The following event took place in mid or early 1830 along the Little Kanawha River in Jackson or Wood County. Looking for possible relatives of MATHIAS GEYHART YOUNG b. 1788, and his
wife SARAH (HICKMAN) YOUNG b. 1790. MATHIAS is the son of GEORGE (JUNG)
YOUNG and CATHERINE (SHIMER) YOUNG. SARAH is the daughter of JOHN HICKMAN
and NANCY (WLLACE ) HICKMAN. MATHIAS grew up on his father's plantation
located a few miles out of Staunton, VA. After his marriage, he settled on
400 acres of land in Greenbrier County, WV in the Meadow Bluff District on
the Sewell River. The HICKMANS also lived in the Meadow Bluff District.
MATHIAS and SARAH had thirteen children, JOHN HICKMAN YOUNG, GEORGE, HUGH
PETER, WILLIAM, ROBERT BASIAL, MARY ANN, THOMPSON MATHIAS and HENRY LANIS.
Four of the remaining dughters could possibly be ROSELLA, NANCY and
ELIZABETH. In 1833 Mathias decided to take a trip to Missouri with his
family. On the way, while in Wirt County, WV, Sarah died after giving birth
to HENRY LANIS. She was buried somewhere along the Little Kanawha River.
Mathias stayed in Wirt County until his infant son grew old enough to
travel. Some of his unaccounted-for daughters may have married while there.
In the last part of 1830, he retuned and settled in the Union District of
Kanawha County and lived there until his death in 1845.
