Thank you for all of the information. Unfortunately I do not know anything about Nellie A (Babbitt) Bruce Durbin. I was doing research for the Flats Cemetery in New Manchester, Hancock Co. WV and Ephraim & Mary Prosser Durbin are both buried there. If I do come across anything about Nellie I will let you know. Nice job on doing your research.

I have a studio photograph of Edward (Eddie) Gretchen, taken in the 1940s. He was my mother's friend and she kept his picture. My mother was Margaret Pruni of Elm Street and died in 2001. I hate to throw the photograph away. Maybe he or a family member would like to have it. The photograph is slightly faded, otherwise in mint condition.

I have concluded through various sources that the John B. Durbin that I was researching was the son of Ephraim Durbin and his wife Mary Prosser.
These sources include among others, (1)the Complete Civil War Pension file # X-C-2667-767 of DURBIN, John B. who served Co. H., 157th Ohio Vol. Infantry with enlistment at Steubenville, Ohio; (2)A History of Cuyahoga County and the City of Cleveland, Volume II, Pages 121 and 122, published 1924 by Walter R. Coates; (3) interment Records for Woodland Cemetery, Cleveland, Ohio; (4) various copies of marriage, death and interment records that relate to John B. Durbin; (4) U.S. FEDERAL Census enumerations for differing family members from 1810 through 1930.

JOHN B. DURBIN
1847: b. Fairview
1861: moved to Steubenville, Ohio
1864: enlisted military service
1864: mustered out military service
1869: March 11, m. Almira Wheelock at Steubenville, Ohio
1869-1876(abt): three children born to this marriage; dau., Harriet and Alice(who died early), son Harry E.
1877: separated from Almira and eloped with Amanda Roberts to Cleveland, Ohio
1878: son Albert b. 12 January to Amanda and John B. Durbin
1879: Amanda A. Durbin d.1 April; of consumption; burial Woodland Cemetery, Cleveland, Ohio
1881:January 3; married Nellie A. Bruce Cuyahoga County, Ohio
1892: April 23; died at Newbough twp., Cuyahoga County, Ohio, of consumption, with burial at Woodland Cemetery, Cleveland, Ohio
Burial: Woodland Cemetery, Section: 10; Lot 77; Grave 2; also in this lot is the "widow" Nellie A.

At the time of John B. Durbin's death he was survived by one sibling. A sister whose name was Harriet. She was the wife of Samuel Murray of New Cumberland, Hancock County, West Virginia. Samuel Murray signed and dated an Affidavit that was included in the Civil War Pension file that said in part: "Knew him intimately from 1865--1873--that he even lived in his home(that of Samuel Murray) part of 1866".

His daughter Harriet married Louis Rolandt at Steubenville, Ohio and lived her life out there. Son Harry moved to Cleveland, Ohio-- living his life out in that city. Son Albert (child of Amanda Roberts) was sent to an orphan asylum and retrieved by neighbors who adopted him. His name became Albert Schill. He lived his life out in Cleveland, Ohio.

The above Civil War Pension file is an interesting read as John B. Durbin failed to get a divorce from Almira(Wheelock) Durbin. This file was of "Contesting Widows" attempting to get a widows pension based on John's military service. Almira won.

I have never been able to find out who Amanda Roberts was. According to a various statements she was a widow with daughters of her own and probably from the Steubenville, Ohio area.

I am not related to the Durbins. My interest is through the widow Nellie A.(Babbitt)Bruce Durbin who was a sister to a ggrandfather. It was my hope that thoroughly researching Nellie would help me locate the date and place of death for her mother.

Willing to provide a hard copy of the Civil War Pension file to interested parties.

I'm sorry that I mistated as fact that I sent for the Civil War Pension file for Ephraim Durbin. I thought I had but didn't as I had already concluded that the John B. Durbin I was researching was indeed the son of Ephraim Durbin of Hancock County, West Virginia.

What may be of interest to you is a line or two found in-- A History of Cuyahoga County and the City of Cleveland --Volume II--1924, which had an article on pages 121 and 122 about Harry E. Durbin(the son of John B. Durbin).
In says in part;-- His great-grandfather, John Durbin moved from Maryland to West Virginia, buying a farm near Fairview and spending his last days in the Village of Fairview. The grandfather, Ephraim Durbin, was probably born at Fairview, West Virginia.-- It goes on to state that John B. Durbin, was the father of Harry E. and was born at Fairview, West Virginia in 1847.
Therefore if Ephraim Durbin is a brother to your Fanny, their fathers name would be John.

I also pulled out the Complete Civil War Pension file for John B. Durbin(who served 157th Reg., Ohio) and reread it with an eye out for the Thayer surname. Found nothing in this file signed by or about "Thayer".

Will let you know if there is anything in that packet that points to a relationship with the Thayers.

My interest in the Durbins is through John B.
First there is William Murray, move to the Northern Panhandle of WV in 1818 with his wife Jane Mill and two sons William C & James.

William C. Murray married Margaret Latimer. Their marriage resulted in two sons and two daughters. I don't have data on the daughters: but both sons died in the Civil War. William died while a POW in Richmond Va. John R became sick while in camp and was brought home, died a few days later.

Craig,

Have you found the death date of Grace Edna Williams/ Marshall?

I couldn't find her death. But I did find the twin girls ,so if she died at the same time then it is 1920.

Grace Edna Marshall
Born: Oct 19, 1920 New Cumberlan, Hancock Cty,W.Va
Died: Dec 2, 1920 New Cumberland, Hancock Cty,W.Va
1 Month 13 days old
Father: Samuel A. Marshall Born: Ohio
Mother: Grace Williams Born: Ohio
Burial; New Cumberland, Hancock Cty, W.Va

Lelia Anne Marshall
Born: Oct 19,1920 New Cumberland,Hancock Cty,W.Va
Died: Dec 3,1920 New Cumberland,Hancock Cty,W.Va
1 month 14 days old
Father: Samuel A. Marshall Born: Ohio
Mother: Grace Williams Born: Ohio
Burial: New Cumberland, Hancock Cty, W. Va

I couldn't find a listing for Grace the mother..But they died in Dec 1920. Maybe Dec 2..
Samuel and Grace were both born in Ohio, so maybe the death date of the twins will help you get an obit on them..
Hope this helps..
This is strange information indeed. Beverly's (who is not deceased, but is the ex-wife of Patrick Walsh whom I'm looking for info on) Parents are Freda (Sitzberger) and Elmer Glazzard. My great great grandparents. I've never heard of those names before (the ones in the census info), but like I said family is not good at sharing information. Elmer and Freda divorced I believe, but Elmer never remarried as far as I know. He died in Massilon some years later of TB.

What you say about the border and such makes sense.. I wish I knew what my grandfather did as a profession.

Hi Laura,

I am not presently a paying member of ancestry.com ... so I thank you immensely for your help in this.

I know Beverly was born in August, I share the same birth month. If I remember correctly, she was born between 6,7, maybe the 8th day.

The Glazzards are from Youngstown, OH. I don't know if they lived in PA for a period or not, but as far as I know they didn't... however my family isn't known for sharing information.

Also, if this is indeed the right Beverly, any reason why anyone would put a wrong birth place on the license?

It may very well be a coincidence and not the same Beverly
Glazzard.

Beverly does appear to be my grandmother, I wish it would have her birth month for confirmation tho... I will check that site again.

Also, was not aware that my grandmother was born in PA.

Looking for information on my grandfather Patrick J Walsh. None of my living relatives seems to know anything about him. I got my first lead today here:

http://pilot.familysearch.org/recordsearch/start.html#marria...

His name was Patrick J Walsh. He married Beverly May Glazzard in 1945 in Hancock, West Virginia.

I also searched this site: http://www.wvculture.org/vrr/va_bcresults.aspx?LastName=wals...

but was unable to come up with any information. I've looked online for genealogical societies in the area, but they don't have any later records listed. I'd really like to find out where he was born.

If anyone can offer any information or tips it would be greatly appreciated.

I found the WALSH- GLAZZARD marriage at the WV culture site. It stated the following:

Patrick J. WALSH, age 27, born Washington County, PA (born about 1918) married 24 August 1945, Hollidays Cove, Hancock Co., WV
Beverly May GLAZZARD, age 23, born Allegheny, PA (born about 1922)

I checked 1930 Washington County, PA census for Patrick WALSH and found the best match in 1930-South Strabane, Washington Co., PA. There was Patrick WELSH, age 11, (born about 1919) with parents Thomas and Lydia WELSH. Their other children included Marie, b.1912, Rose, b.1915, Elinore,b. 1916, and Edward, b.1918. This coal mining family lived in South Fayette, Allegheny PA in 1920.

The dad, Thomas, was born about 1888 in Ohio, and his parents were both born Ireland. Lydia was born about 1892 in Pennsylvania, and her father was born Ireland, mother in England. Thomas and Lydia married about 1911, and all their children were born in PA.

Hope this helps!
Laura

If you have Ancestry.com, check the Ohio censuses for Patrick's possible dad, Thomas WALSH or WELSH, born about 1888, Ohio. Maybe Patrick and Annie F. WALSH ?

Also, I never did nail down any GLAZZARD family in Allegheny, so I didn't find Beverly May on the 1930 census, and she should be there. Any clues who her parents were? What's her birthdate?

Laura

I found Beverly in the 1930 Youngstown census, finally, and what's strange is there are no parents with her. Here is the 1930 census record:

ONASCH, Julius, head, age 33
, Anna, wife, age 33
ALLBERY, Novella, roomer, widow, age 34
, Maxine, roomer, age 12
GLAZARD, Beverly, boarder, age 8
, Elmer, boarder, age 5
, Millard, boarder, age 3

Three different surnames, all in one household, with no relationships given for these three very young children. The GLAZARD children are young enough to be Novella's kids. I found her late husband:

Clarence Willard ALLBERRY
b. 5 Aug 1892 Fayette County, OH
died 4 Aug 1923, Starr Twp, Hocking Co., OH
spouse Novella ALLBERRY
father: Charles or Clarence ALLBERRY
mother: Emma MACKFIE

Was Mr. GLAZZARD Novella's second husband, and she had three more children with him? Unlikely, but possible.

I also found the Social Security Death Index listing for Beverly's two brothers:
Elmer W. GLAZZARD
born 9 June 1924
died 6 Dec 1999, Youngstown, Mahoning, OH

Miley G. GLAZZARD
born 2 Oct 1927
died 12 Sept 2000, Redding, Shasta Co., CA

Elmer and Miley/Millard/Milton GLAZZARD both lived for a time in Shasta County, California, and both married and divorced ladies out there.

When did grandmother Beverly die? Did she die a WALSH, or did she re-marry? I didn't see her in the SSDI. Do you have a death certificate for her?

To answer the "wrong" birthplace question - Mahoning County, Ohio and Pennsylvania share a border, and are both filled with immigrants working in the industrial factories and coal mines. Lots of moving back and forth between urban townships.

Laura

I need some help sorting out the Swearingens in Hancock County, WV in 1850. I have Karel L. Whyte's book but the particular Swearingen I'm looking for is not found in it.

I have a Henry D. Swearingen, born about 1830 in either WV or PA, who was living in Hancock County during the 1850 census. He is a laborer for Joseph Silverthorn. I am able to track Henry D. to Meigs County, Ohio in 1860-1870, to Brooke County WV in 1880 and then to Midway in Washington County PA by 1890s. He died in 1892 in Midway.

Henry served in the Civil War from Meigs. He first married Mary (widow of Samuel Kirkendall) in Meigs about 1860, and later Mary J. Hand in 1877 in Washington County but not far from Dallas, WV. Mary was the daughter of John and Sarah Hand.

Can anyone help me sort out which Swearingen family Henry D. belongs to in Hancock County WV in 1850?

Thanks,

Rick Wilson
New York, NY
rwilson7@aol.com

I just logged on and found this very interesting. Samuel and Grace were my grandparents. I don't know much other than what I was told as a child. My grandmother died due to the fire and the twins died a little later. I would love to know more about them. Did your grandmother live near them?

Does anyone know of any old cemetaries near Arroyo, WV? I have been told that some of my relatives are buried in a cemetary known as the Bennett Cemetary or Lowry Cemetary. I am looking for information on the deaths and burials of 3 little girls. Della Mae, Pearly Mae and Alma Davis. Della and Pearly were twins. All died young and were supposedly living on a farm in Arroyo. Their parents names were William M and Sarah M Davis. Thanks for any help.

I haven't been able to find much of anything on Grace the mother's death. The little bit of information that I do have comes from my grandma's memory. She says that Samuel did remarry but I do not know the name. I think they divorced.

I have Grace Edna Williams (1890- 1919) married to Samuel Alexander Marshall (1889- 1967). I appologize; I should have been more specific in my orginal post. She, along with infant twins Grace Edna and Lelia Marshall, died in a fire in New Cumberland, WV. I believe she was born in Ohio, but I am not sure.

This is a very curious event in my family history. My grandmother tells me that Grace and her twins died together in a house fire and that she specifically remembers 1919 being the date on the tombstone. I've found cemetery records that confirm 1919 being the date of death for all three; however, I've found death records for each of the twins that correspond with what you have shown me, both of them being born and dying in 1920. Their death records also cite malnutrition as the cause of death, with one dying from it just a day before the other. I'm just not sure what to believe! May I ask where you found the information you've shown me?

Ephraim Durbin married Mary Prosser on 16 Sep 1841 in Brooke Co (now Hancock Co, WV). Their marriage is recorded at the Brooke Co, WV court house in Book 2-a on page 083. They were married by the Rev. White. Ephrain was baptised on 16 Nov 1818 by Rev. George M. Scott in the Fairview Presbyterian Church. I believe that Mary Prosser was the daughter of Abraham Prosser. All are buried in the Flats Cemetery, New Manchester, Hancock Co, WV. I have not completed my research but they also had a daughter, Sarah who married Josiah Manypenny on 03 Jul 1871. Unfortunately she died on 31 Dec 1872 from comsumption. You can email me directly at emsdrake@yahoo.com if you wish.

Grace Edna Williams Marshall was born on 29 Dec 1888 and died on 14 Nov 1920 in the Ohio Valley Hospital, Steubenville, Ohio from extensive burns due to a gas explosion. Grace was the daughter of Edward Williams and Nettie Harrington. Grace was married to Samuel Alexander "Sike" Marshall. I think that George Allison already gave you my email address but if not it is emsdrake@yahoo.com
