I finally have a bit of time to work on my daughters line. Robert was born about 1877 in Webster County,WV. He married Matilda Forinash in 1899 in Braxton County, WV. Robert had 2 brothers we know of, Jim & John. We were told that Robert drowned in Queen Shoals in 1918.This is my daughters 2nd great grandfather so we'd like to know more about him.

I am looking for information on Mary Francis (or Franile) Moore (1875 or 1901 - 1952) she married George Henry Brown.(1864-1951 buried in Sunset Cemetary in Bickmore) (George was also married to Fondia Jerrett, and they had a daughter Wanda).

Mary & George had the following children, Vada Dal, Lessel, Jim, that I know of. I believe Jim is still living in Clay, he married a Bertha Bishop. Lessel died in NY, he had married Mildred ? and Vada died In Ohio in 1975 and she was married to Earnest Koch d. 1995.

Marys parents were Ike or Isaac? and Nancy. All were from Clay Co area.
George's father was Herbert Brown. No information on his mother.

She was murderd in the Booger Hole crime spree of the early 1900s.

She is my GGgrandmother, and I have no actual death date for her murder.

My tree has stopped in Clay County and needs a boost. I'm a beginner and putting it together for my siblings. None of us have been back to Clay since John Moore's funeral, but we did get a booklet from Danieth Daniels Teachey Frizzell.
I'm looking for birth&death dates on both sides. Melvin Moore married Betty Kincaid and were parents to g.grandpa Howard and g.uncle John. I know nothing else about Melvin &Betty. On the other side, I've got the names for the Williams family, father Shurmon/Sherman Williams mother Liza E/Lizia Adkins/Atkins and dates for grandma Ellen and greataunts Zena &Dorothy, but that's as far as we know. Yeah, it's a little greedy for info, but the boost would be appreciated.

We are looking for the descendants of Marcellus and Chantilla (Stump) Hardman. Marcellus was the son of George W. Sr. and Rachel R. (Goff) Hardman. He was born in Gilmer (now Calhoun) on Mar. 20, 1848. Marcellus married Chantilla Malvern (Stump) on Dec. 6, 1881. Marcellus and Chantilla had two known children; Paul Hardman and Frank Russell Hardman. Frank died at three days old.
Paul Hardman was born Feb 22, 1886 and married Lula Chapin on Feb. 10, 1910. Paul's known descendant's are;

Paul Hardman was once a member of the House of Delagates and resided in Clay county in the Hallburg area, I believe, until his death. He also wrote a well known book on the Hardman history.
Marcellus Hardman was a farmer, stockman, and timberman. I've seen a story stating that he and two of his brothers timbered a 10,000 acre tract in Clay county in the late 1800's. Marcellus lived his adult life in Roane county and his wife Chantilla died there in 1905 (HAVE PHOTO). We have info that Marcellus lived his last years with his son Paul, in the Hallburg area of Clay county. I believe he died there on Aug. 17, 1932, and was taken back to the original homestead in Calhoun where he was buried.
Anyone with info on his descendants, PLEASE CONTACT US. We are attempting to assemble photos of this entire family. We currently have photos of George W. Sr. (died 1890), Rachel (died 1885), children - Sylvester (died 1905), Dorcas (died 1894), Cassett (died 1925), George W. Jr. (died 1929), Orlando (died 1917), Laverna (died 1922), Jerome (died 1931), Allen (died 1940). The two youngest children, twins Warren and Floyd, died at six months in 1859, and I don't believe there are photos of them. The only children we are missing photos of are MARCELLUS and COLUMBUS!! I know these photos are out there somewhere, if we can just find them.

John B. Gray and Rosanna Ewing

John B. Gray and his wife, Rosanna are my 3GGparents. For many years, I've been told that Rosanna's maiden name was Ewing but I could find no proof. I think I may now have the proof I've been looking for. In the 1850 Braxton County, (W)VA Census, the Grays are living next door to the Ewings. I searched death records for Ewing in Braxton County and came upon the following entry:

Margaret Ewing d. July 28,1855, born in Monroe County. She was 61y7m13d old when she died making her birthdate December 15, 1793. Her parents are listed as William and Virginia Brown. The informant for this death information is John B. Gray and relationship to deceased is Son-in-Law.

I have seen references from other researchers where they say, "Rosanna was rumored to be a Ewing". I think the above information constitutes pretty good proof that she was indeed a Ewing.

I am descended from John and Rosanna's daughter, Sarah Margaret Gray (might Sarah's middle name be that of her grandmother?)

Does anyone have any more info about the Ewings and/or the Browns? Any information would be much appreciated.

I have finally tracked some of my lines to Clay County and am looking for information on A.J. Chapman and Nancy Kezia Hall. Their son was Robert Martin Chapman/m. Rebecca S.A. Myers. Robert and Rebecca were my great-grandparents.
I'm also looking for a connection with William Cart and my ancestor Conrad Cart. Were they brothers? Some oyther names in this line are Coonrod, Levi, Uriah etc.
Youngs are through John and Keziah Tackett Townsend Young. They are my direct line as is Richard Ashley who married into this family. And Elizabeth Young who married Thomas Smith is mine also. I am looking for any information on Jim Mullins born around 1878. He was married to Amanda M Brown who was the daughter of Harriet Ann Dilley and Charles Brown. Harriet Dilley was the daughter of Isaac Dilley and Rachel Murphy. Jim Mullins is listed on the 1920 census as the head of household with Amanda as his wife but on the 1930 census Amanda is the head of household and she is listed as a widow. I am trying to find a death record for Rachel (ESTEP) Underwood who died close to 1911 in, I believe, Clay County. I know she lived there in May, 1910 with Millard Filmore Belcher and his family. I have visited Pleasant Hill Cemetary at Wallback and found the grave of MFB and his 2nd wife, Laura Collison. Would also appreciate it if someone could check for Rachel's husband, John Underwood, who is supposed to have died in Roane County in 1872. His death record or grave has never been found. Maybe he died in Clay County istead??

She first married an AH Perskin (no first name know), possibly in Braxton Co., WV. He was born 28 Aug 1890 in Braxton and died 15 Nov 1930 in Buckhannon, Upshur Co., WV. Only his mother's name wa slisted on his DC, stating Virginia Knicely.

No other information is known about Margaret Sears/Siers or AH Perkins.

Looking for Woody's Family

I've just begun to search my husbands family. His father was Woodrow Jones, Grandfather Thomas Jones.
Mother was Lorraine Mullens, Grandfather Fred Mullens. Grandpa and Grandma Mullens were probably cousins as the last name was the same. I know very little about this family. They were all gone when I came on the scene. Story is that Thomas Jones was a preacher. The Bird family fits in there somewhere. Sorry I have no dates. Lorraine passed away in about 1982, she was born in abt 1921. Woodrow passed away about 1984, probably born before 1920. All are total guesses prior to that. Anything would help.

Seekiggn information on the parents of Margaret Isabell (Isabella) Sears/Siers. She was born 25 Dec 1894 in Clay Co., WV and died 23 Jun 1972in Upshur.

She first married an AH Perskin (no first name know), possibly in Braxton Co., WV. He was born 28 Aug 1890 in Braxton and died 15 Nov 1930 in Buckhannon, Upshur Co., WV. Only his mother's name wa slisted on his DC, stating Virginia Knicely.

No other information is known about Margaret Sears/Siers or AH Perkins.

Harvey Birth Record

Would someone please look up the birth record for Lonidas or Lonidus Harvey born on 17th of September 1883 probably in Clay County? I would like to order the birth certificate but am not sure of where to order it from. He also was known as, Alonzo Everett Harvey (birth name as I was told by his living children), Lonnie E. Harvey (went by that in his later years), Lon and Lonzo in the census pages. This was my grandfather and I am confused by what his actual birth name was and who his mother and father were. He passed away in 1965 in Michigan. I reside in Michigan also, so I am not able to do this part of the research myself.

The name Lonidas Harvey was recorded in the 1900 census, age 16, born Sept. 1883 in WV, Farm Laborer, residing with his grandmother, Julia A. Harvey age 66 and widowed, residing in the Clay County, WV area. Upon further research, Julia A. Harvey was found in the 1880 census for Tap Hill, Raleigh County, WV, the wife of John Harvey, age 50, farmer born in WV. It could be that Lonidas was born in Raleigh County insted of Clay County too. Please help me.

Looking for any info on my g-grandmother, AMANDA ELIZABETH HOUCHIN PARK, who lived in Clay County sometime around 1860-1870 and died there in 1911. She had children named Virginia, James (Dude), Benny, Martha Dicena, Lucy, and Fanny. Some records show the names of children as Park and
others as Paxton.

Also trying to find the maiden name of my grandmother, MARTHA (MATTIE) PARK, who was married to my grandfather,
Abraham Lincoln Park(Paxton). My grandmother died in 1894

Padden Cemetery in Clay Co.

I just returned from Maysel,Clay Co.,W.VA in search of the Padden Cemetery where my grandfather, Cyrus N. BRADDY,b.1872;d.1948 and Estella R. BRADDY,b.1895;d.1968 are buried. According to information found on the Clay Co. cemetery index, the cemetery is located off Blue Knob Rd. in Maysel. We drove quite a ways back on the road, but were unable to find the cemetery. Can anyone give me information where it is located, such as, if it is by a home, whose home would it be etc. The people we talked to in Maysel had not heard of the cemetery.

I am searching for the family of three soldiers who was killed in the Korea War. When they entered service they gave Clay County West Virginia as their home of record.

When the Korean War ended the enemy never returned or accounted for over 8,000 of our servicemen. They died in their hands. That was over 50 years ago. Since that time DNA has been perfected and also they are recovering remains in North Korea. Our government is obligated to return those remains to the proper family. DNA samples have been obtained from most of the families of these missing soldiers. For various reasons some families have not been located. There are 54 families from West Virginia that have not been located. There are three families from Clay County that has not been located.

When the remains are recovered and identified they will be returned to the family for proper burial. I am just an old (76 years) Combat Veteran out of the Korean War and thankful that I did return. I consider this a very noble cause and I hope that you can help in some way to find these families. For more information on the project you may go to http://www.jpac.pacom.mil/. My part in the program is to match up the lost families with the proper agency.

I will be grateful for any assistance in locating these families.

Need specific driving directions to Ramsey Graveyard

Recently found out the 1923 burial location of our g-grandfather, Henry Lawson. One of his 80+ year old grandchildren, our uncle, is preparing for one last trip to WV. Our family (Henry's youngest son) moved to IL in 1930. They had lived near Bentree for about 10 years, having come from KY & VA prior to that.

I can find this cemetery on the Topozone and GNIS website but really could use specific instructions from a local. It looks to me like it is probably in a rural location up in the hills. Imagine that?!

I know it's not far from the Clay-Nicholas Co line and sorta near Swandale.

Uncle planned the trip this summer but then postponed due to the wonderful gas prices we have all seen this year. I am concerned that if he waits until gas goes down, he will never make the trip.

Anyone out there know exactly how to get there? Or any knowledge of the condition of this cemetery? Will they even find anything when they get there? Thanks for any help!

Walls and Brown

My mother's name was Madge Helen Walls and was born in Procious, WV. Her mother was Letha (Brown) Walls and her father was was Charlie Walls.

The only information I have on my Grandfather's (Charlie Walls) parents is that my Great Grandmother's name was Loubaina Louellen Walls (not sure on the spelling of first and middle name, and do not know her maiden name) and my Great Grandfather's name was French Walls. I have no information on my Grandmother's (Letha (Brown) Walls) parents. I do know that my Great Grandmothers, on both sides, were full blooded Native American.

I would like to get as much information that is available on the Walls family name and on the Brown family.

Clay Co Visit

My son and I are coming to Clay Co in April for two days and I would appreciate any information you can help us with. We are traveling 3,000 miles from WA State so it would be wonderful to know where to go and what to do to get the most we can get in 2 days, Friday and Saturday. There are 4 things in particular that we are interested in finding:
1. Can you tell me where the Taylor cemetery is? Our grandparents were buried there in 1950 - Jesse Stillman & Minerva Hayes.
2. Can you tell us where the old Jesse Hayes farm is located outside Harrison (that was his address - Harrison, WV) and who owns it now?
3. Can you tell us anything about the old grist mill that was built by Robert G Hays and his brother Benjamin? The property was owned by Amos Morris in 1951.
4. Jehu Summers was our GGGGrandfather. What can we find there about him? I see some of his children and grandchildren in the Clay County Cemetery titles "Other Clay County Cemeteries". Do you know which cemetery?
I wrote to the CCHS and sent a check for membership back in July 2002. The check was never cashed and I never heard from them. Are they still active?
