Rosemont cemetery? Earl Roy d. 1956

I have obituary notes for Earl Roy Sr., who died at the home of his only son, Earl Roy Jr. in Brownton, WV. There is a death record for him in Randolph Co., WV. Both indicate that he died in 1956 and is buried at Rosemont cemetery in Brownton, WV.

Where is Rosemont cemetery located? I did not find it on the cemetery list on the Barbour Co. site at usgenweb.

Any help appreciated with either this cemetery or this family.

Thanks,
Cathy

I am looking for information on Grady Mathis, the spelling could be wrong. She lived in Huntington, she was married to a man called Buddy Mathis. She had a daughter named Catherine and I know she had one son that served in the West Virginia legislature. She was the sister of my grandmother, Thelma Mae Kidd, Marcum. Grady was a Kidd before she was married. Thank you

Death of James A. Price in 1855. Parents were William & Sarah Price.

James A. Price died August 20, 1855 in the "Cheate" River in Preston County at age 55 (means he was born in 1800). His parents were William and Sarah Price. He was born in "Louden" County, Virginia. His wife was Jemima Price.

Reference for above: Line 262 on pages 6 and 7 of Preston County WV (then VA) Deaths 1853-1859 transcribed from microfilm by Roy L. Lockhart. This record was found in the Kingwood public library bearing No. 41597.

Related comment:

(A) The parents of James A. Price is William Price and Sarah Poland (wife 1). Sarah died and William later married Mary Butler Lewis in Monongalia County in 1807. James' wife was Jemima England. James' immediately older brother was William Price who married Anna (Wright/Right) Poling in 1819 in Randolph County, then in Virginia. Later this part of Randolph County became Barbour County WV. Brother William was born circa 1799, possibly in Loudoun County VA, but possibly from Maryland.

(B) The above suggests Richard Price (born ca. 1757 in Alexandria VA close to Loudoun) and Nancy Dallas could have been William Price's (who married Sarah Poland and Mary Butler Lewis) parents. This parents would be instead of Charles Price and Betsy Fowlkes or Ann Haskins in Prince Edward County. The input from anyone out there who can confidently list the parents of William Price (who married Sarah Poland and Mary Butler Lewis) would be appreciated.

(C) The above provides rationale to why WIlliam Price (who married Anna Wright Poling) first listed his "from" place as Virginia in the federal cenus, later listed Maryland, because his parents lived a while in Westerport MD. His father owned and operated a hotel in Westernport. Later he moved to Kingwood and owned the Hearndon Hotel. But if William (of Barbour) was older than James A., why wouldn't he too have been born in Loudoun County or another Virginia location instead of Maryland?

Details you have would be appreciated.

Wayne Price
<< Previous Next >>

Don Seabolt ~WV~ - Nov 8, 2007 View | Viewers
This information is from T. Lockard which was posted on West Virginia Web Site at myfamily.com WE need to help in keeping our state archives well and fit. WE need Fred Armstrong back at his job. WE need the cafe-tamerac REMOVED from the culture center. WE need a new governor if that is what it will take to stop him. Let it be known to all how you fel about messing up our history. How maney times have WE used to archives ? Please lets help now is the time not later. Call your senators and everyone now Thank you for your help in this. Don Seabolt.
Special Thanks to T Lockard in keeping us informed.

T. Lockard - Nov 7, 2007 View | Viewers
Categories: West Virginia ARCHIVES The following e-mail was sent to Virginia GILLESIE from Esther Warner. She also sent copies to Dawn Miller and Phil Kabler of the Charleston Gazette.

It should be circulated on ALL state web sites and printed in ALL genealogical and historical society newsletters.

Please forward it to all your genealogy buddies in your address book.

Without YOUR HELP, our WV ARCHIVES might just become a thing of the past...

++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

"Now is the time for all good men to come to the aid of their countrymen."

Dear Friends,
Please call the Governor of West Virginia today and state that you do not want to combine the search room with the Library Commission. Let him know that you do not want the Archives Search Room moved across the hall. Tell him that you don't need a cafe or a gift shop in the Cultural Center. We need the Museum put back into the basement, more money and equipment for the search room, and the Gag Orders placed on state employees removed.

It is unbelievable that State Employees are not allowed to voice a public opinion nor make any comment to the press. I thought that was what our Veterans had fought Wars over & to protect our right of Free Speech. In order to work for the State of West Virginia, Joe Manchin requires you to leave the Bill of Rights in storage, before you can work for the state.

Joe Manchin believes that we need a gift shop and a cafe in the Cultural Center. Then he will be able to have dancing in the Great Hall of the Cultural Center and then have an elegant banquet in the Cafe. This recalls the story of Queen Marie Antoinette of France. Her people were starving and crying out for bread, her answer was "Let them eat cake." Marie was missing the point. They had no bread, they had no cake.

We have something important in our Archives, we have the history of the State of West Virginia. We have the original rosters from the Civil War, we have microfilm records of births, deaths, marriages, etc. We have thousands of books on family, county, and state history. And that's just part of it.

In moving the State Archives Search Room from the location purposely designed for it by a trained architect and cramming it into the Library Commission Lending Library you are conveying the idea to me that what it contains isn't worth keeping nice. That it's o.k. to introduce food into an archival building. It isn't. The architect said so when he built it without the cafe. Food brings vermin, bugs, rats, nasty things. These eat books, they lick the ink right off the original records that are stored in the building.

Putting a lending library with a non-lending archival library? How smart is that? The books that are loaned are exposed to everything outside of the Cultural Center and returned onto the shelves: chemicals, contaminants, and etc. All mixed in with the books that we should be trying to maintain in the cleanest environment possible. Bad idea.

We lost a champion on November 1, 2007 in our Archives Director Fred Armstrong who was summarily fired as he served at the Will and Pleasure of the Governor. The Governor was no longer pleased and Fred Armstrong was no longer employed. Fred played the game that the Governor wanted. He didn't gossip about the combination of the libraries, he did his work and he did it very well. When I was called and told he had been fired, I said "Well, that makes sense. The one person I could always say was a good, hard worker, doing everything he could to make the Archives a better place. And he's fired."

Has the world gone mad?

Please call Governor Manchin today at 1-888-438-2731. Let him know we don't want the Archives Search Room moved. Today he wants to move the Archives across the hall. Tomorrow he may decide to move it to Morgantown. Or better still, sell all of it on E-bay.

Have your friends, your genealogy society, your history society, and everyone you know write a letter to Governor Manchin, 1900 Kanawha Boulevard, East, Charleston, WV 25305.

Another alternative in contacting the Governor is this web site:

http://www.wvgov.org/sec.aspx?id=36

Please take a stand on this and don't let up. We want an answer now.

The Mining Your History Foundation meets on Saturday, November 10, 2007 at the Green Room at the Cultural Center at 1 p.m. for their annual meeting. Please try to attend.
--
Joetta McCallister Kuhn
Certified Public Accountant
Vice President of Boone County Genealogical Society
Member of: Kanawha Valley Genealogical Society, Lincoln County Genealogical Society, Mining Your History Foundation, KYOWVA Genealogical Society

=======================================================
PELASE Try to attend the MYHF's annual meeting on Saturday! Show YOUR SUPPORT by attending. You DO NOT have to be a MEMBER of The Mining Your History Foundation.

(Site Administrators: Please let your members read this before it is deleted from your site. WE really do need to help West Virginia people to keep our history alive and safe. If you want to contact Tammy Lockard and get the updates she will have.
Hello,

I have reached a dead end on my great-grandmother! I hope someone here can help.
I have been looking for her death certificate but have been unlucky so far.
Her name was Eliza (Elizabeth) Samantha Barnett Boice. She married Samuel Moore Boice
in 1888. She died on Feb 14 1913, I thought in Braxton county which was where she
lived and her tombstone is located. So now I am trying the surrounding counties to find
where and how she died. Does anyone have access to death records of this county that could do a quick lookup for me?
Thanks so much,
Mark

Bleigh has a variety of spellings: Bleigh, Blye, Bly... At some point, Mary S. Bleigh, Sarepta's mom, may have married a man name Marshalos (Marshall) Perkins.

Even if Mary and Sarepta have moved out of James and Mary's household, I'd still be interested in James and Mary's census info.

I am trying to get copies of the census pages. I'd appreciate as much info as possible (sheet number, household number, district, etc...). Thank you very much for your help.

Isaac P. Teter, son of James Teter & Barbary Reger #3

Portrait and Biographical Album of Wapello County, Iowa... Chicago:
Chapman Brothers, 1887.

Rev. I. P. TETER,

Presiding Elder of the Methodist Episcopal Church in the Ottumwa District, is a native of Lewis County, Va., and was born May 11, 1829. He is a son of James and Barbara (Reger) Teter, both natives of the Old Dominion and both
now deceased. Of their five children the record is as follows: Alvah lives in Virginia; John is a large cattle-dealer in Kansas; Jacob is in Virginia; Isaac, our subject, was the fourth son; Granville is deceased.

The subject of this history grew to manhood in his native county, received careful training at the hands of most excellent parents, and obtained his early education in the common schools of that section. Early in life he determined to become a minister of the Gospel, and with that end in view closely pursued a course of Scriptural study. He was married in Buchanan, Va., Oct. 25, 1849, to Miss Rebecca Jackson, who was born July 25, 1831.
Her parents, Edward H. and Rebecca (Love) Jackson, were also natives of Virginia, and both descended from excellent families. Their household included four sons and seven daughters, as follows: Margaret married Job
Hinkle, of Virginia, who is now deceased; Sarah became the wife of William Sexton, and lives in Virginia; Mary was united in marriage with Val Strader, of Virginia; Elizabeth is deceased; John G. married Miss Salina Norman,
of Virginia; William L. is a bachelor; Minter J. married Miss Mary Cummins; Winford E. became the wife of Will S. Peterson, of Iowa; and they are now residents of Washington, D. C.; Prudence A. is deceased; the wife of
our subject was the next in order of birth; E. N. B. married a Miss Wilkinson, of Iowa, and they reside in California. Out subject and wife are the parents of two children: Joseph C., a resident of Burlington, and Frank
Elbert, of Ottumwa.

After becoming fitted for ministerial labors Mr. Teter resolved to come West for a permanent location, and accordingly, crossing the Mississippi in 1853, became identified with the Iowa Conference.

In the fall of 1861, having fully established himself in the confidence and esteem of the people of this section, and deeply interested in its welfare, he was elected to the Ninth
General Assembly of the State of Iowa, as Senator from the Sixteenth District. He fulfilled the duties of this position with great credit, and then, the Civil War being in progress, became Chaplain of the 7th Iowa Infantry and also of the United States Hospital at Keokuk. In this
capacity he sympathized with the unfortunate, cheered and encouraged the sick and wounded, and became the object of affectionate attachment by many who never lived to tell the tale.

At the close of the war Mr. Teter became Presiding Elder of the Burlington District, and since then has spent the greater part of his time in building up the cause of religion and morality. He is an earnest advocate of
prohibition, and by his influence and public speeches has contributed in no small degree to bringing the State to its present high position on the temperance question. He has taken an active interest in all matters pertaining to the general welfare of his adopted State, and has labored
with but little recompense for the good of his fellow-men. He possesses a keen insight into human nature, and has made the most of his opportunities of reading and study. He is a fluent speaker, possesses a valuable fund of
information, and without apparent effort secures the close attention of his audiences. His words are well selected and his line of argument at once takes hold of the reason and sympathy of his hearers. He has built up a good
record and made for himself hosts of friends in this county.

He came to Iowa about the year 1852 and was ordained as a
Methodist Episcopal clergyman, by Bishop Matthew Simpson, in 1855. His early appointments were at Troy, Montrose, Winchester, Ft. Madison, Drakeville, Albia, East Des Moines and Sigourney. While at the latter place, in
1861, he was elected to the State senate, in which body he became active and prominent, especially distinguished by his efforts to secure temperance legislation.

In 1863 he was commissioned as chaplain of the 7th Iowa
infantry and went to the front. Resigning in 1864, he was appointed post chaplain to the military hospitals at Keokuk, where he remained until the close of the war. He was a popular preacher, able and eloquent, exerting a
good degree of influence wherever he resided. He had long been one of the most widely known Methodist Episcopal clergymen in the State.
Isaac P. Teter, son of James Teter & Barbary Reger

The Makers of Iowa Methodism ... by Aaron W. Haines. Cincinnati :
Printed for the author by Jennings & Pye, c1900.

ISAAC P. TETER

was admitted to the Conference this year on trial. He was a recent arrival from Virginia, in which State he had been born in 1829. In his sixteenth year he was converted and united with the Church, and at the age of twenty-two he was given license to preach. He spent forty-seven years
in the active work, all in the Iowa Conference, and died on his last field of labor, at New Sharon, Iowa, march 6, 1900. The incidents of his long ministry would furnish an interesting chapter in itself. In the earlier days of his experience, after riding all day in an open conveyance he
arrived at his destination, which was the new appointment to which he had been assigned. He found entertainment at the home of one of the members of the Church; but was so discouraged with the outlook and so tired that he did
not make himself known. "We are looking every minute for our preacher," said the good lady of the house; "for one of our members is to be buried to-morrow, and we are anxious that our own pastor should conduct her funeral." He learned that there was a new sect operating in that
community, which claimed a monopoly on religion, and that no one outside of their communion had any right to expect to enter heaven. If the new preacher did not come, one of these would be called upon to preach. The young man,
after hearing a statement of the condition of things, acknowledged that he was the circuit-rider whom they were expecting, and that he was there to attend the funeral, which he did the next day. This gave him a splendid
opportunity to introduce himself, which he did in a satisfactory manner. He showed the utter folly of the teachings of those who said there was no hope for the
woman who lay in the coffin before them, simply because she had not submitted to a form which they said was necessary to salvation. From that day the boy preacher held the ground in spite of all opposition. This incident illustrates the manner in which he won success everywhere he went; he made the best use of his opportunities.

Once, having subscribed one hundred dollars to the college, he knew not where it was to come from.
A wealthy man lived in the town, and, though not a member of the Church, Teter went to him, and said, "Now, I want you to pay this for me, as you are able and I am not," and the obligation was paid.

In 1862, while he was pastor in Sigourney, he was elected a State senator, and acquired some distinction in the Legislature the following winter. Later he was ommissioned as chaplain of the Seventh Iowa Infantry, and accompanied his regiment into the South, where he remained until 1864,
when , returning North, he accepted a position which had been made vacant by the death of Isaac I. Stewart, as chaplain of the military hospitals in Keokuk, where he did faithful work with the sick and dying soldiers.

His ministerial labors included terms as presiding elder on the Burlington and Ottumwa Districts. In 1896 he was a member of the General Conference, which met in Cleveland, Ohio, and worthily represented his Conference.
He has well been characterized as "a man of superior natural and acquired ability, and was in the true sense an orator. His preaching was Scriptural, sound, and convincing, and delivered with force and unction. His voice was clear and musical, his enunciation distinct, and his manner pleasing; and he was sought for, for addresses upon public occasions, and he never failed to hold an audience. He had an exceedingly retentive memory, and his
social qualities were marked." He was well known outside of his own denomination, and took a lively interest in all living questions.

His death was very sudden, falling in an office where he had been in conversation with some of his friends; but in this he had his long-expressed desire fulfilled, that he might be spared protracted and severe suffering.
His remains were laid to rest in the Ottumwa Cemetery

I would like to obtain copies of them. James does not have a Will in Randolph Co. or Lewis. I was going to try Barbour next but hoping someone may know before I sent it out. I'm also looking for proof that James was son of Jacob Teter and Elizabeth Holder, who was son of George Teter and Mary Anna Margaret Henckle. Any help would be much appreciated.

I need a history lesson on Barbour County. Tonight I went to look up my gr gr gr grandfather and found him in the 1850 census record in District #5 of Barbour County, Virginia. I thought I would check to see who some of his neighbors were and ended up see almost my entire family tree in front of me (except for the line that came from Germany a few years later. Douglas/Skidmore/ Nutter/ Browning/ Hartman/ Yeager/ Wright - they were all there. I realize that WV broke from VA but can anyone tell me where this District # 5 was located. Also I know that Barbour County is in WV but a couple decades later some of these families are found in Upshur County and then in Braxton County. The final pairing in my line is Douglas(s) and Skidmore but that was 30+ years later. Now, my question is this: Did they move or did the county lines move?

Am looking for information on a Greathouse Family that lived in Barbour County, WV around 1870. I believe the mother's name was Sarah, do not know father's name. Had at least one child named Enos. Believe that father died before 1880 and Sarah Greathouse (do not know maiden name) married William Cox. If anyone has any information please email me @ licox316@earthlink.net

I'm seeking info on Draper England, his parents and their descendants. I know he was married to a Katy M. England, but at some point he had an affair with a Clara Moats (my family called her Clara England but I don't believe they were ever married). They had a daugher, Elsie Lillian, my maternal grandmother, who was raised by I believe Clara's sister, Ida (who married an Edwin England....not sure if he and Draper were related)
I bellieve I have found the names of Draper's parents: John and Georgia A.....but that's as far as I've gotten.
Any info would be very helpful.
Pam Swope

I saved this box from going into the trash after the house he lived in was foreclosed. I have no idea what happend to him or where to find him or if he is still alive. The box was not opened and was stored in a shed in the yard. I would like to return it to his family if at all possible. Please contact me at trubble2_2000@yahoo.com. You will need to be able to tell me who is parents were and his birth date. This way, I know that it is going to the right family.

Ancestry of Mary (Talbott) Fling

I am trying to confirm the ancestors of my wife’s gr-gr-grandmother Mary J. Talbott. Mary was born 12 Jun 1842, Philippi, Barbour County Virginia. She married Henry Henson Squires Fling on 6 November 1864, Barbour County, West Virginia.

I have found, in both Volume II of “West Virginia History” and “The History of Barbour County, West Virginia” that Robert and Mary (Woodford) Talbott had a daughter named Mary Talbott. According to the 1850 census Barbour County for Robert and Mary Talbott their daughter Mary (age 8) appears to be the right age for Mary Talbott, wife of Henry Fling.

Where I am confused is that sometime ago another Fling researcher, now deceased, wrote that while Mary Talbott’s gr-grandfather William Woodford I was a Revolutionary War soldier he was a private. If Mary J. (Talbott) Fling was the daughter of Robert and Mary (Woodford) Talbott and Volume II of “West Virginia History” and “The History of Barbour County, West Virginia” are correct then it would appear that Mary Talbott’s gr-grandfather, William Woodford I, was a General and not a private?

I would appreciate any assistance in helping me better understand the ancestry of our Mary (Talbott) Woodford.

Henry England abt 1748 -15 Sep 1839 had three children listed in his will survey. Susanna Salanker married Charles Stalnaker, Elizabeth who married James Lightfoot Cheuvrount and John England. I am looking for all information in relation to Henry's children. All children appear to have been born in Randolph County. Elizabeth may have moved to Jackson County, Susanna moved to Lewis County & John's last location was in 1837 in Harrison County. This is about as much info as I have.
Henry may have been married to an Elizabeth (parents of John & Susanna) and may have been been married to a Mary Paxson widow of Jacob Paxson. Harrison County, Book 1, page 55 list a Henry England married to widow Mary Paxson.
I have not been able to discover the were abouts or families of Henry's children. Any help would be greatly appreciated as this has been my brickwall for several years.
Thanks
K. England

Thought I'd post this info on the Righman message board, it doesn't exist. So.........here goes. On a certain web site, it auctions things, if I would mention the name of the web site this message might be deleted, 8 photographs of Righman's Gristmill are listed ITEM #6111388855.

I don't have a nickel in the item, just an interest in Gristmills located in Hancock Co. Tomlinson Run State Park. Here's hoping someone from the Righman family of Nestorville gets an opportunity to gather a little history. If not, someone documenting Barbour Co. step up to the plate.

Craig,

Hello Everyone,
I am looking for information on Henry England (Inglan). He was supposed to have been from PENN., bought land in the town of Beverly 1795-1798 & sold land in Beverly 1800. Henry then bought land in the area of Beaver Creek, now Barbour, WV. There is a survey of Henry's (deceased) land in 1831 for the heirs of Susanna Stalnaker, Elizabeth Sheveroun (Cheuvront) and John England.
I am looking for leads on the heirs of Henry. I can't find any information on these heirs.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks for your help in advance.
Kirby

Can anyone please help? I am looking for the burial location for my great grandfather, Rev. Hamilton Douglas BARNHOUSE. He lived in Junior WV when my family visited in 1954 and then he died in October 1957. He was married to Harriet E. (LEMASTERS) BARNHOUSE so he might be burried with her. He spent his life as a minister with the Evangelical United Brethern Church. Since he lived most of his life in Barbour County, I am assuming that is where he died and is burried.
