter. My relatives were from Ontario, Canada - New York area & most settled in Wisconsin & Minnesota& one in Illinois. I believe the older woman is Polly Dodge married name Cobb or an unknown Dodge sibling, married name possibly Smith. Any information will be greatly appreciated.
Thank you.

I'm looking for information on the family of John P. Dawson, born 1787, who apparently lived in Hampshire Co in 1802 as a child/young man, probably in the area that is now Mineral Co. He later married Rebecca Dannison in Allegany Co MD. Father Edward Dawson Sr. Mother Elizabeth. Siblings Isaac Powell, Thomas, James, Elizabeth, Anna, Mahaliel or Mahala also called Macy, possibly others. An Elizabeth Dawson married an Edward Cockrell in Hampshire in about 1789 and moved to Ohio -- I'd like to find out if this is the same Elizabeth. Anna married a Magruder or McGruder. Mahaliel married a Ravenscroft and died in 1807. If you know anything about this family I'd appreciate it.

They had been married five years but had no children. Ollie was a carpenter and owned his house, but it was mortgaged. You might try looking for some records in that area....

Would someone kindly be able to do a lookup -- either courthouse visit or personally owned reference books -- for these people? My Gordon research in Warren County, Virginia has a solid brick wall. I am quite certain that their son, Ovie, md. Fannie Hilster, lived in Keyser, WV. Any information on these people is sincerely appreciated. Thank you. Estelle
