My family tree includes HALL and CRANE of Greenbrier County. I have gathered a large amount of information from oral stories, a family Bible, and the Amwell Church Cemetery. I can trace my ggggrandfather (Thomas Augustus Hall, Sr. b. 7/19/1842 in W/VA and I believe his father may have come from Virginia (specifically, Montgomery, Bout. Co., Monroe or Augusta Co.) I would appreciate any information that might relate. Willing to share.

I am looking for any information on my ancestor James Smith and family. James was born in Rockbridge County, VA., cir1745, removed to North Carolina, cir 1765, and married Cassandra TUCKER. James SMITH was a Tory and was with Cornwallis at Yorktown. In 1788 James moved his family to Greenbrier County, Va., and settled on the head of Wolf Creek. In 1806 James moved his family over the mountains to what is now Manchester, in Adams County, Ohio.

James is believed to be the father or brother of Mary SMITH who married John HOGSHEAD, 1773-1819, he died in 1799.

James is believed to be the brother of John SMITH, wife Catherine, who died in Monroe County in 1809. John SMITH had children; Christopher, Charles, Margaret, Samuel, James, George, William, and Joseph.

James is also believed to be the brother of Christian SMITH, wife Elizabeth, who died in 1816, Monroe County. They had children William, George, John, Joseph, Elizabeth, and Barbara.

Some time a go I was talking to a group and one had land in WV on Moss Mountain at Muddy Creek Is this mountain named for a Family or just moss on it ???

I did get to it about 5 years ago and have photos of it will be on my web site soon. There was a web site of the Muddy Creek Dig but it off the web now . my wife's family history in WV is SEE / ZEH from Muddy Creek WV and Davis / Babcock for New Salem WV
I had to go over a barb wire fence and then up the pasture and this is when I had a full lag cast .pins Rods and lot of pain . All that over a Woodpecker , A story for another day .

I recently visited White Sulphur Springs on a Saturday and found the location that my grandfather lived in 1951. The address was 117 Holmes Lane. Just a little alley directly behind a big green building right off of Mountain Ave. The home is no longer there. Unfortunately there's not much in town and not many resorces. I also visited the Library as well as the Library and Historical Society in Lewisburg. I'm looking for pictures of that area around the late 1940's into 1950. Seeking information on the family and origins of Solomon THOMAS b. 1795-1800 poss. in Montgomery Co. VA, m. 15 Feb 1819 in Monroe Co. (now WV) to Mary "Polly" JONES. Solomon was enum. 1820 in Giles Co. VA with household 100100-00100, living next door (or at least nearby) a John THOMAS who may be his father. He was enum. 1830 in Monroe Co. with household 220001-10001, living near a Benjamin THOMAS who might also be his uncle. He was enum. 1840 in Greenbrier Co. (now WV) with household 01111001-121001, again living near an older John THOMAS. He was enum. in Greenbrier in 1850 with wife Mary and ten children, again in 1860 with wife Mary and four children, and again in 1870 with wife Mary, one dau., and four grandchildren. Solomon appears to have d. 1870-1880 near Fort Spring, Greenbrier Co. WV.

Only eight of Solomon's 13 children can be identified: Joseph, Thomas, Sarah, Julia, Margaret, Ruth, Cornelius, and Ellen. The Samuel THOMAS enum. 1880 in Fort Spring is prob. Solomon's grandson.

I will be grateful for any information or leads the will shed new light on this family. I am of course happy to share my files with any interested researcher.

Lorena Elizabeth Richmond Sears was my great-great-grandmother, wife of William Augustus "Gus" Sears (1850-1931). I have seen reference to a picture that exists of her but have been unable to obtain a copy. Is anyone aware of any pictures that may be available of either of these two people? They both died in Greenbrier County where they lived as early as 1920.

My son is doing a school project on the Roy Blankenship House in Frankford. I know that the property was deeded to his father in about 1915. What I would like to know is, if the house was on the property or if his father built the house around that time. Also if there are any older pictures of the house that some one could let us have.
I also know that Walter "Roy" Blankenship was a Justice of the Peace for Greenbrier County and that he also served in the WV Legislature 1961-1962. A small book the he wrote entitled "I Plucked the Horse Feathers" was found in the house.

Researching the Waltons of Greenbrier Co from approx. 1782 to present day. Orginial settler in Greenbrier was John Walton who took 200 acres of land on Indian and Culbertson Creek in 1782. James's Family lived on Spring Creek near its entrance to Greenbrier River and intermarried with the Hannas, Blakes, Ocheltrees, McClungs,
Kellisons, Manns, Perkins, Caudles, Browns, Holcombs, McMillions, Pattons, Thomass, Vaughn, etals.. Have much information, but am interested in gathering more. Will correspond with anyone interested in deeping my data base.

I was wondering if any one out there could tell me if there is more information on Hamilton G. Brown's father and grandfather William Brown. In the biograpgy it states the William Brown was captian of General Lafayette's body guard in the Revolutionary War. Does anyone know where i can find William Brown's war records? I want to find out about William Fleming and Jane Barns who are listed (one beneath the other) in the 1782 tax list under James Henderson's district. How do I go about getting land records of these two? I want to find out the relationship between them. Are they brother and sister? Father and Daughter? I know and have proof that Jane Barns (married Ozias Barns) was Jane Fleming. She later was the wife of Aaron Turpin. At the time of this tax list, Ozias had died and she was a widow. I don't know if she moved next to William Fleming or if that is where they originally lived. Can you think of a way to go with these facts? I am wondering if this is an accurate representation of the early Episcipal Church.I have a source that says that was the state church in Virginia until 1786. Supposedly, all children, regardlss of religious affiiation were required to be baptised by ministers of that church. This resulted in a fairly good record of family records.

I would appreciate hearing from someone that can give me more information about the availability of records & the possiblity of a lookup.

I am trying to find the name of the mother of Hubert L WADE, born in Greenbrier Co, WV May 1924 (my grandfather).

Here's my connundrum...His father Lawrence Oliver WADE never married. In 1930 census, Hubert lived with his father Lawrence WADE, aunt Hattie WADE, and grandparents John & Georgia WADE. Later goes by Hubert FERTIG, last name of the husband/ex-husband of his aunt Hattie WADE. I am guessing that when aunt Hattie WADE m. Herbert FERTIG on 2/5/1905, they adopted Hubert and gave him the FERTIG name?? Cannot find birth cert for Hubert WADE or FERTIG (1924) with a name of his mother. She may be Native American. Is it possible there would be no record? I need the name of Hubert WADE or FERTIG's mother. Thanks for any help in this mystery.

Looking for info on Hudson Lawrence. He was born 22 June 1880 in Bath County, Va and died 5 Jan 1939 in Lewisburg, WV. The death certificate says he was buried in Frankford and his wife was Amelia Via. Does anyone have any additional info on this guy? I would like to at least find out which cemetery he is in so that I can see if any other relatives are there. I am hoping to find out where his mother is buried. Many of his siblings are in Greenbrier, Bath Co, Va, Allegheny Co, Va and Augusta Co, Va.

Looking for info on Joseph Holley, born about 1790 in the Greenbrier area, and his parents William Holley and Ann Prudence (Purdy) Casteel. William and Ann were married in 1786 by Rev. John Alderson. They had another son Frances Holley, born about 1792, who later married Mary/Polly Wells. May have had another son named William.

Joseph Holley moved to Kanawha county with his father, bought land, married Jane(Perry?), had 6-8 children including my ancestor William Perry Holly. He outlived Jane and later married Melinda Elizabeth Tackett in 1858 and had at least 3 more children.

I believe William Holley died about 1815-1820, and his wife married someone named Brown. She moved to Ohio and died in Blanchester in 1856.

According to John Frank Brown's death record (2 Sept. 1897) his father was William L. Brown, who married Nancy Rodgers in 1823. All three are in the household of William L. Brown in the 1850 census (age given as 49), but William and Nancy disappear by the 1860 census, at which time John is living in the household of John W. Brown.

A William L. Brown is named as son in the 1850 will of Samuel Brown, Greenbrier.

John and Hannah (or Jane) Miller: Augusta to Greenbrier: confirmation of children

I believe my Jane Miller who married John Wallace May 11, 1780 in Greenbrier County (marriage peformed by Rev. Alderson) was the youngest daughter of a John Miller who married Jane or Hannah Delaney/Dulaney. My Jane Miller would have been born about 1758/9. Her husband was John Wallace b. 1748, Augusta (then--now Rockbridge County) near "Forks of the James" (what became Lexington) son of Peter Wallace and Martha Woods. They owned about 500 acres around Whistle Creek and the James River, adjacent to his mother's and wife's kinsmen (Woods and Campbells and their in-laws). John and his oldest brother Samuel were the only 2 Wallaces of their twig to survive the Revolution--Samuel was wounded, however, and died soon after the end of the Revolution in 1785. John Wallace did not stay in Greenbrier but went on to Anderson County, TN (down the Clinch River trails), and inherited bounty lands in Kentucky from his deceased brothers (died in the Revolution). He then acquired lands late in life in Indiana and died there April 4, 1832. His wife, Jane, was struck by lightning while crossing a field with a gift of cloth for a neighbor in Anderson County, Tennessee in 1819. The family is sure that Jane had a brother named Brice Miller, and possibly other brothers were named David and Joseph. I descend from the third son, Joseph Franklin Miller Wallace Sr. who eventually went from Tennessee to Nodaway County, Missouri. I'm also sure at this point that Jane was not from the Dunker family of Millers but the Scots-Irish Miller family. Any confirmation supported by documents of this line is greatly appreciated. At least three researchers west of the Mississippi have been puzzling over this one and snatching at bits and pieces that can be supported by documents for over 30 years now. John Wallace is of the "Woods-Wallaces" and was a VA militia man and ranger in the Revolution (was made Ensign--equivalent of 2nd Lt. today). He was an early explorer of and land owner in Greenbrier.
