I'm trying to locate a marriage certificate/application for ones named Allen Johnson and Cheney Young. I'm not sure when they were married. I think sometime between 1916-1920. They lived in Vivian, McDowell County. She passed away in 1950 and he died in 1969. Any help in obtain a copy of the marriage certificate would be most helpful.

Thanks.

Trying to find out more info on a Cas Cline, born 1863 in Virginia. As of 1900, he was living in the Sandy River area with his wife Lydia M (born Mar 1871) and children Harrison (Feb 1884), daughter Collas (Nov 1891), son Chipley (Nov 1893), Maggie (Oct 1894), Biddie (Nov 1897) and daughter Essy (Jan 1900) Also living in the home was Cas's sister Ellen (Mar 1879). I can only find reference to Cas on two different census records (1900 and 1920) I have no info regarding if Cas was truly his given name, when he passed away and the maiden name of his wife Lydia. Any help greatly appreciated.

BURTON Marriage Records

Hi List,

I've tried searching a few counties for the marriage records of some BURTON siblings without any luck. I'm thinking the family was residing in McDowell Co. at the time, given a short biography I found on their father, George H. BURTON...per "Biographies of West Virginia Confederate Soldiers":

"GEORGE HENRY BURTON, of Bluefield, W. Va...From 1887 to 1891 he held the office of justice of the peace in McDowell county, removing at the end of his term to Bluefield, where he was appointed commissioner of the United States district court, by Judge J. J. Jackson, in 1892."

The marriages I'm looking for likely took place in that four year window when the family resided in McDowell Co. Could anyone easily look for the marriages of these three individuals? I'd certainly pay for any expenses incurred as a result of doing this look-up. They are children of George H. BURTON and his wife Vestina J. LANDRUM:

Rosa L. BURTON to Joseph T. GRAHAM abt. 1888
Elizabeth BURTON to unknown (possibly PADGET)
John P. BURTON to Hattie Ruth WEAVER abt. 1890

Any help you could offer would be so greatly appreciated.

WWI Vet from Gary, McDowell County, W. Va.Thomas G.Bailey

I live in East Bend, NC. A monument was found lying in a ballfield on one of our school ball fields. I searched the internet and found the person on the monument was from Gary, W. Virginia. His name is Thomas G. Bailey b. Nov.16,1892 and died Dec. 28, 1957. He was a WWI vet. I have no idea how the monument got where it was, but there was a lot of vandalism of graveyards several years ago. The veterans from Yadkin County, NC are trying to locate where this monument belongs. We don't know if Mr. Bailey lived in North Carolina, or after he got out of service went back to W. Virginia. I went to Ancestry. Com and found his military record. This is the information I have as listed on Ancestry. He was African(black). He was short, medium build. His address was 1177 Gary, West Va.,McDowell County, this was in 1917. There was no street address. He was aged 25 and single, African-American. I have not been able to pull up any birth or death records for him. The dates are from the monument. If you can help us out we would be very grateful. On his military records, his occupation was (L. Alisrew 4),this was hard to make out. He was employed by U. S. Z or 3/C.(could not tell it this was a Z or a 3). He was employed at #6 Nke(not sure about the N). Does anyone know where this place of employment was in 1917, or know of this man?
Thanks for your help.
Sherry in NC
I found a great great uncle's death certificate that stated he was murdered 13 Apr 1931 in McDowell County WV. It said he was shot in the chest at his home in Horsepen Va. Has anyone run across anything about this murder? Does anyone know anything about the family? His dad was John "Floyd" HARDY and his mother was Emily MCGEE. He had 2 brother's, Christopher Perry HARDY and one named after his dad, John Floyd HARDY. His brother Floyd died in 1931 and was married to Sally Lou GRAHAM. I can't find anything on Christopher Perry HARDY.
Crockett Alfred HARDY's wife was Ameila STEVENSON and she is buried in Horsepen Va with Alfred.
Any help with this would be greatly appreciated.

I am trying to find any family of my GGF Patrick Monaghan. He had a family in PA, my grandfather Edward James and my Great-Aunt Elizabeth. After their mother his wife, Willis, and then his second wife, Beatrice, died, they were raised by their stepgrandmother, Ellen Ruane. Patrick left the area and eventually settled in Mcdowell county. He married Mary May Hagerman. I would like to know if they had any children and if I have any aunts, uncles or cousins there. My gf and aunt did not discus the circumstances of Patrick's leaving, they were children at the time, and I wondered what he said about them. If any one has any information they would be willing to share, I would greatly appreciate it.

I am trying to do a family tree for my mother by this coming Christmas, but I cannot seem to find any information on my grandmother at all. I found Census Records and Military records for my grandfather, Oscar J. Roberts, but I cannot find any mention of my grandmother, Minnie Maybelle Lester(Maiden Name) Roberts(Married Name), nor her siblings Lottie Emma Lester (Golding), Effie Lester (Not sure on other info), I believe she had two brothers as well (One I believe if I remember right was Herbert from when I attended his funeral when I was small), but I could not pressure my mother for any more information with out questions arising as to why I was asking. I know they lived near Ike's Fork/Welch while my mom was growing up before they moved to Indianapolis Indiana at one point (Not sure what age my mom was), and several of my extended family live in Ike's Fork last I knew.
Hello all, hoping someone out there can help me. Being from out of state, I recently got the chance to visit the Mullins Cemetery on Ritter Mountain. While I didn't find what I was looking for, I was told by a couple of locals that there were 1 or 2 other cemeteries close by. No body could provide exact locations though. Does anyone out there know the names, locations and who is buried at these cemeteries. In particular, I am looking for the grave of an Erastus L. Adams. Any help appreciated.
James Oscar Cowan and Ethel Mae Unknown

I am looking for information about James Oscar Cowan and Ethel Mae ?

James Oscar Cowan was the son of James N. Cowan and Alberta Lindsay. I have his birth and death records.

In 1910 census he is listed in McDowell, WV. He is age 30 married 5 years. Ethel M. is age 25 married 5 years. She is the mother of 1 zero living at the time the census was recorded.

On 12 September 1918 James completed a WWI draft card in which he stated his nearest relation to be Ethel Mae Cowan of Keystone, WV.

I am looking for a marriage record for this couple from about 1905. I would like to know the wife's maiden name and parents' names.

I would also like assistance finding the couple in 1920 and 1930. I have tried my variations of the spelling of Cowan.

J.O. Cowan died on 11-23-1936 so he should appear in the 1920 and 30 census records. His death was recorded in McDowell. I would dearly love to know if this couple had living children.

Is there a library or source I can contact to see if their was an obituary for James in Nov. of 1936?

Many Thanks for any and all assistance.

Martha Rehm
msrehm@comcast.net

I am looking for information about my ancestors that lived in McDowell County. I would ask anyone wih McDowell County references to check for James N. Cowan his wife Alberta J. Lindsay Cowan. They were recorded in McDowell in the 1910 and 1920 Census records. James' death certficate lists McDowell as the place of death 21 Dec 1923.

Alberta's parents were also listed in McDowell in 1910. They are William Lindsay/Lindsay and Catherine Lucidan Hurst Lindsay/Lindsey. I would appreciate learning their death dates if they are available. I believe they both died between 1910 and 1920.

Thanks,
Martha

I am searching for the family of two soldiers who was killed in the Korea War. When they entered service they gave McDowell County West Virginia as their home of record. Thier remains were never recovered.

Soldier: CLARENCE V BUCKLAND
Born: August 2, 1929, Caucasian
Date of loss: November 30, 1950, KIA

Soldier; BILL THOMAS SIZEMORE
Born; Sept. 19, 1928
Date of loss; Sept. 7, 1951, KIA

When the Korean War ended the enemy never returned or accounted for over 8,000 of our servicemen. They died in their hands. That was over 50 years ago. Since that time DNA has been perfected and also they are recovering remains in North Korea. Our government is obligated to return those remains to the proper family. DNA samples have been obtained from most of the families of these missing soldiers. For various reasons some families have not been located. There are 54 families from West Virginia that have not been located. There are two families from McDowell County that has not been located.

When the remains are recovered and identified they will be returned to the family for proper burial. I am just an old (76 years) Combat Veteran out of the Korean War and thankful that I did return. I consider this a very noble cause and I hope that you can help in some way to find these families. For more information on the project you may go to http://www.jpac.pacom.mil/. My part in the program is to match up the lost families with the proper agency.

I will be grateful for any assistance in locating these families.

Harold Davis
40th Infantry Division
Korea ’52-‘53
910-791-2333
hgdavis@bellsouth.net
Sheptock, Dzugan, Hriso - Elkhorn - pre - 1910 to 1918
Greetings,

I am interested in searching for information about my family who were once residents near Elkhorn. I believe they may first have arrived there from above Pittsburgh between 1903 & shortly before the 1910 census. They were residents of Elkhorn and worked in a coal mine there until about 1918. My grandfather was a young man then and we have been told that he was some sort of pump tender. Is it possible to find out any information with regards to employee rosters for any of the mining companies at that time?

The names that I am interested in are three in number and vary in spelling.

They are: Sheptock, Sheptak or Septak, Dzugan & Hriso.

My maternal grandfather was Wallace Dzugan but could have been known by his step-father’s last name of Sheptock, Sheptak or Septak. His first name could have been Vasel, Wasil or Vasily. A possible WWI military registration card states that Wash Sheptock, age 21 was an employee of Upland C & C Co.

These families were of Ruthenian descent but could have claimed to be Hungarian, Slovak, Austrian or Rusyn. Wallace’s step-father was George Sheptock. The 1910 census records this family as: Sheptock. Also found on that census was a Frank & Mary Sheptock, possibly a brother to George. George’s wife, my maternal great-grandmother was also named Mary. While living in Elkhorn, George & Mary had at least 2 sons, John & George Jr. John was born on 25 May 1913 and George on 18 Jan 1917. It has been told that George & Mary may have had at least 2 other children who didn’t survive. My grandfather Wallace had a younger sister named Anna Dzugan or (Sheptock) who married Andrew (Andras) Hriso in May 1911, most likely in Elkhorn. Anna was 14 when she married Andrew. They had a son named John born on 18 May 1912. It has also been told that they also had a daughter named Mary born between 1913 & 1919 that didn’t survive.

I believe that they were probably members of St. Mary's Orthodox Church in Elkhorn, but today the church is located in Bluefield. Does anyone know whether the church accepts requests for records?

Any information with regards to any of these individuals would be greatly appreciated. Thanks for your attention to this matter.

Sincerely,

Michael Teed
