I am trying to break through a brick wall. If anyone has a lead on an Etna Alice Thornburg who moved to West Virginia from San Francisco in the 1960s, I would be grateful to hear from you. She passed away in 1983.

Here is what I know so far"

"Etna A. Thornburg [Etna Alice Rearick per birth certificate; "Ethna N." (sic) Thornburg on the death certificate] was a long time resident of Lane County, OR, where her parents finally settled. She married a man named "Thornburg" of whom nothing else is know [save that he might have been a Naval Officer] and lived in San Francisco during the 1950s. They were divorced (date unknown) and on 7 Nov 1967 a social security card was applied for on her behalf by an "H. V. Johnson (Guardian), of Eugene, OR." According to her death certificate, she lived in Walton, Roane County, WV and died in the Riverside Nursing Home in St. Albans, Kanawha County, WV. Beyond the above, nothing is known of her life from about 1930 until her death, including how she wound up in West Virginia. According to her death certificate she is buried in the Orma Cemetery, Orma, WV."
I have a little info on Aaron Ash. Per his will of record in Ritchie County, it list some of his children, namely William Ash, Iva (Rollins), Myrtle (Ball) and Ada(Hummer).

It appears that Myrtle Ball was married to Edgar Ball. Their children were HG Ball Frenna Rogers. They possibly had a son EF Ball.

HG Ball lives in Parkersburg. His wife's name is Della.

Frenna Rogers lived in Punta Gorda, FL. I do not have much info on her but know she had a son David Lee Rogers. He has since passed away. Would you know if Frenna had any other children. How about David?

I am also looking for some info on Ada Hummer who was a daughter of Aaron Ash. Any help would be greatly appreceiated.

Made the trip to the Fairview Cemetery today. Had some difficulty finding the cemetery since there had been nemerous roads put in since I had been there and the schoolhouse that was a primary landmark has been torn down. Here are further instructions as how to find the cementery:

When you reach the top of the hill, bear right. When you come to the next road to the right turn right even though it looks as if it may not go anywhere. Look for the cemetery on the right. It will be easy to miss so watch carefully. There is one place that you will need to have 4WD to get through. The grass and weeds are rather high, but you can still walk around in it fairly well. I took photos of the graves of Henry Benton and Lavern Collins as well as Charles McCutcheon (baby) and Darius Barnes (child). There are graves that have stones for McCartney, Vannoy, Kendall and others that I don't remember. If you would happen to want any of the photos I have, I will be glad to send them if you will send me your email address.

Norma Shaffer

To get to the Fairview Cemetery:

Come to Grantsville in Calhoun County.

Take Route 7 for about 7 miles to Wolf Run.

Go left on Wolf Run. You will travel parallel to a small stream for quite a distance and then will come to a steep hill. Climb this hill to the top. This road is rough and the hill is steep. I would suggest to come only in dry weather and to have a 4WD vehicle.

At the top of the hill turn right and travel a short distance to the cemetery.

The cemetery was fenced a few years ago so it should be fairly easy to find. I haven't been there in probably nearly 20 years.

But I went into the West Virginia Division of Culture and History web site and there are two marriages listed in Calhoun County of Craddocks to Sampsons. Homer Sampson married Oce Craddock, 6 Apr 1916 and J E Sampson married Pearl Craddock, 17 Oct 1920. Sorry that is all the help I can be at this time but I hope this information was helpful.

When I bought my home from my mother I researched the liens that had been against the house to be sure they were all clear myself. I did this because it was going to save me quit a bit of money in lawyers fees if I did it myself. To do this I went to the Court House in Wood County and told them what I wanted to do and they showed me to a room filled with books, told me what to do, and I started my search. I found all of the loan papers where my parents had borrowed against the house including the original purchase. This told me who had sold the home to them in the 1950's. Just for fun, I looked to see what they had borrowed against the house and so on back to when the house was first built in 1895. This will work for you as long as no one paid cash for the house when buying it. But even if someone paid cash for the home there should be some sort of deed of sale at the Court House. Just check with the County Clerk at the Court House. It was really interesting to see where people had borrowed against the home and what the money was used for. I found every remodel my parents had done to the home over the years. Happy researching...

Isabelle Morris and Jesse Martin

Isabelle Morris (1854-1898), the second daughter of Levi Morris and Ann Milliken, was apparently born in Calhoun Co., VA (now WV) and died there (athough the birth place may have been Greene Co., PA). Isabelle is supposed to have married someone by the name of Jess Martin and they had one daughter, Louisa Martin (1875-1893). In the 1880 census Isabelle and Louisa (using the Morris name) are living with Levi and Ann with no indication of where Jesse might be. And Isabelle is listed as single. I do have obits. for Isabelle and Louisa from the Chalhoun Chronicle (see below) where both are given the last name of Martin.

Descendants of Isabelle Morris

Generation No. 1

1. Isabelle11 Morris (Levi10, Peter9, Henry8, Robert7, John6, Lewis (of Passage Point)5, Thomas4, William3, Morris Owen ap2 Richard, Richard1 Morris)1 was born Dec 12, 1854 in PA, and died Dec 08, 1897 in Calhoun Co., WV. She married Jess Martin.

Notes for Isabelle Morris:
MARTIN, ISABELLE
12/14/1897
Mrs. Isabelle Martin, whose serious sickness we mentioned a week or two ago, died at the home of her father, Levi Morris, last Wednesday morning and was interred at Mt. Zion cemetery Thursday morning. A very large crowd viewed the remains and Rev. Sant Robinson, of the M.E. Church South,
conducted the service.

OBITUARIES, 1893-1900, Calhoun County, W. Va. Submitted by Norma Knotts Shaffer. Note: The date under the name is the date the obit appeared in the 'Calhoun Chronicle'.
Date 1897

More About Isabelle Morris:
Burial: Mt. Zion Cemetery, Grantville, Calhoun Co., WV

Child of Isabelle Morris and Jess Martin is:
2	i.	Louisa12 Martin, born 1875 in Calhoun Co., WV; died 1893 in Calhoun Co., WV.

Notes for Louisa Martin:
MARTIN, LOUISA
7/25/1893
Louisa Martin, grand daughter of Levi Morris, departed this life on Sunday July 16, 1893, after a long painful illness. While it had been expected that death would come to her relief, yet her friends clung to her to the last and resisted the attacks of the grim monster to the end. This ends the life of one of the purest and fairest flowers. Only the recollection of an exemplary and christian life is left to commemorate her stay on this earth. She was buried in the Mount Zion cemetery on the 17th last.

OBITUARIES, 1893-1900, Calhoun County, W. Va. Submitted by Norma Knotts Shaffer. Note: The date under the name is the date the obit appeared in the 'Calhoun Chronicle'.

More About Louisa Martin:
Burial: Mount Zion Cemetery, Calhoun Co., WV

Endnotes

1. 1880 Census, IGI Index (Household Record), "Electronic."

Who was Jesse Martin and why is he not listed with the family in 1880 or mentioned in the obits.? Is there a scandal here?

Who were the parents of Jesse Martin? What did Jesse do for a living?

Willing to share information.

Bill Muller (married to a Morris)
muller1938@yahoo.com

I am working on my wife's MORRIS family and have come across something of a mystery.
Mary Elizabeth Morris (1853-1926) married Masadonia D. FOWLER (1846-1926) in about 1872 in Calhoun Co., WV.

They had a daughter, Mary Elizabeth Fowler (1882-??), who married Luther LITTLE (1879-1972). Mary Elizabeth Fowler and Luther Little, in turn, had a daugther, Bertha Viola Little (1912-??), who married Thurl GUNN (or Edward Thurl Gunn) (1914-2002). And there is lies the mystery. Who is Thurl Gunn?

Some sources list him as the son of Peter Poe (P.P.) Gunn (1897-1979) and someone by the name of Flossie (last name unknown). P.P.Gunn was a prominent politician and businessman in Calhoun Co., WV.

Most of the online sources for P.P. Gunn do NOT list Flossie as a wife (or anything else) or Thurl as his son.

Flossie is listed in the 1920 census as the wife of Ray Boggs and a complex household which I think the census taker may have screwed up (see below):

1920 Census listing for Sherman, Calhoun Co., WV (ED 22, p. 8A):

Claria B Pettit, age 46, Head of household, Single, b. WV, Occ. Farmer

Cora M Burrows, age 54, Sister, Wd, b. WV

Gearl Burrows, age 19, daughter, Single, b. WV
(surely the daughter of Cora Burrows and not Caria Pettit)

Earl Burrows, age 19, son, Single, b. WV
(surely the son of Cora Burrows and not Caria Pettit)

Ray Boggs, age 30, son-in-law, Married, b. WV, Occ. Farmer
(Son-in-law of whom: Cora of Claria?)

Flossie Boggs, age 24, daughter, Married, b. WV
(the daughter of Claria Pettit OR Cora Burrows?)

Thurl Gunn, age 4, son, single, b. WV
(probably the son of Flossie Boggs and not Claria, but . . . ..)

Thurl is NOT living with Ray and Flossie Boggs at the time of the 1930 census and I have been unable to identify where he might have been. He would have only been 15.

Thurl Gunn apparently died in Round Rock, Williamson Co., TX in 2002.

Can any one help to identify who the father of Thurl Gunn might be?

Can anyone help to identify the maiden name of his mother, Flossie?

Willing to exchange information.

Bill Muller (muller1938@yahoo.com)

Etna (a.k.a. Ethna or Edna) Alice Thornburg nee Rearick

I am trying to find information on the Husband of Etna Thornburg [nee: Rearick]. Etna was born 28 Feb 1910 in Washington State, grew up in Lane County, OR, and died in Apr 1983. Her last address was in Wallback, Clay County, West Virginia. She died in a nursing home in St. Albans, Kanawha County, West Virginia. She is rqputedly burried in the Orma Cemetery in Orma, Calhoun County, West Virginia; the death certificate is from Roane County, West Virginia.

She married a Thornbur (possibly a Naval Officer) and lived for a long time (from sometime after 1930 until at least 1959) in San Francisco, CA.

Is there anyone here from the Clay, Roane or Calhoun Counties area who could do an obituary lookup or check for and send me a picture of her grave marker? You may post here or you can contact me through the link at my Ancestry.com public profile.
