I am looking for the family of origin for Jacob Johnson/Johnston. He was born c. 1782-1785, and married Mary Esther Parker, daughter of James and Rebecca (Wolfe) Parker of Hampshire Co. Jacob and Mary were in Scioto Co., Ohio by 1813, moved to White Co., Indiana in 1832, where Jacob died in 1843. On the 1880 census Rebecca (Johnson) Vinson, daughter of Jacob and Mary, stated both her parents were born in Virginia.

Any assistance appreciated. Joyce in Iowa

Could someone please tell me if there is a Foster family of Hampshire Co, WVA website? Or Newman?
I'm searching for Hannah Foster b. ca 1775-1780, married John Pierce Newman ca 1794 in Hampshire Co and died in Adams Co, OH ca 1812 when John remarries. I don't know where she was born or who her parents were. There was a large Newman family in Hampshire Co near Romney in the mid 1700's to early 1800's but many of them moved on to Adams Co, OH early in the 19thc. I have found Hannah's birth mistakenly as 1785 but her first child [my 3rd grandfather] was born in 1795.

Researching Richard BOYCE bc 1740-1790 in what became Hampshire Co WV and dc 1807 in Gallatin, Sumner Co, TN. Married Sarah HELM. He may have had a second wife with surname PARKS. Children by Sarah were: NICHOLAS, JOHN, ROBERT, ANN, and ELIZABETH. I have information on the Nicholas BOYCE line. Richard BOYCE settled in Frederick Co, VA and descendants were still in the area when it became Hampshire Co VA. Later, they are found in Kentucky Co and Fayette Co VA, and Bourbon Co KY, and Sumner Co TN. From there Ralls and Marion Co, MO and then Bastrop, Travis, and Llano Co, TX. If you have any information on the BOYCE family please contact me.

Philoman/Fillman E. Dunn m. Miss Lease, 1840s

I just received the death certificate for my ancestor Minerva Virginia DUNN Bingham McConney. She was born Feb 1844 in Virginia. The death certificate lists here parents as "Fillman E. DUNN, b. VA, and Miss LEASE, b. VA. The informant is Mary Caruthers, a name I do not recognize, so I do not know who she was or how she was related.

Philoman E. Dunn is listed as 20-30 years old in the 1840 Hampshire Co, VA census. Two doors down is Phillip LONG. In the 1850 Hampshire VA census: Nelson Long 23 b. VA; Mary 30 VA; Henry 13 VA; Mary 11 VA; Jane 6. (Deixt 24. p. 251. 10/18/1850) They are living next to Henry Lease Sr., age 60, and Henry Lease Jr, age 25. The Henry's move to Washington and Bremer Co, IA 1860.

Nelson is the son of Phillip (and Mary Flood). In 1860, my ancestor Minerva marries William Bingham in Bremer Co, Iowa. In the census, they are living with Nelson, age 32. Nimrod Long, age 6, b. IA, is also in the household. Nimrod Long, age 25, is living with Minerva in 1880, now married to David C. McConney, listed as a brother-in-law.

If Minerva Virginia was known as Jane when she was little, then she's the 6 year old in Nelson Long's 1850 household, maybe with her mother and step-father, living next to her grandfather. There's a WorldConnect entry consistent with that, that says Mary Ann Lease (1819-1859) married Nelson Long. But that requires Minerva Virginia to have been Jane, and so I'm hoping someone has additional information to support that leap.

If anyone can shed light on this, please do let me know.

Amelia

I've been trying to find info on the above 2 for quite a few years off and on and can't seem to make any head way. I did manage to find a marriage record on them when my cousin and I made a rather hurried trip down there on a long week-end a while back. They were married Dec 9, 1783 by John Alderson. But we couldn't find anything else on them. Some researchers say they are the parents of Amos, born in 1801, but that was about 17 years later. Any brothers and sisters, cemetery records, tax records, just anything. I "believe" Caatherine Burns was born there around 1764, any leads on her parents? All help and advise will be greatly appreciated.

LOOKINMG TO CONNECT WITH SOMEONE WHO IS RESEARCHING OR HAS RESEARCHED THE "HAY" SURNAME IN AND AROUND HAMPHIRE COUNTY. INTERESTED IN THE 1900'S TO NOW. PARTICULAR INTEREST IS "DOROTHY HAY." DON'T KNOW MUCH ABOUT DOROTHY EXCEPT IN THE MID 1940'S, DOROTHY WAS LIVING AND WORKING IN AND AROUND THE LOGAN COUNTY AREA. DOROTHY BECAME PREGNANT, AND ON MAY 20, 1947 GAVE BIRTH TO A DAUGHTER. THE CHILD WAS DELIVERED BY A "DR. GIBSON" WHO WORKED IN AND AROUND THE CABELL COUNTY AREA. THE HOSPITAL WAS THE (NOW GONE) MEMORIAL HOSPITAL, IN HUNTINGTON, WEST VIRGINIA. DOROTHY HAD MADE ARRANGEMENTS TO ADOPT THE CHILD AT BIRTH. THE ADOPTIVE PARENTS WERE MY AUNT AND UNCLE, THE CHILD BECAME MY FIRST COUSIN, AND MY BEST FRIEND. MY AUNT AND UNCLE HAD REQUESTED TO ALL WHO KNEW OF THE ADOPTION TO NEVER TELL MY COUSIN. IT WAS ONLY AFTER HER MOTHERS DEATH IN THE 90'S THAT MY COUSIN FOUND OUT SHE WAS ADOPTED. ABOUT TWO MONTHS AGO MY COUSIN TOLD ME THIS STORY AND ASK FOR MY HELP IN FINDING OUT ABOUT "DOROTHY HAY." THE FAMILY THAT KNEW OF THE ADOPTION ARE NOW GONE, AND OTHER THAN AN ORIGINAL BIRTH CERTIFICATE THERE WASN'T MUCH TO GO ON.
HERE ARE A COUPLE OF THINGS, I HAVE PUT TOGETHER. HOPE IT JOGS SOMEONES MEMORY.
1. DOROTHY WAS ABOUT 20 YEARS OLD AT THE TIME OF BIRTH, THAT WOULD PUT HER BEING BORN IN 1927 GIVE OR TAKE A YEAR.
2. DOROTHY WAS SAID TO HAVE HAD "RED HAIR and GREEN EYES"
3. DOROTHY WAS TALL AND SLENDER, WITH SODT FEATURES.
4 ON THE ORIGINAL BIRTH CERTIFICATE DOROTHY ONLY NAMED HERSELF, SHE DIDN'T NAME A BIRTH FATHER.
5. DOROTHY NAMED HER DAUGHTER "SHARON KAY" POSSIBLY A FAMILY NAME?
6. ALTHOUGH NO BIRTH FATHER WAS NAMED, DOROTHY GAVE THE CHILD THE LAST NAME OF "SCHUMACHER" MAYBE HER HUSBANDS NAME IN AN EARLIER OR LATER MARRIAGE?
IF ANY OF THIS RINGS A BELL, PLEASE CONTACT ME.

THANKING YOU IN ADVANCE,
CHARLES MEADE
CBMEADE@AOL.COM
304-522-0244

Valentine Cooper 1765-1835 Hampshire & Hardy Co.

I have traced my Cooper family back to Valentine Cooper born 1765 died 1835 in Hardy Co. WV. I am
unable to find his parents but have several possibilities, maybe someone can help solve the puzzle.
The area Valentine & family lived in was Hampshire Co. VA before 1786 and Fredrick Co. VA before
1754. Makes it hard to track records. Some of the possibilities:
Valentine Cooper, born between 1720 - 1730, fought in the Indian wars with three brothers. Possibly
the same one that died in Wood Co. in 1810.
George Cooper born 1729 married Mary Rinehart, died 1809.
Job Cooper born 1734, brother of George & Valentine.
Jacob Cooper born 1721 left will in Fredrick Co. in 1758, 7 children.
Leonard Cooper married Sarah Brill, left will in Fredrick Co. 1766.
Thomas Cooper, left will in Fredrick Co. 1785
There is also a Fredrick Cooper (no dates) married Elizabeth Kyle, had children George, Valentine
Fredrick & others.

Some of these were in Fredrick Co. MD in early to mid 1700's, by the mid to late 1700's were in the
vicinity of Cooper Mountain in what is now Hardy Co. WV. Some lived for a time just across the
border to the north in PA.

George and brothers owned a tannery on Cooper Mountain, and many of the descendants of this family
were tanners, saddlers, leather workers and shoe makers. This trade ran in my line for four generations,
convincing me that there is a connection, that Valentine is the son or grandson of one of these.

I have the descendants from Valentine b. 1765 d. 1835 in Hardy Co. down to my family. Does anyone
have anything that will connect Valentine to the Cooper Mountain Brothers?

Connie Cooper Lasley

Researching Hampshire/Hardy County for information on Emily Evans. My ggg grandmother was Emily Evans, married to Eli or Elijah Davis. My Emily Davis(Evans) was born either 1832 or 1833(1860 Census)and died 1902(is buried at Queens Point, Keyser WV) There is a Emily Winny Evans, the daughter of George and Ann Evans. When was she born? and did she die at a young age. There is another Emily Evans, daughter of Alexander and Ann Evan(Tharp). Alexander was born 1803 and married Ann Tharp January 2,1826 - daughter of John & Elizabeth Tharp. Alexander was the son of Caleb Evans and Eve Evans(Waddel). Additional children of Alexander and Ann were John, William, Rhoda, Jemima. When was Emily Evans, daughter of Alexander born. Could it have been abt. 1832 or 1833. Any information would be greatly appreciated. Have a good day and thanks

I am doing research on my family and the Shannons' are an important part of my effort since my mother, Virginia Florence Shannon Bader, was part of the family(12th child).

Some background: Edgar W. Shannon(my grandfather)was born in Springfield, Hampshire, West Virginia in 1873. He married Louise(maiden name and date unknown). Their first of 13 children, Benjamin, was born in 1895. They left WV in the early 1900's and settled in Frostburg, Allegany, Maryland.

Edgar W. was the son of Jeremiah Chadwick Shannon(b. 1846) and Florence Bryan Shannon(b. 1849) Both, I believe, were born in Springfield. Jeremiah was the son of Benjamin Shannon(b. 1821)and Hannah Catherine Chadwick Shannon(b. 1825), both having been born in Springfield. I have further linage if anyone is interested.

I need help with the maiden name's of my grandmother, Louise Shannon and the parents of Florence Bryan Shannon. Also, any other information about this family and resources that might help me on my quest would be appreciated.

Thanking you in advance for your response,
Jack S. First is Ernhardt Glaze and the second is Peter McCain. Can't find any records for these two at this time. Any information would be greatful and appreciated. It would appear that children of both these men left the area after 1780 and settled in Greene County, Tennessee.

Jesse was a widower, and when he remarried, he was 48 years old. Jesse married in Tucker County WV. Any information would be of great help. Thank you.

I am looking for any information about one John T. Moreland, born sometime between 1815 - 1820 in Hampshire County, VA/WVA. Family history states that he had at least two wives and has him fathering some 15 to 20 children, including Robert Lee Moreland, Sr. I believe I found John T. in the 1850 census and slave schedules in Hampshire county, and then again in 1870 in Charleston, Kenawha Co. WVA. Oral family history also states that he owned a "plantation" in Hampshire County and fought in the Civil War. One item of consistency between the anecdotal family history and the census data I have found to date is that he was a saddle and harness maker. Anyone have any information about this family?

Thanks so much!
Linda Moreland

Re: St. Andrew ship, our Newmans??????

Hello Newman families,
I am a Newman from Adams County, Ohio. My fathers family came from Hampshire County in early 1800's. George Newman and Elizabeth Robertson are my fifth grandparents. Georges parents are supposed to be Johann Christoph Neumann and Dorothea Luick, and they were supposed to have come to this country on the St. Andrew. But I don't think so. I am hoping some one knows who Georges father really was.
I was told that our Newmans came on this ship. ST. ANDREW ON SEPTEMBER 12, 1734.
1734 St. Andrew
[List 36 A, B, C] St. Andrew (Galley)
Captain: John Stedman
From: Rotterdam, March 1734
By Way of: Plymouth
Arrival: Philadelphia, 12 Sep 1734

Eighty nine Palatines, who with their families, making in all two hundred sixty one persons.

Now this ship is suppossed to carry Johann Christoph Neumann and wife Dorothea Luick. Well with the help of Robert I found this ship.
It holds the family of Christoph Neiman, which maybe a phonic spelling for Neumann. Then the name is spelled another way Neuman. There was no Johann attached to his name. His wife was not Dorothea Luick, it was Susanna (Muelmer) Neuman. Now I do not know if this family went to Viginia. If they did not go to Virginia, then how do we know our family is German?????
I am searching for the answer.
If any one want to write my e-mail is lauracroft@peoplepc.com
Sincerely,
Brenda (Newman) Moss
We are looking for information on James Smith, born abt. 1791, whose sister Elizabeth born abt. 1789, both in Virginia.

James Smith married Marie Hoffman (b. abt. 1795), on 29 October 1816, in Allegany County, Maryland. He was a cabinet maker. From Civil War records, we found that the Smiths lived in Cumberland, Maryland.

Children of James and Marie:
Elizabeth, b. abt. 1817
David, b. 18??
James, b. abt. 1824
Augustus, b. 1829
Ann Marie, b. abt. 1835

It is quite probable that James Smith was from either Mineral or Hampshire counties in West Virginia, as they both border Allegany County, Maryland.

We know that James Smith oldest dauther married A. Beale and was in the War of 1812 with him.

We have found with so little information on our Smiths, it is like looking for a needle in Haystack. So, we hope that a Smith descendant can help us break down our Smith brick wall.
I am seeking information about my great great grandmother Vienna Royse Garland. The census records indicate she was born in VA. She married Nathaniel Rice Garland in Lewis County Ky 1824. John Clayton Royse was her brother, I believe, as he was 11 years older and is mentioned in the marriage record. There is a John Rice listed in the book "Allegheny Passage" as being a member of the Church of the Brethren. He purchased acreage on the Little Cacapon in 1777. Apparerntly some of the family moved, along with other members of the Brethren congregation, to KY. I have come to a complete "dead end" regarding Vienna and hopefully someone has infomation regarding the Royse/Rice family. Thanks!!!

I would like to exchange documented information with others on the various HAINES families that appear in Hampshire County 1860 and in earlier records. At this time I am researching Samuel Haines, born about 1805, died about 1869. He married Sarah Carlyle ca 1830, and they had about 10 children. I am also researching Henry Haines who died in Hampshire County in 1839. Is anyone else researching any of the early Haines families of Hampshire County? If so, I would like to compare records with you.

Wards - (W)VA - Ohio - Illinois

My mother's WARD family apparently left the Hampshire Co, (W)VA area about 1820 and settled in the Ross Co, OH area for about 30 years. An 1850 Ross Co census identifies John Ward as 67 years old and having been born in Maryland; John's wife, Catherine is listed as 65 and having been born in Virginia. My gg-grandfather Thornton Ward's sisters married into the Talbot, Teeters, Crozier, and Caldwell families in the southern Ohio area ca 1840's. By the 1850's, this particular Ward family had moved on to settle on land in Cumberland Co, IL, where Catherine is listed as a widow on the 1860 IL census. The home that Thornton built along the National Road in Cumberland Co, IL ca 1860 still stands, and our family is currently in the process of having it listed for historical purposes. My 81-yr-old mother would love to know about her g-grandfather's WARD family prior to Ross Co, but it's been difficult for me to get a trace on this elusive John and Catherine Ward.

Some time ago, I was asked to provide what I knew about my greatparents, Amos Miller, 1857-1915/Mary Elizabeth Sirbaugh, 1858-1907. I intended to provide this, but did not. I also lost the query reference and e-mail address. Mea Culpa!

The following is for my lost querier: Amos Miller's father is Stephen Miller, both of whom are listed in Daniel P. Oates's "The 1860 Federal Census of Hampshire County, Virginia," page 43. Stephen is then age 60, and living with his second wife, Sarah A. Heironimus, age 37. Amos is Wesley T. Miller, age 3. The middle initial is an error of the enummerator. Amos' birth name is controversial, but consensus is that it is Wesley Amos Miller. The human source of what I know was given to me by Connie (Miller) Howdyshell, deceased, daughter of James Robert Miller.

I will make every attempt to respond appropriately to any query request for a copy of the Personal Ancestral File (PAF) family group sheet for Amos & Mary Elizabeth, which provides data for their five children: Bertha Estella, Elmer Bruce, James Robert, Charles William, and Lester Paul.

One Jacob Grapes b. 1801 and Sarah probably born about 1803. I beleive they were orphans. Jacob's family said he came from Hampshire Co. Does anyone have any guardianship information that may discuss these persons. There are discrepancies on who their parents were. If their father died and the mother remarried, her name may have been Susan or Elizabeth. Sarah supposedly married a Ricahrdson and went to "Ohio" n.f.i.
