Re: Howell Family in WA/ Idaho
Hi Amylou, I'm not familiar with the family but I did some research. I first found Henry on the 1860 Fifteen Mile, Wasco Co., OR Census. He was b. TN, abt. 1835 and a laborer.
You might want to look at the following web sites for additional about him. Wasco County ORGenWeb, www.historysavers.com/; Wasco County History Site, www.wasco-history.r9esd.k12.or.us/; Wasco Co. Genealogy, www.historysavers.com/orwasco/. Might be a good county to look for marriage and birth certs or records of the kids.
Then he appears on the 1870 Franklin Butte Precinct, Linn Co., OR Census. Henry, b. abt. 1834, TN hired man & living with the Phillips family. This may or may not be your Henry since his family isn't listed with him. He may have hired himself out for a period of time to make some money.
You could contact the Linn Gen. Soc., www.lgsoregon.org/ to see if they have any info on Henry and take a look at Linn County, Oregon Genealogy web site, www.co.linn.or.us/museum/genealogy/index.htm. Same as above for marriage & birth records of children.
Henry and family appear on the 1880 Census in Farmington, Whitman Co., WA as you know.
They are still in Whitman Co. in 1883 per the Wash. Territorial Census. Henry, 50, farmer; Margaret, 63; Mary, 16, OR and William, 13, OR. The rest of the children aren't listed but I think this was a Census mistake because they appear in 1885.
Sarah their oldest doesn't appear on the 1883 or 1885 Census and she either married after the 1880 or before the 1883 Census or died.
I'd contact Whitman Co. Gen. Soc., www.rootsweb.com/~wawcgs/res.htm or look at the www.rootsweb.com/~wawcgs web site to find a marriage or death record.
Whitman Co. Cemeteries are listed at www.interment.net/us/wa/whitman.htm or www.mrail.net/wash/whitman.htm web sites.
The 1885 Whitman Co. Wash. Terr. Census lists Henry and family. H. Howell, 53, b. TN, farmer; M J, 45, b. MO; M, b. OR, 17; Wm, 15, OR; Annie, 11, b. OR; Cha [Charles] b. OR, 9; Eva, b. OR, 7 and C [Clayburn] b. Wash. Terr. 4.
Mary doesn't appear on the 1885 Census. I'd guess she either died or married.
The 1887 Whitman Co. Wash. Terr. Census lists the same people except for Annie.
The 1889 Whitman Co. Census lists the same people except for William. Again I'd check with the Whitman Co. resources.
Henry and Margaret don't appear again in the censuses.
I found a Charles Howell and family in the 1910 Pine Creek, Latah Co., ID Census. Charles b. OR, 34, marr 7 yrs, general farmer, father born TN & mother b. MO; wife Mary, b. OH, 27 had given birth to 4 children & 3 alive in 1910;
Alma, b. ID, 6; Samuel, b. ID, 3 and Violet b. 1, ID.
In 1920 this family was still living in Pine Creek. Charles, b. OR, 43, farmer, father b. TN & mother b. MO; Mary, b. OH, 36; rest of family b. in ID; Alma M. 16; Samuel W., 12; Violet M., 11; Gordon W., 9; Hugh J., 7; Arthur G., 5; Edith E., 5/12ths and Ira Howell, brother, single, b. ID, 25, farm laborer.
It is possible the Margaret gave birth to her last child in 1895.
I'd do a web search for Latah County Idaho Genealogy Society and see if you can find one & other sources of info. Successful Hunting
