James and Rebecca Justice

I am interested in finding information about James Justice and his wife Rebecca Butler. I am mainly interested in James mother Lucinda Justice. There is listed in the Coen Cemetery in the book "Cemeteries of Calhoun County" a Loey Justice 15 Aug 1798 - 25 Oct 1897. James and Rebecca are also buried here. Could Loey be Lucy and the transcriber had a hard time reading the stone? Lucinda (Lucy) could possibly be the mother of John Duncan who was married to Christina Murphy. Would like to share my info to anyone interested. Thanks.

John Lynch married Mary Moore. Everyone agrees. However some show he came from Galway and some from Ulster. Can anyone give me a definite answer? Somewhere, a long time ago, I even read he came from Scotland (which might explain the Ulster).

We are excited to announce the launching of a new MyFamily.com West Virginia related genealogy and historical site.

A sister-site to "Calhoun, Roane, Braxton and Clay County, WV Tombstones" (aka "The Tombstone Site"), "Calhoun, Roane and Wirt Co, WV Cousin Connection" (aka "The Cousin Connection") will focus on genealogical and historical information. Anything of that nature directly connected to our three focus counties will be accepted and welcomed EXCEPT for information pertaining to tombstones, obits, death records transcriptions etc. If you have tombstone photos, obits, anything that documents the death of your ancestors from Calhoun, Roane, Braxton or Clay counties, you'd like to share, we encourage you to post it to "The Tombstone Site." (If you are not already a member there, we hope you'll request an invitation.
A cousin sent me a copy of a tintye with three people in it. A man and two women standing behind him, all unidentified. They resemble several members of our Nelson family.
The owner of the picture is a descendant of Jennie Nelson, d/o David Nelson, s/o Jerry Nelson and Sidney Unknown. A brother would be Amos Nelson. Two sisters, Almeda (O'Neal) and Arkansas Cantrell (Wilson).
David was married to Miranda Richards, d/o Adonijah Richards and Elizabeth Collins.
The clothing seems to be a mix of 1870-1880s styles.

I too inherited a box of unidentified pictures from my Aunt who was born in Calhoun County in 1880. Many are tintypes. It is very frustrating as I don't know if these pictures are of my family or of her husband's family.

Many of them were taken at the People's Gallery. Does anyone have any information on the location of the People's Gallery?

I have some pictures that were found in my grandmothers trunk. My grandmother was Elsie Allen, daughter of Fielden and Almira Bailey Allen of Calhoun County. She was born and raised there.I would think these pictures are of some of her family members or close family friends.None of the pictures have any names written on them.My grandmother has been gone from us for over 20 years now and nobody has bothered to try to identify these pictures. It is too late to find any information in my direct family because all who would of known has passed on.I am hopeing maybe a distant relative or a family friend might be out there who did ask their grandmothers about the old family photos. If anyone can identify these people from other existing family photos or any other source it would be greatly appreciated.I would be glad to share all family info and pictures.God bless!

Ch. of James N. NORMAN (1801-aft.1870), Gilmer/Calhoun Cos.WV

I am looking for proof that James N. Norman and his wife, Catherine Summers, had a daughter named Mary (b. 1831) who married Benjamin Jeffreys of Yellow Creek, Calhoun County, WV.

I have proof the wife of Benjamin Jeffreys was Mary Norman, but I have never independently ever been able to find a record that stated the name of her parents. The names Benjamin Jeffreys and James N. Norman appear together on a number of deeds in Calhoun County, so there seems to be a connection between the two. The history of the Norman family written by Don Norman states that James N. Norman had a daughter named Mary who married Benjamin Jeffreys. I haven't found anything to contradict what Don Norman has written, but neither have I found any primary source that supports it.

When I contacted Mr. Norman, I posed the same question to him and he graciously checked his material. He couldn't find what primary material he used as he didn't have room to store all of it, so wasn't sure.

I am seeking to verify this link in my family tree. I am in no way trying to find fault or be critical of Don Norman's work, but merely verifying it.

I appreciate any clues that anyone can provide. Thanks!

I've had so much success with Ritchie Co that I thought I would try out Calhoun Co. I am planning a trip to WV to do some searching for family. I am looking for several cemeteries in Calhoun Co. -- the Chenoweth Cemetery (NE of Minora); the Chenoweth/Smith Cemetery (Nicut); the Ira Reip Cemetery (home farm) in Washington District; the Poling Church Cemetery (on Sycamore); and a cemetery in or near Euclid where several Reip family members are buried.
The notes in ( ) are from research papers that my deceased aunt had done several years ago. I'm originally from WV, but I'm not so familiar with the side of my family that comes from this area. Guess I should have taken notes when I was young!

Burrows/Harris Families

I am looking for information on Perry Harris the father of my great grandmother Emma Jane Harris Burrows. Emma's mother was Nancy Jane Harris who was married twice. 1st to Henry S. Pritt and second to Charles W. Queen. Neither was Perry Harris ? On Emma's wedding record she gives Perry Harris as her father. I am wondering if she was born out of wedlock. Oral family tradition states that Perry was rumored to be indian and that he and Nancy were married indian style. It is also told that Perry would signal Nancy to meet him by firing his gun near her home. Maybe these stories were told to cover Emma's being born out of wedlock ? She was raised by her grandparents Zack and Molly Harris. I would apprecciate any info to help me solve this family history/mystery. Also are there any photos of any of the above mentioned people floating around.
Am especially looking for photos of John Burrows and his wife Mary and their family and Zack Harris. Also interested in Civil War photos of Burrows ancestors and Zack Harris during the war.

I would especially like to have information on unmarked graves. Many Thanks.

Question Re: the "Old-Old" Bethlehem Baptist Church Cemetery Near Grantsville

My g-g-g-grandfather was Joseph Bennett (1791-1880), who is buried in the cemetery at the Mt. Carmel Baptist Church near Normantown.

I am a descendant of Joseph's son Nathan. We have a hand written family history which states that Nathan's wife Matilda (Ball) and four of their children were drowned, "at the first ford in Steer Creek traveling upstream," on March 19, 1874. The note also says that they were buried at the Bethlehem Baptist Church, which we believe is the one near Grantsville.

I have visited the "old" part of the cemetery at the current site of the Bethlehem Baptist Church, but none of the markers went back to the 1870's. I suspect now that we may not have been at the original site of the church.

I recently ran across a history of the Bethlehem Baptist Church which indicates that the church moved to a new location in 1894. However, it is unclear from that report where the original church was located. Any information regarding the site of the original church and whether there is a cemetery on that site would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you,
According to Revolutionary War Records a cousin recently discovered, the estate of my ggg grandmother, Sarah ? Shepherd was administrated by a James S. Wolverton of Calhoun Co, WV in 1867. She died about 1863. I would appreciate any lookup for obituaries, estate, will, cemetary or related topics which might provide information on Sarah, her maiden name and any ancestors or children. She had previously lived in Ritchie and Gilmer counties if that helps.

I was told I can get a map of the layout and such. Thanks Louise

My grandfather was Cecil Henry Dawson. It is believed that Cecil’s father was W. M. Moneypenny as can be seen hand written on his birth certificate, however I do not have anything that is 100% proof that Willam Moneypenny was Cecil’s father. Cecil is now deceased so all the information I receive is from 2nd hand sources. If anyone has any documented proof it would be greatly appreciated. The birth certificate if “proof” but since his mother’s name was type and the father’s hand-written, it brings in some doubt. Cecil’s sister are: Oma Dawson Bell and Haddie Dawson.

To view the birth certificate, please click the following link: http://yourbeginnings.com/wordpress/?p=5
Can anyone help me clarify my info? On the Calhoun County, WV website under photos and postcards there is a picture contributed by Dan Butler that is listed as Benjamin Butler and wife Levisa. According to what I have been able to find Levisa Justice was married to Thomas Butler, son of Benjamin. Is this picture really Thomas instead? Also, would like to know timeframe of photo and location if known. Dan, I hope you're still monitoring mess. bds. or would love to hear from anyone with info. Thanks

Seeking date of death for Spencer and his wife Ruhanna/Ruanna Jones Beall/Bell. I believe I found them in the 1900 census for Calhoun Co, WVA and he is listed as Martin Bell with his wife listed as Rosanna. The children match up though, so I believe it is him. Someone at Ancestry has him listed as having died in 1879, but if this is him then he was still alive in 1900. Is anyone researching this family???? Thanks for any help!!!

With no luck.

It has been suggested that there is not a birth record for John, due to the fact they did not keep birth records at this time period. And he was born at home. We also were told that we might try looking in other county's. We would love to find out his parents names.
He is buried in White Pine in the Kight Cem. We took a trip (very bad road) up to the cem, and found that no one has ever had his death date engraved on the stone. As his great grand daughter, I would like to see this done. Also, I have a several reatives buried in Hunt Cem and noticed that there were flowers placed on the graves. My thanks to the person who is doing this. One more thing, I also noticed that Elizabeth Stalman, the wife of Franklin Ferrell, has her first husbands surname (Jackson) on her stone, Can anyone shed any light on this. She is buried beside Franklin Ferrell. Thanks. Bev Ferrell Slagle

She was born in Randolph Co, the dau of Isaac and Elizabeth Phillips. Her first husband was John or Jon Smith. After his death, she married Robert Godfrey in Calhoun Co on 27 May 1857. I do not know if she is buried with Robert or her first husband. Any help appreciated.

I am looking for the parentage of Christian Goodnight who married Susanna Barb in Shenedoah Virginia in 1810 - need actual record not just confirmation of marriage. Too many Christians need to prove which one is which. The decendants moved to this county within five years of marriage.

Does anyone know anything about a man named HOLLY DOUGLAS? He was the illegitimate son of my grandfather, Albert Douglas, of Calhoun County. Holly lived with his father and Albert's wife, my grandmother, Ina Douglas, on the farm in Calhoun County until he left home, perhaps for the Army in World War II, after which everyone lost track of him. I do not know the name of Holly's mother, but Holly was probably born in the late 19th or early 20th century.
