find that Rosa Hess,33 married John W. Cook, 27at her residence in Braxton Co. March 5, 1912 ... Rosa Butler Cook married Anise George 5 Feb 1922 Ira, Clay Co. WV ... taaa dahhh...finnaalllly, have put Rosa with Anise [as my mother had told me] She had marriages to widowers with large groups of children but don't believe she had biological children.

Rosa Belle Butler b 6 Nov 1876 Calhoun County WV d 7 Aug 1924
Her Father John Benjamin Butler b 22 Sept 1853, Braxton Co. WV, d 6 June 1908... may be buried in Searcy Co., Arkansas where his son Samuel lived.

Clevie Rider (Grover Cleveland) had a timber camp by Wolf Creek, Tanner center district of Gilmer County WV in 1900 census.
Clevie was working in the mountains Clevie had a group of men working for him and would travel from place to place cutting timber. His wife, Gladys "Dora" was cook. Story goes that Rosa Butler and Ann Mace [who must have worked at the camp]were having problems over some man, and Ann shot Rosa in the head. They loaded Rosa on a "flat car" and took her away after the shooting and I believe it was taking her to a Doctor, but can't say for sure, but she died from the injury.

James F. Nicolas 1895 Gilmer Co
Samuel Lawson 1898 Calhoun Co.
Alex Hess 1902 Braxton Co
John W Cook 1912 Braxton Co
Anise George 1922 Clay Co.
...most were men with families that Rosa cared for/raised..don't think she ever had a child of her own..
Though married 5 times, she was buried with maiden name of Butler..buried Erbacon Rd Cem. Centralia, Braxton Co.

The Calhoun Co. marriages on the West Virginia Archives site start at 1856, by the way, but no, you're correct, C. M. and Nancy are NOT there for 1878.

I did find a transcription of their 26 Dec 1878 marriage on the WV Genweb site (Google it) and then plug in Calhoun County, then Calhoun marriage records 1876-1880. The transcriber said the originals were barely legible, so that may explain why the WV Archives doesn't have them. The index starts with BRIDE, who is indexed N. MARTIN and GROOM, indexed as Charles RHEA. The source microfilm, to see the original, is the LDS Family History Film # 0807456.

Hope this helps. I would have copied a screen shot of the record for you, but it was 14 pages long!

Rosa married Alex Hess, 10 Dec 1902, Braxton County...still together 1910 census..Alex is married to Dorca in 1920 census..
Have her death Aug 7, 1924, buried as Rosa B. Butler, Erbacon Rd Cemetery, Centralia, Braxton County.
Rosa was shot by Anne Mace, mother of Dewey Mace of Rosedale, at a timber camp on "Wolf Creek" in Braxton County.
I haven't been able to locate documentation of her death or the shooting.

Lucy Justice's maiden name is Deal. She was first married to John Duncan when they came up from either Pike County, KY or Logan County, WV area. John died sometime in the early 1840's and then she married Alex Justice. John and Lucy's son is John Duncan and he is my 3rd great grandfather (I misspoke previously and Lucy is my 4th great grandmother). Lucy and Alex had three children. Two sons James and Aaron and one daughter who's name escapes me now but should be in my database. I believe James and the daugther are twins. I will find the pictures of the gravestones and send to you. Trust me this is a very tangled section of the tree that has taken me a while to get straighten out

Do you have a connection to Rosa Butler? My father was at that timber camp when this happened.I heard him tell the story many times.He would have been 19 years old, there working for his uncle Clevie Rider. The dates you gave will help me fill in some blanks,

Scratch that. Found the marriage record of Joseph N and Virginia E. Morris 13 September 1899 Calhoun County. He is the son of James and Rebecca Justice. James was the son of Lucy and Alexander Justice. On rootsweb.com worldconnect pages go to database: cicione and and you can find the privious generations. I belive I have a photo of the gravestones for James and Rebecca. Anyway hope this helps out on the Justice line. BTW James married Rebecca Butler so you will find some Butler info in my database as well. So you know Lucy Justice is my 3rd great grandmother.

There is a Josh N. Justice born May 6 1879 in Roane County son of Alx and Harrett E. Justice. The record online is typed so there is also the possibility of a typo in the record and it should be Joseph N. Maybe look in the 1880 and 1900 census Raone or Calhoun County and check out Alex or Alexander as head of the family and see what is shows.

Enon Cemetery

Hello,

I am related to the Charles Burch and Burns family. I see that they are buried at Enon Cemetery. I know that it is located on Rte 7 between Grantsville and Russett.

Is there anyone who can tell me exactly where? I have located Enon Church on Google Maps, and am wondering where it is relative to that. Close by? I cannot see it on street view. Any help would be greatly appreciated. I am planning a trip to visit the graves and pay my respects.

James Arthur/Mariah Adkisson death/graves

Seeking to find the graves of James Arthur d 1898 either in Wirt or Calhoun Co WV
Mariah d 1908 In the 1900 census she was living with her son Isaac Arthur who is buried in the DePue Cem on RT 5 across from Creston,Wirt Co WV, There are 2 unmarked graves beside Isaac Arthur's monument.
I would like to set a monument at their graves.
Any help or clues will be appreciated.
I can not find a death record for either of them.

I have my mothers old personal address book and on the top of one page in large letters is the name Amick followed by question marks....I think if a DNA test is ever done on descendants of John Benjamin Butler, it will be found that he is the illegitate son of Dorotha and an Amick neighbor

For many years I have seen researchers so that Benjamin Butler being married twice. In the 1850 a woman is listed with the name Delilah and all subsequent census list Alice. Where they can found marriage records of Ben's children list Alice as the mother. I personally think that Alice was his only wife. Who is Delilah? Not sure. Also I think Alice maiden name is Skidmore. Would like to hear other opinions.
