Hi Dick,

If you haven't already figured this out:
Annie Elizabeth Wyatt, daughter of James Madison Wyatt and Lucy Ann Whitesell/Whetzel/Whysell.
After John Wesley Snyder died and Lucy Ann Whitesell died, Mariah L. Williams (Abraham B. Williams sister) married James Madison Wyatt. They did not have any children together.
Benjamin Franklin Snyder, John W. & Mariah L.'s son, married Araminta Wyatt, sister of Annie Elizabeth.
There are also many connections to the Price family.

So George Mathew Williams married his aunt's step-daughter.

Hope that helps,

Sharon Lemkuil

Abel B. Cunningham, born about 1849 and Sarah Jackson, born about 1867 were married December 10, 1907. Sarah was his 3rd wife which would explain the age difference. If this isn't the couple you are looking for perhaps there is another Cunningham/Jackson couple, not Abel and Sarah?

Nancy

The Long store in Tesla was right at the mouth of Cat Heaven Road, close to Two Lick Road. It was a large two-story white building. I believe it's still standing. I lived on Two Lick in the early 80's and at this time the store had already closed. I remember older men sitting inside the store beside a potbelly stove playing checkers and chatting along. I went past there frequently on my way to the Tesla post office right up the road from there as I walked to the post office daily to get the mail since we had a General Delivery box. Anyhow, I was talking with my mother and she couldn't remember the names either but thought that you may contact either Clay and Juanita Long or Jerry Long of which both still live in Tesla. Juanita was my 5th grade teacher. Jerry used to teach the electrical class at the high school, now retired. You can sometimes find him at Gibson-Sizemore Funeral Home where he volunteers and is there almost daily.

Hope this helps,
Lisa

Mike, I'm a bit confused. I thought my great grandmother, Clara Jackson Gross listed her name as Georgie C Jackson on a Braxton County marriage certificate, making me think she was the daughter of David Jackson and Savina May. But census records indicate they had a male named George C Jackson of about the same birth date. I've been told Clara is somehow related to Thomas Stonewall Jackosn, and rode in a Clarksburg parade one time as the oldest living "Stonewall" relative, but I can't link her to him. I have no infomation on a Grover Jackson, except for Grover C Jackson, the son of the same David Jackson mentioned above, and they also had either a son named George C or a daughter named Georgie C as I explained above. I have recorded 11 David Jackson children, but recently saw a post that he had 18.
Can you help me straighten this out?
I beleieve you have Clara Gross' burial information already.

there are 4 elizabeth conrads in the 1850 census for braxton county. there are 3 john conrads (2 john b conrads- cousins- both of whom married Mary...). If you have sorted out this info I am interested. Other parties have attempted, but I disagree with some of their connections due to age differences in Elizabeth (conrad) Wine's age (her tombstone says b.1829). Any info you have found would be appreciated, I'll share what I know.
ap

Braxton, WVA: Native American Heritage inquiry: George W. Wolverton, Rebecca Jane Arthur

Hello,

I'm interested in tracing my Native American heritage and am wondering if anyone can help. I've already posted this inquiry to an earlier thread about George W. WOLVERTON. Forgive the duplicate inquiry on the Braxton WVA message board but I'm not sure how many people will see my post to the much earlier thread.

My grandmother was Mary Barbara ARTHUR MYERS (born 1908 Webster Co. WVA). She was the daughter of of James Anderson ARTHUR (born 1880 Clay County, WVA) and Sarah Jane ROBINSON (born 1889 Back Fork Elk River, Webster WVA). My great, great grandmother, Sarah Jane ROBINSON, was the daughter of Elza LeMaster ROBINSON (born 1870 Braxton, WVA) and Mary Anna WOLVERTON ARTHUR (born 1861 Braxton, WVA). My great, great, great grandmother, Mary Anna WOLVERTON ARTHUR, was born out of wedlock to George W. WOLVERTON (born 1823 Hampshire Co, WVA) and Rebecca Jane ARTHUR (born 1840 Braxton, WVA).

I have a page from the ARTHUR family bible that lists the father of Mary Anna WOLVERTON as Cherokee Indian only (no name). In addition to the bible page, I have gathered the following is information, which I believe to be true, on the lineage of George Washington WOLVERTON of West Virginia:

George W. WOLVERTON was the son of Joab Jacob WOLVERTON-5 (Joel William-4, Daniel-3, Daniel-2, Charles-1). There is a long tradition in this branch of the family that George's mother was Native American, possibly Cherokee. Her name is given as Bertha GAUTHER on the Ancestry.com message board for Braxton Co., WV (dated 2 Feb 2007).

1860 Sandrun P.O. Webster Co., WV Census places George W. WOOLVERTON (extra O added on census) and Rebecca Jane ARTHUR on the Thomas MILLER farm in Braxton, VA. George was working as a farm hand and, it seems, having an affair with Rebecca J ARTHUR. They had two children together, Mary A. Wolverton ARTHUR, born 1861/62 and Robert M. ARTHUR, born 1863/64. George was married to Zelda DENNISON during this time.

Census records from 1850, 1870, and 1880 all give the birth year for George W. WOLVERTON as 1822/23. Only the 1860 census gives a different birth year of about 1832. This census also spells his name WOOLVERTON (with 2 Os). George himself might have transposed the numbers in his birth date, listing it as 1832 instead of 1823, and added the extra O in his last name because he was still married to Zelda DENNISON of Harrison Co, WVA. Marriage records show that George and Zelda were married in 1848.

If George was born in 1822/23, he would have been born before Joab Jacob married Catherine BARTLETT in Preston Co., WV, in 1825. The 1830 census for Hampshire Co., (W)VA, lists a male ages 5-10 in the family of Joab WOLVERTON. This would be George, the child from an earlier marriage or relationship. Most of this information can be found on pp.400-401 of Macdonald's "The Woolverton Family".

Macdonald assumes that George died before 1860 because he is not recorded with his wife, Zelda (DENNISON) WOLVERTON, and children in 1860 Harrison Co.,(W)VA census. George is not recorded in the 1860 Harrison Co census with his wife because he is recorded in the 1860 census of Webster Co., WV, on the MILLER farm with Rebecca ARTHUR. Military records show that George W. WOLVERTON enlisted in the Civil War in 1862 and mustered out in 1865. Additionally, George W. WOLVERTON can be found in 1870 in Fort Lick, Webster Co., WV, and in 1880 in Holly, Braxton Co., WV. In the Veterans Census of June 1890 he is living in Holly District, Flatwoods, Braxton Co., WVA. The census states that he is disabled from a gunshot wound in left foot. No record of his death has been found.

George married Julia HAMRICK in 1868 in Webster Co., WVA and had 9 children with her. Julia ran into trouble when she claimed George's Civil War pension because there was no record of his divorce from Zelda DENNISON. Evidently he was still married to her.

I would love to know about George's mother Bertha GAUTHER. Was she Native American -- Cherokee? Any information you can provide about her would be greatly appreciated!!

Christa Myers

The History of Braxton County and Central West Virginia by John Davison Sutton says Jesse Jackson married Rebecca, daughter of Andrew and Margaret (Johnson) Skidmore. Their children were Polly, Robert, Sylvester,David M. and Abigal.

The death records also shows Rebecca was a daughter of Andrew Skidmore.
http://www.wvculture.org/vrr/va_view.aspx?Id=4567929&Typ...

Jesse Jackson and Rebecca Skidmore were married in 1825 in Nicholas County. Mary Jackson Evans' death record shows that she was born in 1827 but does not show her parents names.

The 1830 census of Nicholas County lists Jesse Jackson but does not show a female child living with him. This doesn't prove anything. The census records may be wrong.

In his book, John Davison Sutton states that Jesse, Robert and Abraham Jackson settled on the Birch River. They were sons of Robert Jackson who lived in Bath County,Va.

John Marshall Evans married Mary Polly Jackson 1n 1846.

The 1850 census shows Robert had a daughter Mary, 12 years of age, living with him.

The 1860 census shows Abraham had a daughter Mary, 12 years of age, living with him.

Sutton further states that David M. Jackson, son of Jesse inherited the old home farm where he was born. This would indicate that there may have been a Will which might include the children of Jesse.

Jesse Jackson died May 1, 1878.
http://www.wvculture.org/vrr/va_view.aspx?Id=4567923&Typ...

I have a marriage license of Mary Polly Jackson to John Martial (Marshall)Evans. I believe Mary's father is Jesse Jackson and her mother Rebecca Skidmore, but do not have any official sources. I am also trying to determine who Rebecca's parents are. I believe it may be a John Skidmore. I would appreciate help from anyone that might have knowledge of these families.

Hi,
Sorry for the delay in responding. I've attached the info that I have on the line. Please let me know if anything is wrong or missing. I can't get very far with this line which is unusual for a paternal line. It's usually the women that are hard to track! A note on the attachment. I've attached the document from the son of John Wesley, James Wesley. I had a corrected one but lost it when my computer died. The information shown is correct as far as I know, however the ancestry in parenthesis is not. I noted this on the sheet as well. I can prove through census records up through William H. however John P. and higher is speculation and one of the Francis is just plain incorrect.

Which line is yours? If you are not from the James Wesley line I will keep searching to see if I have saved anything further back. I have also emailed the researcher I was in contact with to see if he has found anything more on John P. I will pass along that info if the email is still good. If you have other questions feel free to email me at bewb@yahoo.com or continue to post here.

Salt lick is a creek that goes through Flatwoods and on to burnsville, the actual salt lick is just off 19 in Flatwoods you turn down salt lick rd. just a ways past the bowling alley and the lick is about a mile down that road. the road goes on for about 5 or so miles and ends at our familys property where you cross the creek and go onto Carpenters fork rd. we have a civil war grave on top of Salt lick ridge, near the gas line cut, that is my 4x grandfathers resting place, his name is John Knicely.
