I had contacted the E WA archives and they had indicated that in their holdings they did not have the auditor's records and then referred me to the county. The county requires you to go to their office or send a researcher in order to look at the books which they still have in their possession. I have also looked at the blm records and the census records, too.
Thank you for the reference to the newspapers... I did not have that item. It refers to the death of Charlotte Blackburn and includes all of her children.

Thank you for all of your help.

The 1930 Census identifed Wm. B. Blackburn, age 58, born in Tennessee, and his family lived in Tekoa City, owning the property. He was a laborer for a railroad shop, so there would not be farm records through the Homestead Act.

The 1920 Census identified Wm Blackburn, age 49, born in TN and family lived in Guy Precinct, Whitman County, and was renting the property.

The 1910 Census identified Wm Blackburn, age 43, born in TN, married 18 years and family on Glenn Wood Road, farmer/grain farm, owning the property. This Glenn Wood Road does not appear on current maps.

The 1900 Census showed Wm, born Dec 1868 in TN, married 8 years to Julia and two children, living in Elberton, Whitman Co. He was a farmer, owning his land.

The Bureau of Land Management has land patent records:
http://www.glorecords.blm.gov/search/default.aspx issued under the Homestead Act and other Congressional Land Acts. It shows a George W. Blackburn being issued land in 1907 in Whitman County, but no one identifiable to William. There were none identifiable to Noble MacDonald.

The Auditor's office may or may not have deed records back to that time period, if not, they "might" have forwarded such records to the Washington Archives. I would suggest you contact that office to determine IF they even have such records.

The Assessor's office would have land records in the "Big" books, red colored books about 24x36. A "volunteer" would have to look page by page to find property transfers and information. I would contact this agency to see if they still have that information. Government records such as these are often NOT archived, or had been lost to other reasons (fire, damage, etc).

I would HIGHLY doubt there would be ANY records of improvements or pictures.

An address to correspond to a present day map? The owned farm could have been so divided that it would be impossible to determine where within a population area that a residence on a farm might have been located. There are such maps as plat maps, but, there may or may not have been one for that farm in that location.
http://www.historicmapworks.com/Atlas/US/9654/Whitman+County...

http://www.sos.wa.gov/archives/archives_eastern.aspx WA Archives/Eastern.
The Whitman County Government/Auditor has Plat records from 1967-1986 filed at the WA State Archives, Eastern Branch.
--Auditor, Registered Lands, 1893-1930, a two cubic foot volume.
--Auditor, Voter Registrations, 1904-1932, 18 Cubic foot. (1904, 1916-1932)

There are other potential avenues to identify an address. The City Directories (Polks) would show an address. However, for this time period and location, they may not have been published for these areas. If they had, they may only show names and not addresses. For this time period, the spouse was often not published.

Newspapers (database only through 1922):
The Pullman Hearld, Oct 29, 1920:
County Records, October 15, 1920
Deeds
Bessie Berson, Lillie Hansen, Lulu Queen, Ida Black, Roscoe C. Blackburn, Schuyler Blackburn, William B. Blackburn and Walter Blackburn, to W.A. Kirkland, lots 3, 4, 5, 6, Block 1, Rohleder's Addition, Sunset, $150.00.

William died in 1934 (Not 1936):
http://www.findagrave.com/cgi-bin/fg.cgi?page=gr&GSln=bl...;
Julia:
http://www.findagrave.com/cgi-bin/fg.cgi?page=gr&GRid=13...

I HIGHLY doubt you will get volunteer assistance in this, it is a lot of work just to look for improvements or where they lived...which is probably overgrown with other parcels or unprovable to find.

Whitman County Auditor and Lookup request

I am looking for a researcher in the Pullman/Colfax, WA area who can go to the Whitman County Auditor's Office to look at deeds and land records to find a legal description and thereby a parcel number in order to find an address for William Brownlow Blackburn. He lived in and around Albion (1920), Bethel (1910) Elberton (1900) and Tekoa (1930) from the late 1880s until his death in 1936 in Tekoa. I am also looking to see if there is a picture of the improvements made by him on the land and/or a description. It would also help for an address in order to correspond to a present day map. Also, His mother, Charlotte (died 1918), lived in Sunset from about 1905 until her death. And, his in-laws, Noble (died 1917) and Narcissa Carline Macdonald (died 1925), lived in Elberton from the 1880s until their deaths. Any help that you can give me would be wonderful!

Review of research indicates that Pauline was "possibly" living with her daughter, Amanda, or at least in the local area/care facility. Pauline and her husband, Edward, were living in Lane County, OR, in 1930. He died in 1932. So, she came to live or visit her daughter Amanda at some point between 1932 and 1936. There may or may not be an obituary for her, depending on the usual factors: Number of years in the area, number of friends or family that knew her, her wishes, her daughter's wishes, cost factor, etc.

The WA Digital Archives shows Pauline A. Korbine of Tacoma (Pierce Co) marriage to Edward W. Eyanson on 14 Nov 1896 in King County.
http://media.digitalarchives.wa.gov/WA.Media/jpeg/326A8A48BF...

The 1910 Census of Seattle, King Co
Edwin, 46, born in Indiana
Pauline A, born in Germany, mother of 2/1 living
Anna R, 11, born in WA (the 1900 Census shows her as Ruth, born June 1898 in WA, so she was Anna Ruth. Pauline shown as born Sept 1873. Pauline again shown mother of 2/1 living).

The WA Digital Archives shows Ruth A Eyanson of Pierce Co, marriage to Earl F. Anderson of Spokane Co, marriage on 26 Jan 1916 in Pierce Co.
http://media.digitalarchives.wa.gov/WA.Media/jpeg/97D350D60D...
(Top Certificate).

In the 1930 Census, Pauline and Edward were living in Siuslaw, Lane County, Oregon.
The 1930 Census of Malden, Whitman Co, WA
Earl Anderson, age 44, born ni Minnesota, engineer/steam railroad
Ruth, age 31, born in WA to father born in Indiana, mother in Germany
Marjorie, 13, dau, born in WA.
--in 1940, Earl and Anna R, living in Malden by themselves.

Both Edward and Pauline are buried in the Rest-Haven Memorial Park, Eugene. He has an obit with memorial:
http://www.findagrave.com/cgi-bin/fg.cgi?page=gr&GSln=ey...;
Pauline does not. Charles, the son, 1899-1900 is shown, but, Anna Ruth is not.

Ron Bestrom
Tacoma, WA
Buick,
I see this is your first posting on the Rootsweb message system. When you post, it is helpful to volunteers to post some criteria information that you may know. In this case, the full data of birth and date of death of "Bill Maley" would help distinquish him from others with the same name. Also, identify what information you already know, such as where he lived during Census, parents, siblings. In this way, you won't get a lot of information you already know, or dumb questions to ask you to provide all the information that you already know.

I found your posted family tree that has this person. Post the link to those you are researching.
http://trees.ancestry.com/tree/49421680/person/12983848139?s...=
(This identifies him as Raymond, where research volunteers might only look for "Bill," or "William,"

Since I had already found the below, I'm leaving it here for other volunteers:

The Washington Death Index:
Raymond W. Maley, died 27 December 1975 in Spokane, age 33, residence was in Whitman County. (A place of death does not mean the person had lived there).

The Social Security Death Index:
Ramond Male, born 7 Jan 1942, died Dec 1975. SSN 537-40-9864, issued in 1959. The SSDI usually shows: "Last Residence," be careful with that, as it often does not mean the person lived or died in that location.

Now, with the full date of death and birth information, you can request a search for a copy of his obituary:
The Washington State Library has a free research service, the ask-a-librarian program, where they will look for information in the archives, in this case the newspaper microfilm for an event. They will look up to an hour and send you the results. For an obituary: http://www.sos.wa.gov/library/Obituaries.aspx

I'd suggest contact first of his immediate family (if you haven't already). I'd also obtain the names of his friends (high school grad abt 1960) and neighbors and contact them.

I'm looking for anyone willing to photograph gravestones in the Garfield Cemetery in Whitman County. Specifically, I am wanting a photo of the gravestones of my first cousin (3-times removed) William W. Duling (1855 - 1927) and his wife and siblings. I understand that the markers are quite large and impressive and are all together in a family plot.
If there is anyone out there willing, I will give you my e-mail address to send to.

Richard, I read your post regarding John and Sarah Hobach. They are my great, great grandparents. I visited Aunt Bertie's house in Farmington, WA for many years. I also have some pictures I can share. I have completed research as far back as John born in 1783 who married to Dorcus Killin. Beyond John, I am stuck. I can not figure out if John Valentine Hoback born about 1745, married to Catherine Van Benschoten is his father, or Valentine Hoback born in 1728 married to Elizabetha are the parents of John born in 1783. I have a lot of information on the various Hoback lines but I need help piecing together the Father and Brothers who immigrated to America. Do you have information beyond John (married to Dorcus) that you could share with me? Also, what helped you to determine who the parents of John (married to Dorcus) are?

It was quite a moving experience for me to be at the place where my dad was born and grew up. He was born in 1909. My grandma married my grandpa in the area in 1903. Her surname was Curnow and his was Foy. My daughter lives in the Pasco and I am planning to visit her soon. I may try to visit Elberton again. Thank you for your message.

Hello Jacqueline,

My great uncle, William Charles Kasdorf was born in Whitman County, near Colfax on August 29,1891 and died in France during WWI. According to a newspaper article I found, he was listed as missing for several months and it required a month to locate his burial place in France. His body was returned to Colfax and his funeral was June 18, 1921, which would make his death sometime in the latter part of 1920. The date on his tombstone is September 8, 1918, which I believe is the date he entered the service. His unit was the 109 Infantry, 34 Division, which I looked up and read that they didn't leave for France until
September 18, 1918.

I would love to have any information the book shows, and I am crossing my fingers that there is a picture of William, or any other Kasdorf that may be in you book.

Thanks so much for sharing this wonderful information.

Charlene Kasdorf
CharleneK@aol.com

Hello,
I actually have lived in Elberton and have family from the area. There are only a few families still living there today, and the town's history is fading, but in middle school I did a project and made a scrapbook of any old photos I could find, including some newer ones that I took. Unfortunately, I'm in college and far from home, and don't have access to the book or the photos. When I do get a chance to go home, I will try to upload any pictures I have. I am curious if you at least know whether or not you have any family currently in the area? Since the area is so small, there is a good chance that I would know them.

Hi, thanks for the suggestions. I'm familiar with the information you provided.

I did find 2 records supporting that Gus Holmberg worked as a teacher in Tekoa from Aug 1915 until Summer 1917.

I continue to be interested in any other local records which may give further information, specific to the time he was in Tekoa. So far what I have found are his Mason lodge membership record & teachers records at Washington State Archives.

Many of the larger public libraries provide access to Ancestry at no charge.

If you want to pursue his time in Whitman County, Washington, contact the Whitman County Genealogical Society, rootsweb.ancestry.com/~wawcgs/...

In 1930 Gustaf was living in Superior, Douglas, Wisconsin.
Gustaf H. Holmberg, b. MI, 39, accountant.
Ida C., wife, b. Sweden, 33, immigrated 1901.
Mary Louise, b. MN, 3.

Gustaf and his wife also had another child.
