Hello,
Can anyone help me with a lookup for survey plats and/or cemetery inscriptions from Jefferson County? I am looking for the surname Coates (Coats). James and Elizabeth Coates and several sons and their families lived in Harper's Ferry / Bolivar from about 1820 though the 1870s or 1880s. I am new to this message board and would appreciate any suggestions on research in this area. Thank you for your ideas.
Sincerely,
Pat Coates Deoring

Barbara, I do not know the exact connection, but I live in the Maddox house in Shepherdstown, WV and will try to see what I can find. The house was built in 1928 and was lived in by Henry Maddox and his wife, the daughter of the builder until she died in the early 1990s. There are a couple of daughters living in the area and there is a genealogical effort going on in town that I can tap into. I will see what I can find. Glenn
Does anybody know anything about a John F. Price m Eliza Baker Cowdrey. In the 1830 and 1840 census there is a John F. Price in Harper's Ferry. Eliza Baker was from Winchester, VA. so maybe this is the same family. If anybody has any information on John F. or suggestions on where to look. I'd love to have it. I had the family bible which gave me his children's names (I gave it to UVA in Charlottsville) but I know nothing, nada, about John F. Price who would have been my great great great grandfather. and those 2 dates is all I have. thanks Carolyn at Mooloolaba@aol.com

It is described as being located at "Dust Crossing".

Does anyone know where "Dust Crossing" is located? It does not come up with a search of GNIS, and a web search yields only information related to persons buried in the Melvin Cemetery, but does not give the location.

I believe it is likely to be located near the unincorporated of Reedson, and perhaps just south of Uvilla, but that's guess work.

Thanks

Bill

My brother and I are doing research on Baker Tapscott, who died in or around Shepherdstown, WV in May of 1838. I recently was in Shepherdstown and in doing some research on line have found that all the existing cemeteries in or around Shepherdstown post-date Baker's burial. John Blackford, owner of Ferry Hill across the Potomac from Sherpherdstown put in his diary "Baker Tapscott was buried today", the entry being May 18, 1838. Assuming he was buried in or around Shepherdstown, does anyone know of any cemeteries in that area, or just across the Potomac in Maryland, that pre-date 1838?

I am looking for any information on the Levicks in Jefferson County. Rachael Levick was the daughter of caleb levick (I think) and married in 1817 to a Alexander Byers/Syerz. Rachael's father may have been Caleb Levick. I think Rachael may have actually married Alexander Dewar and the writing was not readable. My reason for this is there are no other marriages between an Alexander and Rachael in either Virginia or the surrounding states for that period and there are no Alexnader Byers or Syerz in any future census. Does anyone have any family history on the Levicks which might help? Thanks very much. Marilee Cunningham

Transcription of Obituary
From undated and unidentified newspaper

A pioneer for the Shepherd College physical education department died Oct. 28 at her Church Street Home.

Dr. Sara Cree was 97.

She led Shepherd's physical education program from 1940 until she retired in 1972 and began the woman's athletic program at the college.

Cree graduated from West Virginia University with a bachelor of arts degree in 1930, and later earned her master of science degree there. She completed her doctor of education degree at Pennsylvania State University in 1954.

The Shepherd University (then Shepherd College) physical education building was renamed in her honor in 1975.

Cree was born Jan,. 11, 1907, at Oak Grove Park in Carmichael, Pa. Her family raised cattle in that section of Greene County for many years, and Cree still owned the farm through the early 1990s.

Her dying wish was to return to the farm, according to Cree's caretaker Rosa Lee Shanton, who spoke about the longtime educator during a brief interview recently. Shanton helped Cree make the long, final journey home.

"The weekend before she died she kept saying she wanted to go back, "Shanton said. "It was such a joy to see the light in her eyes. Once she saw that farm, she was ready to go to her heavenly home."

Cree was a leader for the local chapter of the American Association of University Women and the Alpha Sigma Tau and Delta Kappa Sororities.

She is survived by her nephew Fred Schroyer of Waynesburg, Pa., and two cousins.

She was preceded in death by her two sisters Mary Ruth and Pauline.

A memorial service for Cree was held Nov. 9 at Trinity Episcopal Church. She donated her body to West Virginia University. Her remains will ultimately be returned to her home of Greene County.
They lived on a farm near Kabletown, West Virginia or Charlestown, West Virginia. The 1930 U.S. Federal Census show that they were Negro for the race, but I believe that is wrong.
Does anyone have any information on Rachael Levick who was married to an Alexander Byers/Syerz in Jefferson County in 1813-1817. I think she was from Shepherdstown. I am interested because my ancestor is Alexander Dewar, who was married to a Rachael about the same time. I have not been able to find any info on Alexander Byers/Syerz in census, etc., so wonder if Alexander's name is transcribed incorrectly and it should be Dewar. They are the only Alexander and rachael in Virginia, WV, and MD during that time period. They lived in Loudon County for the 1820/1830 census and then moved to Muskingum County, OH. Thanks for any info!

George W. Shaner was born in Jefferson County, Va., June 10, 1820 and was the second of a family of four children born to John and Cassandra (Kidwell) Shaner; his ancestry on his father's side was from Germany; on his mother's side from England; his grandfather was a soldier of the Revolution, and his father of the war of 1812. The parents of George W. Shaner lived in Virginia until their death, and with them our subject remained until he reached manhood; he learned the trade of carpentry, at which he worked for fifteen years, and, never having an opportunity to attend school, is wholly self-educated. On coming West, he went to La Porte County, Ind., in 1849.
does anyone have info on this family?

MILLER, THORNBURG, SHEPHERD IN SHEPHERDSTOWN

I am looking for information about George Miller and his wife Prudence Thornburg. Prudence was b 1789 and was the daughter of Thomas and Prudence Bentley Collins Thornburg.

I believe that George and Prudence Miller may be my gggg grandparents. I have a copy of a letter Prudence sent to her son, Joseph C. Miller in April 1829 from Shepherdstown that his father had died. It does not say when Joseph's father died, but was probably within a few weeks of the letter that Prudence wrote.

There is a George Miller mentioned in the elections of trustees of Shepherdstown in several years beginning in 1809 according to the book "History of Shepherdstown 1730-1911" and I am guessing that this is the same George Miller who was married to Prudence Thornburg.

Prudence Miller's son, Joseph C. married Susan Jane Lemley, daughter of John and Susannah (Tay) Lemley she was born in New town or Stephens town VA. Joseph and Susan and her parents moved first to Marion County, MO and then settled in Shelbyville, Shelby, MO. After the death of her husband Prudence moved to Marion County, MO and is listed with her daughter and son-in-law James K. White in the 1840 census. Prudence died in 1844 and is buried in Marion County.

QUESTIONS:
- who were George Miller's parents
- are there any birth records for Shepherdstown for 1805 and the years prior to and after -- Joseph C. Miller was born in 1805 -
- are there marriage records for Prudence Thornburg and Geoge Miller and their daughter (I think) who married James K. White. I do not know where James K. White was born other than Virginia and what Prudence's daughter's name was.

- Prudence moved to MO sometime before 1840 - she is listed on the 1830 census as head of household in Shepherdstown with 2 males ages 5-10, 1 male 15-20 and 1 male 20=30 and females 1 10-15, 1 15-20, 1 20=30 and 1 40-50. If this is Prudence Thornburg Miller, she would have been about 41 years old at the time of the 1830 census so would have been the older female.

I would appreciate any information about George and Prudence Thornburg Miller. and also Prudence Miller's daughter who married James K. White in VA.

Keyes, North, Cruzen - Millard Stipes, 1914

Does anyone have an original copy of the above book? The full title is "Genealogy and History of the related Keyes, North, and Cruzen Families with a sketch of the Early Norths of England". I'm trying to locate/document family "margin notes" from the original generation and descendants who received the book and may have added Birth/marriage/death or other family data as the book was passed down through the generations.

Original books located to date have green cover and a publication date of 1914. Millard published the book himself in Jamesport, MO

Also - does anyone know the total number of copies Millard published?

If you are unfamiliar with the book...It is available at no cost in the Brigham Young Library digital collection at:

http://www.lib.byu.edu/fhc/

My family line is through John Daniel Stipes - Page 293 in Millard's book. He and family moved from Harpers Ferry, WV to Slater, MO about 1875) Also searching any Connection with Stipes or Stipe of Harpers Ferry, WV or Missouri.

Thanks for any help or information.
I am looking for parents of Isaiah Bird, born abt 1823-1824, died abt 1870-1874, married 6/28/1856 to Hannah Myers Bird in Washington Co, MD.

Census records indicate following for Isaiah:
> 1850 - Washington Co MD, same record shows Elizabeth Bird, possibly mother. She was born abt 1791 in MD, died before 1880, married abt 1811-1821. Record indicates he was born in Virginia.

> 1860 - Jefferson Co, WV, says Isaiah born in MD.

> 1870 - Washington Co. MD, says Isaiah born in West Virginia.

I cannot find a death record for Isaiah, or marriage and death record for Elizabeth. Given Isaiah moved back and forth between Jefferson Co WV and Washington Co MD, I have a feeling his roots may be in WV.
Shimp Family buried at Brucetown, VIrginia

I have located the following members of the Shimp Family. They are all buried in the Brucetown Methodist Church Cemetery located in Frederick County, Virginia. However, a large number of people that are buried the Brucetown cemetery didn't reside in Frederick County. So these folks may have lived in Berkeley or Jefferson Counties in West Virginia or Clarke County in Virginia.

Jacob Shimp (Born: June 21, 1816 – Died: March 13, 1863). His wife is Susan A. (Born: c 1817 - Died: June 9, 1900)she is listed as age 83 yrs. Also it apears that they had a daughter Sarah E. (Born: August 03, 1845 – Died: September 11, 1870).

Also buried at Brucetown, VA. is the wife of a David H. Shimp she is listed as Ann R. (Born January 01, 1838 - Died January 16, 1876). There is a William J. Shimp the son of D.H. & A.R. Shimp William was born on March 20, 1863 and died on July 12, 1877.

Other Shimps buried at Brucetown include George W. Shimp born on November 24, 1825 and died on July 22, 1869. His wife is listed as Juliet A. Shimp and she died on February 25, 1917. There's also a Harriet Shimp, she died on March 13, 1901 and a Mary Shimp no information listed on the grave stone.

Can anyone help me connect these folks with other Shimps from this Virginia and West Virginia region? Any help would be most appreciated.

I am looking for any information anyone has about the house/estate/farm called "Roxton" on Leetown road in Summit Point. It sits right beside the Summit Spring Farm. I am looking for the owners name, or any history on the house/farm/etc. The house currently sits in sad disrepair, or so it seems as the overgrowth from the road obscures all but a tiny bit. My wife and I were recently in the area and she really liked what she could she of the house/property from the road. The only thing I have been able to reference to "Roxton" is the Throckmorton family from the late 1700's, but nothing more. Anything that could help point me in the right direction would help.

John M. Coyle, the son of James T. and Elizabeth (Howard) Coyle, was born in Jefferson County, Virginia, in 1804. John M. Coyle was married twice, first in 1835 to Julia E. Bannon, who died in 1840 at the age of thirty-one years. He next married Albina S. Crow, in August of 1856. Albina S. Crow was the daughter of William and Mary (McCartney) Crow. The marriages didn’t produce any children. John M. Coyle was raised on a farm. In 1836 he became engaged in the woolen business and operated quite an extensive woolen factory at Brucetown until 1849. After selling the Woolen factory to William Jobe, he purchased a farm in Frederick County, Virginia, which he later sold in 1852. John Coyle later moved to Jefferson County, Virginia and settled in Charlestown. Shortly before the Civil War, he was a contractor and builder for the United States government, and was engaged in construction at Harper’s Ferry at the time of John Brown’s Raid. He later became one of the grand jurors that indicted John Brown and his followers.

John M. Coyle’s grandfather came to America with his two brothers from Ireland at a very early date. His grandfather’s brothers settled in Pennsylvania, while his grandfather moved to Virginia, where he remained during his lifetime. He and wife died leaving two sons, one settled in Ohio and it is not known what became of him.

Would anyone have any further information on John M. Coyle?

Also looking for information on a Joseph Coyle that married Maria Jobe of Berkeley County, Va.

Jefferson Co., Virginia County Clerk

I recently received information that Robert White of Scotland settled in Jefferson Co., Virginia in the mid to late 1700's. Robert removed to Tennessee ca 1815 with two of his sons. I understand Robert had a brother who was the Court Clerk in Jefferson Co., Virgina during the same timeframe that Robert White lived there. The brother apparently stayed in Jefferson Co. until his death. Does anyone have any information on this White.

If someone was to go to Jefferson COunty today to do research on this surname, from the early 1800's, what would be the best route to go? I'm new at this genealogy thing and wouldn't know where to start.
