I think in the county of Braxton.
He was killed in an accident while working for the B&O. His wife's
name was Elizebeth Jane Jones. They had three children
(Iva Mae, Ida Gay, and H. Guy). I am his grandson and I
would like to know where he and his wife were buried. I
would also like to know about the accident he had on the
B&O.

Thank you,
Jim

We have lookup volunteers, an unidentified photo section, and over 250 members..."

Since that time, we have posted over 8000 tombstone photos, hundreds of obits, transcriptions of death records, and have over 400 members. We added Clay Co to the mix some time ago, and the site just keeps on growing.

If you're not a member but would like to be, please contact me directly via e-mail for an invitation.

I think their middle names of Settle and Wealthy may be family names. They lived at a place my mom called Holly Junction. My grandmother's parents were Abram and Virginia L. Sandy. The only thing I know about my grandfathers parents is that his mother's maiden name was Poe. Can anyone give me more information? I often heard from my mother that my grandmother was part Indian. Do I have any relatives in Braxton Co. who would know my family?

According to a book called "Genealogy of the Sutton Family in America", they are buried under an obelisk in Skidmore Cemetery in Sutton, Braxton Co., VW. Where is this cemetery located? Can someone send me a trascription of the headstone?

Specific information on:

JOSIAH C. STEWART b. 3/4/1849 and d. 7/14/1929. His parents were FRANCIS C. STEWART and LUTECIA V. SIMMONS. Grandfather was JOHN STEWART.

ROBERT MOSES COOMBS b. 11/11/1883 and d. 5/20/1958. His parents (suspected, but no proof) are MOSES and LYDIA [RHEA] COOMBS. Moses was supposedly born in Maine.

Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.
I am interested in information about a Cynthia Jane CRAWFORD. On some documents, she appears as the daughter of John CRAWFORD of Sutton. On others, she is listed as the daughter of Sarah DILLON. In Don Norman's material there is a Cynthia born to a Parazade Dillon and John Crawford. The birthdate, 1852, places her in the correct time frame. My Cynthia married William A. Scott on March 9, 1869. She died June 14, 1926 and is buried in the Jarvis Cemetery in Braxton County.

Karen
Can anyone tell me if the Orlando cemetery is located in Braxton Co, or Lewis Co. I'm researching the Riffle family from Braxton Co, WV. While going through the death certificates on the West Virginia History and Archives website I have found some Riffle's who died in Braxton Co and are listed as buried in the Orlando Cemetery, Braxton Co. I have come across others who died in Lewis Co and are listed as buried in the Orlando cemetery in Lewis Co.

Am I correct to assume that since Braxton Co and Lewis Co boarder each other that there is only one Orlando cemetery and that it straddles the boarder? Or are there two Orlando cemeteries?

Davis married 1 May 1881, Alvy Gibson Linger
6.Sarah Ellen Davis married ______Grimm
7.Elizabeth Lucinda "Lou" Davis married _____Mealey
8.Emily Ann Davis
9.Pruda Jane Davis died very young

There's a story written in the family record book that says, "When a nursing infant she and her mother were lost two weeks in the woods of Virginia. Her mother lived on chestnuts. She followed some cattle home at last." Nancy Jane's husband served in Batt'y E, 1st WV Lite Art'y during the Civil War. I have some great pictures of these
people back in WV. I just wish I knew who most of them were. The only clue I've gotten was that at their marriage a Rachel Cutlip and John Mollohan gave
consent for her to wed. I'd appreciate any help.
Carolyn Davis Whitmire

Watson family (my family)

Hi: I am Richard Hansford Watson Jr, my father gave me up for adoption when I was 3. I have since found him after not seeing him for over 40 years. I also met and fell in love with, his mother, Eva Watson.

I am trying to find out Eva's maiden name and I cannot ask her because my father keeps her locked up as he is an only child and grew very jealous of my relationship with her. He is not a nice guy.

My grandmother Eva, also told me I have a sister living in WV that will not speak to our father and I would like to find her also.

Here is what I know so far:

Richard Hansford Watson was born in WV, his father was Oley who was born in Sutton, WV on 11/15/1910 - he died in Tucson, AZ in 12/84. His mother is listed on Oley's SS application as "Deliah Bly", his father is listed as "Lyde Newton Watson.

I know also that Oley worked at the Owens-Illinois Glass company in 1936 (Charleston). His father has no SSDI record. Deliah apparently died in Houston 2/15/67 and was born on 3/17/1881.

I have searched exhaustively online but so far can not verify much.

Any help is greatly appreciated and sis, if you read this please respond!

Thanks!

PS: Richard also attended St Albans HS?

I have some history that states that Elza Lee Knight married a Ora Salsbury and a Ora Beamer. Does anyone know which one he married for sure. Also does anyone know anything about a woman by the name of Kate McElwain Salsbury or Salisbury who would have been living in 1910. She wrote a list of children that belonged to John R Sawyers and Nancy Johnson Sawyers. I beleive she might be related to Solomon Carpenter's wife Betsy McElwain Carpenter. Any help on this would be appreciated. thank you.

I am researching my husbands' family once again. I still come to a dead end with my husbands' gggrandfather (George Washington Greathouse) wife. Her name was Anna Eliza Heater and they were married around August 1889 in Roane Co. She was born around July 1869 in Gilmer Co. WV. I can find no info on her or her family. If anyone can help start me in the right direction I would really really appreciate it!! There is no family left that we know to go to and get this kind of information.

Does anyone have a clue who the James Scott was who died on Little Otter in 1890? The only info I have been able to locate is a notation in the April 25, 1890 edition of the Braxton Democrat which says, "James Scott of Little Otter died Monday." I think there were at least two James' in Braxton near that time. Which one was this? Is there any way to find out?

K

I am looking for information about my great grandparents: Daniel J. Conrad and his wife Elizabeth, both born in the mid to late 1880's. I have found them in several census records, but have never been able to find out who the parents of Elizabeth are. They were married in Braxton County October 5, 1871. Family history has her maiden name as Shields but in the marriage records it is Elizabeth J. Wine. I am wondering if she had a previous marriage. There is also a marriage record for an Elizabeth J. Shields married to a Jackson Wine in Braxton County March 31, 1861. Records show that Jackson Wine died just a few years later. Does anyone know if this is the Elizabeth I am searching for? I have been told her mother was Nancy Shields. I would appreciate any information anyone can give me. Thanks to all for your hard work!

I am hoping to get more info on them by finding out ewhat church Rev Rhea practicedin, or what denomination he was. Does anyone have any advise or know how I would find out this info. A strange thing is that my ancestors were from Fayette and Putnam counties. I thought it was strange that they went all the way to Braxton to be married, espeicially during the winter when the travelling must have been bad. Later one of Lucy's brothers also went to Braxton to be married.
Thanks for your help.

George Edward Cutlip - Braxton/Nicholas Co. WV

My notes: Karen Rose-Morris:

In May 2007, I traveled down to Nicholas and Braxton Counties, WV with my husband, David Morris and my 87 yr old mother, Goldie Maye Wilson Rose. We visited the old Baber/Cutlip Cemetery at Bays where my mother's mother, Mary Celina Cutlip Wilson is buried and lots of other direct descendants of my mother. George Edward Cutlip was my mother's maternal grandfather. He is buried there with his wife Sarah. And in front of their graves is two older white markers; one says James K Baber, died 1910 and the other white marker is his wife, Martha Baber, died in 1910. They are the only Babers in that cemetery so the only conclusion I can draw from that is they must have been the Babers who raised George Cutlip. My mother seems to think so, too, though they (the Babers) died 9 years before she was born so she never knew them.

Much speculation about who George Edward Cutlip's birth parents were. His death certificate says that is mother's name was Vina Cutlip. No father listed. Anyone have any information, I would appreciate it.
Franklin's 1926 death certificate, issued in Gallia County OH, gave his marital status as "widower." There is no death record in either WV or OH for Charity. I'm seeking any information on Charity's death date and burial location. Franklin is buried in Mt. Tabor cemetery near Vinton, OH, but on-line records for that cemetery do not list Charity.

According to a death record Arch MOWERY, born 26Mar1894 and died 25Jun1935 at Gassaway, Braxton County, was buried at Sugarcreek Cemetery. Is there a listing for this Cemetery? His wife may have been Grace Olive WHITE. Our research plan is to identify family members of Silas and Tabitha Taylor WHITE. Silas WHITE (March 1848 - March 1932) of Wetzel and Brooke Counties, was son to George Washington WHITE of Wetzel County.

The Calhoun County History Book states that Thomas McElwain married Nancy Rexroad and they had 8 children, of which 3 are; [1] Mary, m. Peter Couger. [2] Elonor [Nellie], m. Norton Gum. [3] Tunis, m. Catherine Propst.
Now, the history submitted by Don Norman,Donna Bradey and Debbie Malec shows a George McElwain married Nancy Rector with the same children as Thomas and Nancy Rexroad. Does anyone know if these parents are one in the same???
>

She was the fifth of eight children, four boys and four girls.

She was married to Patrick H. Bailey of Poca in November 1948. They had four children, Ralph, Debbie Kay, Randall and Patrick Jr. Alice had nine grandchildren, Brian, Tanya, Lanee, Eric, April Dawn, deceased, Neill, Ali, Jessica and Alice; and three great grandchildren, Gage, Baylee and Olivia, with another one due in January.

Like a child's kaleidoscope, Alice had many facets and was quiet about the transitions. She was a mother, a sister, a teacher, a Cub Scout leader, a mom-maw, an avid reader, a lover of the beach and a loyal friend.

Alice graduated with honors from West Virginia State University with a bachelor's degree in education. She taught kindergarten at Rock Branch Elementary for the majority of her career. Alice's passion was teaching children.

After she retired, she volunteered with Project Literacy and the Retired Teachers Association of Putnam County. She spent most of her retirement time at her place in Long Beach, North Carolina, or in Hometown.

She became one of God's angels on Wednesday, October 24, 2007, after a long illness.

In Alice's words, “Each day is a blessing.”

A tribute to the life of Alice will be 2 p.m. Friday, October 26, at Gatens-Harding Funeral Home Chapel with Pastor Delbert Hawley officiating. Burial will follow in Haven of Rest Memory Gardens and Crematorium.

Friends may call from 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home.
Court House Question

    Burning of Sutton
Charleston Daily Mail
March 27, 1938

Razing of Building Recalls Burning Of Sutton During 1861

Special to the Daily Mail

SUTTON, March 26. - Since workmen have started to tear away the rear walls of the Braxton county courthouse, preparatory to building an addition and remodeling the old structure, many questions have been asked about the building of the old courthouse.

Older citizens recall many interesting incidents in connection with its construction.

The first courthouse to serve the county, a small frame building that stood in the same public square, was burned when the town of Sutton was destroyed by fire during the Civil war. The fire was started on an evening between Christmas and New Year in the year 1861 when the town was attacked by three companies of Confederate soldiers.

Girl Blamed for Capture
In his history of Braxton county, John D. Sutton tells an interesting story about the burning of Sutton. Phoebe Hefner, a daughter of James Hefner, who lived about 40 miles from town, came to get a doctor for her sister, Elizabeth, who was very ill with typhoid fever. Dr. A. C. Humphreys consented to go but the post commander in charge of Sutton, refused to allow the girl to return to her home.

She was detained in Sutton over night and when she reached home the next day her sister was dead. She was so incensed that she planned revenge and without waiting for her sister's funeral, she went to Jackson's camp and asked that a force of soldiers be sent to capture Sutton. During the night that she was held in Sutton she had heard the roll call of soldiers, observed their strength and position and this information made the capture easy.

Only 4 Houses Left
Another version is that the town was burned at the request of the property owners, who were then with the Confederate army. They learned that during their absence the Federal troops were using their homes for the storage of commissary supplies and for stabling their horses. Whatever the cause the destruction was almost complete as only four houses were left standing.

For several years the courthouse was not replaced.*** Court was held in a room at the jail and later at the Duffy house which was prepared for the purpose**** In March, 1881, the court appointed F. J. Baxter, W. L. J. Corley, E. S. Bland, Abel M. Lough and John C. Humphreys to prepare a contract with Woods and Atchison, building contractors of Weston, to construct a courthouse for $12,464, according to plans and specifications furnished by C. C. Kemble.

Built With Local Materials
The county court at that time was composed of W. R. Pierson, president, William Stout and J. Y. Gillespie. W. L. J. Corley was the clerk, A. C. Dyer the sheriff. These are all names well known in Braxton county history.

The building was completed in August, 1882. In tearing down the walls, it has been found that a fine grade of poplar lumber was used in the construction. Bricks for the building were made from local clay found near Sutton at what is now the junction of state routes 19 and 13. The lime for the plaster was also a local product, found in limestone on the south side of Elk river and burned in a lime kiln there.

I am looking for a picture of the house that was used as the court house, until the new one was completed in 1882 the court burned down 1862 so it was used for about 20 years, when the new court house was opened what happed to the house that was used as the court house, who bought it or rented it.
From the story above it's called the Duffy house from John D Sutton's book it's the Morgan Dyer house..Where did the reporter find the name Duffy to use in his story when Sutton's book has Dyer..wonder if he read the book and wrote the wrong name.. Strange that he should use the Duffy name as of the date above there were no Duffy's in Sutton.
Sutton's book stated the Morgan Dyer house was taken into custody from the Dyer heirs ..why and under what authority were they allowed to do this ..page 131 From what I understand if I have this right,Morgan Dyer was dead a few years by this time and had only one son Addison who lived with his grandparents in Pendleton county home county of the Dyer family by 1860 he was only about 15 is this the heir Sutton is talking about..the same Addison Dyer who later became sheriff. If so did he ever get his property (house ) back from the county who took it into custody during the civil war, maybe someone can clear up the mix up of the two names.
Thank's Betty
Daniel Isaac Sutton

My grt-grt-grt-grandfather was Daniel Isaac Sutton. He was born in possibly the years 1765 to 1783 and is said to have died near Vicksburg Mississippi while awaiting to board the steamboat for Sutton West Virginia in order to help to settle the estate of his late father, ?? John Davison Sutton ??. He came to America shortly after the American Revloution with his father and at least two brothers. He may have been one of the first of the "Sutton's" to migrate to the old southwest, Mississippi and/or Alabama. He became an attorney in that part of Northeast Louisiana which was to become Monroe, Louisiana.

I would like to know if anyone knows the time at which he came into the N E Louisiana. His first Child, Henry Leonhart Creighton Sutton married Eliza Jane Spurlock, the daughter of a pioneer family of Carrol Parish Louisiana which includes the town of present day Lake Providence. Lake Providence borders on the Mississippi River and on the Arkansas/Louisiana line and is therefore the first good farmland to be seen by those early southbound Mississippi riverboat traverlers and henceforth the reason for its early settlement.

I would appreciate any information concerning the initial arrival of this "Daniel Isaac Sutton' into the deep South. His first child, Henry L. C. Sutton mention earlier was born in Monroe and other children were later born in the Parish of St Laundry near Opelousas.

All help is greatly appreciated. Will share what information I have to all.
Monroe "Dwight" Arender

Clara Hall, dau. of Robert F. Hall and Sarah Hayhurst

Trying to find further details on Clara Hall, the daughter of Robert Felix Hall and Sarah Hayhurst. Clara was born about 1855 and her mother died shortly there after. So Clara Hall was raised by her aunt, Nancy Hayhurst Garee (wife of John Smith Garee.) Clara, living with her Garee relations is in the 1860 and 1870 Braxton Co, West Virginia census. By the 1880 census she is probably married. The only possible match in 1880 is a Clara of the right age married to a Robert Perry in Holly district. Hoping someone has more information on Clara Hall.
