Samuel Maxwell, son of Henry and Agnes Carson Maxwell, went from what is now Adams county PA to Brooke County WV around 1793 along with several brothers. He married Jennie Edie and died there 1807, Jennie Edie died 1813. They had seven children, most of whom went to Ohio but Nancy Maxwell m. John Brownlee and stayed in WV and Mary Polly Maxwell m. David Craig and stayed in brooke. It's possible that Elizabeth m. Henry Barnet along with sons Alexander and
James also stayed in WV.

Thanks so much for your help! I pretty much have all the info you sent me. I need more info on Thomas Campbell (brother of Alexander) or Robert Campbell. If Thomas is my ancestor, he should have a son named Robert Campbell. If Robert is my ancestor, he too should have a son named Robert but is he related to Alexander? I have not been able to determine if Robert or Thomas is my ancestor. I have found little info on either one.

THANKS SO MUCH FOR YOUR HELP!

Elizabeth

Alexander Campbell's brother?
Hi. I'm hoping that someone can help me resolve a VERY frustrating problem. My great grandfather was Robert Campbell. He was born in 1826 in Fayette County, PA. Several family sources, including obituaries, say that his mother was Jemima Turney (or Tarley) and his father was Thomas Campbell (1802-1835), brother of the famous Alexander Campbell of Bethany College. After talking to Bethany College, I'm told Alexander had a brother named Thomas who lived and died around the same time but he didn't have a son named Robert and wasn't married to Jemima Turney. Another source lists Jemima Turney as being married to a Robert Campbell with a son named Robert but I can't find any further information on him. Does anyone know of any online sources about Alexander Campbell's genealogy? I have seen just about every religious website about him but none about his brothers. Can anyone advise me?

THANKS

Elizabeth Garland
ebarwick@hotmail.com

Hi,

I got a set of Civil War pension application papers from the National Archives and it wasn't "my" James LOVE. I'd like to find someone who can use the papers.

There are over 70 pages. James Love served in Co. C, 52nd Ohio Volunteer Infantry. He was a Private. He was also in Co. C, 3rd U.S. Cavalry. Looks like he lived at Fowlerstown P.O., Wellsburg, Brooke Co., WV. James Love and Permelia Dimit were married 15 June 1865 at her father's home in Washington Co., PA. Some places in the papers it says James Love died 6 Nov 1885. He was born in Washington County, PA. James & Permelia Love had a son, David, and a daughter Alive Love.

There is more genealogical info in the papers.

Laura

My ggrandfather had a sister Drusilla who married Alexander May. I haven't been able to find much on them. I think I did find a death date at one time but I'll have to locate that again. I know they had one son, John C. May who was living with A James Smith family in 1880 census. Alexander and Drusilla had both passed away by then and John was about 16. There is a John May and Nannie May buried in Franklin Cemetery in Brooke County. Is this John May the son of Alexander and Drusilla? Nannie is the daughter of a James Devore and Jane Yeaters I believe. Where are Alexander and Drusilla buried?
More questions, my grandfather's sister, Sophia Gertrude Stewart, married a J.M. Wiegmann and I believe they lived in Avella. I would like to find more info on them, if they had children, where they are buried, etc. Thanks for any help!

Barb

Looking for any information available for Campbell or Everett families living in Brooke County 1800-1850.

Elizabeth Everett, daughter of Richmond Everett, married John Campbell on 01/24/1828 in Brooke County. Elizabeth Everett was born in 1804 in Maryland, John Campbell in 1804 in Virginia.

Richmond Everett was the son of John Everett. The Everetts migrated from Maryland to Cabell County/Brooke County.

1830 Census has John Campbell and wife in Brooke County, entry preceded by Mary Campbell (widow).

1840 Census has Elizabeth Campbell and children in Brooke County, entry preceded by Mary Campbell (widow) with the subsequent entry being John Everett.

In 1850, Elizabeth Campbell and children (Edward, Mahala, John H., Mary and Margaret) are in Steubenville, Jefferson County OH where Edward (19) and John (15) work as brickmasons.

Any leads appreciated.

I am looking for anything on George Green and Mary his wife. They are on the tax records starting in about 1801. George Green and Mary lived 2-3 miles from the Courthouse in the Cross Creek areea. George died in 1819 young and Mary died about 1824. They left behind 11 children which I have documented. My 3rd ggrandmother, Ann Green married a John or James McCreary. I cannot find anything about John (James) McCreary's parents. He was born in PA in Mar 1800. Ann was born 8 Oct 1805. They left West Virginia and went to Morgan Co., Ohio and later Highland and Clinton county, Ohio. The oldest child Jane Green married Andrew Smith and stayed in Wellsburg. Sarah Green married Alexander Morrison and had a son. Elizabeth Green married Samuel Adams. They went to Meigs, Muskingum Co., Ohio. Hugh Green married Mary Ann Carter, but died of cholera on the way to New Orleans leaving his wife and two little girls. Mary Green married Sutton Liggett of Washington, Co., PA. Ellen Green married Frank Adams; Susan Green married another Liggett, George Green Jr. Married Sarah McKinley and went to Morgan co., ohio; David Green married supposedly a Leah Randall (which I have yet to prove). If anyone has information on the above families, I would really appreciate some help.

My relatives, Joseph and Elizabeth Gist were buried on their plantation in Brooke County, West Virginia, about three miles east of Wellsburg. The burying ground was ploughed over and the tombstones were laid in a wall inside of the old spring house. In the fall of 1946, the stones were found by members of the family and removed to the Franklin Cemetery, east of Wellsburg, where many of their descendants are buried. Can anyone tell me where I can get information regarding the Franklin Cemetery.

Mason Roberts, Arthur Samuel Roberts and John Joseph Roberts(went to Ohio)and sisters Nancy mcCreary (wife of William McCreary), Margaret Lewis (wife of Job Lewis), and Jemima Roberts(old maid who lived with Otho Hedges family-may be some family connection there I'm also researching).

One question I'm trying to answer is who is the Margaret Roberts on the same page of the 1810 census as my William Roberts, she may be a clue that I need an answer for.

After they were married they had moved to Beaver County, Pennsylvania. THat is where my grandmother Leona MILLER Alexander was born on June 7, 1917. And then they moved to Wellsburg, west Virginia. However, I do not know the names of Robert D. Miller and Leona BALL's parents, nor do I know the exact date of births or deaths. I am completely stuck. If any one can help, I would greatly appreciate it. Thanks! Paula Matty
I believe this may be my gg'g-father, Isaac DAVIS' mother and sibling. I had followed them from the 1850 US Federal Census in Marshall County (see my posting in the Marshall County, WV message board). It seems Issac's father, James DAVIS died before 1860.
Looking for Anyone Knowledgeable of Thomas and Alexander Campbell
I have been researching my ancestors and have been frustrated by a possible link to Thomas and Alexander Campbell. The oldest relative that I know of was Robert James Campbell who according to his obit, was born in 1826 in New Geneva, PA (Fayette County) to Thomas Campbell and Jemima Turney Campbell. His father "Thomas" died in 1834 and the widow Jemima Campbell moved the family to Guernsey County Ohio. No mention of a connection to the Thomas and Alexander Campbells of Brooke County there but several other sources do hint at a connection:

Robert's daughter Mary's obit says she was a great niece of Alexander Campbell

A bio of Robert's son J.R. says that his grandfather "was a finely educated man who was for nearly thirty years president of a college."

A newspaper article that claimed that Robert was in possession of a book belonging to "his grandfather" and "it is inscribed by the owner, Thomas Campbell, dated February 20, 1816."

And yet when I research Thomas and Alexander Campbell (on Ancestry.com), I find NO plausible link. Thomas had a son named Thomas that might be the father of Robert Campbell but the family trees I have seen show that he did not have a son named Robert or a wife named Jemima. So no link. Am I looking at the wrong family tree? Can anyone help me figure out for sure that Robert was or was not a grandson of Thomas and a nephew of Alexander?

All suggestions welcome!

Elizabeth Garland
ebarwick@hotmail.com

Eliza Jane (1822 WV - 1887 OH) is the d/o Joseph S and ELizabeth Ann (LAZEAR) ROBINSON. They are in the Brooke County, VA/WV 1860 Census along with his brother James DAVIS and a Amanda KEITH (Isaac's niece???).

Thanks!
KJDavis
Pfister Cemetery

In the book SOME MARYLAND BAXTERS it mentions that many of the descendents of Nicholas and Delia (Baxter) Headington were buried in Sanders Cemetery and Ebenezer Cemetery on Cross Creek. Checking the Brooke County GenWeb site I found a cemetery listing for Pfister Cemetery with several Headingtons and a memorial for Delia Headington. I wondered if Pfister Cemetery was once known as Sanders Cemetery or if they were separate cemeteries. I also wondered if there are published listings for Sanders and Ebenezer cemeteries? Please email any response.
I have many Porter's in my family tree and can provide you an outline of the ones I have entered. My g-great grandmother was Annie Caroline Porter who grew up on a farm near Eldersville, PA about 3 miles from the West Virginia Border (in 1806 this was Virginia). She married Nicholas Headington Hindman who was a blacksmith and they resided in Brooke County West Virginia. Brooke County was in Virginia until 1863. Conn is a name I've come across before in correspondence with another interested person who connected with the Hindmans through the Sanders family also of Brooke County. I'd have to look through my records to recall the connection but I believe a child was taken in by Samuel Bishop Hindman and his wife Margaret Headington Hindman after the death of the child's parents. This child married into the Conn family later in life. I can check if your interested. The porter family I descend from later moved to Fazeyburg, OH to work as blacksmiths and work on the railroad as it moved westward. my e-mail is dsklar1961@yahoo.com if your interested in the information I have.

I'm asking Brooke Co. researchers for help:
Do family journals, diaries, letters, etc. mention these folks ?:
For about 10 years I have been researching Araminta (Minta/Minnie) Hukill b. c. 1809 probably in Brooke Co., dau. of Joseph and ______ HUKILL of near Bethany, Brooke Co. (settled there c. 1807 from the Cecil Co., Md.-New Castle Co., Del. area). Mother ______ Hukill prob. died 1816-1819 in Brooke Co. Siblings were: William HUKILL of Wellsburg, Brooke Co.; Maria (Robert Patterson) of Burlington, Iowa; Eliza (Charles KEMPLE) of Marshall Co., WV. ; Amelia (Frederick SCHWATKA) of Salem, Ore. and Rachel Drusilla (Henry SPIKER Jr.). of Hancock & McDonough Cos., Ill.

She mar. _____ Owen/Owens (possibly William) c. 1828. A William Owen(s) and family is listed in Brooke Co. 1840 close to William Hukill and a Robert OWEN; Wm. Owen(s0 is listed in Brooke Co. tax records 1840-1845, then completely disappears. I can't find this family or any Araminta OWEN(S) in the 1850 census anywhere in the country.

Somewhere out there must be descendants and/or kin of William Harry Stewart Jr and Mary Ethel Masters....William Harry Jr. was born Oct. 17, 1895 and died July 1960, son of William Harry Stewart Sr and Annie Maderia. William Sr. was born Dec. 25, 1838 and is buried in West Liberty Cemetary. William Sr's parents were John Stewart and Lucinda ? John was born Aug. 1802 in (W)VA and Lucinda died Dec. 1864, birth year and place unknown. I have John's siblings taken from Stewart family Bible. I think his father may have been James...trying to document it.

Mary Ethel Masters was born June 14, 1901 in Deep Valley Greene Co. PA, daughter of Mathew Masters and Dora Poland. Mary and William were married June 15, 1920 and Mary died in 1969. They are buried at West Alexander cemetary, as are Mary's parents and Dora's parents.

William Harry and Mary Ethel Stewart had the following children...William (Todd) Stewart III, Kenneth Eugene Stewart, Andrea Delores Stewart (Jackson), Darleen Hope Stewart (Miller) (my mother), and Paul Masters Stewart.

Any help in locating information on this family and any living relatives/descendants greatly appreciated.

Looking for information about J.D. Callendin (Callendine), who appears on 1880 U.S. Federal Census, Hamilton County, TN, with wife Annie, daughter also named Annie, son-in-law T.J. Walker, and two grandchildren, Mabel and T. Guss Walker. J.D. lists his and both his parents' place of birth as West Virginia. The surname is definitely spelled Callendin on the census, but I have not been able to find any lists that use that spelling. Callendine seems to be one of several spelling options.

Very much appreciate any and all assistance.
Richard

I am working on a family of Glasures(various spellings) of Brooke Co. I have one person helping me but thought I'd try and spread this around in hopes someone else could help too.
George Glasure was first located in the 1840 census for Brooke Co.It's possible his wife was Elizabeth Workman? He had four children. In 1836 three of his children-Margaret, David & Elizabeth were bonded out to a James Marshall, until they were eighteen. The youngest son,George born 1835 isn't mentioned-why? When these children were of age, they and their father George moved to Beaver Co. Pa.George died @ 1870.Daughter Margaret died in 1901-unmarried.
David married Nancy Hamilton,Elizabeth, Thomas Hamilton and the youngest son George married Sarah Cole.
Why didn't the father take care of these children? Where was his wife?
My understanding is that these Hamilton's came from Brooke Co.also. Since Beaver co.'s marriages don't start early enough to look there I wonder if BRooke Co. would have them?
Any ideas, suggestions or help would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks,
Jean

They settled in Morgan County Ohio.

The 1902 Morgan County Ohio obit of Mary Robinson Hamilton states that she first married a Robinson in Brooke County WVA.

The obit states that her mother was a Pierce.

A number of Pierce families from New Castle Delaware settled in Morgan County Ohio.
I am researching grandparents and other family who lived in the Wellsburg area of Brooke County in the late 1700s.
Henry LINN b. 1775 Brooke County, possibly with brother Moses Linn. His wife was Rebecca CAMMEL, daughter of Mary VAN BUSKIRK, born abt 1755 (descended from the many Van Buskirks of Denmark, Holland, New Amsterdam
[New York], and New Jersey), and Walter CAIN Sr.
Siblings of Mary VAN BUSKIRK were Lt. Lawrence VAN BUSKIRK, Lewis Taylor
VB, Hustanaes VB.
Walter CAIN Sr. was b. abt 1759 in, we believe, Brooke County. He is
said to have been a slave owner, and that he owned an "orchard" and sold
"fruit" down the Ohio River to points south. From Walter CAIN Sr., and
Mary VAN BUSKIRK came George, Walter Jr., and Polly CAIN.
It's possible that at least some of these families from in or around
Franklin Co Pennsylvania and/or contiguous Washington Co Maryland.
Henry Linn and his family immigrated down the river to Franklin County,
Indiana by flatboat about 1823 with family of 13 LINNS/LYNNS (George W.,
Rebecca, William Henry, John, Walter, Jane, Margaret, Isabella, James,
Lawrence, Harrison, Jackson, and Mary A "Polly"). From Indiana, they
dispersed throughout the country.I know that a couple of the Van Buskirks will killed by Indians in Brooke County.

I am researching the DAVIS, GRAHAM, and GRIFFITH surnames in Brooke County who were residents of Ohio, and later Brooke County, Ohio from 1785 until 1825.

Nathaniel DAVIS (born ca 1742 in Baltimore Co., MD & died ca 1796 near Holliday's Cove) married ca 1766 Catherine GRIFFITH/GRIFFIN (born ca 1746 possibly in Baltimore Co., MD and died 1818 near Holliday's Cove). The couple and their 10 children removed from Baltimore Co., MD in 1785; 2 additional children were born in Brooke County. Their children married into many of the early settlers families.

Their son Nathaniel DAVIS, Jr. married Sarah GRAHAM, daughter of Thomas GRAHAM, a Pennsylvania veteran of the War of the Revolution while his son Thomas GRAHAM, Jr. married their daughter Honor DAVIS. Nathaniel died ca 1838 in Brooke County while wife Sarah died in 1884 in Tuscarawas Co., OH. Thomas GRAHAM, Sr. was born ca 1751 in Ireland, and died in 1825 in Brooke County. In 1778, he married Hannah HOOPER, who was born ca 1751 possibly in Massachusetts and died before 1820 in Brooke County. They were the parents of five children. Thomas GRAHAM, Jr. died in 1872 and wife Honor died in 1873--both in Hanover Twp., Washington Co., PA.

I am willing to share data with anyone researching the same family.
the same family.
