Searching for relatives of the following Swimleys:

Joseph F. Swimley born about 1817-1819 in Martinsburg, Berkeley County, W Virginia. His father was from Pennsylvania, but I do not know his name.

Joseph married Mary E. Butler who was born 1835 VA, her parents were born in VA, don't know names or ages.

Joseph's children were: John B.Swimley b 1856 VA, Valley B. b. 1863 VA, Charles Swimley b. 1865 OH, Hackett b. 1866 Champaign Co. Ohio, Emma b 1869 OH, Hattie H. b 1872 OH.

Hi Stacey....I think you & I MIGHT have a connection along the line.My G.G.Grandparents were from Berkley,W.Va/(Va.),which is all the farther I have able to go back to.My maternal grandparents were Harry Swimley & Caris Belle Campbell.Harry's parents were James Swimley & Linnie Sprague.James' parents were Joseph Swimley & Mary Elizabeth Cunningham.Joseph & Mary's children were Charles b.3/1870,James William b.3/1871,Laura Virginia b.5/1973,Edgar b.10/1874,Maria A. b.5/1876,Nancy J. b.4/24/1878,Emma May b.9/18/1879,Oscar M. b.9/30/1880 and a female b. 8/15/1882....ALL born in Champaign Co,Oh.
This is all the farther I have been able to go back.Hope this makes a connection to your Swimley's and hope you can make a connection to mine,as I have been trying to find out Joseph's parents.I THINK(but not sure yet) that Joseph's father might be a John Swimley.Am very interested in hearing from you. kathy

From the research I've been doing it appears that you are speaking of the same Joseph Franklin Swimley. He was married three times, which makes researching him particularly frustrating as his children tend to overlap so you're never quite sure. His first wife was Elizabeth Ann Busey who died in 1860, then he married Mary E Butler in 1961 and later Mary Elizabeth Cunningham. I've managed to find one snippet of information that names his father as Jacob Swimley, but this is not confirmed.

I am researching the same Joseph Franklin Swimleinofrmation y. He is my great grandfather. He was married to Mary E. Butler. Hackett (Harry) Swimley was my mothers father and her mother was Hattie Jane Swimley (Cantrell). I do not know how Mary Cunningham fits into all of this. I haven't found anything on her to connect her to our Joseph Franklin Swimley. I would be interested to see what information you have. I also believe that his father was Jacob Swimley but can't find anything to confirm it either.

Hi Just happened to catch your messages. I have been researching a small community in Frederick County, Virginia named Brucetown. I have a Samuel Jefferson Swimley, his parents were Martin Miller Swimley and Jane Hiett Swimley.

Martin was born in present day Berkeley County, West Virginia on August 07, 1812. He died on September 02, 1890 in Jefferson County, West Virginia. Martin Swimley’s parents were Jacob and Catherine Snider Swimley.

Martin Miller Swimley married Jane Hiett, daughter of John and Mary Locke Hiett, on May 18, 1836 in present day Jefferson County, West Virginia.

Maybe your Joseph Swimley is a brother to Martin Miller Swimley
