Oakdale Cemetery

My name is Theresa and I live in Ohio.

My mother and her family were from Wyatt, WV and she used to swim and Grandma used to take me swim at the bridge at Oakdale. Along the way, my mother or grandmother told me that my father’s grandparents were buried on the right upon the hill. Coming from Wyatt before the bridge and before the turn off to Joetown – back one street. Is this the Mason and Hawker Cemetery and would this also be considered THE Oakdale cemetery?

James Humphrey/Umphrey is to have been buried there in 1934. (He would be my great stepgrandfather)

His wife, Millie Ann Hayhurst Kuhnes Umphrey/Humphrey, was probably buried there in 1915. (my great grandmother)

Her first husband, Sanford Kuhens, may be buried there as well in 1912. (my great grandfather).

If this is the right cemetery…what kind of shape is it in? Do they still bury there? Are there any records or someone whom I can call to enquire?

Any help would be appreciated.
By 1900 they are in Mannington, Marion Co., WV. I found him in 1910 in Randolph Co., 8 years into his second marriage, so I'm guessing Lydia died. It would be sometime between 1900 and 1902. I'm looking for her death certificate, obit, place of burial etc. Any info would be appreciated!

This summer, I'd like to take my family to the site of Coon's Fort (a frontier fort) where some of my ancestors served during the Revolutionary War. Is the site marked in any way? (State marker? DAR marker?) Is it easily accessible? Would anyone know who the current property
owners are?

Thanks for any help!

- John J. Hood

A person whon grew up in the old town believes there was a cemetery near the Monongah Baptist Church that a pastor supposably knocked over all the gravestones in the late 1960s or 1970s and fenced it in. Am wondering if done with church board approval and possible reasons such as insurance or vandalism fears or if wacko pastor did on his own. This church is on Lyndon Avenue. The person lived on McCue Av.

She married Alpheus L. HUGHES in 1875. Alpheus died on May 7,1940 and according to his death certificate, he was a widower. They had a daughter, Ella M. HARDWAY who lived to be 100.(1876-1976). I think they lived in the city of Fairmont. Nancy was my great-grandfather's sister.

I have found a reference quoting Enoch Vincent as saying that the Vincent and Freeland familys suffered greatly from the Indians in Pennsylvania during 1779. He probably said this in the 1850s or so. In 1929, Sipe wrote the Indian Wars Of PA. I found the attacks in the book, and numerous Vincents and Freelands were killed and captured and their names given. However, there is no direct reference to William Vincent, Enoch's father. I was hoping to find someone who has an understanding of the Vincent family's relationships at in 1779. I would love to share my information.

Italians in Fairmont West Virginia

I found on Ellis Island that my grandfather Tommaso ANGOTTI's final destination was Fairmont West Virginia where his father Michele (Michael) ANGOTTI was residing. This is a big surprise to me because I didn't know his father came to the US and I didn't know he went to WV. I was told that my great grandfather Michele passed away in Italy but now I'm not sure what's up! I must have relatives there - anyone related to the ANGOTTI name, please contact me!!
Thanks!
Debbie

Looking for Family of William Reynolds

Hoping to locate family members or other researchers with a connection to my REYNOLDS family, originally from MA.

Seeking information about William REYNOLDS and his family from Mannington, Marion County, W.VA.

William (b abt 1912) was brother to Arthur Charles REYNOLDS Jr.; they were sons of Arthur Charles Sr.(b Jun 1889 Cheshire, Berkshire County, MA) and unknown.

Parents of Arthur Sr. & Eva E. REYNOLDS GARDNER DECKER (b Sep 1885 in Cheshire) were Alvin J. REYNOLDS and Hannah (Anna) VAN VALKENBURG from MA & NY. Eva was my G grandmother.

Information from distant cousins indicate that William & Arthur Jr. grew up in separate locations; neither of them knowing of the other's existance until just a few yrs. before Arthur died. Mother apparently died when they were very young; Arthur Sr. was a career military man and couldn't take care of both boys. How William ended up in W. VA is unknown.

William married Mae (?) and had 8 known children but family members could only remember 4 names: Winnifred, Rebecca, William Jr. and David.

Would very much like to exchange family information and old photos with direct descendants of this family. Please help me to locate this family - there are lots of distant cousins out here looking for them!

Kem Hart
Portsmouth, VA
ptownpest@aol.com
Looking to confirm info on Abraham Lee Hinkle (Jonas B., Abraham, Jonas) and wife Della or Eveline Hinkle (Adrew Jackson, Abijah, Jonas). According to the 1900 Fed. Census for W.Va. , Upshur, Washington District he was born in 1958 and Della in 1862. Have found a joint venture family tree sources on Ancestry.com that trace these individuals back 3 generations to the same ancestors: Jonas Hinkle 1781-1857 and Catherine Elizabeth Cooper 1777-1854. Is this a case of too many people entering unsourced info or do they truly share bloodlines through Abraham Hinkle 1811-1881 and Abijah Hinkle 1802-1876? I have not found a definitive maiden name for Eveline if Hinkle is her married name.
Mr. Tucker, I respect your privacy wishes but if you could help me straighen this out I would appreciate it very much!
Thanks for your time everyone!

I would very much appreciate if someone could check for a death announcement or obituary that might list family of Fred Snider JACKSON, born 1 May 1885 in Fairmont, Marion County, West Virginia and died there on 30 August 1942, and buried at Jones Cemetery.

Fred Snider JACKSON was the son of Joseph Sands JACKSON and his wife Fannie K. SNYDER. Fannie died in Fairmont on 10 April 1933 and was buried at Woodlawn Cemetery. Her husband Joseph probably died between 1900 and 1910.

Fred married Niomi Bell CLARK about 1905, but appear to have divorced before the 1930 US Census. In that census, Nioma was listed as a widowed HAYES, living in Pittsburgh, Allegheny Co. Pennsylvania with several of her children. Fred was later registered for the WWII Draft in Fairmont, but died not long after that registration. Children of the couple were:

1 - Laura Frances JACKSON, b. 20 May 1906 in Fairmont, Marion Co., WV. Shown as a 24 year-old OTTEN widow with her mother in the 1930 US Census of Pittsburgh.

2 - Jay Edward JACKSON, b. 19 Aug 1907 in Fairmont, WV, died 13 July 1969 in Pittsburgh, PA. Married Dorothy EICHHOLTZ.

3 - Robert Clark JACKSON, b. 23 Aug 1909 in Fairmont, WV d. 30 June 1910 Fairmont, WV.

4 - Thelma JACKSON, b. abt 1911 in Fairmont, WV, listed as divorced from a HAGEN in the 1930 US Census of Pittsburgh and living with her mother and daughter Betty B. HAGEN.

5 - Harriett Amanda JACKSON, b. abt. 1913 in Washington Co. PA

6 - May JACKSON, b. abt. 1915 in Washington Co. PA

7 - Charles R. JACKSON, b. abt. 1917 in Washington Co. PA

8 - Kennet JACKSON, b. abt 1917 in Washington Co. PA, possibly twin sister of Charles R. JACKSON

9 - Glen S. JACKSON, b. abt. 1919 in Washington Co. PA, was adopted as Glen S. WRIGHT. This is the branch of the family that is trying to reconnect with their living relatives.

So far, I haven't had much luck in trying to trace out Fred's children. I was hoping that there might have been an obituary printed locally that might have mentioned the whereabouts of some of his children in 1942, particularly the possible married names of his daughters. I've placed some census transcripts below. Specifically, I am looking for journals, diaries and letters from that era (1900-1910). But anything at all, for that matter, will suffice. No detail is too small to include. Thanks.

PHOTO FOUND - Asa Tennant

 Hi Everyone,
Just wanted to let everyone know about a photo I found today. The photo was in an old small album of tin type photos. It was the only one in the album that was named. The photo was of a man that appeared to be in his 30's and was labeled "Asa Tennant". There was another photo of the same man with a woman of about the same age.
I am a member of several MyFamily.com sites, and I was sure I recognized the name from somewhere. I have looked around some and can't find the name anywhere on my sites. I thought I would post this to a few sites in hopes it will help someone find some old family photos.
If anyone has a connection to Asa Tennant and are interested in the photos, let me know. The album and photos are in an antique mall near Fairmont WV. The price was $59.00 for the album. If anyone wants the store location and info, just let me know.
Jeff Smith

Jacob Mundell death date?? Please help

I am researching the Mundell line and have followed it to Marion County. Jacob Mundell was born June 20, 1818 in Coalfax, Marion Co, WV. The death date that I have found (from other researchers) is September 22, 1854. I was wondering if anyone had a way to look this up for me please to confirm the date.

My gg grandfather, Leonidas was born to Jacob and Matilda Brown Mundell on December 18, 1860. That is my problem. Lee's birth date is 6 years after his fathers "supposed" death date. I would like to confirm this. He may have been born out of wedlock after his father's death.

I hope someone here can help.
I have been looking for her death certificate but have been unlucky so far.
Her name was Eliza (Elizabeth) Samantha Barnett Boice. She married Samuel Moore Boice
in 1888. She died on Feb 14 1913, I thought in Braxton county which was where she
lived and her tombstone is located. So now I am trying the surrounding counties to find
where and how she died. Does anyone have access to death records of this county that could do a quick lookup for me?
Thanks so much,
Mark

Looking for George Barb's grave

I am trying to locate the graves of my great-grandparents, George Clarence Barb (b. 1874, d. c.1946) and his wife Elizabeth Calypso Jackson Barb (b. 1878, d. c.1916). I am 99% sure they are buried in Marion County, but since I live in Tennessee I do not have access to cemetery records there. If anyone knows where they are buried (or can check cemetery records) and let me know, I would really appreciate it :-)

Thanks,
John

I want to get in touch with my cousin, Mrs. Margaret Giordano of Fairmont, WV, whom I've never talked to before. Her grandfather, Forrest Delaney, was the brother of my grandfather, Lloyd Delaney. Needless to say, this is all genealogy related.

I have several phone books but evidently all the Giordano's in Fairmont have unlisted numbers!

Could someone help me with her phone number or contact her to let her know that I wish to talk to her?

Thanks so much...

Jeanne Delaney

I'm trying to find the birth date and parents of Samuel S. DAVIS.

According to census records, he was born about 1830 in Virginia and was working as a blacksmith in 1860-1870-1880 in Marion County. He married Martha Ann DAWSON in Monongalia County on 5 or 11 May 1855. Children: Emma L. Davis SWISHER, Rosanna or Rosella, Clara Davis SHROUT, Abigail Myrtle Davis KIGER, Carmel and Claud.

He served in the Civil War in Co. L in the 5th or 6th WV Cavalry. He's buried (as S.S. Davis) in Meadowdale Cemetery, but no dates are given on his tombstone.

I'd be grateful for any info about his date of birth and possible ancestors.

K Grant

We are seeking the help of relatives who may be able to identify photographs that once belonged to Martha Jane (Hoult) Toothman (1850-1931) who was the wife of Thornton Jacob Toothman and the daughter of John Cunningham Hoult and his first wife Susanna Bare. Martha was raised by her paternal grandparents, John B. Hoult and Elizabeth (Cunningham) Hoult, who are pictured in her collection. In addition to the Hoults, some photos in the collection may represent Martha’s husband’s family, Thronton was the son of Charles Toothman & Mahala (Arnett) Toothman.

The identified photos can be seen online at www.greeneconnections.com in the Photo Archives Index under Hoult and Toothman, each family has an album. While there please be sure to click on the Unidentified link in each album to view the unidentified photos to see if you recognize anyone or if you have any photos that could be compared.

We are very interested in hearing from anyone who could help. Contact information is on the web site with the photos. If you have photos you would like to add to the project those are most welcome too.

The photos currently posted belong to Toothman descendants residing in Greene County, Pennsylvania.

Thank you for any help!

I have information that my great-grandfather Dickerson Fleming Wood was buried in 1891 in a family cemetery. I have the following location for this cemetery & would like to go find it, but I need more specific directions. Please help if you can. (3 1/4 mi. north US 19 on Dunkard Mill Run. JW Hughes farm (read by WPA on 8-3-1938)) A cousin said it was the Hugus farm, but perhaps her memory is failing. Someone else told me that they think it is now on Consolidated Coal Company land.

I am looking for information on Jesse TALKINGTON. His wife's name was Mary. Their children were:(Abraham, Alexander, John, Jacob,Mary and Hannah TALKINGTON) I know that Abraham TALKINGTON married Elizabeth Hartley on Oct. 9, 1828. Also Alexander TALKINGTON was granted land on Mochans Run in Monongalia County (now Marion co.WV) on Nov.30, 1838. I would like to know when and where Jesse TALKINGTON was born, also when he died and anything about his siblings. Any information on other TALKINGTONS in Marion, Harrison, Monongalia or Wetzel counties would also be appreciated.
Cemetery locations for Ballah Cem and David Youst Cem

Hi:

I am looking for the location of the Ballah Cemetery, Grant Town and for the David Youst Cemetery in Fairview. I have tried using epodunk website but neither of them is listed. I am assuming that the David Youst Cemetery is a family cemetery since David Youst is buried there along with his wife Rebecca.

Also, I have other family names that I am trying to identify where they may be buried. Do you know if your library has information on burial sites?

Thanks...Mary Jo

His death certificate lists him as a coal miner. Hank A. LLOYD was the Coroner and R.L. CUNNINGHAM was the undertaker. Is the undertaker's family still in business? Are there coroner's records available for the county? Any assistance with this would be greatly appreciated.

Frieda Patrick Davison

POW/MIA Korean War, Marion Co. HAMRICK
I am searching for the family of a soldier who was killed in the Korea War. When he entered service he gave Marion County, West Virginia as his home of record. His remains were never recovered.

Soldier: HAYWARD HAMRICK
Born: Sept. 17, 1928, Caucasian
Date of loss: Sept. 3, 1950, MIA

When the Korean War ended the enemy never returned or accounted for over 8,000 of our servicemen. They died in their hands. That was over 50 years ago. Since that time DNA has been perfected and also they are recovering remains in North Korea. Our government is obligated to return those remains to the proper family. DNA samples have been obtained from most of the families of these missing soldiers. For various reasons some families have not been located. There are 54 families in West Virginia that have not been located. There is one family from Marion County that has not been located.

When the remains are recovered and identified they will be returned to the family for proper burial. I am just an old (76 years) Combat Veteran out of the Korean War and thankful that I did return. I consider this a very noble cause and I hope that you can help in some way to find this family. For more information on the project you may go to http://www.jpac.pacom.mil/. My part in the program is to match up the lost families with the proper agency.

I will be grateful for any assistance in locating this family.

Harold Davis
40th Infantry Division
Korea ’52-‘53
910-791-2333
hgdavis@bellsouth.net
