Harris of Doddridge and nearby counties in West Virginia

While tracking my grandfather, mother's side, I came across some problems on Ancestry.com in regards to people not paying attention to the fact brothers/siblings can't be born four months apart. I believe that three familes were merged into one as a result. Perhaps someone can add to the far end of this list: Charles Braxton Harris (b. Doddridge WV, d. Columbus, OH), his father John Henery Harris 1832 Monongalia-1925 Dodridge counties, his dad John Asa 1807-1887 Doddridge WV, his father Asa Harris Jr. 1767 Shrewsbury, Mass - 1835 Doddridge (W) Virginia, his father Asa Sr. 1730 - ? Shrewsbury, Mass. At that point someone has lead Ancestry.com to believe that Asa was born four months after a brother born in a location 12 miles east followed by another sibling born 15 miles west, etc. I do believe that Asa Sr. is an ancestor of Charles B. Harris and would like to find more info on the parents of Asa Sr. Thanks. (Contact me if the above is confusing but rings a bell, please!)

Some clues for you:

According to daughter Carrie's birth record, Gertrude was born in Ritchie County in about 1881. The WV Births Index indicates Gertrude Wilson's birth as 1880 in Ritchie, parents & exact date not given.

On 22 Oct 1921, Carrie Smith married Lawrence E. Underwood in Doddridge County. Informant for the marriage license was Gertrude Wallordt.
http://www.wvculture.org/vrr/va_view.aspx?Id=11796178&Ty...

The "Wallordt" spelling is questionable. I found no subsequent reference to Gertrude by that or any similar name. Carrie & Lawrence Underwood are found in Allegheny County, Pennsylvania, in the 1930 and 1940 Census. I lost track of her brothers Leo (Glenn) and Russel after the 1920 Census.

If you ever get this figured out, please let us know!

Rennie Brown
West Union, WV

Courtesy lookup - not my family.

I found a strong possible marriage (and the only one with theses surnames) in Doddridge County:

Gertrude WILSON, age 21, single, born Pennsboro, Richie Co., WV, married 21 Nov 1900, Doddridge, H. E. SMITH, widower, age 35.

The SMITH name is slightly off, but the ages, her name and being Doddridge Co, where they resided, it's probably your ancestors.

Getrude "Gertie" WILSON birthdate and parents could be:

Gertrude WILSON, born Ritchie, 19 Aug 1880, father Abraham and mother Margaret. I also found her children's births, Leo Glenn in 1903 (Gertie stated she was 27, so born abt. 1876) and Carrie in 1905 (Gertie stated she was 24, born abt. 1881). So, Aug 1880 is in the middle of that 1876-1881 time span.

Hope this helps!

I tried to reply but my message came back undeliverable. I wanted to chat with you! Where are you in the davis line? My father was Everett Davis. He had 3 brothers Orin, Bernard, and Clyde, 2 ended up in Kansas and 2 in Baltimore. Their parents were Ora Davis and Vonda Beverlin....any of those names ring any bells!!
I contacted the historical sociaty about helping me locate one of those books that I could buy or borrow, they are still looking. I want to learn about the whole Davis family.

I have been searching for my grandad's family for a while now. My mom never knew them because she was so young when my grandad died. My mom said that she also remembers while visiting her grandma Starkey, she remembers someone with only one arm. She doesn't know who it was or even if it was a family member. Do you know?

That is correct, my grandfather was a paratrooper and was killed during that battle according to the records. His death was classified as FOD (finding of death) which means he was presumed dead. He has a grave marker in Belgium. James Kittle married Edith Jarmans (my grandmother) and had one daughter, Shirley Kittle, my mother. My mom was only one year old when my grandad was killed.

We went to Baltimore (I think) at night once but did not go in to see the people who lived there, stayed in car while Daddy went in to visit. I always thought it was to see his brother Lawrence. I think we do have a match. I live in Atlanta, my sister lives near here as well. I will call when I can get a minute...this is really something, I never knew his brother was married or had children. Ypu're right, your mother and I would be first cousins. I am Sharon and my sister is Christina Evette. Daddy always said that Christina was an old family name and I saw a Christina in one of the links I found. Your mother also has several Kittle cousins in WVA.

My father (John A. Kittle) was born in 1925 died 2005. Cannot find my baby book for his father's name. I think his father died in 1928 or so. Had three brothers that I remember being mentioned. Eldest was killed in Battle of the Bulge (James?, was a paratrooper and body was never found according to my Dad. Also Lawrence and Lige. Lawrence and Daddy served in the South Pacific, unsure where Lige served but they were all in WWII. Sister was Mary, possibly the eldest. If it is the same brother (James) I never heard that he was married or had children. My aunt Ruth (lives in WVA) and may remember. I do know Grandma Kittle had to give her children away, could not raise them after her husband died. Only one given back was my father because he was a toddler and cried too much. She then worked for a family, perhaps as a housekeeper and married Virgil.

I will check my grandfather's birth certificate when I get home tonight, but I beleive my great grandfather's name was John A Kittle. My grandfather was James Daniel Kittle, born 1920 and killed in WW2 in 1944 at the Battle of the Bulge. My mom's maiden name is Shirley Marie Kittle. Her parents (my grandparents) were from Randolph WV. My great grandmother's maiden name was Rebecca Cade (married John Kittle). I live in Front Royal, VA. My mom lives in Warrenton, VA. If we are related, you and my mom would be 1st cousins and you would be my second cousin.

Father was John Addison Kittle. Cannot remember grandfather's name, died when father was very young (1928?). Will check baby book for ....His oldest brother was killed in WWII, Battle of the Bulge - cannot remember but James sounds familiar. Who was your mother, how related and where are you located? My father passed away in 2005, has one sister still alive...was half sister to Daddy and siblings by Kittle.

Do you have Susie Davis Nicholson's book "Davis - The Settlers of Salem, WV"? Sounds like that would answer a lot of your questions. If you can't find a used one at a reasonable price, I've heard that a reprinting was done. The Harrison County Historical Society could steer you to where to find it.

In the meantime, you might find this to be of interest...
Family of Benjamin Franklin Davis & Easter Hutson:
http://www.doddridgecountyroots.com/bk6html/f22528.html

Good luck!
RB
Courtesy lookup - not my family.

This was tough! I only found one family member:

WV Culture Vitals Index says "Mrs. Addie PHILLIPS", died 24 Jan 1918, Center Point, Harrison Co., (not Doddridge, apparently) WV, wife of LW (that would be Lewis Willis) PHILLIPS. She was aged 53 years, & died of Paralysis.

You have already seen the tombstones at FindAGrave? They have vital record dates. Ada "Addie" L. SMOYLER, born 20 July 1864, Foxbury, Clarion, PA married 1880 Lewis Willis PHILLIPS, born May 1858.

In case you do not have? - After Addie's 1918 death, LW married for the
second time, 12 June 1927, Harrison Co., WV, Maude Blanche GULLEY, a widow.

Hope this helps?
Laura

The West Union Odd Fellows (or IOOF) Cemetery was one of three cemeteries incorporated into what is now known as Blockhouse Hill Cemetery. The three sections (IOOF, Catholic, 7th Day Baptist) are not labeled as such, but are discernible to the eye if you look carefully. Here's an account of how this all came about:
http://www.westunion-wv.com/history/blockhouse.htm
