I am searching for information on Jasper Westfall, b1877, d?. Cannot find information on his natural Mother & Father. He was living with an Isaac Miller in the 1880 census as a 3 yr old boy. Other members of the household were Rebecka J Miller - Wife, 38 yrs old, Wilson Wilfong - Male 12 yrs old, and Sarah Phares - Niece 16 yrs old. Jasper married Pallie Harman (b3 Oct 1876 WV, d11 Mar 1921) 1 Dec 1896 in Garrett City MD. Jasper is reported to have left Pallie when she was pregnant with their son Don, around 1907/1908. There are many unsubstantiated reports about Jasper. One being that he was in a mental hospital after 1910, another that he divorced Pallie and married another woman. He was reported in Gassaway WV & Richmond (WV? or VA?) at different times.
Any help is greatly appreciated.

BAYARD..Mrs. Mary E. Reel, 86, died at her home Sunday.

Born December 18, 1892 in Pickens, she was a daughter of the late Daniel M. Tenney and Mrs. Agnes E. (Hicks) Tenney. She was preceded in death by her husband, Sherman T. Reel.

Mrs. Reel was a member of the Bayard United Methodist Church.

Surviving are two daughters, Mrs. Eunice Guthrie and Mrs. Flossie Gortner, both of Bayard; two sisters, Mrs. Emma Wentz, Glendale, Ariz.; Mrs. Myrtle Booth, Elkins; six grandchildren, eight great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild.

Services will be conducted in the Stewart Funeral Home, Oakland, today at 1 p.m. by the Rev. Ray Rodehaver. Interment will be in Bayard Cemetery.

I am looking for information on any Moyer or Moyers in Hardy County. I have traced my family back to Jeremiah S Moyer(s). He was born June 0f 1852 in what would become West Virginia. He married Mary J Lockerd in Grant County September 19, 1875. He is on the 1860 census with Samuel and Rebecca Moyers in District 2 of Hardy County. I can not find Samuel Moyers married to Rebecca in the 1850 Census, but Rebecca is listed as having a daughter born about 1832 in the 1880 Census. Please, if anyone can help clear up the confusion. Thelma M. Keplinger, 63 of 283 Poplar Drive, Keyser, WV, died Thursday, Mar. 5, 1998, at the Potomac Valley Hospital, Keyser, WV.

Born Sept. 17, 1934 in Grant County, WV, she was the daughter of Leatha V. (Smith) McNemar, Keyser, and the late Henry J. McNemar. She was also preceded in death by a granddaughter, Samantha Ellen Keplinger who died Feb. 27, 1998.

Mrs. Keplinger attended the Piedmont Pentecostal Holiness Church, Piedmont, WV.

Surviving besides her mother are her husband, Ernest E. Keplinger, three sons, Steven Burgess and wife Marie, Richmond, VA, David Keplinger, Keyser, and Joseph Keplinger and wife Tammy, Norfolk, VA; four daughters, Lisa Long and husband Richard, Keyser, Debra Hambleton and husband David, Keyser, Melissa Love and husband Brian, Ridgeley, WV and Linda Dennis and husband James, Peanut, of Keyser; one brother Eugene McNemar, Burlington, WV, one sister Freda Becky Fertig, Kearneysville, WV; and 9 grandchildren.

Funeral services will be conducted in the Rotruck Smith Funeral Home Chapel on Saturday, Mar. 7 at 11 a.m. with the Rev. Tom Brackett officiating.

Friends will be received at the funeral home today from 204 and 7-9 p.m.

Interment will be in Knobley Memorial Gardens, New Creek, WV

Born Sept. 1, 1918 in Grant County, he was the son of the late John M. Swick and Stella (Iman) Swick.

Mr. Swick was employed at the old Petersburg Tannery for 35 years.

He is survived by his widow, the former Ruth Hall; one son, Ronald J. Swick, Myersville, Md.; three daughters, Mrs. Susan Hartman, Short Gap, Mrs. Eileen Riggleman, Mount Airy, Md., and Mrs. Shirley Freeland, Petersburg; four sisters, Mrs. Evelyn Wratchford and Mrs. LeAnna Crawford, both of Petersburg, Mrs. Irenes Nelson, Short Gap and Mrs. Kathleen Elza, Cicleville; 14 grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.

Funeral services were held Sunday afternoon at the Schaeffer Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. James R. T. Boyce and the Rev. John Goldizen officiating. Interment was in the Newhouse Cemetery.

The family suggests that expressions of sympathy take the form of donations to the Heart Fund or to the donor's favorite charity.

Susan and Christopher lived in Grant Co and had the following children:
Margaret J, Emma S, Ida E, Nancy C, Anrebecca, Provey, Hettie, Bertie and Bertha.

Christopher and Susan left Grant Co and moved to Idado for 2-3 yrs, this is where Susan died but Christopher came back to Grant Co and lived there until his death in 1928.

William C. Smith (1823-1900) Married Catherine (Link?)

am at an almost dead end trying to find the ancestors of William C. Smith who married (I am fairly certain) Catherine Link. Catherine was the daughter of Abraham Link and Elizabeth Funkhouser. They settled in the area now known as Arkansaw. They had a number of children including Amos, Ephraim, Angus, William Calhoun, Victoria, John, Abraham.

Catherine's ancestry (Links and Funkhousers) is well documented, but WIlliam's is a mystery. In the 1850 census they are already married and have one child (John). At that point William lists his occupation as a carpenter, and I have other records indicating where they lived, what he did etc.

He may have possibly lived in Shenandoah County, Virginia and traveled to Hardy County with the Links and Funkhouser families...a guess. I have not been able to locate a marriage bond or record yet.

Any information or leads to his ancestry would be greatly appreciated.

I am researching the family and descendants of Cora Mississippi Smith and her husband Joel David Miller. They had 7 daughters: Mattie "Pearl" m. John Henry "Jack" Beyers; Sylvia "Sib" m. Geo. Higgins, m2. Wm. Horn; Fannie m. Mack Crisswell; Treasy m. Mr. Bolds, m2. Wallie Bittorf; Viola "Vi" m. Virgil Keplinger; Margie; and Dorthy Youvet m. James Cash.; and 2 sons: Edgar died when 2 days old and Oscar m. Mable Hanlin. The BITTORF family lived in the Petersburg/Maysville area. The SMITH family lived in Hardy Co., but I think that Cora M. Smith Miller after being widowed, lived and died in Grant co. She died 5 Jan 1948. I would love to have her obit. She was the daughter of James "David" Smith and Sarah E. ?. If anyone knows her mother's maiden name, I would love to konw it. Cora's sister, Nora, married William E. Wolfe, their daughter Alice, married a Kessel. Any help with this family will be appreciated. My grandparents and father (who was the link to all of these people) are all dead, so I have no one to ask. John's son, Leander Reel, died in the Netherlands during WWII and it seems that his mother was the first wife of John. [John's second wife was Lottie Alt.]

Mrs. Virginia Alice Swick, 91, of Petersburg, died Monday, Feb. 28, at the home of a son, Ralph Lipscomb, Purgitsville

A native of Rockingham County, Va., she was a daughter of the late Jack Ratliff and Sally (Mongold) Ratliff. She was married twice. Her first husband, Seymour Lipscomb, preceded her in death.

She was preceded in death by two sons, two sisters and two brothers.

She was a member of the Petersburg Church of God.

Surviving are her second husband, Noah Swick; two other sons, Elwood Lipscomb, Baltimore, Md. and David Lipscomb, Petersburg; three sisters, Mrs. Sarah Hevener, Mrs. Cora Barb and Mrs. Bertha Smith, all of Moorefield; one daughter, Evelyn Lahman, Kessel; 19 grandchildren, 32 great-grandchildren and 5 great-great-grandchildren.

Francis is in Hardy Co. 1880. I would like to find a death record for Elizabeth. Hiram married Susan Lloyd, Grant Co. and had son Chas. I really don't know what happened to them after that. There is a Hiram only in Mineral Co. in 1900.
Samuel died in Grant Co. 1890s apparently alone. Did he ever marry? What happened to the rest of them?? Any help appreciated.

Rosa B. Heavner, 84, of Maysville, died at Grant Memorial Hospital on Friday, October 4.

Born in Grant County November 10, 1900, she was the daughter of the late John Christian Goldizen and Anna (Riggleman) Goldizen.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Walter Isaac Heavner on Sept. 7,1975; one son, four brothers, seven sisters, three grandchildren and one great-grandson.

Surviving are two sons, Rosco Heavner, Scherr and Leo Heavner, Sardis, Ohio; three daughters, Mary Carr and Cleta Goldizen, Maysville and Leatha Mongold, Woodbridge, Va.; 18 grandchildren; 35 great-grandchildren and three great-grat-grandchildren.

She was the last member of her immediate family.

Funeral services were held at the Jordan Run Union Church on Sunday. October 6 with the Rev. Paul Donaldson and the Rev. Greg Rotruck officiating. Interment was in the Riggleman Cemetery at Cabins.

The family requests that memorials be made to the Grant Memorial Hospital.

Schaeffer Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

Roy C. Crites, 65,Martinsburg, died Monday at the Veterans Administration Hospital there following an extended illness.

Born July 6, 1918 in Grant County, he was a son of Roy E. Crites, Dorcas, and the late Lucy (Burgess) Crites.

Mr. Crites was an Army veteran of World War II.

Surviving besides his father are a daughter, Mrs. Lois Higgs, Upper Marlboro, Md.; a son, Roy C. Crites, Jr., Capitol Heights, Md.; 11 grandchildren and two great-grandchildren; five sisters, Mrs. Viola Miller, Keyser; Mrs. Janet Keplinger, Manassas, Va.; Mrs. Sudie Rinker, Purgitsville; Miss Mary Crites, Dorcas; Mrs. Emogene Hinkle, Mt. Storm; four brothers, Glenville Crites and Victor Crites both of Dorcas; Leon Crites, West Palm Beach, Fla.; Willis Crites, Harrisonburg, Va.

A memorial service will be held today (Wednesday) at 2 pm at the Arnold-Basagic Funeral Home by Brother Merrill Kopp.

The body will be cremated.

The family suggests that memorials take the form of donations to the Grant County Cencer Fund.

Farming out children in WV

My husband's father and his aunts and uncles were "farmed out" to other families after their father died in 1908. Does anyone know anything about "farming out?" Anyone know where I could look for info to find out which families they went to ? They were not "adopted", just went to another family for awhile and worked for them for room and board. I hear this was quite common. The census is no help since the children were all back together by the next census. This was in Wilson, WV, Grant county. Thanks for any help. the store was on one side of the creek and there was a restaurant on the other side in gorman from what i can remember..

My husband's father attended school in one of these schools but do not know which one. He lived in Wilson,WV or at least his family got their mail there. Is there anyone with any info of this kind? Mrs. Myrtle M. Mongold, 90, of Dorcas died Tuesday , April 90, at Winchester (Va.) Medical Center.

Born at Mozer May 4, 1894, she was a daughter of the late Adam H. Riggleman and Cynthia Susan (Kesner) Riggleman. She was also preceded in death by her husband, Hubert C, Mongold, who died July 8, 1974.

Mrs. Mongold was amember of the Grace Lutheran Church, Petersburg.

Surviving are two sons, William R. Mongold and John A. Mongold, both of Dorcas; four daughters, Evelyn Shobe and Wilma Rodgers, both of Petersburg, Garnet Burley, VanWert, Ohio, Sue Schmuck, Mt. Ida, Ark.; two brothers, George Riggleman and Jasper Riggleman, both of Cabins; eight grandchildren and 16 great-grandchildren.

Funeral services were held Friday morning at the Schaeffer Funeral Home chapel with the Rev. Theodore M. Schulz officiating. Burial was in South Branch Memorial Gardens.

The family requests memorials be made to the Grace Lutheran Church or a charity of the donor's choice.

Born Jan 28, 1934 in Grant County, she was a daughter of Mrs. Ardelia (Mongold) Swick, Petersburg, and the late Homer Swick.

Mrs. Williams had resided in Moorefield for many years and was employed at the local Heck's Inc. store. She was member of the Moorefield Presbyterian Church. She was a 1952 graduate of Petersburg High School and attended Strayer Business College, Washington, D.C. She was a former employee at the Rigg's National Bank of Washington, D.C.

Besides her mother, she is survived by her husband, Charles E. Williams, Jr.; one son, Charles E. Williams III, at home; one daughter, Mrs. Cheryl W. Wilson, Moorefield; four brothers, Robert Swick and Roger Swick, both of Petersburg, John Swick, Moorefield; James Swick, Keyser; five sisters, Mrs. Virgina Phillips and Mrs. Helen Hartman, both of Petersburg, Mrs. Kathleen Roomsburg, Moorefield, Mrs.
Rose Turner, Ypsilanti, Mich., Mrs. Lucy Martin, Springfield, Va., and one grandson.

Services were conducted Sunday, April 14 at the Moorefield Presbyterian Church by Pastor Bruce A. Macbeth. Interment was in the Olivet Cemetery.

Pallbearers were: Mike Alt, Randy Dyke, Kevin Heare, Roger J. Lambert, Mark Roomsburg and Steve Hardy.

I am looking for any information on one Samuel HILL b. abt 1874 (give or take, i am not really sure). He married Harriett Creighton SHAFFER in abt 1891. Harriett was born in Garrett County, MD. I am not sure where Samuel was born.

They had two children:

1) Elva Creighton HILL b. 10/29/1892 d. 6/1/1982 m. Eli Oliver Roy ZIMMERMAN (she was born, died and married in Garrett County, MD)

2) Mamie Marie HILL b. abt 12/1893

I believe that Samuel was killed by a train in 1895, but I am not sure. Any information would be greatly appreciated.

Mrs. Dollie Ethel Evans, 86, died Wednesday, January 23, at her home in Maysville.

She was born in Grant County Nov. 24, 1898, daughter of the late Kenton Arbogast and Sarah (Rohrbaugh) Arbogast.

Mrs. Evans was a member of Jordan Run Union Church of the Brethren. Her husband, Evers J. Evans, died June 20, 1961.

Surviving are five sons, Gene P Evans, Leo E. Evans and Glenn K. Evans, all of Maysville; Emil N. Evans, London, Ohio; Colin L. Evans, Rig; one daughter Ica Teter, Maysville; 15 grandchildren and 19 great-grandchildren.

Services were conducted yesterday at the Jordan Run Union Church of the Brethren by the Rev. Greg Rotruck and the Rev. Paul Donaldson. Interment was in the Evans family cemetery in Maysville.

Arrangements were under the direction of the Schaeffer Funeral Home.

My hope is to find the parents of William and Mary Schell McDonald. I believe that William may be either a brother or an uncle to the Anthony McDonald family in Pendleton County WV as Anthony at one time lived in the Williamsport area.

I am specifically interested in a Peter Kuykendall who owned land there in 1757 and also in a Peter Kuykendall (possibly his son or one and the same) who purchased land from Adam Weese in 1780 and from Jacob Weese in 1797 (along with a Henry Rohrbaugh). Looking for any relatives of John S. Bond, William H. Bond, Sarah Tingler Kimble. John Bond is supposed to have been born in PA but lived in Grant/Pendleton area prior to and during the Civil War. William H. may have been a brother and/or nephew. Sarah Tingler Kimble married Jacob Markwood Kimble and was my great grandmother. Will share information.

I am looking for a copy of the 1920 Grant County census or if someone knows if a Vandiver (Vandever) Kelly Darrah (Derrow, Derrah) is listed in it. I have heard rumor that some time after 1917 he "disappeared" from his home and no body has been able to locate information on him as of yet.

Mrs. Ada L. Likens 75 Of Williamsport, WV died Thursday at Kings Daughters Hospital in Martinsburg. She had been residing with her daughter, Mrs. Norma Bartles, of Martinsburg.

Born Williamsport, WV she was the daughter of David C. Lyons and Cora E(Snyder) Lyons. She was preceded in death by her husband, Robert Earl Likens, in November of 1979.

Surviving in addition to Mrs. Bartles is another daughter, Miss Betty Lou Likens of Baltimore, Maryland: two sisters, Mrs. Louis Cassady, here, Mrs. Mary Legore of York, PA; two brothers, Malcolm Lyons, Lahmansville, Baker Lyons of New Creek and three grandchildren.

Friends will be received today from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. at the Schaeffer Funeral Home, Petersburg.

Services will be conducted tomorrow at 2 p.m. in the Harness Run church of the Brethren with the Rev. Carole Cosner officiating. Interment will be in Lahmansville Cemetery.

ROBEY/GRAY-Seeking information on Abraham Robey. He was born in Virginia around 1797. The only records we found about him was the 1850 and 1860 census records of Hampshire Co., Va. In 1850 he was in a household with Sarah Gray and his son Albert Robey, b. 1849. In the 1860 census Abraham Robey is alone with his son Albert. Have not been able to locate him before 1850 or after 1860. Also, we have not found any gravesite for him or Sarah Gray. Any information would be appreciated.

John T. and Mary Shoemaker married 1881 lived in Grant Co WV

Seeking information on the family of John T. and Mary M. Shoemaker. They were living in Union and Bayard in the 1910 and 1920 census of Grant Co., VA. John is the son of Granville and Sarah Shoemaker.

They had four children, but I only know of Bessie R. born abt 1893 from 1910 census.

Looking for information on Robert W. Jack and Sarah E. Idleman who married about 1873. They had two children Samuel M. Jack who married Alice ____. Their known children are Arlene, Raymond and Vauda Jack. Robert's other known son is Authur Jack born abt 1877.
