Lawrence Lane, my 3Xs Ggrandfather came, in 1808, from PA and "...built the first cabin where Ravenswood now stands". Mary Anderson, moved to Wood Co. I have heard there are descendants of Isaac, Henry and David in the Parkersburg area. I would love to hear from any of the Lane descendants and share stories & photos...especially photos...I have much info of Jacob Lane's descendants and some limited info about the others, that I will gladly share.

Some surnames from John Lane: CURRY & WEAVER; from Jacob Lane: DAUGHERTY/DOUGHERTY, BUFFINGTON, PARSONS, OURS, LOVETT, BIGLEY, LEMLEY, MORRISON, GILLILAN/GILLILAND, RAWLING, McKENZIE, LOFLINK, CUSTER/CUSTAR, GODDARD, WHITE, LAWRENCE, CAMPBELL. from William Lane: SEELY/SEELEY/SEELYE, BLIZZARD, HAAS; from Isaac Lane: RICE , CLARK, PRATT, CARMICHAEL, CASTO, MATHENY, ABLES, SNYDER, HUGHES, PATTERSON, MCCRACKEN, STEELE; from Henry Lane: RICE, STANLEY, KENNERY, CROUT, BEAVER, GRANT, DUFFY, RANKIN, RARDON, TAYLOR, JAMEYSON,CALDWELL, BENNETT, FLOYD, BOSO; from David Lane: ANDERSON, ALLEN, WILLIAMSON, CONGROVE, FREDERICK, BADGELEY, WHEALDON, BOSO.

The Scarboroughs of Jackson Co., WV, mid to late 1800s thru the 1900s, perhaps living there still, are supposed to be related to a group of Scarboroughs who immigrated to Bucks Co., PA from London, England.

If there are any living Scarboroughs related to this group, or anyone who knows a Scarborough related to this group, their assistance is much needed in the Scarborough DNA Project. I suspect that my family came from this area but I have not been able to find any records to support my suspicions. This is where DNA testing is invaluable. I can compare my results to those of Scarboroughs who can trace their roots to this family group, and determine if I too belong to the same group.

If anyone can help break through this 4 year brick wall, I'd appreciate it.

--Joe

This sketch taken from "Pioneers of Jackson County", by John House, it appears in the section
"Lower Sandy Valley".

Dewitt Family

The first settler at Muse's Bottom was John DeWitt (some of the old settlers pronounce it Doo-it), who built the first cabin, in 1807.

Soon after, Thomas DeWitt, John Powers, Thomas Coleman, Ellis Nesselrode, and John Boso came. It is not at all certain that these parties all came the same year, but they were all among the very early pioneers.

Where the DeWitts were from is not given, but the name recurs several times in the early history of Mill creek and Sandy, and parties of the same name are still to be found in Grant District.

John Wesley Hartshorn is supposedly buried at Mcgee Chapel Cemetery in Independence, Jackson Co., WV, along with his wife, Mary Margaret Farley. He died about 1845, I thought in Monroe Co., OH. Mary Margaret Farley Hartshorn lived in OH until after 1850 when she moved to Ravenswood.

Can anyone tell me where Independence, Jackson Co, is?
Does anyone have a list of who is buried in McGee Chapel Cemetery that can tell me if John Wesley Hartshorn and his wife are there?
Ripley High: Attention Barbara and Les

Thank you so much for the help concerning Ripley High and yearbooks. Les: In no way did I consider you old enough to be personally familiar with the second-floor high! Barbara: I'm embarrassed that I didn't think to check Wikipedia for information. It's not as if I've never used it. I have done so many times. I wonder who provided Wikipedia with the article.

My aunt, Alda Givens, 20, married Robert Ong, 34, on April 27, 1919. Alda was one of the elementary teachers in Ripley, and Bob was a plumber. I think they had known each other less than a year because, if I remember correctly, she had been teaching in her home county, Pleasants, during the 1917-1918 school term. Like her brother Merton, she started teaching very young. Mert graduated from the eighth grade in the spring of 1919 and by fall had moved to Ripley to attend high school. At the end of his sophomore year, he took the state teacher's exam, passed it, and by the fall of 1921 was teaching in Tyler County. Bob was killed in an accident in November, 1922. I believe that the fall of 1922 was the time Alda's younger sister Onalee became a student at Ripley. Onalee left in the spring of 1925 and became a senior at St. Marys High in the fall. Apparently, Alda left about the same time, and I didn't know where she was until I found her in Oklahoma in the 1930 Census. She was married to Homer Laidley from Pleasants County who was twice widowed and the father of several children. Eventually the family moved to Shepherd, MI, where Alda taught in the local high school until her retirement. Too much information? All of us genealogy addicts are guilty of communicating everything we know about a subject. Any chance of locating some pictures of the old elementary school which also housed the high school? You can write to me at my e-mail address: rgivens@ma.rr.com. Thank you for your patience. Joan

Ripley yearbooks--again!!

Les: Yesterday I was reading some of the letters that the Marion County teachers wrote for my father's retirement booklet when I found a letter with some information about Ripley High School in 1919/1920 and 1920/1921--the years Merton was a freshman and sophomore. At that time the High School was located on the second floor of the Elementary School!! The letter was written by a teacher who met my father when she was in the fourth grade in Ripley. Years later she came to Fairmont to attend the Normal School. In the course of time, she became a teacher too and remembered he boy who wore knickers to school and left Ripley early to start his teaching career at the age of fifteen and a half. He progressed from one-room schools in Tyler and Pleasants Counties to Assistant Superintendent of Schools in Marion. When he retired in 1973, he was honored by recognition of his services to the profession and by a retirement booklet that all his family members treasure. I've finally come to the conclusion that if Ripley High was small enough to hold classes on the second floor of the Elementary School, it was too small for a yearbook. Perhaps class pictures were taken or the whole student body was photographed in a group picture. Les, my apologies for turning this into a blog. Anyone know the story of how the second-floor high school became a full-fledged institution? Joan

I have been researching James Haynes born abt 1821 and died abt 1895. I know that it 1882 he married Elizabeth Dornan Anderson and had 2 children with her, Leola and Joseph. The problem is I can not find any record of him before 1882, who his parents are, if he was married before and so on. I saw on the marriage record to Elizabeth that it said he was born in Kanawha but that is all. If anyone has any information it would be greatly appriciated, Thankyou
Megan.

BOREM post-1900 marriage

I was wondering if anyone has any listings for a Neely BOREM, BORHAM, etc. marriage for Jackson Co. My husband's line has listed for 1900 a Neely BOREM listed as living with him and his family. Her relationship to the head of house is listed as step-father. No one I've talked to in the familly knows anything of this child. If she was indeed a step-daughter, her mother's name would have been Minnie SMITH CHEVALIER and the step-father's name would be Charles CHEVALIER. This child was listed as born 1883 and I can only find her on the 1900 Census. After that she disappears. Thanks in advance.

Could anyone please tell me the name of an old cemetery on the hill between Gilmore Grade School and the main grouping of homes in New Era? Does a listing of burials exist? Is there a lane into it or should you ask to cut across any private property? And last, is it overgrown or hidden to where you'd need to take some trimming gear in with you? I'm looking for Henry and Theresa Hardesty and Mr. and Mrs. Joe Hunter. Thanks, Jim Fletcher

Looking for Lawrence Lane Descendants in Jackson Co.

I am wondering if there are any descendants of the Lawrence Lane family left in Jackson Co. I am descended from his son Jacob Lane,b. 1802, m. Mary Daugherty. The raised their six children in Jackson Co. To my knowledge their descendants left Jackson for Meigs Co., Ohio, but other sons of Lawrence Lane, Isaac Lane, b. 1804, m. Sarah Rice; and Henry Lane,b. 1808, m. Edith Rice (daughters of Shadrack Rice & Mary Boice)stayed in and around Jackson and perhaps Wood Co. WVa. The old folks are all gone, and there is no one left of whom I can ask questions. I am hoping there is someone on this site who may have knowledge of descendants of Lawrence Lane (who built the first cabin in Ravenswood) still living in Jackson. I am most anxious to share info and photos.

Ripley yearbooks

Les: This is an update of a message I posted on March 15. I'm still looking for Ripley High yearbooks, but I've been able to pinpoint the exact years concerning my father's attendance. His name was Merton Givens, and his oldest sister, Alda Givens Ong (wife of Robert Ong), was a teacher. She may have taught in the grade school. Merton was a freshman in 1919/1920 and a sophomore in 1920/1921, After his sophomore year, he took the State Teacher's Exam and left Ripley to teach in Tyler and Pleasants Counties for a couple of years before he completed his high school education at St. Marys High. A younger sister, Onalee, attended Ripley until her senior year when she, too, finished her high school education at St. Marys. It doesn't matter that individual students weren't identified in the group pictures. I believe that I can identify them!! I would appreciate any help that you or anyone else can give me. My e-mail address is rgivens@ma.rr.com. Joan Givens, Fairmont, WV

I have just started on this branch of the Durst family, my direct line is of the Som.Co.,Pa. & Garrett Co.,Md. area but I would like to add more on Henry C.Durst's family and as I was researching realized that a large branch of the Durst are in the Jackson Co.
Fairview Road, Church and Cemetery, Baier and Kinzel families

I would like to know what the old church name is that has the Baier and Kinzel families buried there. The sign on the church is so worn and I couldn't make the name out. It may be on Dutch Ridge? It wasn't far from Antioch Church, although it was on an entirely different road. I found 3 death certificates for the Baier family members. Lizzy Baier, died 28 Mar 1952, born 16 Sept. 1875. Parents are Cozart Sayre and Elonza Stewart. Cecil Baier gave the information. Her address was Rural Route Cottageville. Margaret L. Baier died 26 Jan 1944 and was born 26 Apr 1851 in Baier Co., PA. Her mother was Kathrine Hartzel and father Jacob Baier who was born in Germany. C. W. Baier of Cottageville gave the information. Eugene A. Baier died from a "shot with shot gun" according to the death certificate. The date of his death was 26 Mar 1937. He was 37 and born 5 Aug 1905. His mother was Lizzie Stewart and father Levia Baier. I believe it said that his wife was Lexie Baier? Your help would be appreciated on confirming the name of the church. Many Thanks.

I'm looking for information that might be found in copies of the Ripley High School Yearbooks that were published in 1918, 1919, 1920, 1921, 1922, 1923, 1924, 1925, 1926, 1927, 1928, 1929, 1930. My aunt, Alda Givens Ong (wife of Robert), taught there sometime during the late teens and the twenties of the 1900s. My father, Merton Vinson Givens, attended the High School before the fall of 1923. Their sister, Leila Onalee Givens, was a student sometime after the spring of 1924. I would appreciate very much someone's looking through these books, if they still exist, and letting me know if any pictures or information is available about my family. My e-mail address is rgivens@ma.rr.com. Thank you. Joan Givens in Fairmont, WV

I am searching for information on the Slaughter, Schul, Avery families in Jackson County, WV. I am descended from Abraham and Delilah Slaughter, through their son John M. Slaughter who married Mary Ann Avery in Jackson County in 1859. One of their daughters was Louella Slaughter who married Fredrick Casper Schul. They moved to Kingman, Kansas, in about 1880 and settled in that part of the state.
Any information on any of these families would be appreciated. I am trying to find out if the Schul family was also from Jackson Cty.
Hello,

I was looking at the cemetary link from CastoConnections and recognized the name Bonnett. My grandmother and uncle would disagree about the spelling. Golda, my grandmother, would say Bonet and Uncle Robert, her son, would say Bonnett.

Oh what fun it is to find these little links. I have just begun but thank you all so very much for all your wonderful research. I miss looking through the old trunks that were lost when I was a teen. So many pictures, civil war relics, dresses, china, etc. Perhaps, somewhere there are photos of my grandmother and her folks.

I remember my great-grandmother, don't know her name, died in the flu pandemic in 1918.

I can see this could become an addiction for me. :o) But I must work and clean, etc. Durn!! :o) :o) Later...

Peg

Has anyone been to the Curry cemetery just east of Meadowdale and west of Duncan,WV, on Sandyville-Liverpool Road? We were in Jackson County this past weekend and we found the Meadowdale cemetery, but not the Curry cemetery. When we got home,we saw that we were too far east of Meadowdale for the Curry cemetery. Does anyone have the names of those buried in the Curry cemetery?I'd love photos if anyone has those, too! I am assuming it is no longer used for current burials.
Any help is appreciated!!!

John Furget and his wife 'Mary' both born in BAV settled on their farm, either on Cow Run, WV. or very close to it, on the county line of Jackson an Mason. When did they arrive in this country?

Sarha Margret(Furget) their daughter, married Peter Pierce Sayre. .....
I have to think these family member are buried at Antioch, but no proof. Help Please if you know??
In the L D S 1880 census place, I found what I hope are the children of John and Mary Furget.

Listed are, John, Margret, Fredic, Jacob all said to have been born in BVA. (I hope that stands for Bavaria)
(Margret, would be my Great Grandmother, as she mar: Peter P. Sayre)
OK, here's the real question. Anyone with the Cow Run History have any information on what happened to the Furget Family? Is there anyone on this list that tie's in with the Furget family? What happened to them?
Or did they all die without issue? (other than Margret) Surly there are some cousins out there with the Furget name from Jackson Co, or Mason, right on the county line very close to Cow Run.???
Thank You in advance for any help or information so that I might sort of, finish this line out.
in faith,........ms. grace

Louise was 18 at time of marriage, so this was probably her 1st marriage. John was 46 when he married Louise. What happened to Ida? Did she die? Ida was born in 1886. Who were Ida's parents? Where is she buried? Thanks.

DAVIS, PORTER, DEWEESE, JOHNSON

I am seeking information on John DAVIS and his wife Ann Nancy PORTER. I have no dates verified on John, but I believe he died (probably in Mason or Jackson Co.,) withing the 11 months prior to the taking of the 1850 census in Jackson Co. Ann Nancy PORTER was born 1825 in OH, the d/o Nicholas PORTER and Elizabeth (GOODLIN). She and John had 2 children, James W. DAVIS b. Feb 1848 in Mason Co., and William H. DAVIS b. 1850 in Mason/Jackson Co. Ann was listed with her children in the 1850 census in the home of her parents in Jackson Co., WV, but her husband was not there. Further research let me know that she had been widowed and that she remarried to a Samuel DEWEESE on 17 Mar 1853 in Jackson Co., and that she too died in 1857 in Jackson Co., leaving behind her boys at ages abt 9 & 7 respectively. I would also like to learn if she had any children with her second husband. James was later married to Mary R. JOHNSON, d/o William J. and Ann JOHNSON, on 16 Dec 1869 in Jackson Co. and then they moved to Ritchie Co., abt 1876-1878.

My problem is that I cant find anything else for sure on John DAVIS other than he died abt 1850. And then that his wife died also only 7 years later. I really want to find out who raised these children, who John's parents were, and what happened to the younger boy William H. I descend through James W. DAVIS and have his family pretty well, but farther back it all dead ends for me. Would love to connect with someone who has more info. And I thank you all in advance.
