According to: Hunt, Herbert and Floyd C. Kaylor. Washington: West of the Cascades. Vol.
III. Chicago: S.J. Clarke Publishing Co., 1917. p.604-605.
"August Klocke, Sr., a native of Germany, came to the
Pacific coast in 1864 and moved from Portland to Lynden in 1872, making the trip by boat to Bellingham and then by trail to his destination, for no roads at the time had been laid out. He was the first white man to settle north of Lynden, taking up a homestead a mile beyond the present site of the town."
According to the 1880 Census he was born in Prussia.
He was born ca 1832 and was 81 years old when he died in 1913.
In the family were seven children, of whom six are yet living [as of 1917, the date of the publication]: George, a resident of Bellingham; Mrs. Annie Richbau; Henry and August, both of Lynden; Frederica; and Adolph, also of Lynden.
August Klocke, Jr, born ca 1879 in Washington Territory married Henrietta Ann Lindseth in 1903. She was born in Norway.
I believe Fredericka married Charles E. Schelin. The above article lists Anna with a married name of Richbau. The 1880 Census lists an Emma, born ca 1875.but does not list an Anna. The last name may also be spelled Richbaw or Richland, depending on the Census year. 1930 Census lists an Anna Richland who has 14 year old Adeline Klocke living in her household. In the same Census, {Frede}ricka Schelin has 11 year old August Klocke living in her household. I have not been able to identify the parents of these two young children. There is a third child living with another family in Lynden. He is 15 year old August Klocke. They are apparently not the children of August Klocke, Jr. and Henrietta Lindseth who had 2 daughters, Sylvia and Fredericka.
Anyone have these names in your Klocke family or know any thing further about them?
