some of you have asked for results to my dna test for all females of my line. as many in hardy county are related (distantly also)i offer you this info which at present is way beyond me except the basics.

my lineage: me (fulk),miller, teets, wilson, tharp, hulver

the miller, teets, hulver are assuredly german
family holds the wilson to be scotch irish

"Mitochondrial haplogroup H is a predominantly Europen haplogaroup that originated outside of Europe before the last glacial maximum (LGM). It first expanded in the northern Near East and southern Caucasus between 33,000 and 26,000 years afo, and later migrations from Iberia suggest it reached Europe before the LGM. It has also spread to Siberia and Inner Asia. Today, about 40% of all mitochondrial lineages in Europe are classified as haplogroup H."

"Migrations in red are positions where your sequence has a different letter of the DNA sequence compared to the same position in the CRS."(cambridge reference sequence)

position CRS your result
16162 A G
16209 T C
16519 T C
(there are no extra letters which the CRS does not have (insertions). there is no dash - there are no missing letters which the CRS does have (deletions)).

as i stated, i am attempting to figure this out.
should you have a match, contact me. s

Hardy County began in 1785 when HAMPSHIRE CO. changed it's name and boundaries. HAMPSHIRE CO. was AUGUSTA CO. until 1753 . Again boundaries were also changed. HAMPSHIRE had alot of land. After it lost some of it's territory by splitting with/for HARDY, it was an average sized county.
It was 2 more counties before AUGUSTA and it is now GRANT CO WV.

It usually shows up as Hardy, Bedford, WV, USA

This may likely be due to the migration from lover central VA of many family through Harrisonburg, VA northwest to Hardy County WV

I am interested in James Stone (abt. 1745-1818) and his children --sons Thomas, Samuel, James Jr., George W, and William B; and daughters Margaret Johnston, Sarah Baker, Mary Davis, Rebecca Myers. James’ land was in the Limestone Mt, Branch Mt and Lost River areas. All of his children moved on to either Ohio or Illinois. Am trying to find the surnames of Samuel’s wife Rhoda and William’s wife Catherine both of whom married before leaving Hardy County. Would also like to know what happened to daughter Sarah and her husband John Baker.

Would like to correspond with those researching the Bradfields (Zachariah Sr. who married Elizabeth Stone and Leonard who married Sarah Stone)who spent time in Hardy County in the first half of the 19th C. Trying to find out when Zachariah’s son James might have died and who he married – Margaret [-?-]. Bradfield’s land was on the Little Ridge and on the south side of the Lost River and Pine Ridge. I am also trying to find out anything about Leonard and Sarah’s children … they probably had 4 children Elizabeth who m. George Robinson, Thomas B who m. Mary, a Zachariah, and an unidentified daughter who might have married a Coby. Leonard’s land was on the north side of the Big Ridge

Edward Elsey & Marriages

I post this here to see if anyone has any additional information! As some of you may know, I have spent much time on the puzzle that is my American progenitor grandfather of the Elsey family, Edward!

Edward Elsey was the father of my next grandfather in that line, Thompson Elza. We believe that Thompson was born about 1806 and that in 1821 Levi Coberly was appointed his guardian (document on file in Randolph County). Thompson's mother was Sarah "Sally" Thompson. It may be that Sarah died at childbirth as we have no record of her death.

In 1811 (marriage certificate is on file), Edward Elsey married Cicily Rivies (who was believed to have been about 15-16 at the time) in Hardy County. As far as I can ascertain, there were 3 children born to this marriage: Margaret, Catharine and Dorotha.
There is no marriage record for Margaret; Catharine was married to a Hiram Wilson and Dorotha was married to a William Ray. I am now in touch with a descendant of the last marriage through Dorotha & William's son, Jacob Ray. She sent me a photo of Jacob Ray and I find a resemblance from that photo to those I have of my next grandfather, Edward's grandson & Thompson's son, Solomon Elza.

As I previously mentioned, there is no death record for Sarah "Sally" (Thompson) Elza, daughter of David & Anna (Dabney) Thompson. There is no death record for Edward Elsey (we just believe he had to die before Levi Coberly was appointed Thompson Elza's guardian in 1821). There exists a record to show Edward Elsey, along with Nicholas Elsey (believed to be his son just previous to Thompson), at a sale in 1819 in Hardy County. There is also no death record that can be found at present for Cicily Rivies, although there are census records to indicate that she lived a fairly long life.

If anyone has any information of any kind regarding any of this, please contact me! I can be reached via email at: margbeckwith@verizon.net or by phone at: (304)636-6440.

Any assistance will be greatly appreciated!

Berry (1819-1892) and several more siblings who, by the 1840 census, were either dead or not living at home. Of note, Emeline Berry was a widow by that census.

In Feb 1861, John W. Berry married Mary Virginia Houseworth. By 1870, they were living in Martinsburg, Berkeley County, VA (now WVa).
In the HARDY CO VA records, name Buffenbarker was spelled however the writer heard it, as with all the other names, it has various spellings. The SHOBES, HAUS, PETERSONS, CARRS, and all were in BURK & LANCASTER CO PA before coming to AUGUSTA CO VA in 1750. Augusta became HAMPSHIRE in 1753, and HAMPSHIRE became HARDY in 1785. Also with them from Switzerland were LUTZ, STUCKY, REIGER, LANCISCO, ARMENTROUT and others.
GINNY 2

I know the CARRs lived in ROSS ca 1808, before moving to FAYETTE CO OH. The name JACOB is repeated in all Carr lines, as Hans JACOB KARR was the immigrant to PA from Germany, and father to Henry Carr of VA.
Unfortunately, I am NOT familiar with a Peter CARR, though another relative on the Peterson side, John Jacob Peterson Jr. of VA, brother-in-law of Henry CARR, married an Eve Barker, maiden name forgotten. She had been captured by the Indians along with 3 PETERSON sisters, and her husband Phillip Barker was axed to death. She and the Peterson girls were rescued in OH and brought back to VA.
GINNY

Well as I remember, the SHOBE/SCHAUB, HAUS/HAAS/HOUSE, HYER/HIRE, lANCISCO, ARMENTROUT, REAGER, BAUER, LUTZ, STUCKY and others came to PA ca 1740's to LANCASTER CO PA. from SWITZERLAND. They moved to VA ca 1750.
Most marriages were in AUGUSTA or HAMPSHIRE co.
Hi,

I just took a trip to the old Evans cemetery at the Bean Settlement near Inkerman, east of Moorefield, Hardy county. Does anyone know where the THARP or BRILL cemeteries that should be in the same area are located. Thanks.
