Bennett - marriage records

I found a will in Culpeper Co., VA of a Thomas Bennett dated 1793. He names sons William and John. William married Martha "Patty" Carder and moved to Harrison Co., around 1796. John may have married a "Caty" Carder in 1800 and also moved to Harrison Co after 1804. There is a John on the 1810 Census with a wife and 4 children that would "fit". What I need to know if there are any marriage records between 1810 and 1812 for this John Bennett. He may have married a Eleanor or Nelly. Or can someone tell me if Nelly is Caty Carder. I will glad to chare with anyone the will and deeds that I obtain in Culpeper Co., VA. Thanks

She was born Oct. 22, 1915 in Preston county, Wv but raised in Bridgeport, Wv, Harrison county, by Fredrick and Lizzie Ott. Married to Leonard Leslie Strother and lived on 2nd. St. in Clarksburg, Wv. I found an obituarie that stated she died in the 1960's and had a son. I would love to know what her sons name was and if he is still living or had any children. I met Maxine once when I was very young. Would love to have a picture of her or any information. If anybody out there knew Maxine or knows of anyone who did, I would really appreciate it if you would contact me. Thanks.

Hello my mother was born in Harrison County on March 2 1941. She was born Lulu Mae Curtis. Her mother had the same name born about 1903 and her fathers name was Sam Curtis born 1880. I am trying to find information on her family because she was seperated from them at the age of 4-6 she believes they were killed in a car accident but her memory is sketchy at best. She said she had brothers and a sister or 2. If you have any information on the curtis family in Harrison County could you please share it with me. I live in michigan but am traveling to Harrison County the week of July 14 2008 and especially the city of Ashton. that is on her birth certificate.
Researching Enoch Legget and Margaret Davisson families, Bartlett connection

I'm researching the families linked to Enoch Legget/Liggett and Margaret Davisson. They were married in Harrison County, Virginia on Nov. 17, 1803, before West Virginia became a state. I have no idea who Enoch Legget's parents or siblings were, I would appreciate any information on them. I think Margaret Davvison' parents were Hezekiah Davisson and Ann Pugh. I would appreciate information on these families. The surname Legget, is spelled many ways: Leggett, Liggett, Ligot.

Enoch and Margaret Legget migrated to southeast Missouri sometime in the early 1800's, but had at least one son Jesse B Leggett in 1803 in Harrison County, (West) Virginia.
Another daughter Ann Leggett may have been born in Harrison county also. It appears that Enoch Legget was a close friend of family of Bartlett.

Your help is appreciated.

McGuire-Cadogan-Quinet-Bouffioux-Clarksburg, West Virginia

My father, John Cadogan, b.1885, Steubenville, Ohio, d.1978, and Julia Quinet Bouffioux, b.1885, Belgium, d.1920, Clarksburg, were married July 14, 1919 in Clarksburg. On July 7, 1920, Julia died shortly after giving birth to a son Albert. His birth record shows his name as Albert McGuire Cadogan, though later he used the name Patrick as a middle name.

Julia parents, Leon Quinet and Juliette Hemrotin, probably still lived in Belgium, since the baby was given to the care of a Dr. John McGuire, family physician and close friend, with the support of Albert's father John.

When he was older, Albert wanted to change his name from Cadogan to McGuire. Rumor has it that he and his father argued about this, and he broke off contact with his father. We know that he took the name of McGuire, because when he graduated from the University of Notre Dame in 1943, his name was shown as Albert Patrick McGuire.

My father, John Cadogan, later married Estelle Koberlein and moved to Rochester, New York where he raised six children.

It is only recently that I learned about Albert, since my father would not talk about him to us. The only facts we know about Albert is his birth information, and the fact that he graduated from Notre Dame. From the SSI, I learned that he died February 6, 1991. I would like to know if he married, and to whom. Did he have a family. Where did he live for the rest of his life. I would appreciate any available information. Noreen Rose

I have found his name as Lurans (on a transcript from the Census Bureau dated July 8, 1971) and Lurene (when searching my grandmother on ancestry.com). He would have been married to Libby (Betsy) Springer. I believe the following to be their children: Opal A., Delina (Della) M., James, Mary I., (Lelah) Violet, and possibly Ella Parrish and Wilber F. As of the 1920 census, they were living in Harrison, West Virginia. Any help would be greatly appreciated! Thanks!

Two YOUNG families in Harrison Co VA early 1800's

1st family is
Elizabeth YOUNG d/o John b. abt 1782 Maryland. Married Edward WALBURN in 1802. She has a brother John YOUNG Jr md to Susannah HEADLEY in 1808. The Walburns move to Meigs co. OH early 1820's. Probably related to the other YOUNG family listed below as the two families are intertwined.

2nd family is Ann YOUNG b. abt 1793 Maryland. Ann md Jacob MARK in 1813. Circumstantial evidence points to her parents as William and Lucretia (Creasy) Young & to possible siblings being listed below. Wm died about 1809 in Harr. Co. and Creasy is in the census for 1810 there.
Mary YOUNG md Anderson Davis 1815 (Marks sold land to them).
Lucretia YOUNG md John Gregory Jr in 1814 (Ed Walburn affirmed marriage)mother was Lucretia (now md to Joseph Davisson)
Simon YOUNG md Nancy Romine 1826 (their son, John was living with his cousin, Simon Mark in the 1860 KY census)
other possible siblings, but with no direct proof are:
Thomas YOUNG md to Sophia Ann Moore in 1818 (No INFO on him)
William D YOUNG and Matilda Davis although, his name is Wm (maybe after Wm,who died in 1809) and he does have a daughter, Lucretia & a son, Simon. So family names are similar.

Lucretia (the mother) md Joseph Davisson in 1810 and most likely remarried after his death to Jacob Sigler in 1816.

Elizabeth & Ed Walburn moved to Meigs Co. OH, as did
Anna & Jacob Mark (their daughter md the Walburn's son)
Mary and Anderson Davis also came to Meigs Co. OH
John and Lucretia Gregory may have also come and a couple of Simon and Nancy Young's children came.
In the census, I also find a Jacob Sigler which fits the age of Lucretia Young. These families all moved into Columbia twp. providing more evidence of family ties.

Am interested in sharing info with anyone working on Youngs in Harrison Co.
thanks,
Selma

I am continuing my father's research into his family's background since he passed away. He had a line listed for the Jacob Springston Family. Wife of Jacob is a Susan stout b. abt 1802. He had one son listed named Samuel A. Springston b. 10/14/1830. Samuel married a Diatha Dykes who died in 1873. Their marriage is in 1869. There seems to be very little information on this family. I know that Samuel Springston ends up living in KS at about 1880. My father has these people as being born and dying in Harrison Co, VA. Does anyone have any information on this family?
<< Previous Next >>

Don Seabolt ~WV~ - Nov 8, 2007 View | Viewers
This information is from T. Lockard which was posted on West Virginia Web Site at myfamily.com WE need to help in keeping our state archives well and fit. WE need Fred Armstrong back at his job. WE need the cafe-tamerac REMOVED from the culture center. WE need a new governor if that is what it will take to stop him. Let it be known to all how you fel about messing up our history. How maney times have WE used to archives ? Please lets help now is the time not later. Call your senators and everyone now Thank you for your help in this. Don Seabolt.
Special Thanks to T Lockard in keeping us informed.

T. Lockard - Nov 7, 2007 View | Viewers
Categories: West Virginia ARCHIVES The following e-mail was sent to Virginia GILLESIE from Esther Warner. She also sent copies to Dawn Miller and Phil Kabler of the Charleston Gazette.

It should be circulated on ALL state web sites and printed in ALL genealogical and historical society newsletters.

Please forward it to all your genealogy buddies in your address book.

Without YOUR HELP, our WV ARCHIVES might just become a thing of the past...

++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

"Now is the time for all good men to come to the aid of their countrymen."

Dear Friends,
Please call the Governor of West Virginia today and state that you do not want to combine the search room with the Library Commission. Let him know that you do not want the Archives Search Room moved across the hall. Tell him that you don't need a cafe or a gift shop in the Cultural Center. We need the Museum put back into the basement, more money and equipment for the search room, and the Gag Orders placed on state employees removed.

It is unbelievable that State Employees are not allowed to voice a public opinion nor make any comment to the press. I thought that was what our Veterans had fought Wars over & to protect our right of Free Speech. In order to work for the State of West Virginia, Joe Manchin requires you to leave the Bill of Rights in storage, before you can work for the state.

Joe Manchin believes that we need a gift shop and a cafe in the Cultural Center. Then he will be able to have dancing in the Great Hall of the Cultural Center and then have an elegant banquet in the Cafe. This recalls the story of Queen Marie Antoinette of France. Her people were starving and crying out for bread, her answer was "Let them eat cake." Marie was missing the point. They had no bread, they had no cake.

We have something important in our Archives, we have the history of the State of West Virginia. We have the original rosters from the Civil War, we have microfilm records of births, deaths, marriages, etc. We have thousands of books on family, county, and state history. And that's just part of it.

In moving the State Archives Search Room from the location purposely designed for it by a trained architect and cramming it into the Library Commission Lending Library you are conveying the idea to me that what it contains isn't worth keeping nice. That it's o.k. to introduce food into an archival building. It isn't. The architect said so when he built it without the cafe. Food brings vermin, bugs, rats, nasty things. These eat books, they lick the ink right off the original records that are stored in the building.

Putting a lending library with a non-lending archival library? How smart is that? The books that are loaned are exposed to everything outside of the Cultural Center and returned onto the shelves: chemicals, contaminants, and etc. All mixed in with the books that we should be trying to maintain in the cleanest environment possible. Bad idea.

We lost a champion on November 1, 2007 in our Archives Director Fred Armstrong who was summarily fired as he served at the Will and Pleasure of the Governor. The Governor was no longer pleased and Fred Armstrong was no longer employed. Fred played the game that the Governor wanted. He didn't gossip about the combination of the libraries, he did his work and he did it very well. When I was called and told he had been fired, I said "Well, that makes sense. The one person I could always say was a good, hard worker, doing everything he could to make the Archives a better place. And he's fired."

Has the world gone mad?

Please call Governor Manchin today at 1-888-438-2731. Let him know we don't want the Archives Search Room moved. Today he wants to move the Archives across the hall. Tomorrow he may decide to move it to Morgantown. Or better still, sell all of it on E-bay.

Have your friends, your genealogy society, your history society, and everyone you know write a letter to Governor Manchin, 1900 Kanawha Boulevard, East, Charleston, WV 25305.

Another alternative in contacting the Governor is this web site:

http://www.wvgov.org/sec.aspx?id=36

Please take a stand on this and don't let up. We want an answer now.

The Mining Your History Foundation meets on Saturday, November 10, 2007 at the Green Room at the Cultural Center at 1 p.m. for their annual meeting. Please try to attend.
--
Joetta McCallister Kuhn
Certified Public Accountant
Vice President of Boone County Genealogical Society
Member of: Kanawha Valley Genealogical Society, Lincoln County Genealogical Society, Mining Your History Foundation, KYOWVA Genealogical Society

=======================================================
PELASE Try to attend the MYHF's annual meeting on Saturday!
James B. Gallagher - looking for death information

My great grandfather, James B. Gallagher was born Sept 1844 in NY and died 14 Oct 1902 near Benson, WV. He was buried in Weston in Lewis Co WV in Machpelah Cemetery. He was married to Helen Mar Goe. They were found in Union District in Harrison County in the 1900 Census. I am guessing that Union District is "near" Benson. The following death notice was found:

"Gallaher, James. Died near Benson last week at age 58. He was a prominent oil man, a New Yorker. Remains brought here on Thursday for interment in Machpelah cemetery. He was a brother-in-law of N.D. Goe, well known local man. (Weston Independent, Tuesday 20 Oct. 1902.)..."

Does anyone have any ideas on where to look for some record of his death whether it is a death certificate or a news item in an local Benson paper? Any help or hints are appreciated. James Gallagher is a difficult name to trace - there are so many of them!

I hope someone here can help.
I have been looking for her death certificate but have been unlucky so far.
Her name was Eliza (Elizabeth) Samantha Barnett Boice. She married Samuel Moore Boice
in 1888. She died on Feb 14 1913, I thought in Braxton county which was where she
lived and her tombstone is located. So now I am trying the surrounding counties to find
where and how she died. Does anyone have access to death records of this county that could do a quick lookup for me?
Thanks so much,
Mark

I am searching for information on Margaret Dunham. Mordecai Dunham had a son James who married ___Reed; They had a daughter Margaret who married William H. Harrison Riley (1815-1884); They had a son Mordecai Dunham Riley, born 4/18/1842 near Philippi, Barbor County. I'm told the Dunham's came from the Webster District of Taylor County which was Harrison County first. Does anyone have any data on the Dunhams? I'd be happy to share what I have. Thanks
Julia

an article in Jackson County past and present states that James McPherson settled in Harrison county with his wife, Elizabeth Loudon and had 15 children. The article is about their son Stephen who settled in Jackson county. It states that Stephen was the 9th child of 15 and was b. abt 1810.

I'm wondering if this James had a son named Samuel b. abt 1821. My gggrandfather, Samuel Pierson/Pearson appears in Jackson county to marry 11 Dec 1840. He names his first son James. I've searched for his parents for 7 years without any luck. Could he be a McPherson vs. a Pierson ?

Thanks.
Merry Anne Pierson

PHOTO FOUND - Asa Tennant

  Hi Everyone,
Just wanted to let everyone know about a photo I found today. The photo was in an old small album of tin type photos. It was the only one in the album that was named. The photo was of a man that appeared to be in his 30's and was labeled "Asa Tennant". There was another photo of the same man with a woman of about the same age.
I am a member of several MyFamily.com sites, and I was sure I recognized the name from somewhere. I have looked around some and can't find the name anywhere on my sites. I thought I would post this to a few sites in hopes it will help someone find some old family photos.
If anyone has a connection to Asa Tennant and are interested in the photos, let me know. The album and photos are in an antique mall near Fairmont WV. The price was $59.00 for the album. If anyone wants the store location and info, just let me know.
Jeff Smith

Update: My 1771 John Cottrell did not marry Elizabeth Akert
but is buried at Cottrell cemetery near Fortville & Ingalls, Indian in Madison Co., IN. We believe Elizabeth's maiden name is either Rice or Rue and she was born Dec. 22, 1776 and also buried at Cottrell cemetery. I do know about Elizabeth Akert however who matches with my DNA but not my immediate relative. Have now tracked down several DNA cousins if interested.

Names of some early settlers in Harrison, Kanawha, Mason & Wood Co, [West] Virginia

Below is a couple of excerts from a book that mentions many names of some early Harrison, Kanawha, Mason & Wood County, (West) Virginia settlers.

CHRONICLES OF THE Scotch-Irish Settlement IN VIRGINIA EXTRACTED FROM THE ORIGINAL COURT RECORDS OF AUGUSTA COUNTY 1745-1800
Chalkley, Lyman. Baltimore, MD, USA: 1912.

CIRCUIT COURT RECORDS, SECTION "I."
JUDGMENTS.

Page 108
Gerard Brisco vs. Isaac Williams and Rebeccah and Joseph Tomlinson-- O. S. 103; N. S. 35--Bill in Harrison County. In spring of 1772 Gerard Brisco, John and Permenus Brisco and Joseph West became adventurers in the Western country. Wheeling was their object, but they found the lands already taken. In talking with sundry of the settlers and particularly with Joseph Tomlinson, ---- Martin, now deceased, late husband of Rebekah Martin, now wife of Isaac Williams, and by their advice they went down the Ohio to mouth of Muskingum and took possession of the place afterwards called Point Poteeme (Patience?) which was allotted to John Brisco. And the land opposite to Gerard Brisco. Orator came from Maryland. William Crawford, a surveyor of Augusta, was murdered by the Indians. ---- Martin, Rebecca's husband, was killed while hunting or trading with the Indians. Answer states, in fall of 1769 Samuel Tomlinson improved and settled the land and finally, in 1773, with Benj. Tomlinson, went there with a canoe of provisions. Rebecca was sister of Samuel Tomlinson, then Rebecca Martin, widow of John Martin. Samuel, Benjamin and Joseph were brothers. Permenus Briscoe and John Wilson depose in Woodford County, Kentucky, December, 1795. Nathaniel Tomlinson was also at Wheeling. John Wilson was one of the first party with Brisco in 1772. Gen. John Nevill deposes in Pittsburg. Benj. Tomlinson, aged 44, deposes in Allegheny County, Maryland, 14th April, 1796.

[p.169]
Andrew Fowler, Thomas Nappe, Arthur Watts's representatives, John Fox, Francis Self, Robert Stuart, Robert Murphy, John Smith, Alexr. Kinny, Wm. McAnulty, Mary Horn, and the following squatters, viz: Caleb Bailey, John Stockley, John Neal, Hugh Phillips (Phelps). Following persons petition to be made defendants as claiming title to some of the lands, viz: Mason Foley, Valentine Cooper, Oliver Hutchison, John Barnett, Matson Rieley, Thos. Leach, R---- Madox, James Beatty, Leonard Cap-linger, William Ratliff, Stephen Radcliff, Thos. Bucher, Saml. Barvelt, John Badgley, David Caul (Creel), Henry Deputy. Look up case of Coleman vs. Buffington. Certificates by Dunmore that William Bronaugh is entitled to 3,000 acres for services in the late war agreeable to proclamation of 1763 and wishes to locate it in Augusta County, on Ohio River, adjoining Dr. John Briscoe. Dated 1774. Andrew Fowler answers that he was a soldier at battle of Great Meadows and in Braddock's War. Sworn to in Bath County. Mary Horn of Spottsylvania County answers. She is sister of Wm. Magee, a volunteer in 1754 and 1755 in Braddock's War, and died in service. She was married 5th May, 1763, to Herod Horn in Spottsylvania County. James Neal made a settlement at mouth of Little Kanawha in 1772. In same year Benj. Harding made a settlement adjoining. Mark Harding, ditto. Henry Castle ditto, in 1773. James Gillespie petitions to be made a defendant. Owner of tract under Paul Armstrong who made the settlement. James Neal answers. In 1753 encouragements were held out by the Royal Government to settlers on western waters. Washington, on his return from Venango in December, 1753, or January, 1754, met many families crossing the Alleghenies. The Legislature, which was prorogued 14th February, 1754, appropriated £10,000 for encouragement and protection of western settlers. On 19th February, 1754, Dinwiddie issued a proclamation promising a land bounty to volunteer in the service and assist to expel French and Indians and help erect a fort at Forks of Monongalia. A regiment under Col. Joshua Fry was immediately raised and marched from Alexandria, about middle or latter end of March, 1754. Fry died at Patterson's Creek, and command devolved on Col. Washington, who had been defeated at Great Meadows on 17th April, 1754, having been dispatched from Williamsburg to Fort Cumberland in February, 1754, and having taken command of one Company from New York and one from South Carolina, as well as some Virginia Companies which had been previously raised and stationed upon frontier, from whence Washington rushed into the western country, meets and defeats a certain Jumonville, one of the enemy only escaping. Washington finds that the French were turning out of Fort Duquesne (now Pittsburg) too strong for him to withstand, retreats to Great Meadows, is attacked and compelled to surrender to De Villiere, but marches out of his little fortification with honors of war and returns to Wills Creek, viz: Fort Cumberland. At this surrender Lieutenants Stobo and Van Braam were surrendered to that officer as hostages. Within a year the First Virginia Regiment was disbanded, though raised again, or another in its stead, and that one or two other regiments were also raised in Virginia, prior to reduction of Fort Duquesne, for that was not evacuated by French until November, 1758. During that war one regiment was raised by Col. Washington, one by Col. Bird, and one by Col. Stephen, yet it appears the whole of the 200,000 acres were granted only to [p.169]
90 men. The grant was made 15th December, 1769, by order of Council, which expressly confines the claimants to the lands on Great Sandy and the Great Kenawha, and lands on Ohio waters between Sandy and Kenawha. Neal went on the campaign with Dunmore in 1774 and resided on the frontier until summer of 1777, when he raised a company of regulars, joined 13th Virginia Regiment, and marched to the Grand Army of the U. S. He was one of Commissioners to settle unpatented lands in Monongalia, &c. He has been in possession of part of the land for upwards of 40 years. Valentine Cooper answers that he had resided on the frontier of Virginia for 55 years. He had three brothers in the regular army in old French wars, and were in the army when Fort Duquesne was evacuated
